Flowcrete South Africa opens new Durban warehouse

Aggreko supplies 28 MW of stable power to Madagascar Aggreko has announced that it has started to supply stable power, using 28 MW of its HFO-generated energy. The occasion was marked by the attendance of President of Madagascar, Hery Rajaonarimampianina, Prime Minister, Olivier Solonandrasana and Minister of Water, Energy and Hydrocarbons, Lantoniaina Rasoloelison.

Aggreko has provided power to Madagascar for a number of years.

This new installation – NOOR 2 – will run alongside Jovena’s NOOR 1 turbines, as part of an extension to a 50 MW agreement with the country’s national utility company, Jirama.

Aggreko has developed a best in class HFO energy generation solution, comprising containerized mobile, modular energy generators that can be configured and deployed in weeks.

The company’s HFO offering has lowered the total cost of energy for Jovena and brings cost effective, reliable and uninterrupted electricity to the 1.4 million residents of the island’s capital, Antananarivo.

Flowcrete South Africa has moved to a new, larger warehouse and office facility in Durban in order to provide a more customer focused service.

The new warehouse has been designed to put the customer first.

Based in Westmead, Durban, the new facility is significantly larger than the previous warehouse. The site also includes a new office and a product showroom.

The resin flooring manufacturer’s warehouse operations were previously based at its factory in Jacobs, Durban, but since 3rd January 2018 this work has taken place at its new premises in Westmead, Durban. The address of the new warehouse is: Unit 10 Gillitts Industrial Park, 32-35 Gillitts Road, Westmead, Durban, The move was central to Flowcrete Africa’s development and growth strategy, which includes adding Euclid Chemical and RPM Belgium Vandex construction chemical solutions to its product offering.

Melcon secures third most expensive road deal in Ethiopia Melcon Construction Plc, a local construction firm in Ethiopia has been awarded a project contract to construct the nation’s third most expensive road. The road project is estimated to cost US $19.7m extending from Haile Garment to Jemo square.

The 60m wide and 4.52Km long road, is part of the Haile Garment outer ring road expansion project which connects feeder roads with Huajan Industry Zone, one of the privately owned parks in the country.

The project is expected to be finalized within two years of commencement. Additionally, the road will have pedestrian walkways, and accommodate between 100mm and 120mm wider pipelines for electric, telecom and waste drainage.

Costing the city’s administration US $4.4m a kilometer, it is the most expensive road project next to the Quality ring road interchange and Quality ring road to Qilinto projects costing US $8.2m, and US $8.1m cost a kilometer, respectively.

Due to concerns of damage to the access road during the 6 month construction and stocking period, it was decided to split this portion of the works into two phases.

CESA announces a change in leadership Consulting Engineers South Africa (CESA) has announced a change of leadership with Neresh Pather, a Director at Mott MacDonald, being appointed President of the association, while Sugen Pillay, Managing Director of Zitholele Consulting, being named Deputy President.

Pather brings more than 25 years of engineering consulting industry experience to the role. He has been with Mott MacDonald for the past two decades, following more than 12 years at PD Naidoo & Associates Consulting Engineers, which was acquired by Mott MacDonald in 1997; he was then the firm’s CEO. His current role at the global engineering consultancy firm, which has 17 offices across Africa, is largely focused on leading the firm’s work in the transportation sector across Africa.

“I am truly humbled by the privilege bestowed upon me to lead our industry. I hope that CESA will be able to renew and reinvent itself to increase our relevance to both our clients and young professionals, who will ultimately take over the leadership of the industry. We will seek to broaden our scope as the industry transforms over the coming years to make sure that CESA becomes more inclusive and relevant and is able to put the industry at the forefront of its mind through effective ethical leadership,” said the new President.

CORBON begins skills acquisition training The Council of Registered Builders of Nigeria (CORBON) in conjunction with N-Power have started the skills acquisition training for 100 Master Trainers in the ongoing ‘Train the Trainer Skills Acquisition Programme for Construction Artisans in Nigeria.’

At the end of the training, the master trainers will be sent to the 36 states to train other trainers who will in turn transfer skills to construction artisans.

According to the Vice Chairman of CORBON, Dr. Samson Opaluwah, the training included going to the states and zones across the federation to train other trainers who would in turn train construction industry artisans for the country.

“The training progamme is a major ‘problem solver’ because the artisanship level of the construction industry in this country is being taken over by foreigners while Nigerian youths remain unemployed,” he noted. “The CORBON/N-Power initiative will equip Nigerian youths with the skills to win jobs and execute them competently and professionally in a competitive economy,” he affirmed.

SAWEA expects conclusion of outstanding PPAs

by March The South African Wind Energy Association (SAWEA), in partnership with the broader renewable power sector, expects the conclusion of the 26 outstanding power purchase agreements (PPAs) in the first quarter of 2018.

What is the cost of your typical system?

For a battery project, it really depends on the maximum load of the equipment that is connected to the battery’s inverters. But in a solar-only context, in U.S. Dollar terms, if you’re paying more than 12 cents per kilowatt-hour for electricity generated from a solar project that is larger than 500 kW, you’re getting a bad deal. For a solar project that is less than 500 kW, due to economies of scale, 16 cents per kilowatt-hour seems high for a project installed using 2018 equipment prices.

How do you determine good quality?

Among other factors, safety. The technology we use through our SolarEdge inverters eliminates the risk of electrocution and unsafe voltage levels. This protects installers, maintenance personnel and emergency responders.

When the inverter is turned off or in safety mode, the DC voltage in the solar string cables are reduced to a voltage level that is safe and extra-low, just 1 volt. Also, our O&M software enables monitoring of each individual solar module, which improves accuracy of monitoring, and remote troubleshooting.

For example, in May of last year, we commissioned a new project, but it was not performing as we had expected. Using the

O&M software, we identified several modules in the Northeast corner of the project which were shaded in the afternoon hours from a tree. After trimming the tree, the project is now performing as originally expected. And, as we’re a sustainable company, we also planted new vegetation to offset the losses from trimming the branches.

When you’re working with customers, how important is the environmental impact of the project?

Some, but not all, of our customers have a green mandate. For those that do, Centennial’s projects allow customers to achieve their sustainability targets without committing new CapEx to the project.

Once the customer agreement is signed, and the project is installed, we need frequent access to the customer’s facility for our inhouse technical team to come to site to keep the solar modules clean and the equipment up to date. We focus on asset management because we’re only getting paid if our projects are generating electricity as expected.

Also, the environmental footprint of businesses on the African continent matters for many reasons, including the fact that unsustainable operations can be a disqualifier for growth opportunities. Fortune 1000 companies are looking internally, and throughout their supply chain, for ways to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions. As businesses in Africa are

he rapid rise of urbanization in most parts of Africa has presented the continent with a number of challenges and stripped its cities of the ability to provide for basic needs like shelter, infrastructure, education and health care. Urbanization and demand for houses are positively correlated and thus as the urban society of a city expands so does the needs for more housing. In the case of most developing countries, these needs have largely gone unmet.

Consequently, housing shortage in developing countries has escalated to unprecedented rates making the percentage of slum dwellers that reside illegally in a place without authorization and property rights extremely high. The housing sector, while addressing the needs for affordable housing of low-income groups, can enormously contribute to the development of African economies. However, in most developing countries, few segments of the economy, as contributors to growth, have been as understudied as housing. As a result, a sector largely missing in the economic plans

South Africa, despite its well-developed real estate industry and vocational training system, is estimated to be short by 50,000 skilled construction workers and these kind of figures are reflective of much of Africa.

“We owe a lot to the BG28 which has enabled Franki to implement many cost-efficient solutions to a wide range of clients since it first arrived in this country from Germany in 2012,” Pearce says.

Another time-saving solution used by Franki was the construction of a movable ramp to create the required 1 in 6 rake, meaning that it is not necessary to modify the platform earthworks for each pile. “With all six pier piles raking in different directions this represents a major cost and time saving solution,” Pearce says.

Dealing with the Unexpected The necessary raised platform and variable rock levels, resulted in suitable founding rock only being encountered at depths of over 25m for some piles - 10m deeper than the average expected – but piling production has still met expectations. “The BG28 has comfortably dealt with deep boulder layers and, as expected, the cluster drill has formed sockets in vastly reduced time,” Pearce says.

It was not all plain sailing, however, and one operational disadvantage has been that the hard boulders and rock have caused extreme wear on cutting teeth and bits, which have required regular maintenance and replacement.

Another disadvantage has been that when forming the socket with the cluster drill, the rock in which the socket is created is reduced to small chips and dust. This means that the rock quality is more difficult to assess post-drilling and a thorough geotechnical investigation is essential prior to construction. “As with most geotechnical works, the cost of a thorough geotechnical investigation is easily recovered during construction through design and construction cost savings, for the ultimate client” Pearce says.

Conclusion With several lengthy work stoppages due to flooding of the access causeway, the piling is expected to be completed in mid-July 2017 after which the main contractor will complete the abutments and bridge piers and place the precast beams supporting the new deck providing a safe, dual lane link between the north and south banks of the Tugela River and helping to uplift Tugela Ferry and the entire surrounding area.

Salient Features With the brief from the client, Scope Design Systems came up with a concept of an ultra-modern 17-story building within the constrained site comprising three basements levels, 2 levels for retail and 12 floor levels of office space. The development comprises of 9,800 square meters of high quality office space, 150 car park bays with three high speed lifts to serve the various levels. The entrance to the building is dominated by a large canopy from which you encounter a double height lobby space that has the reception area. The ground floor and mezzanine floor has space commercial activities such as retail shops, banking halls among others, 1st floor up to the 11 th floor office space would be sold or let out to corporate bodies while KISM will be occupying the 12th floor.

“This is an ultra-modern building offering a full package of high quality office space and amenities.” He states, adding that construction commenced in March 2017 with completion date slated for March 2019.

Challenges Encountered Although implementation of the project is on schedule and on budget, it has not been without its fair share of challenges. The biggest challenge, according to Arch.

“Quantity Surveyors deal with a very sensitive aspect of the project which is money; whatever else that is done on the project revolves around money. It is therefore very important for the developer to get a quantity surveyor with a reputation for maintaining high integrity standards,” he affirms.

“In other words, a good quantity surveyor helps the developer to not only determine the cost of a project, but also control that cost because determining the cost without control mechanisms is a recipe for failure; it is just like planning then failing to manage that plan.

Most importantly, a good quantity surveyor also helps the developer to ensure he avoids instances that are likely to result in disputes by identifying potential claim sources so that they are dealt with before they escalate. For instance, if a contractor may require a certain detail from an architect for a particular activity on the programme. If that detail is issued in good time for the activity to be executed, it means that the activity is likely to delay. If this occurs, the contractor will most likely ask for an extension of time and associated additional cost, depending on how the activity impacts on the overall project programme,” he adds. www.constructionreviewonline.com

As Mr. Abwunza further explains, Anka has not only excelled due to the fact that they service a contract with due diligence while keeping the client appraised of the financial implications of changes made to the initial design; they also have value additions which include: advising the architects properly on the time and cost implications of the various design alternative solutions. In this regard, they ensure that cost guides the design not the other way round; and they also get actively involved in cost engineering of projects during the design and implementation stages.

“As part of our growth over the 10 years, we have seen a significant increase in the number of employees to attend to the increasing demand for our services. In addition, we regularly recruit intern and graduate quantity surveyors and take them through our rigorous training programme, which is an important aspect of our professional development,” says Qs. Abwunza.

The company has further invested in technology in terms of professional software that help in preparing documents and managing contracts. This strategy, according to Qs. Abwunza, has significantly

enhanced our operational efficiency.

Despite these successes, Mr. Abwunza observes that the company has faced its fair share of challenges. “The main challenge is the fluctuation in construction output, especially in Kenya. This fluctuation is mainly attributed to the election cycle and the strong link between the country’s construction performance and external shocks caused by political activities. The construction industry is the first casualty of these shocks.

Unfortunately, it is also the last sector to recover from the same shocks.

As a result, most developers develop a wait and see attitude several months to the election. After the election, they also take time to monitor the performance of the various economic indicators before they make their final decision to proceed with the process of implementing their projects. However, we look forward to future where such external shocks shall have minimal or no impact on the economic stability,” notes Qs. Abwunza.

“Another challenge we face in the construction industry is the perennial delay in receiving payments for work done. Any vendor who has done some work for or made supplies to any government department is undoubtedly aware of this problem. Delays experienced by vendors in receiving payment from the government adversely affect us in the construction industry either directly or indirectly. Our operations are directly affected by delayed remittances owed to us by government agencies. However, we are also affected indirectly by delayed payments by some of our clients when their payments are delayed by the same government. The multiplier effect of this delay on the entire supply chain negatively affects the effective delivery of many projects,” he adds.

Apart from quantity surveying, Anka Consultants Limited is also involved in Project Management and Contract Administration in the construction industry. Regarding project management, they are involved in the strategic management of the design and construction stages of construction projects while in the contract administration part of the business they are involved in arbitration and dispute management, forensic audit, commercial management and general contract administration.
