GooD tidings to all... well it is 60 days to the big day and almost time to crack open the Advocaat (yum!?) If, like me, you suffer with freezing tootsies (mine are courtesy of the cursed Raynauds condition) then I urge you take a glance at the article on page 6. As soon as this magazine is safely with the printer, I’ll be googling the AccuLux foot warming mat – a heaven sent gadget for those with blue extremities. I’ve heard it mention that Santa is going to be busy round these parts in the run up to the 25th, and he’s going to need elasticated trousers by the sound of it – in the magazine you can see details of the various venues where you can have breakfast with the big fella, lunch with him and afternoon tea! Lovely!!

Cool Gadgets Keeping you warm this winter

If you and your family are pondering on fostering a child, Orange Grove Fostercare are holding an informal Coffee Morning on the 25 November 10am-12noon at Toast, 149 Dentons Green Lane, to provide information and advice to those who would like to hear more about it. on page 22 you can read all about.... the Preston By-Pass, yes, really. When I first saw the article I thought, well that will be useful to those readers who suffer with insomnia, but surprisingly, it is actually an interesting read.

12 Cold Enough for Snow

I’d like to say a massive thank you to all my regular advertisers, some of these businesses have been gracing these pages for over 6/7 years. I’d also like to say a very warm welcome to a lovely group of new advertisers this month. All the businesses are listed in the index at the back, so if you need a tradesman, somewhere to eat, a visit to see Santa, your feet mended or one of the other many businesses featured then check the index and give them a call - they’ll be delighted to hear from you.

33 Just Add Water...

An early Happy Christmas to you all, and while I’m at it – wishing you all a Happy New Year! Now then, where’s my laptop, credit card, and bottle opener. P.S. Doesn’t the picture on the front make you want to superglue the dentures and chuck a load of sugar in a pan.

Dogs Trust is the UK’s largest dog welfare charity and cares for over 16,000 stray and abandoned dogs each year through its network of 18 Rehoming Centres across the UK.

Hope is a sweet, shy Lurcher, who loves affection and enjoys nothing more than cuddles with her carers. RAINFoRD SCHooLS uPDATE

Brook Lodge Community Primary How time flies... As the mornings and evenings get darker and we see the leaves falling from the trees we can see that the last chances of an extension to summer are fading by, and it is at this point that we realise how quickly time is moving. It seems like only yesterday that the children started back at school and we are already discussing and organising Christmas Fair (november 29th, 3.45pm), Carol Concert (december 16th, 1.30pm at Rainford Parish Church) and Infant nativity! Time flies when you are having fun!

Focus week Already we have started the year with a bang as our Focus Week in school looked at the major religions around the world. Every class looked at a religion taking in its prophets, founders, beliefs and practices. This culminated in a display for each religion in the school hall which look amazing! Well done to all the children and staff.

Safety workshops We were also delighted to welcome in Mr Cope of PowerWise for workshops involving all the children around electricity safety. The interactive and informative sessions were absolutely fantastic and enjoyed by all the children and staff.

School Forum our School Forum already have a long list of jobs to do as they work with me to improve the school even more. This includes the setting up of a new Healthy Snack Tuck Shop named Fruit-to-Suit – this project will be starting November 4th in school and we hope to premier our goods at the Rainford Firework event on Saturday 2nd November. They are also busily preparing our Halloween Disco and Christmas Fair, whilst also getting involved with our other Primary schools in setting up a Rainford Schools’ Council – thanks to Corpus Christi for hosting our children.

Global partnership Miss Kime, our Year 4 teacher, has also enjoyed a truly memorable visit to South Africa and our partner school Esikhisini Primary. Here she has furthered our link with the children and staff and we look forward to our Year 4 and Year 5 classes corresponding with Grades 2 and 3 over the course of this year – global learning!

Old traditions and new skills In addition, Year 5 provided an excellent Harvest Assembly in September, Years 1 and 6 were honoured to be included at the Harvest Service in church with Rainford CE, Year 6 have just started Tri-Golf (a new sport for us at Brook Lodge), all children enjoyed polishing their art skills for the Village Art Exhibition, the list goes on!! A super start to what we know will continue to be a super year at Brook Lodge. If you are considering school places for your child this January, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with our School Office on 01744 678816 to arrange a visit.

Just add water... JASOn BLAkEmORE Supervisor Ruskin Health & Fitness

When you swim, there’s no need to think whether you’ll be increasing your fitness, building endurance, toning up or building strength because you’ll be doing it all. Swimming uses muscles in your core, upper and lower body; an all in one workout that benefits all parts of life including physical and well-being.

Mind as well as body If you want an exercise that makes you feel good on the inside as well as looking good on the outside then swimming is what you need. With no electronic gadgets you can take yourself away from everyday distractions and focus time on yourself. Swimming, even for pleasure, will leave you feeling positive and if you swim harder, your body will release endorphins that trigger positive feelings. Instant Weight Loss When you get into the pool the weight of gravity is taken off and the upward force of the water makes you feel lighter. But if you want the weight loss to be real then you’ll need to do a bit more work than just get in the water. Here’s a quick summary of the calories you’ll burn swimming for 30 minutes*: Breaststroke: 367 | Front crawl (slow): 257 | Front crawl (fast): 404 More with Less

A swim will give you an aerobic workout that puts less pressure on your joints than impact bearing exercises making it ideal if you’re pregnant, suffering from arthritis or carrying a little more weight than would like to. There are many health conditions where swimming will help hugely and, due to the warm moist air, swimming is the best form of exercise for people with asthma (in fact, Rebecca Adlington has exercise induced asthma!)

Plateau Buster Treadmill tedium can set in if you’ve been hitting the gym three times a week for a year and you don’t feel you’re getting anywhere. But don’t think about quitting - introduce swimming to your gymming. If the thought of going to the gym after work induces feelings of dread, switch your session to the pool; enjoy a swim, steam or sauna and feel leaving relaxed. So, get out of the gym and swim! At Ruskin Health and Fitness we have just refurbished our pool area. If you want a free trial in our 20M pool just give us a call and we can fix one up for you. * Source: Swimming.org

Grace of Monaco TBC Director: olivier Dahan Starring:

Synopsis: Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson star in the funny and heart-warming true story behind Disney's 'Mary Poppins'. Movie titan Walt Disney (Tom Hanks) promises his children that he will make a film version of their favourite book. But he overlooks one crucial factor - the wishes of the author! The book is 'Mary Poppins' and its author is prim Englishwoman P.L. Travers (Emma Thompson). Walt whisks to her to Los Angeles for a full charm offensive aimed at securing the movie rights. But the prickly Travers pronounces herself singularly unimpressed by his "silly cartoons" and accuses him of misunderstanding her very personal novel. He quickly realises that if he's ever to get his film made, he will have to learn a great deal more about the author's background. From John Lee Hancock, writer and director of the oscar-winning 'The Blind Side', this is the little-known true story of the making of a timeless classic.

Nicole Kidman, Tim Roth and André Penvern

Synopsis: The story of oscar-winning actressturned-princess Grace Kelly's (Nicole Kidman), crisis of marriage and identity, during a political dispute between Monaco's Prince Rainier III (Tim Roth) and France's Charles De Gaulle. It all takes place from December 1961 to November 1962, Kelly played a major role in helping Rainier settle a dispute against France over tax laws in the 1960s - and a looming French invasion of Monaco.
