The Northwest Passage速 Making Adventure Dreams a Reality Since 1984

2012 - 2014

Adventure Journal

Welcome

Greetings to old friends and new adventurers,

Milos, Greece “Undeniably, irrevocably, irretrievably, definitely, certainly, quite the best kayak trip I’ve ever been on -- just like the other Northwest Passage trips.” – Michael W. 2010

Before looking ahead to 2012, I would like to look back to the ‘golden age’ of polar exploration, a remarkable time when the farthest ends of the earth were finally reached. One hundred years ago, two great explorers raced to discover the South Pole. Roald Amundsen, a dedicated Norwegian polar explorer, was the first to reach the South Pole, arriving on December 14, 1911. Five weeks later Robert Falcon Scott would arrive, only to realize his defeat. Inspired by the perseverance of both expeditions, we are proud to commemorate the heroic efforts of these explorers by guiding various expeditions to arrive at the South Pole on the centennial dates. As our expeditions progress along these historic routes across Antarctica, friends and family can be part of the adventure through the PolarExplorers blog, nominated as Best Ski Blog in 2011. During this coming year we will build on the accomplishments that marked the 2011 season. In the past year, PolarExplorers hosted the first known poetry slam at the North Pole, featuring original work by an award-winning poet, and followed in the footsteps, or rather ski tracks, of the great Norwegian explorer, Fridtjof Nansen, on a remarkable trans-Greenlandic ski expedition. In the Mediterranean, we explored the beautiful coastline of Mykonos, continuing our quest to circumnavigate each of the Cyclades Islands by kayak. Back in the states we continued to put more people on the water than anyone else in Chicago kayaking history, introducing more than 2,000 Chicagoans of all ages to paddling on Lake Michigan, the Skokie Lagoons and other beautiful local waterways. Looking ahead, 2012 promises to be another adventure filled season. While we’ve formulated new adventures throughout Greece, Central America and Italy, we are excited to return to the Galapagos, North Pole and, as always, the Mediterranean lifestyle. Join us for a “Double Dip”, stacking two Greek adventures one after another. Seize the opportunity to massage your soul and set your watch firmly to “island time”. In 2011 we once again donated to the depressed Russian mining community of Barentsburg on Svalbard, from whence we launch our North Pole expeditions. Also, amidst the tumultuous tourism of Santorini, just three miles across the Caldera, we have discovered a traditional community all but forgotten in time. Here we have struck a harmonious cooperation, and have given freely to support the church and community. Prospering with purpose is our calling in adventure for 2012. I believe that there is a passionate explorer within each of us. Join us for the adventure of a lifetime. Encounter the natural world on its own terms; reawaken the inner explorer. A tourist merely glances and nibbles; an adventurer experiences and discovers the truly sublime. Let us make your adventure dreams a reality today! Rick Sweitzer Director

Family Adventures

Nothing tops the experience of cresting a wave, climbing a mountain, completing a portage or encountering new cultures and remote wilderness – except the joy of sharing that experience with your family. I know. In 1993, I led the first group of mushers and skiers to the North Pole. It was a perfect expedition highlighted by a perfect ending: my family joined me at the Pole on the pick-up. It was one of the finer moments of my life. - Rick Sweitzer Today The Northwest Passage offers that same adventure opportunity for your family, all ages and skill levels. Do not just take it from us - here is what other families like yourself have to say. ”This is definitely one of my most enjoyable vacations. It was a challenge for me personally, and I think my 3 kids to complete the kayak trip (we are all beginners). I felt so good that we were all able to complete the trip. The guides were so patient and nice to us as we were learning. The whole experience was great being with family for a week without TV, cell phones. It was definitely one of our better vacations and we will be visiting the website and planning another trip in the future.” - H Olson, Apostle Islands 2008 We invite you to make your family adventure dreams a reality.

Join us as we explore the overlooked islands of the Cyclades! On this adventure we will circumnavigate Ios and Sikinos, sister islands off the coast of Santorini. Ios has what every Greek island should: unspoiled beaches, turquoise waters, ancient ruins and, of course, great nightlife. With only one village on the island, Chora, Ios became famous during the 70’s for the fantastic parties held on the village beaches, which has since become island tradition. There truly is something for everyone on this tiny island, and as we circumnavigate the coast of Ios, you will discover an island rich with secluded beaches and rocky formations - perfect for cliff jumping or simply a fresh view of the landscape.

New!

Kos is renowned for its impeccable beaches, calm water, ideal weather, locally made wine and exquisite food - as the birthplace of Hippocrates, the famed father of medicine, we say it’s just what the doctor ordered. Located in the southwestern Aegean Sea, just three nautical miles off the coast of Turkey, Kos was long a bustling port in the trade routes between Asia and northern Africa. By day we will explore the natural beauty of this island, with its golden sandy beaches and mountainous landscape from the unique vantage point of our kayaks, but as evening falls we will return to land and enjoy Kos’s celebrated cuisine, wine and nightlife.

Naxos-Schinoussa-Keros-Koufonisi, Greece

Ryan Allen Guide

Cyclade’s Circumnavigation

For those that are in need of a healthy dose of adventure, this is the trip for you. Beginning on Naxos, one of our favorite haunts, we will head south along the coast to a cluster of small Cyclades islands, circumnavigating four of them before returning to Naxos. As we glide through the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, we will discover the beauty held within the remote islands of the Cyclades. Wild landscape, clear waters, isolated beaches and traditional villages will surely make this an experience unlike any other The Northwest Passage adventure seen. With waters as tranquil as the culture, we will have time to enjoy the remote beaches and hike inland and explore the landscape. When was the last time you experienced a place so perfectly calm and unhurried by the world around it? We’ve been all over, so we know how rare places such as these are...

Just off the west coast of Italy, surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea, you will find our next adventure: Sardinia. We can no longer resist kayaking in Atlantis - or so some call Santorini, one of the most dramatically beautiful of the Greek islands. Dazzling sunsets and unique wines make Santorini a splendid new addition to our roster of indulgent adventures.

Greece On this unique journey we begin our adventure on Crete and then travel by ferry to Gavdos, the fabled magical isle of Calypso, located just 25 miles across the Libyan Sea. Keep an eye out for dolphins on the way to this remote, unspoiled paradise! The island of Gavdos is the southernmost point of Europe - the next landfall is Africa, which we can just see from the high southern cliffs of Gavdos. Depending on weather conditions, we will circumnavigate Gavdos, and may even venture over to its tiny neighbor, Gavdopoula.

Mysterious Milos is a mesmerizing volcanic island located south of mainland Greece. While renowned as the location of the discovery of the Venus de Milo, Milos and its sister island of Kimilos are equally celebrated for their exceptional local cuisine, soothing underseas hot springs, and magnificent rock formations. These awe-inspiring seascapes combined with the charm of traditional whitewashed villages will leave you feeling like you stepped back in time as we paddle with seals, dolphins and sea turtles on what may be our best kayak adventure yet!

Kilimanjaro Trekking & Wildlife Safari is a beautiful and rewarding experience in every way. Our seven day trek up the Western Breach Route is considered one of the most scenic and rugged routes and provides the greatest opportunity for summit success. Not only does it offer you a high camp amidst towering glaciers, but you will also experience a uniquely intimate view of the mountain. Kilimanjaro is the highest peak on the African continent and the tallest free-standing volcano on earth (19,340 feet). At the end of the dry season huge numbers of animals flock into the Tarangire National Park, a spectacular park with a forest of Baobab trees, open grasslands, Acacia forest, swamps and lakes. It also has the largest number of elephants in Africa. Here we will stay at a tented camp which is set on a bluff overlooking the river.

Mount Everest Expedition

After countless days skiing across frozen, unforgiving Antarctic, Roald Amundsen becomes the first man to reach the South Pole. Following one of the most storied ascents in mountaineering history, Sir Edmund Hillary, after the mountain had beaten many more extensively funded and outfitted teams, sinks his crampons into the summit of Mount Everest. What incredible accomplishments these are. What great adventure stories Amundsen and Hillary must have shared with their families upon their return.

Renowned for its soaring mountains, glaciers, alpine valleys and polar bears, Spitsbergen is an adventurer’s paradise. In recent years, it has also become a staging area for North Pole expeditions, including our own. Join us as we embark on a kayak camping journey through this arctic playground. The area we’ll be traveling through is a protected wildlife refuge, home to polar bears, Spitsbergen reindeer, arctic fox and, along the coast, various sea mammals; walrus, ring seal, bearded seal, Greenland seal, hooded seal, white-nosed dolphin, narwhal and killer whales. Spitsbergen boasts the high Arctic’s greatest variation in nature and fauna, more than Arctic Canada, Siberia and Greenland.

Adventure stories are great. Adventures are even better. But adventures with your family are simply unbeatable. Don’t just share stories with your family. Share the whole experience! The 7 + 3 series refers to 10 of the greatest and most rewarding outdoor challenges on earth. The 7 is for the vertical challenge climbing the tallest peak on each continent. The 3 is for the horizontal challenge of skiing to the North Pole, South Pole and across Greenland, the world’s largest island and ice cap. Nothing builds or enhances tight-knit bonds like sharing the preparation, execution and successful completion of an unforgettable expedition. We know from experience. The joys of a shared family effort always overshadow the accomplishment of a successful expedition. With over 25 years of designing and guiding family trips, over 40 expeditions to the poles and our experience organizing expeditions all over the world, no one is better prepared to create a world class adventure for you and your family. Kids grow up faster than you think. Give them the lifelong memories of skiing together across Greenland, having hot drinks in the tent before pushing on for the North or South Pole or share sublime moments atop the world on Everest. Don’t delay planning your upcoming family adventures. The South Pole season runs from December to January, and North Pole trips get underway in April. Cross Greenland on skis, with options for dogsled and kite travel, in June, or climb Kilimanjaro in August. Or you can take on the tallest order the world has to offer, and climb Everest with us in 2012. Don’t put off booking the ultimate family adventure!
