With school back in session, Deputy Don Hamilton, and about a dozen other area School Resource Officers, are watching over their charges—students who need protection against crime. Hamilton has been working as a School Resource Officer (SRO) with the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office for the past 10 years. He is the longest tenured SRO in the Calhoun County School System and was the second of two Sheriff’s Deputy assigned to the program at its beginning in Calhoun County. Funded by the Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office, the Calhoun County Commissioners, and the Calhoun County Board of Education, the School Resource Officer’s program is one of the fastest growing fields in law enforcement. It has grown in response to the incidents of violence that have taken place in schools around the

country. Hamilton is thankful that law enforcement agencies and school systems have responded by implementing the SRO Program, especially in Calhoun County. “The incidents that have taken place around the nation, Hamilton said, “have created an atmosphere of fear in the hearts and minds of parents regarding the safety of their children at school. I can’t tell you the number of times I have had parents say to me, ‘I’m so glad to see you at the school.’ Hamilton said that the duty of the SRO is threefold. First, they handle all acts that constitute a crime, such as fights, assaults, thefts and anything else of a criminal nature. Second, they sometimes are asked to counsel a student regarding their behavior, especially if it could lead to being charged with a crime. continued on page 2.

Contact the Anniston Police Department at 256-238-1800 School Resource Officer cont. from page 1 Third, teachers invite them to speak to classes on subjects that fall within the realm of crime and laws. The SRO’s overriding task is providing a safe and secure learning environment for the school and at school events. Hamilton, is also a writer in his spare time with two works to his credit, “Some Questions That Must Be Answered: A Guide for Graduates” and “The Four Ghosts of Crowley’s Corner.” He recently used his writing skills to list tips parents may implement to help the School Resource Officer keep children safe: Read the Rules Read and be familiar with the current “Student Handbook and Code of Conduct.” At the beginning of each school year, the student is given a book containing the code of conduct for the current year. This enables the student to know what is expected of him or her in both the academic and behavioral realm. In the back of the book are two pages that have to be signed indicating that these policies have been read and understood by both the student and the parent. It would be a great help in keeping their child safe at school if the parent would encourage and insist that their child abide by those rules. Speed Limit Always observe the speed limit when driving around the school. If your child drives a car to school, encourage and insist that they obey the speed limits, also. Since we have both buses and car riders coming to the school each morning and afternoon, all of our schools have

a traffic pattern established to aid in unloading and loading students safely and as quickly as possible. Keep in mind that the first consideration in this pattern is the safety of the children. Expediency is secondary to that. Valuables Do not allow your child to bring valuables to school. They should not bring large sums of money that they just simply carry around with them. Sometimes students have to bring money to pay for trips and things, or they may have money collected from a fundraiser. It is imperative that they get the money into the hands of the school personnel responsible for collecting it as soon as possible. If for some reason, you do have some item of value with you, don’t display it or boast about having it. Weapons at School Do not bring anything to school that could be considered a weapon or be used as one. We all understand the issue of a gun at school, but heavy chains, pocket knives, box cutters, ninja weapons or anything of this nature will be taken up by school personnel, if discovered. The student can be disciplined and the parent will have to come to the school to retrieve the item if the want it. Courtesy Teach your child to use good old common courtesy and follow the rule of treating others like you would want to be treated. Keep hands to self Teach your child to keep their hands to themselves.

Stay away from Drugs Teach your child to stay away from and report any illegal drug activity at school. Sometimes a child will share that information with a parent. If he or she does, report that to the SRO of school officials. Report Bullying Report any incidents of bullying or harassment by another student towards your child. These will be dealt with as soon as school officials or the SRO know about them. It is much better to head this off than it is to deal with the results. Report any Internet bullying or inappropriate behavior to the Sheriff’s Office at sheriff@calcoso. org. Don't Gossip Teach your child not too gossip. Most fights and assaults at school are started by a “he said, she said” scenario. Talk about Safety Do not be afraid to discuss any safety issue you may have concerning the safety of your child or the school with the SRO. One of our tasks is to be aware of safety issues in and around the school. We are constantly on the lookout for these, but some can be missed. The parents help will be greatly appreciated. One of the best tips that Hamilton added was his desire to see parents involved in their child’s education by being more active in supporting the school they attend. “Parent involvement in children’s lives is vital to our future,” said Hamilton. Anniston police seeks information in investigations Anniston police are looking for information on the offenders who cut the lock on a gate at Hale Building Co., located at 2708 Alexandria Road and stole a Miller Bobcat 225 Welder, valued at $2800. Also stolen was a red trailer that hauled this item. The theft occurred between August 8, 2009 at 6:30 and August 9, 2009 at 10:45. It is believed that a current or former employee could have been involved. On June 11, 2009, Charles Andre Jennings was shot and killed as he walked west bound on 15th street, near Cobb Ave. This case is still under investigation.

On the morning of Saturday, July 18, 2009, Lucretia French’s body was found in the middle of the road on 20th St. between Walnut Ave. and McCoy Ave. She had apparently been assaulted and was bleeding and injured. Frech died on Saturday, August 1 due to injuries sustained during the attack. The Anniston Police Department is speaking to people who had contact with French in the twenty-four hour period leading up to the discovery of her body.

Anniston police are trying to locate Marsha Hanners, who was a victim of a vehicle breaking and entering in 2002. They need to assist her with retrieving her property. If you have any information, please contact the APD Investigative Division at 256-240-4000.
