sacred heart of jesus catholic school Sacred Heart of Jesus Catholic School will hold commencement exercises for 15 seniors at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Bishop Robert J. Baker, S.T.D., will speak. Valedictorian is David Anthony LaFond Jr. He is the son of David and Trish LaFond of Weaver and the grandson of Jim and Mary Ellis of Jacksonville and Mona LaFond of Omaha, Neb. LaFond’s honors and awards include Jacksonville State Emerging Leader, Most Likely to Succeed, Best Personality, Grand LaFond Chessmaster, Quiz Bowl finalist, president of Lunch Table Gourmet and The Walking Club. He was a member of the Beta Club, Thespian Club, Spanish Club, TriM, Mu Alpha Theta, Liturgy Committee and was statistician for the volleyball team. He plans to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville on a Valedictorian Scholarship and major in physics and minor in kerper astronomy. Salutatorian is Maggie Marie Kerper. She is the daughter of Tim and Tracie Kerper of Anniston and the granddaughter of Duane and Dixie Kerper of Birmingham and Bob and Diane Williams of Elkhart, Ind. Kerper’s awards and honors include All-County Volleyball First Team, Miss SHS, Alabama Girls’ State Delegate, Most ValuMcLachlan able Beta, Who’s Who “Best AllAround” and Jacksonville State Emerging Leader. She was a member of the Beta Club, Varsity Volleyball Team, DD Community Service Club, SGA, Mu Alpha Theta and Varsity Softball Team. She plans to attend Saint Mary’s College in South Bend, Ind. on a Madeleva Scholarship. Historian is Jonathan Ryan McLachlan. He is the son of Bryan McLachlan of Anniston and the grandson of Mike Sloan of Decatur. McLachlan’s awards and honors include Highest Spanish GPA Award, Quiz Bowl Top 4, Beta Club Parliamentarian and Portier Scholar at Spring Hill. He was a member of the National Beta Club, Mu Alpha Theta and Thespian Club. He plans to attend Auburn University on a Spirit of Auburn Scholarship and major in chemistry.

Saks High School will hold commencement exercises for 89 seniors at 7 p.m. Thursday at Jack Stewart Stadium. Baccalaureate services will be at 8 a.m. today at First Baptist Saks. Chad Brown will speak. Valedictorian is Caleb Scott Duke. He is the son of Scotty and Lisa Duke of Anniston and the grandson of Calvin Wooten of Anniston and the late Winell Wooten, Charles Duke and Cathy Duke, both of Anniston. Duke was chosen Mr. Echoes, received the Dual History Highest Average Award, was chosen “Most Likely to Succeed,” All-State Honorable Mention, Fab Five and First Team All-County in basketball, was National Honor Society President, a member of Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Relay for Life volunteer and played baseball. He plans to attend the University of Alabama in Huntsville and major in aerospace engineering. He received a Presidential Scholarship, a Valedictorian Scholarship and a basketball scholarship and plans to play basketball with the UAH Chargers Basketball Team. Salutatorian is Jasmine Daniell Moten. She is the daughter of Jolene and Roderick Moten and the granddaughter of Emma Moten of Selma and John Darmond Sr. of Kansas City, Kan. Moten was president of the Senior National Honor Society, vice president of the Student Government Association, captain of the volleyball team and basketball team, a member of Youth Leadership of Calhoun County and Saks Super Seven.

Historian is Dylan Jeffrey Hooks. He is the son of Jeff and Jamie Hooks of Jacksonville and the grandson of Gene and Betty Hooks of Jacksonville, Tom and Rita Heberling of Carrollton, Ga., and Larry and Marie Henson of Albertville. Hooks received the Future Leaders of America Award, Presidential Leadership Award, Congressional Leaders of America Award and the Alabama Association Leadership Award. He was a member of the Student Council Association, Echoes yearbook staff and did community work at Rainbow Omega.
