e’re all getting ready for another summer season on the water, and we’re hoping this issue of Lakeside Living will help you along your way. While many readers are seasoned boaters, we know there are newcomers among us and so we’re visiting our local experts to gather their best advice on launching that boat for another season. Boats are a sizable investment and worth protecting, plus, no one wants to risk any safety issues while out having a good time. We’ll introduce you to artist Elizabeth Smith and her life-long love of art and creating. Her pieces may be just what you’re looking for to enhance your interior and add a new breath of spring to your home. I bring you some of my favorite pasta dishes, my very favorite a low cal, low fat Alfredo. No one will know if you don’t tell. I did focus on the lower end fat and cholesterol recipes I’ve tried, just because…a good alternative is always a better path that adds in unnecessary elements we don’t need. We’ll tell you about your neighbors in Talladega who are preparing for one of their biggest celebrations of the year, the April in Talladega Pilgrimage with home tours, fun gatherings, a block party and everything else that’s on tap for the weekend of April 12 and 13. This is a 30-plus year tradition and one you’ll want to join in on. We’ll take you inside Takis, an eating establishment that has an across the board menu that you can be sure even the most persnickety person you might dine with will find pleasing.

ith the stroke of one brush, artist Elizabeth Smith can make everyday things come to life. What is even more fascinating is that she is not limited to just oil on canvas, but also has a talent for making the ordinary extraordinary in whichever way she chooses. Whether it is a small unassuming bird perched on a branch, its wooden wings carved in such a fluid way that one could swear they were real, or everyday household items gathered together

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

and painted with a hint of modesty and tenderness through a touch of light, Smith is arguably talented in more ways than one. The Talladega native uses any medium that strikes her fancy at the current moment. “I use any medium, oil, acrylic, and watercolor,” Smith said. “I also paint on glass and do woodcarving. “I like to do birds. I have a dolphin, and all kinds of caricatures,” she said.

Smith’s love of horses is shown in this piece.

Smith’s woodcarvings are so expertly crafted that you can’t help but do a double take and notice the fine detail in each piece of work. “I can carve almost anything,” Smith said. “I’ve been carving for about 15 years. I’ve been an artist all my life. “It’s a gift God has given me,” she said. Smith said that she first realized she was an artist when she was about 5 or 6-years-old. “When I was little, I won an art contest when I was 9-yearsold,” Smith said. “Two men from New York came to Talladega

to meet me and see my work. They had brought back my little drawing I sent to them.” The two men offered Smith an opportunity to be a part of a prestigious art program in New York, but at the time her parents could not afford to send her there. But that didn’t stop her from developing her artistic talent. “I just continued to go on drawing and painting,” Smith said. Smith is mostly self-taught, but over the years has taken courses with accomplished local artists like Tommy Morehead. “There are just so many people, I enjoy their work,” Smith said. Smith pictured in her cabin workshop located behind her home.

“When I see other artists’ work, it’s just so amazing.” Smith has also been featured in The Daily Home newspaper in Talladega for her woodcarving exhibit at Heritage Hall that also featured some of her mixed media work. “Talladega has so many amazing artists, and I’m just glad to be one of them,” Smith said. Smith has also played the role of instructor herself, teaching tole painting classes to local women in Talladega County for about eight years. Tole painting can be described as more of a folksy style of decorative painting that typically uses household items like furniture, utensils, and other objects as its surface. Smith’s tole painting classes were held two nights a week in her 10

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

home, once her students completed the course they could then take their creation to canvas. “I have painted for commissions and would like to do more commission,” Smith said. When she is not painting commissioned pieces, she is simply having fun and usually draws her inspiration from just about any and everything. Her husband’s red model truck for example, was resting in their cabinet one day but can now be found in her “Old Red Truck” painting against a desert-like background.

People love bringing their four-footed friends along to the lake. Here, Teddy takes a closer look at me as I approach the shore in my kayak.

was unloading my kayak at General Lee Marina when I spotted Drew Sams fishing from a wooden pier. I then noticed he had company. There standing faithfully at his feet was a dog that looked much like my Chihuahua, but not exactly like Taco. “Its part Chihuahua and part Dachshund,” he said. “They call them a Chiweenie.” LeeLa was a little cutie, and she didn’t even bark at me when I approached to take a picture of the two. “I’ve been coming out here for a couple of years now,” Drew said. “My wife was at work, so I said to myself, I would take the dog and go to the lake.”

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

This was LeeLa’s first trip to the lake. “She doesn’t know what to think of it,” Drew said. “I used to come up at least once a month, just to hang out. I usually come up and catch some fish. I always come here (General Lee).” Drew said he used to go there all the time with his dad. “It’s quiet, not a big crowd,” he said. “There’s always a nice breeze and it’s always very peaceful.” I told Drew and LeeLa to have a wonderful afternoon, and I took off in my kayak for a short afternoon paddle. I decided to paddle to Treasure Island, which is visible from General Lee. It wasn’t long before I saw someone – and another dog.

Ed Baldwin of Atlanta takes a break from yard work to play catch and fetch with the neighborhood dog, Teddy.

As I paddled closer to land, “Teddy” waded in the water to take a closer look at me. The black and brown dog just didn’t know what to think about me. I could tell though, Teddy was no threat, just a curious one. On the bank, and up the hill, was Ed Baldwin of Atlanta. He had a leaf blower in hand, sprucing up around his lake home. Ed and I seemed to hit if off. We probably talked for about half an hour, before I realized exactly who I was talking to. I always say you never know who you are going to meet out of the lake. Well, Ed and I have a mutual friend – his mother-in-law – Judy Tipton. I just about turned my kayak over when I found out he was Judy’s son-in-law. Judy, who is retiring this summer from the city of Pell City, serves as the city’s personnel officer and the mayor’s secretary. She’s a devoted city employee and has served many sitting mayors well. “Call her,” I said. Ed tried to contact her on his cell, but Judy wasn’t home. “It’s probably just as well,” I told Ed. “She probably would tell

you to say, ‘No comment.’” You can’t help but like Judy, and of all the people I could meet out on the lake that spring day – her son-in-law. Ed took his three children turkey hunting that morning. It was the state’s youth turkey hunt. “We saw a ton (of turkey) during the deer season,” he said. “They must have gotten the memo though. We only saw one today.” His children are Anna, 17; Chad, 15; 14

and Isbela, 11. “They all like to hunt and fish,” Ed said. “They all love the outdoors.” Which in my book, is great. “This is a beautiful lake,” Ed said. “People are so friendly here.” I agreed, and I headed off in my kayak down river, before I ran into the Blankenship family. Father, brother and sister were out working in the yard, like a lot of folks who live around the lake do during the

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

early spring. “We have lived here since 1984,” said Peggy Blankenship. Her brother, Alan, moved to the lake last year. Both adult siblings grew up on the lake. Peggy, Alan and their father, Doug, were raking up the water oak leaves that had fallen in their yard. “If you don’t rake them up, the grass won’t grow,” Peggy said. They said it was the first nice weekend they had in probably months, so they were enjoying being out by the lake, even though there was work involved. Alan said he was featured once in our Lakeside Magazine. He said we published a picture of him and his bride riding a jet ski. See, you just never know who you are going to see or meet on the lake. But chances are, you’ll strike up a good conversation and maybe meet a new friend. “I like to fish when I am off on Mondays, when there is not a soul out on the lake, Alan said. As summer approaches, the lake will start getting crowded, but during the early spring, the weather is great, and there are not as many people on the water. It was certainly an enjoyable spring paddling trip for me, and I can’t wait to get back on the water again, so until then have a safe and wonderful time on the lake.

t’s that time of year again – time for “April in Talladega.” For the past 32 years, the Talladega Pilgrimage Council has worked hard to promote the history, heritage and warm people of our area, said Evelyn McGehee, president of the Talladega Pilgrimage Council. This year’s events are scheduled for April 12-13. McGehee said the city wide event is attended by our citizens,

sponsored by our citizens and put on by our citizens and is intended for the benefit of our citizens. The event also attracts visitors from the surrounding region each year to experience the heritage of the city. “Truly, every part of Talladega will be involved,” McGehee said. Friday night events that are part of this year’s lineup include the “Ghosts of Talladega” tour of Oak Hill Cemetery at 5 p.m. and 5:15 p.m., and the Wine and Cheese Reception at Heritage Hall, 6:30-8 p.m.

The April in Talladega luncheons are always well attended and it’s best to make reservations early.

This year’s Tour of Historic Homes will feature the homes of Allen and Gayle McMillan, Andrea and George Montgomery, Tommy and Teresa Lacy and William and Evelyn McGehee. The tour will also include parts of the historic campus of Talladega College. The tours will be held Friday and Saturday, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. and are self guided. April in Talladega’s free events include a tour of the Talladega County Courthouse, the oldest continuously used courthouse in the state; “The Emperor’s Cache,” an exhibit of Asian antiques and decorative art at Jemison-Carnegie Heritage Hall; the “Historic Hillcrest Stroll,” a leisurely stroll through the tree-lined streets of the Hillcrest neighborhood; and “April on the 18

Square,” a fun-filled block party with local food, artists, vendors and live music. This year the block party will take place Saturday from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m., on the courthouse square. Talladega’s open container law has been waived for the event, allowing citizens to bring a cooler from home or to purchase beverages from a local bar or restaurant. Last year’s block party was attended by well over 1,500 people, according to McGehee. This year, the popular Taste of Talladega luncheon will be held at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, located at 208 North St. E., at 11:30 a.m., Friday and Saturday. Tickets for the luncheon can be purchased for $15. Also returning to this year’s lineup of

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

events is a cooking demonstration by David Garfrerick of Garfrerick’s Café at Idlewild, Saturday at 10:30 a.m.; and an antique show at Townsend’s Warehouse, located at 206 Coosa St. Townsend’s will also kick off the weekend’s festivities with a preview party Thursday night, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. The weekend events serve as a fundraiser for the Talladega Pilgrimage Council. In the past, the council has donated proceeds from the annual event to benefit local mainstays, such as Heritage Hall, the Ritz Theatre, the train depot and for projects in the city’s historic district. The council’s bylaws state that all of the organization’s funds must be used for the restoration and preservation of Talladega’s historic buildings. Last year, the Pilgrimage Council presented a check for $7,500 to the city of Talladega to help restore the façade of the Kenwin-Waldrop Building, the building between LMo&Co. and the Ritz on the courthouse square. The council hopes that the renovation of the structure, which is owned by the city, will lead to a new business on the square. McGehee said that plans for this year’s proceeds have not been made yet. While the council has bylaws that they must follow, McGehee says that the council is open to requests. Requests can be made by calling McGehee at 256-362-3106 or by visiting the April in Talladega website at April in Talladega information centers are located at the Greater Talladega Area Chamber of Commerce office, 201 East St. S., and at Heritage Hall, 200 South St.

Talladega’s outstanding collection of historic homes on tour welcome visitors for the event.

E. Information can also be obtained by visiting the Chamber website at, visiting the April in Talladega website at or by searching Facebook for April in Talladega.

Tickets for the home tours are $15 for adults and $10 for those 12 and under. Groups of eight or more can receive a discounted rate. Tickets are available at the Chamber of Commerce office and Heritage Hall.

familiar taste has returned to Talladega, albeit with a new name, a new location and a couple of new attractions on the menu. And, it’s just a short drive from your lakeside locations. The predecessor of Takis Grill, Pano’s, did a good business in Talladega, but there were problems with their building, the old Hardee’s building. They moved first to Lincoln, then to 20

Childersburg, but, according to owner Sakratis Kappi, they were always looking to return to Talladega. “There was just nothing else available in town,” he said, “until this building came open,” referring to the former City Buffet Chinese Restaurant in the Wal-Mart shopping center. “We had to negotiate for a few months, but finally we were able to come back.” Pano’s was owned by Kappis’s mother, Nicky, and father,

Sokratis Kappis and his mother, Nicky, at Takis Grill in Talladega. The major difference between Sakratis’s establishment and Nicky’s, known as Pano’s, is the presence of pork chops and country fried steak on the menu and the addition of vegetables.

The menus for the two restaurants are quite similar, although Takis has added fried and grilled pork chops to the menu, along with country fried steak and vegetable sides.

“I would have to say our house specials are our meat sauce and our Alfredo, although probably the post popular would be the grilled chicken salad, the chopped sirloin hamburger and the steaks,” Kappis said about three weeks after opening. “It’s good to be back. It’s like coming back home.” Takis employs 15 people in various positions.

s the lake level rises, now is the perfect time to get your boat ready to hit the waves. “The best time to summerize your boat is shortly before you use it for the first time that summer,” said Mark Hildebrant, sales service manager for Woods Surfside Marina. Hildebrant said that time could be as early as March, but most people summerize their boats in April and May, because that’s when the Logan Martin Lake water level comes up. “You can bring your boat in to have us summerize it, or if you store your boat here, we will do it per request,” he said. Hildebrant said summerizing your boat at Woods Surfside

Marina includes: • Checking and charging the battery. • Inspecting all the fluids and refill them as necessary. • Check the prop. • Inspect the fuel lines. • Inspect the primer bulb, if the boat has one. • Check all the gauges. • Check the horn. • Check the lights. • Check the fire extinguisher. • Crank it on the hose. “The summerization is pretty much the same for both inboard and outboard boats,” he said. Hildebrant said when you summerize your boat, it’s also the perfect time to detail your boat.

Nick Standridge, with Woods Surfside Marina, checks the battery on a boat as part of the de-winterizing process.

“We offer boat detailing,” he said. “Our marina wash includes a full wash of the boat, both interior and exterior, vacuum, seats wiped and cleaned, the cover is cleaned and we clean the bimini top. You can get a fiberglass boat waxed for an additional cost, and you can also get pontoons detailed for an additional cost.” Alan Battle, owner of Alan Battle’s Riverside Marina, said people are starting to de-winterize their boats. “You can do it at the end of March to early April, but you need to wait until there is no danger of freezing,” he said. “You winterize your boat to prevent freezing, and if you get it ready too early and it freezes, it defeats the purpose of winterizing your boat.” Battle said there are different things to de-winterize, depending on if you have an inboard or inboard/outboard boat. “For outboards, you need to check fluid in the lower unit to 28

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

make sure it’s full and clean,” he said. “You make sure the pump is in good condition and pumping water. If it hasn’t been replaced in several years, you may want to replace the water pump.” Battle said you give the boat a good tune-up, and if it is a fourstroke motor, change the motor oil and filter like you do in your car. “For inboard/outboard boats, make sure to check and change the oil and filter,” he said. “You charge the battery, check fluid in the lower unit, make sure all the drain plugs are in place, and crank and run the motor, with a good tune-up if necessary.” Battle said for inboards, you do the same thing except there is no lower unit to check fluid in. “I also recommend a good cleanup and waxing to make the boat run better,” he said. “We don’t offer that here, but there are plenty of places locally that do.”

Couple Enjoys Simple Pleasures of Lake Life Theirs was a great building experience By EMILY ADAMS Photos by BOB CRISP

t’s in a leisurely fishing trip, an afternoon boat ride with the grandchildren, a good book read on the back porch. These are the joys Randy and Mary Ellis delight in at their Logan Martin home. “We’re really simple, and so is our house,” Mary said. The couple has lived on the lake for about 20 years, but is just settling into the three bedroom, three bath home they

Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes - April 2013

moved into in late September. It’s their third lake house, but the first that truly has everything they wanted. “I’d been talking to my wife for at least five years about moving,” Randy said. “This house was built by Jack and Jean Lincoln, who are our friends from church that we knew for several years, but we had never been to their home. We ended up looking at it one day, and we really liked it. It’s all

one level, and we haven’t done much to it besides paint a couple rooms, because we liked it how it was.” When they decided to move from their previous home in Cropwell, the couple had some specific features in mind for their next house. Randy’s priority was a one-step entryway to save his knees that he says could no longer handle the eight steps into their past home. Other must-haves were a large kitchen, an ample-sized master suite with a walk-in closet and an attached garage. They found all of these things in their new home, built in 1993, plus a full basement to top it off. “We still have some things to do to finish decorating, but we’re keeping it the same for the most part,” Mary said. “We liked the wall colors, and we loved the flow of the

house. It’s nice for just the two of us, but there’s also space for when we have family over.” Throughout the year, but especially in the warmer months, the Ellis’s enjoy sharing their lake house with family. They particularly love visits from their two grandchildren, Haley Hawkins, 17; and Colin Ellis, 11 months. “It’s getting harder for Haley to come often since she’s working in the summers now, but she tries to come for a few days every couple weeks,” Mary said. “Colin is our new addition and we keep him some during the week, but we are excited about him getting to enjoy the lake as he grows. I’ve already decided the basement will be the perfect place for him to play and ride around on his toys once we get it cleaned out because it’s a big open space.” Most of Randy and Mary’s waterfront activities involve April 2013 - Lakeside Living & Logan Martin Homes 31

their grandchildren, and their new location on the water should provide even more opportunities for fun. “We were at such a busy part of the lake at our other house next to a marina, so you could hardly let the grandkids play in the water,” Randy said. “You had to be watching and keep them in a small area. Here, the water is pretty quiet, and that’s what we like.” When they’re not entertaining family members, Randy and Mary mostly move between the living room, kitchen and master suite that flow from the foyer in that order. Two guest bedrooms, designated for each of their grandchildren, are located on the other end of the house. In the living room is a multi-colored tray ceiling, built-in bookshelves lining the walls and a fireplace with a mounted flatscreen TV. The room provides a wide open space, 32

something Mary said they’ve never really had before. “At our other homes, we’ve always had separate dens and living rooms that were smaller, so it’s nice to have just one big room,” she said. “I’m planning to get another chair or love seat so we can fit all of our family in here when they visit.” Randy said another picture to hang over the couch will be necessary too. “I picked this one out because it had the lake scene and everything, but I’ve been told it was too small,” he said with a snicker and a glance at Mary. “We can always hang it on another wall.” A sunroom attached to the living room offers casual seating with white wicker furniture and cheery light yellow walls. In what looks like an entertainment center is a bar

built by former owner Jack Lincoln that gives the room a fun detail. The space also lets natural light flow in, along with an expansive view of the water that carries throughout the house via a series of tall windows. “We had a pretty decent view before, but this is definitely the best one we’ve ever had,” Mary said. “The way we’re sitting back on the water gives you such a long view out over it. The water is so relaxing, whether you’re on the boat or just sitting here looking at it.” 34

In the kitchen is an abundance of counter space along with bar seating and an island. China displayed in the room is of special value to the couple. One set of Homer Laughlin dishes was Mary’s grandmother’s and is at least 60-years-old. Another set of Imperial China was a wedding gift from Randy’s family that will be 40- years-old this fall when the Ellis’s celebrate their anniversary. “We have a lot of pieces throughout the house that

belonged to family or were special gifts that mean a lot to us,” Mary said. A few of their treasured items include a Singer sewing table that belonged to Randy’s grandmother and aunt and was refurbished by his late brother in the 1980s, a grandfather clock that was a retirement gift for Mary when the left Bellsouth in 2006 and a stereo from the 1950s that belonged to Randy’s parents. A century-old bookcase and a hall tree are also family heirlooms. “We’re both very sentimental,” Mary said. “We tend to hang onto those types of things.” Continuing to the master bed and bathroom, there is a cherry bedroom suite and a space that will eventually be a sitting area in front of the television. The spacious bathroom has a double vanity, which the couple has never had before and is thoroughly enjoyed, Mary said, along with a shower and bathtub as well as a connected laundry room. “The location of the laundry room is great, because you don’t have to carry your clothes through the house,” Mary said. “It’s usually just the two of us, so we can just toss them in there, and that’s been really nice.” The guest bedrooms are decorated to reflect their grandchildren, one in a nautical theme for Colin, the other

a bright space that opens to the back porch, decorated by Haley. Downstairs in the house is a full basement with a bathroom, which is great for lake days so guests don’t have to walk through the house wet, Randy said. Outside is a big porch with ample seating and landscaping that is beginning to bloom thanks to a few warm days. The couple looks forward to breaking out their pontoon boat and fishing boats when the weather heats up, but not until then. “I just don’t like the cold weather,” Mary said. “It’ll have to be warmer before we get out on the water, but once it does, I plan on having my family out to visit.” Randy, a retired line worker with Alabama Power, and Mary, a realtor with Fields-Gossett in Pell City, like to stay busy with community and church activities at First United Methodist, but say their tranquil home is just the respite they need. “I have always loved the lake, it just took us a while to get to it,” Randy said. “But now that we’ve got this house, we plan to stay here permanently. I always say we’ve got the water and the mountains outside our door. What more do you need?”

Dish It Up! With Lakeside

With so many varieties of pasta, being creative with a recipe is fun. This is the Healthy Pasta Primavera I made.

hat can you not do with pasta? I’m not sure what the answer to that question is because for me, pasta has always offered so many ways to serve anything from seafood to your favorite vegetables to heartier dishes with a variety of possibilities. I’m bringing an antipasto style pasta salad using penne pasta as well as a nice primavera that will get your veggies worked in. I couldn’t resist offering a dish called Spanish Spaghetti with Olives that incorporates a tasty blend of spices and things you may not have thought made a great spaghetti dish, along with my very favorite, a lighter version of an all-

time favorite, Shrimp Alfredo. ( Just don’t tell anyone until they try it that is has about half the fat and calories-they won’t believe you!) So here we go with some pasta adventures I know you’ll depend on as I do! Really, No Guilt Shrimp Alfredo What you need: About a pound of the size shrimp you prefer-I use large (cooked) One fourth teaspoon fresh ground black pepper Two tablespoons margarine-you may need a little more

as you prepare the sauce, depending upon the thickness desired Three cloves garlic Two tablespoons flour Two cups skim milk Three cups fresh grated parmesan cheese Fresh parsley and thinly sliced lemon for garnish Fettuccine-about eight ounces uncooked to serve four

What you do: Chop garlic cloves as finely as possible Melt margarine in a large sauté pan, add garlic and cook until it begins to brown on medium low Gradually add half the milk, letting it warm as it goes, then begin adding half the flour, stirring constantly with a whisk. When well blended, add the remaining milk, slowly, then the remaining flour, blending slowly to prevent lumps. When well blended, add the cheese slowly, a tablespoon at a time, until thoroughly blended. If the mixture becomes too thick, add milk and or margarine as needed while continuing to whisk constantly. When blended, add shrimp, put on low, and let heat thoroughly. A squirt of fresh lemon juice is good here. Serve over cooked fettuccine, top with parsley and lemon slices and serve with hot bread of your choice-the parmesan herb bread recipe I gave last fall is perfect!

three tablespoons chopped parsley. Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add pasta to sauce mixture. Cook two minutes or until thoroughly heated. Sprinkle with remaining parsley and serve. Healthy Pasta Primavera What you need: One-half pound fresh asparagus, trimmed and sliced diagonally into one-inch pieces One-half pound fresh green beans, trimmed and cut into one-inch pieces Two sweet orange peppers, cored, seeded and cut into one-fourth inch strips One pound pasta of your choice-I use angel hair Three-fourths cup two percent milk Three-fourths cup chicken broth Three-fourths teaspoon salt One-fourth teaspoon fresh ground black pepper One-fourth teaspoon ground nutmeg Two tablespoons olive oil Five cloves garlic, sliced thin-but i cut it to three-plenty! Two cups grape tomatoes, halved One-third cup grated Parmesan One-fourth cup flat-leaf parsley, chopped Shaved Parmesan (optional)

Spanish Spaghetti with Olives-and a whole lot more! What you need:

What you do: Cook pasta according to directions, drain and set aside Heat oil in a large skillet over medium high heat, add onion and sauté’ until tender, about four minutes. Add garlic and sauté’ another minute. Stir in oregano, celery salt, red and black pepper and saffron. Crumble beef into pan, and cook five minutes or until beef is browned, stirring to crumble. Gregg Tubbs Has Good Advice for Home Buyers ‘Do your homework before looking’ By MARK LEDBETTER

regg Tubbs, owner of Fairmont Realty in Sylacauga, has been in the real estate business since 1996. The Weaver native moved to Sylacauga in 1996 and began his career working under the late Bob

Meeks. Meeks, who was a civil engineer, builder, realtor and appraiser, was well known in the realty business and the Alabama Association of Realtors named an award after him, the Robert C. Meeks ARPAC Award. “I learned a lot from him,” Tubbs said. While Tubbs primarily sells commercial properties, manages properties and owns properties, he does sell residential properties. The first thing he does when a client approaches him about purchasing a house is discuss their financial considerations. “Financing is as important as finding a house,” Tubbs said. “If they can’t afford it, don’t let the wife look at it.” Tubbs said it is important to determine what the client is comfortable with, what monthly payments they can pay, and their credit score. “Then you can get a game plan,” Tubbs said. “You have to determine in your mind what you feel comfortable with,” Tubbs said. “The bank may say you can afford $3,000 per month, but you may not want to pay but $1,000 per month.” Once you narrow the price range, then you have to determine your needs before your wants. Do you need a four-bedroom or three-bedroom house? Once you determine those needs, then you can

Gregg Tubbs focus on your wants, which may include location and other features. Occasionally, there are properties not on the market but are available. Sometimes, Tubbs is able to put someone who wants to test the market, but without listing, and match them with a potential buyer. Knowledge in real estate is everything. If you are going to buy or sell a house you need to know the true value of the house beforehand. You need to know the size, the quality and location and to get knowledge you have to get out to compare. Important words to use are, “I don’t know but I’ll find out,” rather than try to act like you know, Tubbs said. He is married to Cheryl “Guch” who teaches first grade at Indian Valley Elementary School in Sylacauga. Daughter Katie, 16, is a student at Sylacauga High School and 21-year-old A.J. is a United States Marine MP stationed in Japan. Tubbs said he especially enjoys spending time with 18-month-old Brooklyn. Although he claims that he is not a good golfer, Tubbs said he enjoys spending time on the golf course for the social benefit. “I enjoy being with my buddies on Wednesday and Fridays,” Tubbs said. Tubbs owns Fairmont Realty in Sylacauga and said he has five realtors working for him, and all are “really good and professional,” he said. Tubbs can be reached by calling 256- 249-8574. His office is located at 208 N Broadway Ave in Sylacauga.

Elizabeth Smith

from page 10

“I just set it up and created the background,” Smith said. “I may see something, but not have it in my mind to paint something at that exact moment,” she said. Another painting, “Country Fixins,” depicts a still life of a few household items as a light trickles down on them. Smith is a jack-of-all-trades when it comes to art, and is hardly ever just staying in one distinct box. When she does find herself in a box, she moves to another one. “Right now it’s painting rocks,” she chuckled. Smith uses her paintbrush to create small whimsical animals like foxes, pigs, beetles, bugs, and frogs onto rocks she finds. “I’m in love with whatever I’m doing at the moment,” Smith said. “It could change this afternoon, because I have to paint a picture.” “Art is life,” Smith said. “It’s a love of life, it’s a love of nature. It’s fun too. It’s just fun. It takes me away.”

Smith finds much of the inspiration for her work in nature.
