Goodwood / Parow / Brackenfell Larry’s kindergarten class was on a field trip to their local police station where they saw pictures tacked to a bulletin board of the 10 most wanted criminals. One of the youngsters pointed to a picture and asked if it really was the photo of a wanted person. “Yes” said the policeman. “The detectives want very badly to capture him.” Larry asked, “Why didn’t you keep him when you took his picture?”

From the Editor

Winter has officially arrived and oh boy, it is cold! With winter here, we are faced with a whole bunch of sick kiddies! My daughter and son finished their first batch of antibiotics 4 weeks ago and believe it or not . . . we are back where we started! I have been giving my kids their vitamins religiously every day with the other medicines they have to take on a daily basis, what more can I do?? It sometimes feels that I see my paediatrician more than I see my own husband. Every morning when I open my facebook, I see my friends not commenting on the day’s events but on what’s wrong with their little ones. I do have to say though, even with sick children, I am still blessed that they are healthy in the sense that they do not have life threatening diseases. Our prayers go out to all the parents in situations like that. To the paediatricians, doctors, nurses, clinic sisters – thank you for helping us with our children and finding ways to ease the pain! Have a look at the give-away & discounts that some of our advertisers are offering on page 11 on the My Choices side. Thank you for the huge response from moms & dads from our facebook page, helping us to find a front cover for this edition. I received the most beautiful photographs to choose from!!

I would like to dedicate this edition to my dear friends Helga & Juan - congratulations on the birth of your beautiful, healthy, baby boy Aiden xxx To all the expectant parents, may you too be blessed. Enjoy your pregnancy, stay healthy and look forward to this little gift of God.

Until next time, Kidz/s regards

A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, “Everyone who thinks they’re stupid, stand up!” After a few seconds, Little Larry stood up. The teacher said, “Do you think you’re stupid, Larry?” “No, ma’am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!”

Why Schools Should Enforce Hand Washing

3 months – 6 years 021-976 2102

Do your child’s school and teachers encourage hand washing in students? If not, talk to them about doing so.

Goedemoed: Unique Playschool

1 – 5 years (Gr 0) 021-976 9350

Proper hand washing, especially during cold and flu season, is a simple and easy but vitally important step in guarding against illness. An estimated 80 percent of all infection may be transmitted through the hands, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. A study of school-age children in Denmark published last year in the American Journal of Infection Control found that mandatory hand washing reduces absences from infectious illness among school going children. Besides talking to your child’s teacher and school about instilling good hand washing habits in kids, you can do the following to protect your child against illness this winter: Teach your children how to wash their hands properly. n Help them learn other healthy hygiene habits to prevent illness. n Be sure your family’s diet includes powerful immune boosting foods. n Make sure they get plenty of rest and exercise. n

Eco-Educational Indoor Activities for Kids Sew Up Tattered Clothes Take some time to give the kids a sewing class and teach them how to make basic repairs like patching rips and replacing buttons. The activity is a fun time for the family, teaches the kids useful skills that they’ll be able to use the rest of their lives, and most importantly, shows them that it’s important to care for the things they already have and make them last as long as possible, rather than wastefully replacing items.

Blouberg / Table View Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV)

is a very common virus that leads to mild, cold-like symptoms in adults and older healthy children. It can be more serious in young babies, especially to those in certain high-risk groups. RSV is spread easily by physical contact. Touching, kissing, and shaking hands with an infected person. RSV can live for a half an hour or more on hands. The virus can also live for up to 5 hours on countertops and for several hours on used tissues. Risks include: • Attending day care • Being exposed to tobacco smoke • Having school-aged siblings • Living in crowded conditions

Little Larry attended a horse auction with his father. He watched as his father moved from horse to horse, running his hands up and down the horse’s legs. After a few minutes, Larry asked, “Dad, why are you doing that?” His father replied, “Because when I’m buying horses, I have to make sure that they are healthy and in good shape before I buy.” Larry, looking worried, said, “Dad, I think the Milkman wants to buy Mom ......” 10
