CSI Practice Groups

Product Representation Practice Group

The Practice Groups hold monthly virtual meetings conducted by webinar to explore emerging and ongoing topics that affect how we practice our crafts. Each meeting lasts approximately one hour and discussion among participants is encouraged. The practice groups are free and CSI membership is not required. CSI’s Product Representation Practice Group focuses on issues facing anyone affected by product representation. Meetings are held monthly and topics include: how technology is changing the way products are found and incorporated into a project; the disconnect between manufacturers and construction process and requirements; bid-shopping by General Contractors; and best practices for communicating about products, and trends in construction that affect materials.

BIM Practice Group

Sustainability Practice Group Focuses on communicating sustainability goals and best practices through construction documentation. Topics have included: accurately and effectively communicating the sustainable attributes of products; writing specs that accomplish LEED-related goals; and the how and why of Environmental Product Declarations.

Contract Administration Practice Group Focuses on issues facing anyone involved in contract administration. With the emergence of BIM and Sustainability and the corresponding changes required in contracts and delivery methods to support these new requirements, how we administer and manage projects needs to adapt. This group will explore and discuss these and other issues leading to best practices of project administration.

Emerging Professionals Practice Group CSI defines emerging professionals as individuals who have entered the design and construction industry in the past five years, and who are interested in career advancement though networking, continuing education, and leadership. Meetings of this group focus on the skills and information emerging professionals need to get ahead in the construction community.

Specifying Practice Group CSI’s Specifying Practice Group focuses on issues facing anyone reading or writing construction specifications. With meeting held monthly, topics include: how technology influences content, production and delivery; disasters and responses to practical experience; tools, techniques, and tips worth sharing; what drives product selection, exactly; exponential marketplace advancements; and earning to forget what no longer applies etc.

Focuses on issues related to managing information in BIM. Meetings generally include demonstrations of the innovative ways firms are meeting the challenges BIM has created as it continues to grow in acceptance and use. The role of CSI and its standards and formats in integrating construction documentation into the BIM world and the changing ways we practice are explored and discussed.
