East Croydon Proposed improvements to public spaces and transport connections

Context Introduction John McAslan and Partners are leading a team of landscape architects, architects, engineers and consultation specialists in the development of the East Croydon Interchange project, in close collaboration with Croydon Council. The site area currently lacks the identity that such an important arrival and departure point deserves. The area is blighted by traffic, poor materials and furniture and offers a relatively poor pedestrian and arrival experience. Aims and Objectives We aim to create an exciting new ‘Gateway’ experience for everyone who passes through East Croydon Station, with improved connectivity, legibility and pedestrian permeability. Access between transport types will be improved, unnecessary street furniture removed, new public spaces created and better access provided into the Town Centre. Most importantly we aim to create the arrival experience and positive first impression that Croydon deserves at its primary transport hub and passenger interchange.

Your reply must reach us no later than 02 September 2013.

• Streets are dominated by traffic with a poor pedestrian experience. • Lack of connectivity between different transport types. • ‘Cluttered’ and cramped streetscape with random distribution of street furniture. • Poor wayfinding and difficult to negotiate pedestrian areas and crossing points.
