PUBLISHER’S LETTER

MINDFULNESS MATTERS “There are only two days in the year that nothing can be done. One is called yesterday, and the other is called tomorrow; so today is the right day to love, believe, do and mostly live.” — Dalai Lama

I

t seems that the world has sped up even faster, and everything is happening more quickly than ever before. One of our biggest fears is that of change. Humans like familiarity and the comforting feeling of safety and security that it brings—even though life is always moving and constantly changing, evolving. When we restrict change, we struggle. We are swimming upstream. You can stop struggling now by connecting to your Higher Self or Self Love and start trusting. When you connect to your Higher Power or the unconditional love that you have inside you, it is like discovering a jewel that has strength, wisdom, power, security, abundance and prosperity—everything you need in this life to be happy and joyful. When you struggle and resist change, it is like cheating yourself of the blessings that the Universe brings to you.

KATARZYNA (KASIA) SZUMAL PUBLISHER

Without this opportunity of contrast, we would not be able to access the desire for security within ourselves. As humans, we would never choose to cause upheaval in our comfortable times, but the Universe and our souls know that we need to be pushed into the storm to test our wings and be encouraged to fly. I believe that each of us is meant to fly, be happy and be joyful. If you are not feeing this right now than this issue is for you. The August issue is about mindfulness and the importance of connecting with your Higher Self to feel peace and harmony in your life. If you’ve been struggling with overcoming fears, stress, negative emotions, limiting beliefs, traumas, worries, low self-esteem, finances, physical conditions, self-sabotage, addictions, obsessions, discomforts, anxieties or phobias, please contact one of the lightworkers found in our Business Directory or the advertisers found throughout our magazine. They will help you to release whatever you need to release and raise your vibration, as well as to strengthen, grow and feel love towards yourself and to those around you. We are here to support you on your journey. I am a certified Past Life Regression hypnotherapist and you can call me at 847-966-1110, if you need any support or help. As with all endings, there are always new beginnings. As with death, there is always new birth. You are the change that you are looking for in the world. Until next time,

[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

pushing money into a mega-organization where few resources actually make it to the people we want to help. Regardless of what we see on the surface that seems so very tragic, I have hope and faith that all that’s rising to the surface will cause us to eventually have conversations—not arguments like we’re currently having—to effect change. Often things have to get worse before they get better. I believe that all of this is leading us to a more enlightened place as we stumble and create our pathways through the seeming darkness. Q: I feel like a compass without a direction. How do I find my purpose in life? — Lacking Purpose

Q: I’m realizing that I have a gift for speaking & writing. I’m able to convey information with words in a way that is helpful & captivates, yet I’m stuck; I have this limiting belief that my value lies in conveying content that I’ve learned; almost as if I have to reference someone or something else. Do you have any tips for building confidence around the value of MY ideas, information, and experience? — Shy Captivating Speaker A: Dear Shy Captivating Speaker,

I intimately understand your situation because I’ve been there. I still struggle with confidence off and on as I stretch myself into new situations. If we never experience discomfort, then we’re probably playing in the safe zone. My best counsel is to start consciously putting yourself out there more, even if it’s just with baby steps. As with so many things, we always feel a bit vulnerable and insecure when we have a paradigm shift and start to stretch out into something different than we’ve done before. It’s hard to feel confident doing something that’s new. When a muscle has been underused, we need to start exercising it, because a sense of empowerment and self-assurance generally rises with exposure. Your confidence will build with practice over time…maybe even sooner

than you think, once you see how often your content is passionately received by others. Q: So many are suffering and struggling. I want to help, but I’m overwhelmed and finding it hard to decide where to make donations or put my energy. Any suggestions? — Good Samaritan A: Dear Good Samaritan,

There are extensive needs out there, and it can be tricky to find a way to respond that makes us feel like we’re consciously making a difference. So many people are suffering from compassion fatigue, from continuous weather catastrophes, conflicts, and the oppression of people, piled on top of the “Us vs Them” landscape of politics, healthcare, racial inequality, sexism, education, etc. Phew! It’s difficult to simultaneously process it all and we’re often stranded and feel overwhelmed when trying to choose what to address. We can’t possibly address them all, so it’s best to pick a few topics that tug at our hearts where we feel called to put our money, words and energy to effect change. These are our personal passion projects. I generally recommend keeping support local where we can see the direct impact upon the people in our community. An even better option for me lately is to be responsive to individuals, where the impact is more tangible and personalized. It’s more gratifying than

A: Dear Lacking Purpose,

In the famous, simple words of Joseph Campbell, “Follow your bliss.” You come programmed with passions that light the path you’re meant to walk. This is your first clue for direction and fulfillment. Ask yourself what you’re good at. Is there something that you are or that you do that people ask for your help with? If so, that’s another clue. If you still come up empty, ask people who know you well what they think is special about you. You may get some reflections that surprise you. I would also recommend that you meditate on this question. Don’t judge what arises regardless of how far-fetched it may seem. Honor all inspirations equally and simmer with them from there. Our purpose in life is to love and find connection with people and nature. Regardless of anything else, if we are this, we are living our ultimate purpose. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

WHATEVER THE VEHICLE, LET PEACE BE YOUR DESTINATION

Past Life Regression Hypnotic Session with Kasia Szumal July 11, 2020 by Theresa Puskar During this curious time, when our lives are filled with great mystery and a future that lacks any kind of certainty, it is my deepest belief that the most powerful way we can contribute to the world is by cultivating our sense of inner peace. How can we do so? We are each unique and our lives are tapestries made up of threads of various patterns, sizes and colors that are the culmination of the experiences, thoughts, intentions and choices we have made. The means by which we can seek peace is just as varied as those life tapestries are. I believe that when we set clear intentions and listen to our inner guidance 8

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

as it arises, the means by which we experience that peace will reveal themselves. I feel truly blessed as such has been the case for me during these past several months. One of the vehicles that presented itself to me was hypnosis. Throughout the past 20 years, between my work at Nightingale-Conant Publishing and this column, I’ve had the pleasure of dipping my toes into this phenomenon. This past month, our wonderful publisher, Kasia Szumal invited me to go through one led by her. I’ve already had a powerful healing experience with her, years before we worked together on the magazine, so I trust Kasia; I knew that I was in good hands!

Welcome to another world! As is the case with any new experience, I start in a frame of enthusiastic openness with a sprinkling of cautious trepidation. Before we began, I was introduced to the team of three experts who would drive this particular vehicle: The hypnotherapist was Kasia Szumal, the telepath (person who was under hypnosis) was Monika Lasshan (Moony), and the translator was Ania Massatt. Years ago, when I first experienced hypnosis, I thought that once I went into the process I would lose awareness of my surroundings. This was a misconception. While some may experience this, I did not. As I went into the hypnotic state, I was fully aware of my surroundings because Moony went under the hypnotic trance on my behalf. What I soon discovered, however, is that within minutes, my surroundings would vastly change. So much so, that to start, they were a stretch for my logical mind. That being said, however, I found that each revelation shared with me was supported by sensations, insights or affirmations that arose in conjunction with them. The first thing I was told was that there was an obstruction that stretched from my heart to the top of my head. When I was informed of this, I immediately saw a flat, steel panel or plate. No sooner had I visualized it, then it was described to me in the same form. Hold onto your hat, because this ride gets even more adventurous! The serpent and the frog The day before the hypnotic regression, I did a process with my teachers at O&O Academy in India. It felt particularly potent, as I experienced a great deal of sensations and visualizations throughout it. At one point, a serpent appeared in my mind’s eye and its presence was so huge, I literally opened my eyes and looked down the hall, expecting to see a gigantic serpent slithering towards me. To backtrack a moment, I should point out that I have been doing a great deal of yogic breathing practices and meditations, and I believe that my kundalini has been rising. To add fuel to the gas tank, I had been experiencing chronic aches in my right shoulder blade for the 19 years since my car crash in 2001. As the serpent made her way towards me, she asked if I wanted her to alleviate the source of the pain in my shoulder blade. I was afraid, but I responded, “Yes.” I felt nothing and noted no visceral changes. Fast forward 24 hours to my session with Kasia and her team. After removing the panel in my chest, she informed me that they noted two energies within my heart area—the first, a massive frog and the second, a snake who was chasing it. At that point, I just about rolled off of the couch that I was lying on! Removing energetic obstructions in the etheric body The team led me through a dialogue with the frog, and in the end, I was invited to cast it out of my body and into a neutral zone, where it would no longer energetically interfere with me. At first, I was a bit frazzled, but in the end, I surrendered my

agenda. I felt that if the kundalini was rising and chased out of my body, it could and would rise again at another time. This seems like such a crazy story, but there was obviously something very powerful going on. Since doing the session, the chronic pain in my shoulder has subsided. At times I will feel it, but it is no longer the throbbing ache that I have been experiencing for so long. One of the things that Kasia mentioned was that some of the shifts that were initiated in the session could take up to three months to be fully completed. When hypnosis can be most effective Hypnosis has been known to be of great assistance, especially in situations where you have consciously tried everything you can to deal with something but to no avail. If you have been struggling with overcoming fears, negative emotions, selfsabotage, addictions, obsessions, discomforts, anxieties or phobias, perhaps a Past Life Regression hypnosis session with Kasia and her team could be your answer. This powerfully transformative process was originated by Calogero Grifasi. It takes you on a journey into yourself that allows you to open the doors to your unconscious, so that you can resolve the root causes of problems that you have had difficulty consciously solving. It can assist you in understanding the origins of any blocks you may have, often shedding light on the reason for underlying events and how they influence you today. Each session is 60 to 90 minutes long and is conducted on Skype. If you do not want to be hypnotized, that’s not a problem, there’s a telepathic support person to do so on your behalf (Moony). I am deeply grateful to Kasia and her team for the remarkable healing session that they conducted on me. Fantastical, absolutely. If I were sitting in your shoes, I don’t know if I’d believe it, but I know what I know. To book a hypnotic regression session with Kasia and her wonderful team, you can email kasiaszumal@gmail.com or call 847-966-1110. Additional peace practice There have been other peace practices I have been engaging in as of late that are also very helpful. I have taken part in many virtual online Zoom daily gatherings that anyone can attend. In fact, we have started our own Conscious Community Weekly Zoom Gathering that is open to all. Join us online on Wednesdays Aug. 5, 12, 19 and 26. All sessions begin at 7 p.m. CDT. Click here to register for the session or sessions that fit your schedule, bit.ly/2ASFii9. THE IMPORTANCE OF PRACTICING MINDFULNESS by Jakeb Brock

One of the keys to progressing on the spiritual path is the practice of mindfulness, or getting in touch with one’s higher Self. This is actually the essence of what it means to be conscious. All of us have an inner core of spiritual consciousness that is immortal and eternal. This spiritual seed, though sometimes lying dormant, never leaves us or ceases to exist. It is not only an integral part of our complex inner kingdom; it is our core essence. In other words, it is our true identity. It is the “us” that constitutes the thread of continuity through each life we live on this earthly plane. In each incarnation on the cycle of birth and death, we find ourselves with 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

a new body and a new mind—a body and mind that render that incarnation experientially unique. But our core essence of spiritual consciousness, while being housed in a unique situational framework, never changes. What does change from lifetime to lifetime is the relationship we establish and develop with our core spiritual Self. This is where mindfulness or conscious awareness comes in and can potentially play an important role. Awakening to the immutable spiritual presence within us not only impacts our present earthly experience, but as we embark on the subsequent practice of mindfulness, we find that the

seed inside of us begins to grow and expand. As this occurs, our present life experience often changes dramatically. As our sense of identity shifts from its attachment to the temporal aspects of our humanhood—aspects such as body, mind, emotions, and personality—to our core spiritual essence, we begin to emerge from the shadows of the common human dilemma and to enjoy the fruits of eternality. The seed within us quickly becomes a plant with abundant life-giving fruit—fruit that can in turn feed others. The amazing thing about all of this is that becoming mindful or conscious of our Inner Self and establishing a

vibrant connection to it is not the least bit difficult or burdensome. This is what Jesus meant when he said, “For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:30.) Making our way in this world at the behest of an insatiable egoic identity is much more difficult than turning inward and nurturing our spiritual consciousness. Moreover, stimulating the eternal essence of our being is the way of peace and harmony with the universe, while serving the temporal ego is the way of division, strife, and separateness. Wherever we are in our present life situation can be a starting place for practicing mindfulness. We do not need to rearrange our circumstances or involvements to get started. All we need to do is to set aside a quiet time each day to go inward and connect with our spiritual core. This connecting is called mindfulness because what we are doing is using our human mind as an avenue of spiritual awareness to observe the activity of our inner world and dig down through the various layers of inertia and distraction, until we reach the center of our being. Somewhat paradoxically, we use our mind to cut through what is mostly mental inertia. Consciousness occurs when we touch our center. This experience is also called enlightenment. The instant we make that contact it is as if a light goes on—a light that illuminates our entire inner world. This light exposes all of our strictly temporal thoughts and emotions as nothing more than a kind of static interference. As these are exposed for what they really are, our identification with them weakens. Unconsciousness is a state of total unawareness of these temporal inner workings. The conditioning of modern human life—conditioning that begins at birth and continues steadily and inexorably throughout our lifetime— has brought about a proliferation of temporal thought and emotion that happens all on its own impetus. We do not need to do anything; it happens automatically. We do not even need to pay attention to it. So, we learn to put our inner workings on autopilot.

We cease from any inclination towards awareness. Essentially, we go to sleep. The problem is that while we are sleeping in this unconscious state, a slew of negative influences is seeping into our psyche and having its way with us. These are the natural elemental influences of the earthly plane, such as sin, fearful dualistic thinking, karma and world mesmerism. That is why the human scene is so full of suffering and misery. Unconsciousness is epidemic among us, which in turn renders us vulnerable to the elemental activity of the earthly plane and leads to one situational problem after another. It is truly a progression that speaks of devastation. The antidote to unconsciousness is, of course, consciousness. As the New Testament exhorts: “Wake up, O sleeper, rise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you” (Ephesians 5:14.) Before we can reverse the devastations of unconsciousness we must awaken. We must become aware of all of the inner activity that has been going on by rote. We must recognize the role that conditioning has played in this proliferation of temporal thought and emotion. We must relinquish our former attachment to identifying with ourselves with this unconscious train. How can thoughts and emotions that have been set in motion through psychological conditioning be who we really a amorphous cultural clone? No, who we really are is spiritual consciousness, and this essential “us” can never die. It is alive within us at this very moment, just waiting to be fanned into the flame of full conscious realization. Therefore, the testimony of eternal life that awaits us is truly glorious. Not only is it a testimony of one lifetime’s fulfillment and fruition; it is the testimony of liberation from the cycle of birth and death and the ultimate deliverance from the negative influences of the earthly plane. [FROM THE HEART]

HOW TO GET PAID BIG TIME FOR YOUR CREATIONS by Alan Cohen

Meryl Streep is considered by many to be the world’s greatest living actress. To date she has garnered 322 Best or Supporting Actress nominations, and 164 wins, including three Academy Awards, and eight Golden Globes. Her first Oscar came in 1980 for her Best Supporting Actress role in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979). During the awards ceremony Streep went to the ladies’ room, and left the coveted gold statue on the toilet. For her, acting was the real gold; the trophy it led to was an afterthought. Truly creative people are more interested in the process of creating than its side effects. They do not create in order to get something else. The joy of creating is reward enough. Awards and accolades are not the goal; they are the byproducts of the goal. To dwell in the sacred state of creation is heaven; trying to manage the results is hell. Never deny or withhold your creative gifts. They will pay off first in spirit, and then in the world. When you know you deserve to be paid for your creative gifts and service, you will be. Karen Drucker is a talented career musician who grew weary of playing for corporate conferences, 12

weddings, and bar mitzvahs. After many years of performing pop tunes, she longed to launch out on her own, write original songs on uplifting themes, and perform for people who were actually listening. So Karen decided to take a leap of faith, and establish a career as a recording and concert artist for audiences attracted to music that nourishes the spirit. Initially Karen’s venture was shaky. It wasn’t easy to establish a new career in a field less popular than mass music. She got a few gigs, but there was more space between them than she had hoped, and the income was meager. One day Karen found a musician’s magazine she wanted to subscribe to. On the subscription page she found two rates offered: (1) Regular, and (2) a discounted rate called Starving Artist. Karen started to check the Starving Artist box, then caught herself. Wait a minute, she thought. Do I really want to affirm that I am a starving artist? Karen’s training in new thought had taught her that she would become whatever she thought about herself, and especially how she described herself. She

did not want to identify herself as a starving artist who could not afford the regular subscription rate. So she took another leap of faith, checked the Regular box, and paid the higher fee. Within a few days, Karen received a wealth of invitations to perform, and checks in the mail. Her affirmation of herself as a successful artist became a reality. When she purposely checked the box that represented her ideal self rather than her feared self, that is the person she became. Karen went on to become an extremely successful performer for new thought audiences, traveling around the world, earning an excellent income, and receiving awards for her original music; and now she is a well-fed artist. It is very common for artists of all kinds to think and speak of themselves as starving artists. They do not realize the great disservice they do to themselves and their peers by affirming this lackful condition. Belief systems are reinforced by the spoken word and by agreement. What you call yourself, you become. Take care—great care—to never define yourself or your condition as less than you would like it to be. Always speak of yourself and your work in terms of the ideal conditions you wish to create, and they will follow. There are many ways you can and will be paid for your creativity, some that go far beyond money. At age 61, Andy Mackie had gone through nine heart surgeries, and was taking 15 medications. He was tired of the surgeries, medications, and side effects. So he decided to just enjoy his life, even if his time was short. He quit taking the medications, took the $600 per month he was spending on the pills, bought 300 harmonicas, went into schools to teach children how to play them, and waited to die. When he didn’t die, he did the same thing the next month, and the next. He forgot about dying, and started to live. Andy went on like this for years, using his social security checks to purchase more and more musical instruments, including guitars and drumsticks. Ten years later Mackie was still alive, and had used his money previously devoted to medicine to purchase over 20,000 harmonicas, and 5,500 drumsticks! When he finally left this world, though his physical heart was worn out, his spiritual heart was fully alive. Creativity brings life and rewards you on all levels. You can assess your mental and emotional health by the degree of creativity in which you are engaged. Are you expanding and growing? Are you launching into uncharted territory? HOW TO CONNECT WITH YOUR HIGHER SELF by Shakti Gawain

Your spiritual source is the supply of infinite love, wisdom, and energy in the universe. For you, source may mean God, Goddess, Universal Intelligence, the Great Spirit, the Higher Power, or your true essence. However we conceptualize it, it can be found here and now within each of us, in our inner beings. You can think of contacting your source as connecting with your higher self, the wise being who dwells within you. Being in contact with your higher self is characterized by a deep sense of knowingness and certainty, of power, love, and wisdom. You know that you are creating your own experience of life and that you have the power to create the experiences most important and necessary for your own learning process. We have all had experiences of being connected with our higher selves, although we may not have conceptualized it in that way. Feeling exceptionally high, clear, strong, “on top of the world,” or “able to move mountains,” are indications of being connected with your higher self; so is the experience of “falling in love”… when you feel wonderful about yourself and the world because your love for another human being is causing you to connect with your highest self. When you first become consciously aware of the experience of your higher self, you will find that it seems to come and go rather sporadically. At one moment you may be feeling strong, clear, and creative, the next moment you may be thrown back into confusion and insecurity. This seems to be a natural part of the process. Once you are aware of your higher self, you can call on it whenever you need it, and gradually you will find that it is with you more and more. The connection between your personality and your higher self is a two-way channel, and it’s important to develop the flow in both directions. Receptive: When you quiet your personality during meditation, and come into a “being” space, you open the channel for higher wisdom and guidance to come to you through your intuitive mind. You can ask questions and wait for answers to come to you through words, mental images, or feeling impressions. 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

Active: When you are experiencing yourself as the co-creator of your life, you make choices about what you desire to create, and channel the infinite energy, power, and wisdom of your higher self into manifesting your choices through active visualization and affirmation. When the channel is flowing freely in both directions, you are being guided by your higher wisdom, and based on that guidance, you are making choices and creating your world in the highest, most beautiful way. Almost any form of meditation will eventually take you to an experience of your spiritual source, or your higher self. If you are not sure what this experience feels like, don’t worry about it. Just continue to practice your relaxation, visualization, and affirmations. Eventually you will start experiencing certain moments during your meditations when there is a sort of “click” in your consciousness and you feel like things are really working; you may even experience a lot of energy flowing through you or a warm, radiant glow in your body. These are signs that you are beginning to channel the energy of your higher self. Shakti Gawain (1948-2018) was a bestselling author and a pioneer in the field of personal growth and consciousness. THE IMPORTANCE OF DETOXING YOUR BODY by Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D. Every day, we are exposed to contaminants in our food, water and air that did not exist 100 years ago. These toxins wreak havoc in our bodies, interfering with the many delicate systems that keep us healthy, functional, and alive. The toxins in our environment do more than damage our bodies—they interfere with our ability to raise the quality of our Luminous Energy Field (LEF) making it difficult to readily experience unity with all creation. Today, our chances of enjoying a long and healthy life such as our ancestors once did are greatly diminished. In fact, we are 99% certain to suffer and die from the diseases of civilization: cancer, heart disease and dementia. Only 1% of us will die of old age. The good news is we can change this. When we combine an ancient shamanic healing discipline with cutting-edge neuroscience, we can actually heal disease before it manifests in the body. We can reprogram our biological destiny so we don’t have to relive the illnesses and dramas that run in our families. We can create extraordinary health for the rest of our lives. Years ago, as a young medical anthropologist with a research grant from a large Swiss pharmaceutical company, I spent months in the Amazon looking for a breakthrough cure for cancer, heart disease or dementia. What I found was that these diseases did not exist in the indigenous communities I visited. It was extraordinary. What did these people know about healthy living that we did not? They knew three things: they knew you had to detox the body; they knew you had to upgrade the quality of the energy field so you could upgrade the body; and they knew you had to practice forgiveness in order to heal your emotions. These are the three pillars of the ancient healing methodologies which we call One Spirit Medicine. So, how do you detox your body? The detox begins in your kitchen. Clear out all junk food, sports drinks, fruit juices and sodas. Read labels and toss anything that has ingredients you can’t pronounce. Eliminate everything that is processed, contains preservatives, coloring or additives, and, most importantly, sugar. One hundred years ago, the average American ate five pounds of sugar per year. Today we are eating 200 pounds of refined sugars and another 180 pounds of refined grains that turn into sugars as they enter the bloodstream. In addition to processed foods, you’ll need to avoid the most common substances that cause inflammation:

Gluten-containing products such as wheat, rye, barley and malt in its various forms. The body does not recognize the gluten protein, which produces inflammation. Foods containing gluten quickly turn into sugar—one slice of toast raises your blood sugar more quickly than a tablespoon of sugar. Some people are more sensitive to gluten than others—sensitivity indicators include brain fog, headaches, fatigue, joint pain, poor sleep, digestive problems and leaky gut. Dairy products (cheese, yogurt, milk) are likewise on the list of detox no-nos. Most people are either allergic or sensitive to dairy—as indicated by acne, asthma, runny nose, stuffy sinuses and eczema. Eggs, beans, hydrogenated oils or refined vegetable oils like corn, sunflower, soybean or canola also need to be cleared out. Finally, you need to eliminate chocolate, which contains added sugar, although you can hold on to pure cocoa and add it to your morning smoothie if desired. The next step is to start eating real food (a primarily plantbased diet) and abstain from all foods that turn into sugar for 18 hours each day. Eat a lot of fruits, veggies, sweet potatoes, brown or wild rice, etc. And, remember that alcohol also converts to sugar. As you start to reclaim your biology, you access the higher neural networks in the brain and begin to understand your life journey within a much broader spiritual context. Alberto Villoldo, Ph.D., is an author of the upcoming book, Grow a New Body. Taking a cue from the remote shamanic communities of the Andes and the Amazon—with whom he studied for decades—Villoldo delved into the blue zones of the world where the healthiest and longest living people on our planet reside. FULL MOON - AUGUST 3, 2020 Positive Burst of Activity by Donna Stellhorn Hello everyone, I hope you’re safe and well. There are some interesting energies for this Aquarius Full Moon. If we draw an imaginary line across the chart from the Sun to the Moon, we see that Uranus (the planet of change and disruption) crosses that imaginary line like a big truck running a red light at an intersection. So, as you’re going about the course of your normal routine, someone may drive a big truck through your plans, asking you to change your schedule, to change the way you are doing things, or to hop on board with them. Mercury sits opposite Saturn this month. This energy promotes your ability to do critical thinking, make decisions on important matters and look at situations in your life with a clear head. This aspect is also marked by a feeling of isolation as we all continue to maintain social distance. This energy gives you the ability to assess what’s not working in your life and make changes. It’s also a great aspect for studying a difficult subject—one that requires concentration. If you are thinking of taking an SAT test, or the exam to get a real estate license, this is a great aspect for preparing to take any standardized test. Mars squares off with Jupiter bringing a positive burst of energetic activity. You might be tempted to jump into new projects with optimism and enthusiasm. This aspect does promise quite a bit of success in your endeavors. This is a great aspect for co-creating with the Universe. By using meditation, affirmations or visualization, you can send your messages out and collect the abundance that comes flowing 16

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

back to you. This is a good month to redo your vision board. It’s good to have optimism backed up by action now. When we put all this energy together, it suggests taking a good look at your plans and making changes and then moving forward full speed with the knowledge that the Universe is helping you to succeed.

Aries The harmonious Leo Sun lands in your area of risk-taking, fun and romance. They call it “falling” in love for a reason, and you may take a tumble this month. Finances improve. However, there are some tasks you don’t necessarily want to do. Once those are done, you can reap the rewards. If you’ve been working at home, you may be called back into the office. A career project can go very well. This is also good energy for finding a new position. In general, you have more energy, especially for playing sports.

Taurus You’re noticeable and attracting people to you like a magnet even though your inclination is to stay home. Finances are tied to communication, and there might be a lot of paperwork that needs completing this month. A contract for employment or for your business finally arrives. You have more energy this month to get your list of things done. You may be doing more reading, taking classes or working on your novel. There is positive energy around publishing, teaching and connecting spiritually.

Gemini

School and education, in general, are the focus right now. You may be getting information about the school year or financial aid, or you may be working on your finances in general. Money derived from career looks strong, and you may be getting an opportunity to make more money this month. A friendship could move from the “friend zone” to something much more intimate. It’s good to change your evening routine to get better sleep. A person you admire gives you a wonderful compliment.

Cancer

The focus this month is on pulling in the people around you to help you out. You may feel isolated, but there are people lining up this month who are available for what you need. You may be connecting with a friend from your past, one who you haven’t talked to in many years. A new source of income is quite possible, or you might be getting a new job. Sales are improving which is good news if you’re on commission. Your relationships, in general, improve a great deal. There’s more harmony and laughter.

Leo

There’s very positive relationship energy for you this month despite the fact that you keep getting interrupted by work and other people’s requests. Looking at your personal time management plans would be helpful. Job income shows improvement, and you have the opportunity to get more hours. It would be helpful to find ways to delegate some of the tasks on your to-do list. There’s some wonderful news connected to education or a contract. Negotiations can go your way when you speak up.

Virgo

This month, you may be making a change in your daily routine by adding in meditation or spiritual rituals. This could add a great deal of meaning to your life and bring you countless benefits in the long run. Your charisma is strong, and your house of intimacy is quite active. This adds up to some fun this month. There is a promise of a raise or bonus, and while it’s not quite here yet, you know it’s coming. There could be a temporary addition to the family through somebody visiting or pet sitting.

Libra

Fun and romance, as well as risk-taking, are highlighted this month. If you’re looking for love, you may be zapped by Cupid’s arrow. Spending happens as you may be purchasing some new technology, such as a phone or laptop. You’re allowing some luxuries in your life now, and this is good. Finances improve, especially those connected to business income or investment decisions. A difficult work project may have you procrastinating. Once you get started, it goes quite well. Set up a place for quiet work.

Scorpio

The Full Moon lands in your house of home and family, and you have more interaction with relatives and friends. You may be unpacking from a move or making some renovations, especially around the garden or outdoor spaces. Issues with a neighbor can be resolved with some patience or feng shui. You may be working more hours, which will bring you more money in the future just not quite yet. There may also be a large financial outgo towards educational materials or an online course.

Sagittarius

There’s a focus this month on transportation as well as communication. You might be getting back in the car and even taking a trip. A new work project becomes available to you. There could be a change in your work team, and you may be asked to take the lead. Your finances benefit by you sticking to your budget. An increase in money coming from your job is probable as more hours and sales are available. Romance energy is very strong. This month could be a lot of fun if you’re willing to take a chance.

Capricorn

Finances are under the spotlight this month as you have opportunities to create new streams of income, especially around creative projects or by taking calculated risks. This would be a good month to start your own business. You’re able to meet influential people who could be of help to you. A chance meeting or meeting online could bring some romance. But because of all the inner work and personal growth you’ve been doing, your focus is really on how to improve your quality of life.

Aquarius

The limelight is on you as this is the Aquarius Full Moon. Your relationships get better as people step forward to engage with you, ask for your friendship. Others are supportive now. Money is flowing in, but it’s also flowing out—especially for work equipment or tools for keeping up the house. Your ability to do your job is noticed, and your talents are complimented. Giving yourself more time for rest would be helpful now. Consider less screen time. Instead, find a creative project you enjoy.

Pisces

This month, your growing intuition and spiritual connection with the Universe are emphasized. You may be receiving dreams or messages especially around the number 11. A new contract for employment is possible. There’s the temptation to spend money impulsively—especially on something shiny that catches your eye. Give yourself a 24-hour cooling-off period before hitting “buy now.” There may be the opportunity to gather with friends or someone you haven’t seen in some time. GARDEN GRILLING by Betsy Bruns

I’ve never had much of a green thumb— more like a brown one. Although it’s my mission to inspire others to eat more plants, I’m much more comfortable in the kitchen than in the garden. This year, a friend planted a small garden for my husband and me. Perhaps now I’ll grow a green thumb. We’ve been able to harvest kale and are anxiously waiting for the brussels sprouts, tomatoes and zucchini to come in. 18

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

We are also back to grilling more often. For some reason, we abandoned our grill for a time, but we’re back to firing it up regularly now, and I look forward to grilling our harvests from our little garden one day soon. The truth is most of us are not grilling enough vegetables. Throwing veggies on the barbie is one of the best ways to cook them. The high, dry heat means less cooking time, or nutrients lost in water,

preserving more of the good stuff that makes them so healthy. Grilled vegetables, unlike meat, don’t become toxic from the cooking process. When meat is grilled, a chemical reaction occurs and heterocyclic amines (HCAs) are released. HCAs form when amino acids, which are the building blocks of protein, sugars, and creatine (substances found in muscle) react at high temperatures. When we eat meat cooked

at high temperatures, this chemical reaction can cause mutation in our DNA and can increase the risk of cancer. This chemical reaction does not occur when grilling fruits and vegetables. Not only can we cook plants on the grill without concern about carcinogens, but also grilling is a healthier way to cook veggies as most of the vitamins and nutrients are preserved in the cooking process.

Asparagus: Trim away the bottom inch. Grill time 3-4 minutes

Many kinds of vegetables can be cooked on the grill. For a general rule of thumb, the lower the water content, the better. Plants can be cooked directly on the grill, in a basket, or on a grill mat. They are delicious plain, without seasonings or sauces. If “sauce is boss” for you, skip the oily marinades. Oils are not needed for flavor or nutrition, and they add unnecessary, unhealthy fats.

Portobello mushrooms: Remove dirt and stem. Grill 3-4 minutes on each side.

Peppers: Seed and cut into quarters. Grill time 8-9 minutes Onion: Peel and quarter. Grill time 8-9 minutes Eggplant, squash and zucchini: Cut lengthwise into long strips, about onequarter inch thick. Grill time 7-8 minutes.

Place peaches cut side down on the grill and grill for about four to five minutes per side, until grill marks appear and peaches are slightly softened. While peaches are grilling, prepare the glaze. Add vinegar to a small saucepan over medium-high heat. Boil vinegar until it is reduced by half and looks thick. Add sugar, lemon juice, and almond extract. Remove peaches from the grill and place cut side up on a dessert dish. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and garnish with a mint sprig. Betsy Bruns is a plant-based health coach, “Food for Life” instructor with the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM.org), and an Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT) practitioner. When she isn’t making healing food taste like comfort food, or helping clients tap away stress and cravings with EFT, she’s soaking up nature and dreaming of ways to make life more delicious for all beings. Visit www.Vegsetter.com.

My go-to marinade is smoky and light, using ingredients you probably have in your pantry. However, you can use your favorite recipe, grab a store-bought brand, or opt for simple seasonings and spices.

EASY SMOKY MARINADE Marinade time: 1-3 hours Whisk together: ¼ cup apple cider vinegar ½ cup low sodium vegetable broth ¼ cup aquafaba (juice from a can of chickpeas) 2 tablespoons tamari, liquid aminos or low sodium soy sauce Liquid smoke to taste (optional) ½ teaspoon garlic powder ½ teaspoon smoked paprika Pepper to taste Guide for veggie grilling: Preheat clean grill to medium-high heat. Lightly coat rack with cooking spray, unless using grill mat or basket. If desired, you can lightly coat your veggies with cooking spray, too. Now, throw them on the heat and listen for the sizzle when the veggies hit the grate. Don’t move them for three to four minutes, or half of the cooking time, to get good marks and that signature grilled flavor.

GRILLED PEACHES WITH SWEET BALSAMIC GLAZE Makes 4 Servings We are now in peach season. Sometimes, my eyes are bigger than my stomach, and I end up with a bushel or two. There are so many ways to enjoy peaches. You can eat them plain, use them in smoothies, oatmeal, pies, or make preserves. But have you ever grilled one? If not, try this delicious dessert recipe from the Physicians Committee. It’s doctor approved. 4 ripe peaches, halved and pitted Butter-flavored vegetable oil cooking spray (to taste) ½ cup good quality balsamic vinegar 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1 teaspoon almond extract Fresh mint sprigs (to garnish) Heat gas grill to medium-high. Coat peach halves with cooking spray (use about two sprays per peach half). WWW.CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER August 2020 by Bernadette Evans

Overview This month, we do have some movement. Mercury stationed direct the middle of last month,

Saturday, August 1

but there are still delays with Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto all retrograde. Four

There could be an opportunity for you to dig deep into your inner well when Mercury opposes Pluto. You may experience some breakthroughs if you decide to go see a counselor. Being alone with your thoughts is never a bad idea. You’re eager to get to the bottom of your issues to see what you can discover. The Mercury-Pluto opposition could be shining a light on all your hard work. You’ve been putting in time working on a creative project, one where you followed your intuition and did your research, and it’s about to pay off. The Moon is in Capricorn.

of the five are in Earth signs and one in Water. Earth and Water both move slower than Air or Fire. I’ve heard from many people who’ve said that during this time they’ve started taking a class or started painting—something they feel they wouldn’t have been able to find the time to do before. So, that’s a positive takeaway. Then at other times, you might be reminiscing about life before COVID-19 and wishing for things to return to the way they were. A new movement, a new way of life is in its gestation period—not quite ready to be born. I know it can be scary to let go of what you’ve come to know—what’s comfortable—but trust that the Universe has your back. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete its orbit through the 12 signs, staying approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is Void of Course (VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets before it leaves the sign it’s in. At these times, it can be difficult to get focused and accomplish a task. You may want to relax, meditate or do something where your focus is turned inward. Don’t try and get a new project off the ground when the Moon is Void. If you want to find out more about the Void of Course Moon, check out www.moontracks.com. The times below are listed in Central Daylight Time (CDT).

Sunday, August 2 When the Sun squares Uranus, you may feel the need to defend your position about a certain subject. A part of you could be rebellious and ready to do battle with whoever opposes you. Instead of preparing to go to war, put your sword down. Your restlessness would be better fed using this energy to be an explorer in your own backyard. Have fun, do something out of the ordinary. Just don’t do anything dangerous. Moon VoC at 8:59 a.m. until 1:11 p.m. when it enters the sign of Aquarius.

Monday, August 3 The focus for the Full Moon in Aquarius is finding the balance between doing what works for you and you alone or doing something that supports a relationship or the collective. The 22

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE AUGUST 2020

Full Moon is always about releasing something, maybe an old belief, a relationship or a job that’s been holding you back that you are ready to let go of. It’s time to come out of the shadows and let your light shine for all to see. You’re wise and have a lot to contribute to the planet. The Full Moon in Aquarius at 10:59 a.m.

Tuesday, August 4 When Mars squares Jupiter, the air is electric and you could feel like you can take on the world. You have energy galore and may feel quite exuberant. Enjoy, have fun, but be careful that you don’t do something too quickly and hurt yourself. With all this energy, you could feel like you can do it all, but I just want to caution you about promising others more than you can deliver. You mean well and think you can do everything, but you might just run out of steam. Mercury enters the sign of Leo at 10:32 p.m. Moon VoC at 4:45 p.m. until 9:28 p.m. when it enters the sign of Pisces.

Wednesday, August 5 Being open to the Universe and having faith in the process is paramount. When the Moon sextiles Uranus, you have the opportunity to crack open the egg and see what emerges. Creation is beautiful and messy. You never know what to expect when the Moon and Uranus get together and that can be half of the fun.

Thursday, August 6 There’s the possibility of a misunderstanding (on your part or someone else’s) which could create friction. The Moon-Neptune conjunction can make everything about as clear as mud. So, get clarity from others and be super clear when speaking, so everyone knows where they stand. A great use of this energy—if you feel like it— is to create something. You don’t have to be a Picasso, just create for the sheer joy of it.

Friday, August 7 You may be assessing your relationships and what you value when the Moon squares Venus. You know what your beliefs are and what you desire in a relationship, as well as what you can put up with and what you just can’t do anymore. Wishing and hoping that it’s different doesn’t change the way it is. It may be time to act on your feelings. Venus enters the sign of Cancer at 10:21 a.m. Moon VoC at 7:53 a.m. until 8:05 a.m. when it enters the sign of Aries.

Sunday, August 9 It may feel like the walls are closing in around you when the Moon squares Saturn. You could feel depressed and not sure how to escape your circumstances. What if you look at things from a different perspective? By dealing with one thought at a time, you’ll be able to manage the day and your emotions. Remember this too shall pass and more importantly, you’re not alone. Moon VoC at 2:50 p.m. until 8:28 p.m. when it enters the sign of Taurus.

Monday, August 10 You may feel easily distracted when Mercury squares Uranus. The Moon, Uranus and Mercury are all playing together today, bringing with them a need to change up your routine and maybe how you view things, as well as how you express yourself. You have a lot going on in your head and you may not say things exactly how you mean. This could lead to possible misunderstandings, and that’s what they are, misunderstandings. Just explain yourself more clearly, or if it’s the other person, get them to clarify what they mean.

Tuesday, August 11 You may feel irritable when the Moon squares the Sun. Things just aren’t coming together in the way you’d like. And if you haven’t been paying attention, or giving enough time to your relationships, there could be a mini-explosion today. So, make your apologies and you’ll be back on track.

Wednesday, August 12 It may feel as if you’re trapped inside one of those carnival funhouses with all the mirrors and tilted floors. Everything looks distorted when the Sun quincunx’s Neptune. It’s just an illusion, so don’t despair. You just need to make a few adjustments to whatever’s not working and the floor will become stable and the mirrors will disappear. Moon VoC at 2:55 a.m. until 8:46 a.m. when it enters the sign of Gemini.

Thursday, August 13 You could feel like you’re fighting against the system when Mars squares Pluto. How can you take charge of your life? Can you create structures that will support you? Examine what’s happening in your world and make the appropriate changes that will support you and not stifle you or anyone else.

Saturday, August 8

Friday, August 14

The Moon-Sun trine may bring with it feelings of easy confidence and self-assurance. There’s a sense that you’re happy and at peace with who you are and what you’ve accomplished. You can breathe a sigh of relief; it feels like things are coming together.

The Moon is Void in Gemini for a good portion of the day before it moves into Cancer. Take the time to listen to what other people have to say, instead of going full-steam ahead with your ideas or plans without their input. Everything will run a lot smoother when you’re all on the same

page. Moon VoC at 6:19 a.m. until 6:35 p.m. when it enters the sign of Cancer.

Saturday, August 15 You may feel like spending time with your loved ones when the Moon conjuncts Venus. It’s easy to be warm, nurturing and generous when you feel this good. Remember to take the time to pamper yourself today, just as you do for everyone else. Uranus Stations Retrograde at 9:25 a.m.

Sunday, August 16 The Sun-Mars trine could give you the boost you need to get a new project off the ground or to finish up work on something that’s been on the back burner for a while. When you have this much gas in the tank, you should put it to good use. When you need a break, get some exercise. It’s good to do something physical that moves the energy through the body/mind. Moon VoC at 6:59 p.m.

Monday, August 17 You’re excited to share your ideas with others when the Sun conjuncts Mercury. Others may not be able to get a word in edgewise until you stop to take a breath! So, enjoy this energy and your boundless enthusiasm to connect and bounce ideas off of friends. Remember a real conversation involves two people; give others the space to share their thoughts as well. Moon enters the sign of Leo at 12:38 a.m.

Tuesday, August 18 This month’s New Moon is in Leo. With the Sun, Moon and Mercury all conjunct you could find yourself being blunt in all your dealings. Time is precious and you don’t have time to beat around the bush. Be open and honest in your communications to build a foundation of trust and respect. There’s also a huge focus on building relationships, whether they’re romantic ones or platonic. Tap into your inner child and rediscover the joy you used to have when you played. Take some time to have fun and be creative, and in whatever you choose to do, be passionate and go all in! New Moon at 9:42 p.m.

Wednesday, August 19 You’re anxious to begin a new venture when the Moon’s in Virgo. You have all the details mapped out as to how to proceed. Whatever you focus on, your determination and bravado can carry you a long way. So, roll up your sleeves and get started, it’s going to be exciting. Mercury enters the sign of Virgo at 8:30 p.m. Moon VoC at 12:38 a.m. until 3:20 a.m. when it enters the sign of Virgo.

Thursday, August 20 When the Moon opposes Neptune, you may not be seeing situations or other people clearly. You’re sensitive and could be seeing things WWW.CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

that aren’t really there. All this does is amplify feelings of fear and suspicion. Everything just feels a little off. Don’t take the energy too seriously or do anything drastic. Instead, use this energy to get lost in a creative project, or binge a series on Netflix. It will be over before you know it. Moon VoC at 10:37 pm.

Friday, August 21 The Moon in Libra encourages being social and hanging out with friends. It may take some ingenuity when gathering with your friends, but even with social distancing, you can still do it. You may also want to spruce up your home with some new decorations or go out to a park and admire the beauty in nature. Moon enters the sign of Libra at 4:16 a.m.

Saturday, August 22 Happy Birthday my dear Virgos! The MoonJupiter square heralds a time of generosity and wellbeing. Your emotions may be exaggerated, but you’re feeling quite positive about the day and why shouldn’t you! Everyone needs a little sunshine and focusing on the positive lifts your vibration and brings in more of the same. Enjoy this time for what it is. The Sun enters the sign of Virgo at 10:45 a.m. Moon VoC at 11:20 p.m.

Sunday, August 23 Guidance could be coming in loud and clear when the Moon sextiles Mercury. You know what you need to do and aren’t afraid of rolling up

your sleeves and doing the hard work. You know it will pay off in spades. Not to mention, it feels good when you put your mind to something and accomplish your goals. Tuning into your feelings comes easier today allowing you an opportunity to express yourself. You could also be called on to be there for a good friend who needs a shoulder to cry on. Moon enters the sign of Scorpio at 5:16 a.m.

Monday, August 24 When Mars squares Saturn, any insecurities you have may rear their ugly heads. There’s the possibility that you’re paralyzed by fear. You’re so worried about how well you can do something, that if it isn’t up to your standards, you don’t do it at all. There’s also the chance of an outburst if someone points out that your work isn’t up to par. Careful of stomping your feet and raising your voice to be noticed. That is not the kind of attention you want.

Tuesday, August 25 You could be bursting with energy, passion and enthusiasm about future possibilities. Ideas are coming in fast and furious. When Mercury trines Uranus, your curiosity propels you forward. You could be exploring new ways of communicating. Maybe you’re thinking of doing some writing or starting a podcast. Do whatever excites you, just make sure the idea isn’t just that an idea…run with it. Then to top it off, Venus opposes Jupiter. This combination could be tempting you to ignore work and just have fun. Try for some balance… work for part of the day and then enjoy the evening with friends. Moon VoC at 1:27 a.m. until 7:49 a.m. when it enters the sign of Sagittarius.

Wednesday, August 26 Emotions run deep when the Moon’s in Sagittarius’ domain. You feel affectionate and benevolent towards those you care about and are not afraid to show it. The other side of a Sagittarius Moon is that you or someone else might say something that causes hurt feelings. Sagittarius can be blunt. Is it necessary to say what you’re going to say? Is it better to just let something go? It’s up to you.

Thursday, August 27 Both connecting with others and being of service are highlighted when Venus trines Neptune. Your empathy and compassion are shining through and you want to be of service and give back to the community. This is also a great time to kick back and relax with your partner or a friend and watch a movie. Romance could also play a part. So, light the candles, have a nice meal and see where it takes you. Venus trines Neptune is lovely, and you may want to bring more beauty into your environment. Go buy some flowers or decorate,

it’ll spruce up the place and make you happy. Moon VoC at 7:00 a.m. until 12:37 p.m. when it enters the sign of Capricorn.

Friday, August 28 When the Moon trines Mercury, your emotions and your rational mind are working in tandem. You could find your intuition is guiding you and has given you a roadmap as to the best route to take. This is also a great time to write. Whether it’s for your job or your own pleasure, the words flow a lot easier.

Saturday, August 29 This is a great day to get some work done. There are a few energies that can assist you, but the Mercury-Jupiter trine (if put to good use) will help you put your plans into motion. There’s a feeling of hope and positivity in the air, but you still need to work. It won’t just happen magically. Have fun putting the pieces together. Moon VoC at 2:31 p.m. until 7:37 p.m. when it enters the sign of Aquarius.

Sunday, August 30 When Mercury opposes Neptune, your antennae pick up so many signals that the good messages are garbled and mixed in with the junk. Take a break from all the noise, the sound of your mind, the outside world, and other’s opinions, and just sit quietly for no reason but to just be. A word of caution; confusion and misunderstandings may abound, so be careful and don’t make any permanent decisions until you have more clarity. Venus and Pluto are also in opposition, reiterating that relations with others could be intense. There may be a power struggle, as someone is trying to get the upper hand. If you can, have a conversation where you both walk away feeling the agreement was fair and just.

Monday, August 31 You may feel like you’re walking a tightrope as you try and find solid ground when the Moon quincunx’s Venus. There’s a possibility that you’re making compromises in your relationships that aren’t sitting well. As long as the compromise doesn’t make you forgo your core values and beliefs, see if you can come to an understanding that works for both of you.
