[COMMUNITY Q&A]

ASK ALECIA by Alecia Rice

Q. If you were guiding us towards new directions for self-improvement in 2018, what would you suggest? — DIY2018 A. Dear DIY2018, I’d suggest that we take 2018 as the year to set ourselves free by BE-ing instead of DO-ing. Every year most of us make some sort of resolution to “do” something different, yet there’s no more room on our “To-Do” list. How about we start a “To-Be” list? I’d suggest beginning a practice of observing ourselves ... without judgment. Most of us are our own worst critics ... constantly. Whether conscious of it or not, most of us judge ourselves much worse than we judge others. This leaves us playing the role of both the jailed and the jailer, often not realizing that we have the keys to our self-imposed prison bars in our back pocket. We may not be immediately successful, but as we grow our consciousness around it, we can begin to notice and suspend the pattern of negative self-talk. We can then practice backing out of old negative thought loops as soon as we see them, creating gentleness and forgiveness around them along with conscious redirection. Sometimes it may be helpful to question ourselves by thinking of one of our most beloved people and imagining what we’d tell them if they were judging themselves in the same way. With consistent practice, we’ll catch ourselves in the act red-handed, eventually realizing that we’ve neutralized the

pattern with practice by applying loving attention through conscious intention. Q. I’ve recently seen my wife through a long and difficult battle with cancer. I’m a lonely elder. What is the appropriate amount of time to wait before dating? — Lonely Elder A. Dear Lonely Elder, Caregiving is a hard, and often painful, sacrifice. I honor you for walking that path. I don’t think there’s necessarily a “right” amount of time to wait before dating, as that’s a personal choice. While we might be cognizant of the feelings of others, especially family, ultimately we have to decide what’s right for ourselves. We’re capable of holding two opposing thoughts and feelings at the same time. You can both have cherished your wife AND feel relieved that it is now over, while possibly feeling guilty about thinking about dating. Please be gentle with yourself and don’t feel shame for thinking about it. You are human and you have needs. People move through the grieving and healing processes at different rates. While you may feel that your grieving began as your wife experienced her decline, others may be in a more recent stage of grief that only started on the day she transitioned. If you’re concerned about family members, like children or grandchildren, I’d suggest that you discuss it honestly with them. If you do,

please keep in mind that some family members may feel tender and project feelings that you are “wrong” by bringing someone in to “take her place”. It may be a bit more difficult for some to grasp how you could consider moving on “so soon”. With clear communication, gently remind them that you loved her so much that you cared for her until the very end. This cements your devotion to her. Stating that there can never be a replacement for her also assists in understanding that this isn’t about your deceased wife, but about your needs as a human being for companionship, love, joy and human touch. Filling in the gaps in this way can be helpful to them by seeing that you’re not trying to replace her, but that you need to move forward towards a life that is connected and more fulfilling. Since you’re in your senior years, I’d emphasize that it’s not like you have an endless amount of time left to sit in waiting until others can feel right about your choices. You can’t live your life for others, as they aren’t the ones who go home to an empty bed. As a caution, I’ve learned that STD’s are rampant in some senior communities. These elders have been married throughout the “sexual revolution,” and are past childbearing age with no fears of pregnancy. They haven’t kept up with the times, yet they’re enjoying a bit of a frolic without protection. While I’m happy they have the freedom to explore, one needs to engage in an appropriate conversation in advance while being cautious during intimate encounters. Please know that you have the right to keep this to yourself for awhile. This allows you to test out the waters sorting through your own feelings before discussing it with others. FEEDING THE WHOLE SELF

Interview with Michael Greger, M.D. Interview by Janae Jean and Spencer Schluter recently released companion book The How Not To Die Cookbook. He is also the founder of the not-for-profit NutritionFacts.org, which is dedicated to sharing the latest nutrition research in an easy to digest manner.

Our first podcast guest of 2018 is Michael Greger, M.D. Dr. Greger is the co-author of the New York Times bestselling How Not To Die, and the 10

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

JANUARY 2018

In How Not To Die and The How Not To Die Cookbook, Dr. Greger’s research supports a “whole foods, plant-based diet.” This type of diet has been shown to prevent many diseases including the leading causes of death. The recipes in this month’s HEARTh & HOME are perfect if you want to enjoy a whole foods, plant-based meal. Below are only a few of the questions from our brief, but informative, 30-minute conversation with Dr. Greger. Listen

to the audio podcast on the Conscious Community Magazine website: www. ConsciousCommunityMagazine.com, Stitcher, iTunes, GooglePlay, Facebook or YouTube to hear more of Dr. Greger’s research-backed approach to diet and wellness. — J.J. Janae: Would you explain to us the medical establishment’s current model versus what you are presenting in your books, which is a plantbased diet? Why does the medical community not recognize diet as preventative medicine? Dr. Michael Greger: The best available balance of evidence suggests that the healthiest diet is one that minimizes intake of meat, eggs, dairy

and processed junk, and maximizes the intake of fruits, vegetables, legumes (which are beans, peas, split peas and lentils), whole grains, nuts and seeds, mushrooms, and herbs and spices. Basically, real food that grows out of the ground; these are our healthiest choices. Unfortunately, doctors have a severe nutrition deficiency in education. Most doctors are just never taught about the impact health and nutrition can have on a course of illness. So they graduate without this powerful tool in their medical toolbox. Now there are institutional barriers too, such as time constraints, and lack of reimbursement. In general, doctors simply aren’t paid for telling people how to take better care of themselves. Of course, drug companies also play a role in influencing medical education and practice. You can ask your doctor the last time they were taken out for dinner by “Big Broccoli,” it’s probably been a while. Spencer: One of the things that I thought of when I was researching this was that the average American is very sedentary and eats a terrible diet. We are eating a highly processed descendant of the traditional American subsistence farmer’s diet. I see the utility of eating a more plantbased diet for the average American. The average American doesn’t work like they used to, but there are Americans who do. My question is, what do you suggest for somebody who works in construction and they’re working six days per week, 12 hours per day doing extremely grueling physical labor? What would you suggest for people who are not sedentary, who lead very physically intense lifestyles? MG: You absolutely can get as many calories as you want on a whole foods, plant-based diet. There are calorically dense plant foods, such as nuts, seeds, nut butters, avocados, dried fruits, trail mix, smoothies … you can pack so many calories in smoothies. JJ: One thing that I thought was really interesting in the book was when you talked about spices, like turmeric and ginger, and the benefits

of those. Would you like to tell us a little bit more about that? MG: Yeah, so that’s actually one of my ”Daily Dozen.” My “Daily Dozen” recommendations are all the things that I encourage people to fit into their daily routine. So, on the exercise front, it’s 90 minutes of exercise per day seven days per week. Another one of the “Daily Dozen” is a quarter teaspoon of turmeric, the yellow spice that makes curry powder yellow. There are over 50 clinical trials that have tested turmeric against a variety of diseases: lung disease, brain disease, and a variety of cancers. It has been shown to make colon polyps disappear, speed recovery after surgery and effectively treat rheumatoid arthritis better than the leading drug. Also, it appears to be effective in treating osteoarthritis and other inflammatory conditions, such as lupus and inflammatory bowel disease. I recommend a quarter teaspoon per day as one of my “Daily Dozen” recommendations. JJ: We hear a lot about matcha these days. Is the benefit of matcha as great as it seems? MG: Matcha is even better than green tea because when you make green tea you take the leaves and you dump them in the trash. So you only get the few water-soluble nutrients that leaching out of the tea. Basically, it’s like boiling some collard greens and throwing away the greens and drinking the water. That’s crazy! So matcha allows you to actually eat the leaves themselves. You get all the nutrition from the tea leaves. You can also throw tea leaves into a smoothie if you have a powerful enough blender. The issue is that you have to make sure that the matcha is sourced from Japan, not from China because only recently did China get rid of leaded gasoline. So if you measure the leaded concentrations in the tea plantations in China, particularly next to the highways, the lead concentration in Chinese tea leaves is too high. Not a problem if you brew tea because the lead stays in the leaves and you throw it out with the bag. If you’re actually eating the tea in

a smoothie or matcha, then you’re getting the lead absorption. So you have to make sure it’s sourced from Japan. SS: A lot of people, particularly Americans, have a rather bland palette when it comes to flavor. Do you have any suggestions as to how they can get those spices if they don’t necessarily like them in their food or don’t want to taste them? Are there ways to supplement those spices and still get the advantage of them dietarily without having to necessarily taste the flavor? MG: Yeah. Fresh turmeric is actually, surprisingly, a much more mellow flavor than dried turmeric. So instead of a quarter teaspoon of turmeric per day, if you can find a good Asian market, you can slice off a little half inch piece. They come in these little fingers…a half inch slice and chop it up, and people won’t even taste it. It can kind of stain your fingers. So that’s what I would recommend. For people who really just don’t like the stuff … turmeric is so potent…you’re just talking about a quarter teaspoon of it per day…you could stuff that into capsules. I encourage people to explore all these worldly cuisines, and they might surprise themselves. There’s more to life than burgers, fries and milkshakes! Janae Jean serves as editor, social media manager and podcaster for “Conscious Community Magazine.” She has an M.M. degree in computer music composition from Johns Hopkins University and is actively researching using electronically generated sounds for healing. [ALL ABOUT TOWN]

SEATED POSE EXTENDED GONG BATH

Infinity Foundation – Highland Park, IL, December 8, 2017 by Theresa Puskar in this gong bath with a friend, I discovered that Richard’s reputation in the world of sound frequency healing is unparalleled. He has been working on the earth gong for 20 years and has played it thousands upon thousands of times.

Richard Rudis and Theresa Puskar I have never journeyed to such a deep place - a place that extended beyond the earth’s atmosphere into different planes of existence and awareness… without even leaving my seat! I had the great privilege of attending Richard Rudis’ “Seated Pose Extended Gong Bath™” at Infinity Foundation on Friday, Dec. 8. While I have attended other sound healing events, I have to say that this one was literally out of this world! After sharing the power of my experience 12

“This (seated) position is both in the spiritual tradition and the science of sacred form. Energy moves up from the Earth and through the central column, touching on each of the chakra points, emerges to join with ‘Wisdom’ consciousness, which is then returned.” — Richard Rudis Richard introduced the bath as a “second level” experience, explaining that each experience builds upon itself. There were several physical healings that luxuriating in this delectable and restorative fluid of sound offered, including the expansion of the nasal cavities, the lowering of blood pressure, the rising of oxygen intake and the release of energetic blockages in the body. Richard created this particular sound healing to align specifically to the

Taurus energy. He created it within a geometric structure and energetic flow to support that energy. While he plays, he works through each of the chakras in our bodies. He attempts to stay aware of his audience. However, that being said, he later shared that we all dissolved away in his experience, so much so that he was surprised to see us all sitting there when he completed the session and opened his eyes. What I experienced during the gong bath blew my mind. As I drank in the delicious ear candy, I was transported to a place that I can only describe as otherworldly. The first sound I heard overlaid above the reverberation of the gong was the calling of whales. I was immediately transported to a whale-watching expedition I went on with my mother decades earlier when I lived in Vancouver, Canada. This was one of the most magical and powerful miracles I have ever experienced in my life. The organizers of our expedition were particularly respectful of the massive creatures. Because of this, they were careful not to chase them and kept the

boat quite a distance from the pod. While I was disappointed, I appreciated their commitment to the whales. They turned the boat engine off, and we sat watching the distant mammals. I then had an intuitive hit to focus my attention on two particular fins. I began to pray to those two whales. I told them how much I loved, honored and respected them, and then in my mind, I asked them to come to our boat. What happened next

to another. I was amazed and in awe! I don’t think, I KNOW, that Richard took me and my fellow attendees on a delicious, delightful and deep-healing journey. Many thanks to Richard for his dedication, creative genius and deepest passion for what he does. Theresa Puskar, our All About Town contributor, is a writer, trainer, speaker, minister and inspirational audiobook producer. She is the author of a solo show and workshop, “Beauty,

Bollywood and Beyond,” along with “The Terri Series” – seven children’s books that focus on bullying, honoring diversity, celebrating creativity, nonjudgment of emotions, finding alternatives to technology-based entertainment, discovering a non-judgmental God, and overcoming fears. She has also recorded a powerful experiential audio program, “How to De-Clutter Your Mind and Live a Heart-Centered Life.” To place orders or learn more about her upcoming engagements, visit her website, www.theresapuskar.com.

was extraordinary; the two whales left the pod and headed towards us. One swam under the boat and breached just beyond the starboard side. The other breached out of the water right beside me. In response, I instantly became a child again. I was filled with awe and innocent delight. For a few seconds, I laughed and cried; I literally forgot myself. I believe that my whale friends felt my love and subsequently responded to it by coming by for a visit. As I heard the whale calls during Richard’s sound healing, I was transported back to that place of complete joy and freedom. For that, I am deeply grateful. I also heard the song of the dolphins intermingled with his magic, along with the chants of monks. It was as if Richard was the pilot on a sonic spaceship that took us out to other worlds and different planes of existence. Once the 90-minute bath was completed, I approached Richard for photos and I was provided with an additional magical and mystical ride. When we discussed his performance, he informed me that he often manipulated the sound through the chi in his hands. He then proceeded to show me. For about five minutes, based on one thud upon the gong he created a variety of sound variations – from crescendo to decrescendo; from one pitch to another; and from one vibration CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[ASTROLOGY BASICS 101]

SUN, ASCENDANT AND MOON by Kaye Berjot It’s hard to believe that it has been 20 years since I was first introduced to astrology. It has been a useful tool for me in my life and has allowed me to learn more and more about myself every day. Since your astrological chart is uniquely designed for you and is specific to your birth date, time and location of birth, it can be very helpful to know what you’re looking for. I believe it to be a useful tool for all of us and can be a great complement to any self-awareness practice that you might undertake on your road to self-discovery. Astrology consists of many different components, and there are different types of astrology such as Chinese, Vedic and Western. It’s important to note that planets, signs, houses, aspects and transits are the basic fundamentals of astrology, regardless of modality. Since our charts are made up of several aspects, knowing what to look for in 14

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

JANUARY 2018

your own chart can seem challenging. It is for this reason that we are kicking off a series of articles to help our readers understand the basics of Western Astrology. The goal is for you to be able to easily apply astrological principles into your own regimen. The only way that I know to explain the basics to you is by calling upon my experiences and using tips that my teachers have shared with me. I learned by first understanding the importance of the Sun, the Ascendant and the Moon. So I am beginning with those.

SUN SIGN

The sun sign is the sign that we are most familiar with, and oftentimes the sign that we read about in journals, magazines and blog posts. So when you get a new “app” on your phone or subscribe to a web feed, it’s usually to look up your sun sign. Sometimes the horoscope written for that sign will seem to apply to you, and sometimes it doesn’t seem to apply. There are reasons for that, and we will get to those later on within the article. Sun signs are divided based upon the solar transit, which occurs on a monthly basis. This transit occurs every 28-31 days. The glyph or symbol for the sun is a circle with a dot in it. This is useful to know if you are going to look up your own astrology chart. Your sun sign is your individuality. It is who you are and what you aspire to be. In essence, it is where we want our light to shine and is at the core of

our being. Therefore, we are continuously aspiring to stand in our own light because it is our own light that we identify with. The sun is the natural ruler of Leo. So if you have met any Leo personalities during your lifetime, you will know exactly what I’m referring to. They are big; they are beautiful; they are bright. They light up the environment for the entire world to see. So when you look at your sun sign recognize that it’s the light that you want everyone to see, and it’s what you are offering to yourself and to your environment.

THE ASCENDANT

An astrology chart is divided up into quadrants (four equally distributed parts). Each quadrant means something different. The bottom half of the chart represents the self on the earthly plane, and the top half represents the higher self. Each half has two quadrants.

best to know what tools you have prior to going out and acquiring the same tool repeatedly. So if you’ve got it, use it.

THE MOON

weighing all sides. The placement of your Moon sign can give you indications of how you express and protect your feelings. It’s very similar to having an intuitive autopilot that’s always with you and doing the best that it can to ensure your emotional safety.

SUMMARY

Every month we receive two wonderful opportunities to look at our moon, during the New Moon and the Full Moon. If you feel inspired or need to let go of energies, it usually takes place around this time. The glyph for the Moon is a crescent, and it represents your feelings, emotions and intuition. It rules the sign of Cancer and much like a crab (the symbol for Cancer) has a tough exterior to protect the most sensitive sides of us. Your Moon sign and placement represents how you deal with your emotions. An Aries moon might choose to forgo emotions by concentrating on moving forward while a Libra Moon may choose to balance out emotions by

When looking at your horoscope I suggest that you look at the horoscope for all three signs. The Sun sign will tell you what is occurring, the Ascendant will tell you how it is being presented, and the Moon sign will give you an indication of how you feel about what’s occurring. In the next article, we will discuss all 12 signs and how they work together in your chart. Each sign has a motto and serves to pass on a message to the next sign, so it’s good to know how they work individually as well as within a group. See you next month! Kaye Berjot is a transformational astrologer located in Little Rock, AR. If you would like guidance through a reading of your chart please contact her at kayeberjot@gmail.com.

You may also hear astrologers refer to the ascendant as the “rising sign.” The ascendant represents our natural reaction to events and can also be defined as the mask that we wear in public. It is usually the way that everyone sees us. Therefore, you might have a Leo sun sign, but everyone may see you as demonstrating characteristics of an Aries. You might even have a tendency to socialize with Aries individuals because it’s your “go-to sign”. In a nutshell, you identify with it and because you identify you attract. Why is it important to also look at your ascendant sign when reading horoscopes? I think it’s important because it is one of the tools that you have in your toolbox and represents your natural characteristics that come easily and effortlessly to you. In my opinion, it’s CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

[FROM THE HEART]

GET REAL by Alan Cohen

Sitting backstage at a network television studio in a large metropolitan city, I waited to go on the air for an interview. My segment was scheduled right after the noon news broadcast, which began with a gory account of a murder, then a rape, then war footage, followed by bad economic news, and a political scandal. I began to feel depressed, but consoled myself that the broadcast would get to more positive reports. It didn’t. The entire 15 minutes was filled with gloom and doom, nothing anyone in his right mind would want to get up in the morning and face. Eventually I just had to laugh. The news was beyond depressing. It was ridiculous. It was unbelievable. Finally, after the closing sortie of auto accidents and snarled traffic, the broadcaster announced, “. . .and now for a great new book by an author who is going to tell you how to live a happy life.” 20

| CONSCIOUS COMMUNITY MAGAZINE

JANUARY 2018

The camera turned to me. Suddenly I became Neo in the movie The Matrix, in which wizard Morpheus extends two open hands, a red pill in one palm and a blue pill in the other. If Neo ingests the red pill, he will awaken to his true self and the real world. If he takes the blue pill, he will remain in a familiar but oppressive world of illusions. I sat up straight and reached for the red pill. I told the audience that love is our birthright, and to fear the imposter.
I took a stand for living authentically in a world consumed
by illusions. I told the viewers that they deserved better than the world showed them, and they held power over their lives regardless of the insanity around them. It was the only news I knew how to broadcast.

After the program, the anchor, a highly respected lifetime journalist, took me aside and told me, “I agree with you completely. I get depressed coming to this job. There has to be more to life than the world we are telling people there is.” The reality we have been shown by the media and other seemingly authoritative institutions has been twisted into the polar opposite of truth, championed by people more committed to bondage than freedom. You have likely told someone about
a valued vision of yours, to which he or she responded, “Get real!” Suddenly your excitement was reduced to ashes and you either gave up your quest, or you had to once again build up the courage and momentum to forge ahead. Take care to share your sacred visions with people who will empower you, not attempt to gobble your hopes in the shredder of doubt. If you even have one or two good friends who understand you and believe in you, that is sufficient. If it seems that no one understands or supports you, Higher Power has your back. Even when you do not have faith in yourself, God has faith in you.

and call you to play small with them. Regard their resistance as a call for love, and an invitation for you to be authentic. When you stand for truth in the presence of illusion, you break the illusion for yourself and for everyone who subscribes to it. Your mission is to remain alive in a world preoccupied with death; to walk tall when others are compromising their integrity; to be who you are while others have forgotten who they are. Reality is not for sissies. To live authentically in a world steeped in illusion is the gift of a lifetime, spreading light in ripples from your own life to the lives of everyone you touch.

Alan Cohen is the author of many inspirational books, including I Had it All the Time: When Self-Improvement Gives Way to Ecstasy. For more information about this program, Hawaiian retreats, Alan’s books, free daily inspirational quotes, or his weekly radio show, visit: alancohen.com.

When most people say, “Get real,” they mean, “Get small. Get limited. Get stuck. I am trapped in my little fear-bound world, and your expansive vision is threatening to me. So I demand
that you grovel in the mud with me. How dare you rock my tiny world with greater possibilities!” The premise is that success and happiness are unattainable illusions, while struggle and suffering are realities we must adjust to and live with. Most planetary game-changers were told, “Get real.” They were branded insane, shamed, imprisoned, tortured, and killed. The Catholic Church sentenced Galileo to house arrest for suggesting that the earth revolved around the sun. Soon afterward Italian philosopher Giordano Bruno proposed that the sun was
a star, and that the universe contained an infinite number of inhabited worlds populated by other intelligent beings. Giordano was convicted of heresy and burned at the stake. When the judges issued his death decree he told them, “Perchance you who pronounce my sentence are in greater fear than I who receive it.” Jonathan Swift later noted, “When a true genius appears, you can know him by this sign: that all the dunces are in a confederacy against him.” Einstein echoed, “Great spirits have always encountered violent opposition from mediocre minds.” Every person is potentially great. Are you willing to step into your greatness, claim it, and live it? The holiday season offers you many opportunities to get real in the presence of people who fear to get real themselves, CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

TREAT MENOPAUSE NATURALLY WITH THE JAPANESE DIET by Sally J. Duffell All we hear about these days is how healthy the Japanese are and how they live longer than anyone else in the world. The women don’t get menopause symptoms, and they had never even heard of hot flashes until western researchers began asking about them. They have less cancer, osteoporosis, dementia and heart disease. So you look at the Japanese diet and find out it’s raw fish and lots of vegetables, and don’t forget the seaweed, the rice and the soya. No spuds, nothing processed. Feel miserable already? Rather have hot flashes followed by osteoporosis and an early death perhaps? Or is there a way we could literally have our (Japanese) cake and eat it, too. Yes!!! Besides the fish, seaweed and vegetables in their daily diets, the Japanese love sprouts. They sprinkle alfalfa on many of their dishes. Mung beans are a staple. Red adzuki beans are in their cakes. Sprouted foods are packed with other nutrients and interesting plant compounds, sometimes containing 90% more than the full-grown plant. Here’s the big thing; here in the West we never had hot flashes either before the industrial revolution. The word “menopause” was invented in 1821. What were we doing before then that was helping us? It was certainly not eating soy. Although if you look at the marketing, you would think that it was. Research tells us that soy contains plant hormones and it seems like there’s no other way you can get them.

In reality, over 300 foods contain plant hormones and most beans, peas and legumes contain high amounts. Once you know that, it’s easy to see that many Western traditional foods provided plant hormones. Many old-fashioned dishes, such as pease porridge or lentils and ham hocks, are rich in plant estrogen, but they have been largely forgotten. Yet, it’s easy to start adding portions of beans and peas to whatever else you are eating. Plus, there are lots of modern ways to get plant hormones into your diet. You might be eating them already from supplements that you buy at the pharmacy to help menopause symptoms or osteoporosis. If you look closely at them, many of them contain red clover, which has been used for generations for menopause symptoms, long before there were drugs and supplements. And here’s the exciting thing, you can sprout red clover on your windowsill in just a week without soil. All you have to do is water the seeds, and they will grow into little double-leaf plants that you can harvest. Red clover is not the only thing you can sprout on your windowsill. Mung beans are also packed with plant hormones and are even easier to grow, as you only get them to the root stage, which takes two to three days. You might think sprouting is a recent development, but not so, people have been sprouting in Europe for thousands of years. It’s been around since records began. You may have even grown mustard

and cress when you were a child. We have been sprouting it for centuries, and it’s always been known as a health food, curing everything from arthritis to scurvy. The Victorians called it their “Ginseng.” What they didn’t know was that it was full of both vitamin C (even more than lemons), plant hormones and cancer-fighting chemicals known as glucosinolates. Modern science is now showing us this, but sadly hardly anyone is growing it anymore. If you’re wondering why people haven’t thought of sprouting before, perhaps it’s because having a tray of beans and greens growing on the windowsill doesn’t fit into our fast-paced, ready-made world. However, it only takes a couple of minutes a day to water your sprouts, it’s easier than starting a vegetable garden or deciding to bake your own bread. It can be a little corner of your life that is all natural and all home grown – something you are doing for yourself and your own health. So, you don’t have to go on the Japanese diet to be healthy during menopause. We can look to our traditional diet, plus turn to modern ways of sprouting ancient foods and grow our own plant hormones the way nature intended. Sally J. Duffell has been growing, teaching and writing about bean sprouting for many years. She is the author of “Grow Your Own HRT: Sprout Hormone-Rich Greens In Only Two Minutes A Day.” See http://www.sallyholloway.com for more. CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

COSMIC DAILY WEATHER January 2018 by Tara Aal

Overview Welcome to January 2018! I want to share my gratitude for the opportunity to join the Conscious Community Magazine family. I am honored to receive the baton from Kaye Berjot, to keep this journey going. Thank you all for keeping astrology alive and growing and for making room for the new. Astrology is like a map of your personal wiring and energy. It also reminds you of your deepest desires and intentions for growth. It’s an amazing tool to bring about awareness, raise consciousness, and increase empathy and compassion. Check your natal chart out at www.astro.com. The Moon takes about 28 days to complete her orbit through the twelve signs, spending approximately two and a half days in each sign. When we say the Moon is void-of-course, (or VoC), it means the Moon makes no more major aspects to other planets until it leaves the sign it’s in. We sometimes say the Moon is floating between signs during these times, and it creates a sense of timelessness. You can embrace these events by slowing down and tuning into your inner guidance. It’s not the best time to start new things, but it’s a perfect opportunity to make room for what’s to come. If you want to know more, check out www.moontracks.com. This month starts with a Full Moon in Cancer and closes with a Full Moon in Leo, with a New Moon in Capricorn in between. Uranus goes direct, encouraging us to move forward with innovation, progression, and liberation to free ourselves from old, outdated patterns and positions that no longer serve us. We will experience the first of three exact Jupiter sextile Pluto aspects. We can all be excited about new possibilities for increased power, personal and spiritual growth, and success through positive change over the next nine months.

JANUARY 2018

Monday, January 1 Celebrate your accomplishments under the Full Cancer Moon tonight. Full moons bring illumination and awareness. In Cancer, you might find your emotions and reactions heightened. Pay attention to how you feel without attaching too much story to it – let your feelings help you tap into what you truly need to feel supported. Gemini Moon VoC until 2:10 AM when the Moon enters Cancer.

Tuesday, January 2 Uranus stations direct. With the Sun in Capricorn and Moon in Cancer, safety and security can drive the show, but Uranus always wants to push us further, to unfetter us. It’s a good day to visualize how you might show up in life more aligned with your true nature. How do you long to set yourself free? How can you start implementing that change with care and responsibility? Cancer Moon VoC begins 4:46 PM until tomorrow.

Wednesday, January 3 Leo loves the stage … well, when it’s not hiding in fear of embarrassment. Early this morning, Moon moved into the sign of the Lion. Wherever you find Leo in your chart, you need to creatively express yourself. Leo is ruled by the Sun and associated with the heart. The Leo in each of us wants to shine in its own natural way, and it wants to be seen! Some say love is the ultimate creative

expression. With what and with whom are you in love? How do you show it? What makes your heart sing? Cancer Moon VoC ends 1:22 AM when the Moon enters Leo.

Thursday, January 4 With Sun, Venus, Pluto, and Saturn in Capricorn and Jupiter and Mars in Scorpio, the desire to have and maintain control may be strong. The need for power and achievement looms over our heads, and if you’re not feeling successful or empowered, you could trip yourself up with attempts to prove something to yourself or others. Take the time to define what success and power really mean to you and set some new goals. Leo Moon VoC begins 5:10 PM until tomorrow.

Friday, January 5 The Moon in Virgo can manifest as an obsession with cleaning and organizing. You may find yourself tackling mundane duties. Virgo can be like a raw nerve ending, touchy when it comes to criticism or anything arousing the feeling of not getting things just right. With Moon trine Saturn today, take advantage of the drive to get things done, especially those boring tasks you may have put off, and don’t take anything too seriously … it will pass. Leo Moon VoC ends 2:12 AM when the Moon enters Virgo.

Saturday, January 6 Mars, representing our drive to assert ourselves, is conjunct Jupiter. Jupiter expands anything it touches, and with the Warrior, don’t be surprised if the needs to dominate, combat and individuate make themselves known. In the sign of Scorpio, harness this energy to transform your ability to act on your own behalf and pursue your authentic desire in healthy, healing ways. Virgo Moon VoC begins 8:50 PM until tomorrow.

Sunday, January 7 Today Moon moves into Libra, the sign of the peacemaker. With a great deal of intense energy at play right now, remember the beauty of grace and ease. Invoke the energy of the Libran moon to infuse yourself with newfound harmony and balance, and the ability to cooperate, and truly share with others. Virgo Moon VoC ends 6:14 AM when the Moon enters Libra.

Monday, January 8 With Moon in Libra square Sun and Venus in Capricorn, you may feel some tension

between impulses to not rock the boat, and the need for respect. Sun-Venus in Capricorn makes demands, sets limits, and has high expectations for relationships. Moon in Libra wants to play nice and not risk losing partnerships. Remember that giving up too much of yourself is never compromise or harmony – it’s sacrifice.

Tuesday, January 9 Moon-Uranus opposition can be unsettling – like feeling something is afoot without any idea what’s coming. Moon wants to feel emotionally connected and protected. Uranus is not concerned with feelings; it is liberation from the known. Moon represents what we know (in memory, bones, blood). Sometimes our fear of losing security prevents optimal growth. Be brave, and utilize this energy to unlock yourself from habits and patterns that have grown stagnant. Libra Moon VoC begins 10:12 AM until 2:05 PM when the Moon enters Scorpio.

Wednesday, January 10 Late tonight Mercury enters Capricorn and will conjunct Saturn. It’s time to make use of new insights and awareness you received while Mercury was in Sagittarius. Capricorn and its ruler, Saturn, are not satisfied with expanded consciousness and big ideas in their own right. Give your aspirations and ideas legs and stability, and set goals you can practically achieve.

Thursday, January 11 Moon in Scorpio is already intense, and today, it cozies up with Mars and Jupiter. If you have any desire to go deeper into your own psychological depths, to discover what you’ve been keeping in the dark, this is your day. Scorpio wants to get into the guts. With the energy of Mars, confidence, and truth-seeking of Jupiter, and Moon’s emotional longing to feel and transform in Scorpio, you may find yourself ready to enter the mystery. Scorpio Moon VoC begins 8:53 AM until tomorrow.

Friday, January 12 The Sagittarian Moon elevates and brings needed optimism. While the Archer does take her truth-seeking seriously, she loves to have fun and adventure. Try something new today – choosing to be in the unknown is the perfect prescription for letting life show up and surprise you. Scorpio Moon VoC ends 1:04 AM when the Moon enters Sagittarius.

Saturday, January 13 If the seriousness of life is weighing you down, you’re not alone. Collectively and individually this is a time to account for ourselves and what we’ve created. We are faced with big questions about where we are going and what is sustainable. Venus, Sun, Pluto, Mercury and Saturn are all in Capricorn. It’s a new year, and we need to realize we are in charge, with the responsibility to use our wisdom and the wisdom of our ancestors, to build something better.

Sunday, January 14 This afternoon Moon enters Capricorn, conjunct Saturn and Mercury. Emotional Moon wants to be taken care of and to know everything will be OK. In some ways, this is like our inner child and inner parent meeting up. The Moon is nurturing and allowing by nature. Capricorn and Saturn push us to make something of ourselves. Honor yourself as child and parent with the perfect room for flow and boundaries. Sagittarius Moon VoC begins 2:48 AM until 1:42 PM when the Moon enters Capricorn.

Monday, January 15 Today is the first exact Jupiter sextile Pluto aspect of 2018. Be open to opportunities, especially those facilitating your personal and spiritual growth. This combination of Pluto and Jupiter can be summarized as success through positive change and transformation.

Tuesday, January 16 Set forth your wishes tonight under the New Moon in Capricorn. Intentions involving all things Capricorn are extra supported at this time – career, authority, leadership, responsibility, success.…

Wednesday, January 17 With Moon in Aquarius, Venus entering Aquarius, and Sun square Uranus, look for themes of freedom achieved through emotional objectivity. Don’t take things too personally. Capricorn Moon VoC begins 00:30 AM until 2:32 AM when the Moon enters Aquarius.

Thursday, January 18 The Sun is ending its transit of Capricorn. Is there anything for which you still need to stand and account, even if simply to affirm that you are your own authority? CONSCIOUSCOMMUNITYMAGAZINE.COM

Sunday, January 21

Your need to belong and feel at home may conflict with your need to set forth in your own right and do what you want. Moon square Mars challenges your sensitive self to make room for courageous action and righteous anger. Aquarius Moon VoC begins 5:51 AM until 2:26 PM when the Moon enters Pisces.

We have a beautiful opportunity for healing today, with Moon conjunct Chiron in Pisces. Chiron represents our wounding that we believe is beyond repair. In courageously breaking open these “wounded” areas and loving them, you will find your Medicine. Pisces Moon VoC begins 7:12 PM until tomorrow.

Saturday, January 20

Monday, January 22

Emotional sensitivity will likely be heightened today with Moon Neptune conjunction in Pisces. Neptune represents our capacity for compassion and unconditional love, and to feel the joy and suffering of the world. This combination may trigger feelings of being taken over by greater forces, or facilitate increased faith and connection with something greater than yourself. Use this energy to reconnect with your dreams and imagination. Last night, Sun entered Aquarius, inspiring you to look at things in new ways.

With Moon in Aries, you may feel more active, apt to use physical energy to move your plans forward. Aries can be quick to take flight, but with Moon squaring Saturn you may feel stuck or confined at times. Use your vitality for what makes you happy, and pause at any barriers to make sure you’re aiming before you fire. Pisces Moon VoC ends 00:27 AM when the Moon enters Aries.

JANUARY 2018

Friday, January 26 Mars enters Sagittarius, challenging us to explore and seek our truth, blazing our own path of purpose. With Moon opposing Mars, you may wrestle with whether to go out or stay home, at least until the Moon enters Gemini. Taurus Moon VoC ends 11:39 AM when the Moon enters Gemini.

Saturday, January 27 With Moon in Gemini, we often find ourselves in conversation - in our own

heads, and with others. Gemini is not grounded, preferring never-ending exchange and variety. Add today’s MoonNeptune square, and distraction, confusion and escapism abound. Give yourself a dreamy assignment like creating a vision board.

Sunday, January 28 Moon, comfortable in its own sign, likes to be well-fed, at home and cared for. Expect sensitive feelings, and with Cancer’s drive for emotional satiation, you might find yourself finishing that pint of ice cream or bottle of wine. Gemini Moon VoC begins 4:39 AM until 12:57 PM when the Moon enters Cancer.

Monday, January 29 Tonight, with the Moon-Pluto opposition, pay attention to your needs and how you expect to have them met. Owning your immaturity is a sign of maturity. Use the opposition to see and feel with more objectivity, so your emotions don’t carry you away like wild horses.

Tuesday, January 30 Energy, drive and emotions are wellmatched with Moon trine Mars. You might be surprised at the positive results from acting on your feelings and intuition today. Cancer Moon VoC begins 10:40 AM until 12:53 PM when the Moon enters Leo.

Wednesday, January 31 January goes out with a flash of lights - Full Moon Total Lunar Eclipse in Leo steals the show! Eclipses reveal, offering growth opportunities in the dance of light and shadow. Earth’s shadow briefly covering the Moon represents a moment of experiencing our personal shadow without light from the Sun. By temporarily blocking the light, we feel instinctually with moments of clarity when the light returns. Be open to new awareness that resonates with your heart. Embrace your shadow for it holds your light.

ANTIOXIDANTS YEAR ROUND Cooking with Beets and Pomegranates by Janae Jean Snow…sub-zero wind chills…icy patches …we are in the midst of winter now in the Midwest. Not much grows in our gardens this time of year, but that does not mean there are not fresh fruit and vegetables in season. Beets and other root vegetables are the freshest choices throughout the winter. Pomegranate season in the Northern Hemisphere is September to February. Beets and pomegranates are the inspiration for both of this month’s recipes. White (light green) cabbage adds fiber to both dishes and is ready for harvest from November all the way until March. Both of these recipes comply with a whole foods, plant-based diet. See this month’s interview and podcast with Michael Greger, M.D. to learn more about how a healthful diet can improve and extend your life.

BEETS Beets are high in antioxidants and unlike many other vegetables; they do not lose antioxidant power through cooking. Additionally, they are high in dietary nitrates, which may increase blood flow. This is great for both athletes and those with circulation issues. Moreover, beets bind with bile-acids in the colon and remove them, preventing premature degenerative diseases. Beets are not recommended for those with a predisposition to oxalate kidney stones, as they promote their formation. However for most people beets are completely safe.

POMEGRANATES Pomegranates are a brilliant red fruit with a tart flavor. They are a great winter choice as their flavor improves with several months of storage (preferably in a cold, dark place.) They make an unexpected addition to salads, soups and entrées. To separate the tasty seeds or arils from the white rind, first cut the fruit in half and then submerge it in cold water. The arils will sink to the bottom and the white rind will float to the top. Although many of the health claims about pomegranates have been exaggerated, they are still a healthful addition to the diet. They contain 48% of the recommended

daily amount of vitamin C and 58% of the recommended daily amount of vitamin K.

RAW BEET-POMEGRANATE SALAD WITH POMEGRANATE DRESSING 1 beet, julienned ½ head of white cabbage, shredded 2 apples, cut into ¼ inch pieces 1 carrot, grated The arils of one pomegranate

/3 cup (approximately) pomegranate syrup* 1 tbsp. apple cider vinegar 2 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil Freshly ground salt and pepper to taste 1

POMEGRANATE BORSCHT Borscht originated in Ukraine and is a staple recipe across Eastern and Northern Europe. Most borscht recipes begin with a meat stock, beef or pork, but a hearty mushroom stock is common for vegetarian versions. Typically every family will have their own recipe, so have fun with it! I added pomegranate juice to mine because the tartness of pomegranate compliments the sweetness of beets so well. 64 oz. beef or mushroom stock 2 pounds beets, julienned 1 whole white onion, caramelized 1 tsp. garlic, minced 1 tbsp. butter or butter substitute 1 ½ cup carrots, julienned ½ head of white cabbage, shredded 1 tsp. paprika Salt and pepper to taste 1 cup pomegranate juice 1 tbsp. dried parsley (or 1 tsp. fresh) Sour cream, vegan sour cream or whole milk Greek yogurt (optional) Fresh dill sprigs (optional) Prepare all the vegetables as indicated. Caramelize the onions. Add the garlic and butter (or butter substitute) with the onions at the end of the caramelization process to sauté. Bring stock to a simmer and stir in pomegranate juice. Add all the vegetables, paprika, and salt and pepper. Keep at a simmer until the carrots are soft (about 30 minutes.) Serve in bowls with a dollop of

Prepare all raw vegetables and fruits as specified. Toss together in large bowl. Mix together pomegranate syrup, apple cider vinegar, olive oil, and salt and pepper in small bowl. Pour onto salad and toss. Serve immediately. *To prepare pomegranate syrup, boil down one cup of 100% pomegranate juice. Make sure to use low heat and not to burn the syrup. It takes about 20 minutes to boil down one cup to about one-third of a cup of syrup.
