Move & Shake!

The Women of Little Black Book are movers and shakers. We are the women who run businesses, sit on boards, volunteer for community service, mentor students, serve in church communities, and more. So this month, we’re going to lean into moving and shaking, LBB style.

Let’s Go!

Being one of the “J” months, July is typically a slower month for many businesses. School's out. The weather is beautiful. People are saving for their vacations, or they're busy being away on those vacations. It’s the perfect time to engage in a new LBB activity. You’re invited to visit one of LBB’s chapters that is not your home chapter. Little Black Book has chapters in Wentzville, Cottleville, St Charles, Troy, Hannibal, Encore, Mid-St Louis County, and West County in Missouri; and Madison County in Illinois. Each chapter has its own unique feel and flow. Some chapters are run as a tight ship, others are more relaxed in their presentation. Fierce women are the name of the game. They would love to welcome you into their meeting. Check the calendar for a schedule of Coffee & Connections meetings. Each chapter hosts one. This could be the perfect time for you to opt into one of Little Black Book’s affinity groups. Participation is a free member benefit and I encourage you to check them out. LBB offers two book clubs: self development, and leisure. If you’re into reading, plan to attend one of the book club evening events. Moms on the Move is a thoughtful program designed to offer members the opportunity to connect and collaborate with caregivers, participate in family

focused events, and be empowered to develop youth into well rounded, community focused individuals. For the RUN of It is a social run/walk group providing LBB Members another opportunity to connect with others, share best practices, inspire others, and be empowered to achieve a fitness goal. The LBB Toastmasters group is dedicated to developing public speaking skills and leveling up presentations. All are open and available to you. Perhaps you’re up for a social event. Then attending the LBB: Encore LAFF activity may be for you. In July, Encore will be heading to FYSIQ at Mid Rivers Mall to take a bungee fitness class. Another social event planned for this month is “Christmas in July,” at the O’Fallon Hoots game for LBB’s BrrrBASH to benefit Toys for Tots. LBB and other community organizations will have the run of the VIP patio which comes with unlimited food and beverages. Each person who brings a toy to the game will be invited to toss it onto the field during the 7th inning stretch. How fun! All this moving and shaking can be exhausting. So, when you’re ready to relax, perhaps you should consider moving onto your back patio to enjoy some quiet time and this month’s specialty cocktail. ¤

• NORTHERN SPY by Flynn Berry

“If you love a mystery, then you’ll devour [Northern Spy].... I loved this thrill ride of a book.” (Reese Witherspoon “A chilling, gorgeously written tale…Berry keeps the tension almost unbearably high.” –The New York Times Book Review) The acclaimed author of Under the Harrow and A Double Life returns with her most riveting novel to date: the story of two sisters who become entangled with the IRA A producer at the BBC and mother to a new baby, Tessa is at work in Belfast one day when the news of another raid comes on the air. The IRA may have gone underground in the two decades since the Good Friday Agreement, but they never really went away, and lately bomb threats, security checkpoints, and helicopters floating ominously over the city have become features of everyday life. As the news reporter requests the public's help in locating those responsible for the robbery, security footage reveals Tessa's sister, Marian, pulling a black ski mask over her face. The police believe Marian has joined the IRA, but Tessa is convinced she must have been abducted or coerced; the sisters have always opposed the violence enacted in the name of uniting Ireland. And besides, Marian is vacationing on the north coast. Tessa just spoke to her yesterday. When the truth about Marian comes to light, Tessa is faced with impossible choices that will test the limits of her ideals, the bonds of her family, her notions of right and wrong, and her identity as a sister and a mother. Walking an increasingly perilous road, she wants nothing more than to protect the one person she loves more fiercely than her sister: her infant son, Finn. Riveting, atmospheric, and exquisitely written, Northern Spy is at once a heart-pounding story of the contemporary IRA and a moving portrait of sister- and motherhood, and of life in a deeply divided society.

• Sacred Rest: Recover Your Life, Renew Your Energy, Restore Your Sanity

by Saundra Dalton-Smith

How can you keep your energy, happiness, creativity, and relationships fresh and thriving in the midst of never-ending family demands, career pressures, and the stress of everyday life? In SACRED REST, Dr. Saundra Dalton-Smith, a board-certified internal medicine doctor, reveals why rest can no longer remain optional. Dr. Dalton-Smith shares seven types of rest she has found lacking in the lives of those she encounters in her clinical practice and research-physical, mental, spiritual, emotional, sensory, social, creative-and why a deficiency in any one of these types of rest can have unfavorable effects on your health, happiness, relationships, creativity, and productivity. SACRED REST combines the science of rest, the spirituality of rest, the gifts of rest, and the resulting fruit of rest. It shows rest as something sacred, valuable, and worthy of our respect. By combining scientific research with personal stories, spiritual insight, and practical next steps, SACRED REST gives the weary permission to embrace rest, set boundaries, and seek sanctuary without any guilt, shame, or fear.

Traveling with Your Tribe

As mommas, wives, entrepreneurs, and more, our lives are busy. Everyone’s schedule is full. There are always deadlines to meet, and needs to many that sometimes we put off what is good for us. We say, “I’ll take that trip when I have more time or when I lose some weight or when the kids are a little older.” We wait to embrace the things that feed our soul. But here’s the thing. Tomorrow isn’t always promised.

The answer...A Girls Getaway! Jenn Powell from O Magazine says, “Surround yourself with like-minded, goal setting, achieving women and you will thrive. Not only will it make you happier, but you will also have a tribe of women that HELP you achieve.” I’ve heard it said that behind every successful woman is a tribe. A tribe of women who support her, love her and push her to be her absolute best. A tribe of women who pick her up and puts her back on her feet when she’s gone off-course. A tribe of women who encourages her. Best of all, they stand beside her even when she’s at her absolute worst. A girl’s getaway is typically something that is pushed out of our minds because of LIFE. Because of obligations and people that count on us, we tend to push away the thought of traveling with a tribe of women and instead feel we should give our time to our family. But there comes a time when it’s good for you to break away from the normal routine and experience

something for yourself, with your tribe. Something new, something where you don’t have to take care of everyone else, just yourself! In writing this article, it reminded me of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants movie. The Traveling Pants represented the girl’s friendship and the powerful, positive influence it had on all four girl’s lives. The girls had different personalities, interests, worries, and family situations. Much like the makeup of LBB. But these pants kept them connected and supported each of them. All that being said, it brings me to LBB’s Escape to Mexico. The members of Little Black Book IS your tribe. We all have different personalities, interests, worries, and family situations. Although we don’t physically have a pair of pants to pass along, I think we have all seen it many times where fellow LBB members stand beside and support others in times of lows. The love and support within this group is immeasurable. No better time to travel together, show support for each other, laugh, enjoy a destination and to simply be together than now. It’s time to feed your soul! Reservations are open, so call to be added to this fabulous girl's getaway. By the way, Angel creates a program that helps to connect the travelers while in Cancun even more. Although you have plenty of free time, by attending the planned meetings, the trip becomes a write-off for you plus it’s a lot of fun and games. To sign up, call me or Rhonda and we will get you added! 636-561-2626. Or email ¤

Today I’d like to take a deep dive into intimacy and it’s critical role in different types of relationships. Let’s consider it from two different perspectives: intimacy with friends/family and intimacy within committed relationships.

What do I even mean by intimacy with friends/family? Intimacy is the act of developing an open and honest atmosphere by being authentic and vulnerable with anyone who has earned that privilege. Take a moment to think about your best friend or perhaps your closest sibling. How often do you talk? Are you able to talk about anything without the fear of being judged? These are aspects of intimacy and are at the heart of true connection. Intimacy and connection are developed by taking time to truly get to know someone. Let me throw a truth bomb at you that you need to listen to with your whole mind, body, and soul. Those who have hurt you or won’t accept the authentic you, are not your people and aren’t worth your time. As you learn to trust who you are and allow yourself to be real, you will be drawn to your people. Let’s look at intimacy from the other perspective. In a committed relationship, intimacy is everything we just talked about, with the added layer of sexual intimacy. I know, even writing it feels naughty, but I think it is important to talk about and understand. We were designed to have sexual desires and they are not bad or naughty; however, they do belong in committed relationships. I know the tendency these days is to have casual sexual relationships, but this

diminishes its significance with your partner. When used with healthy boundaries, sex is a good and healthy thing. It is a stress reliever, releases positive hormones, and most importantly, it draws you closer together, because it’s something that just the two of you share. Sex should be enjoyed regularly and never be used as a punishment. Sex is good for both of you and should be made a priority; however, if you are struggling with sexual intimacy, I strongly encourage you to reflect on the underlying causes and begin to address whatever is holding you back. Remember, we are talking about intimacy and open, honest communication is the foundation of intimacy. You can’t fix things that are never discussed. This might include discussing what you like and don’t like; sex needs to be an enjoyable experience for both of you. This week I am challenging you to try something a little crazy in your committed relationship. Make sexual intimacy a priority. I think you will discover that communication and intimacy in all areas of your relationship with your significant other will grow more open and natural. Intimacy in any relationship can be intimidating, but when you find your people, whether it be with friends, family, or a significant other, intimacy becomes something you look forward to sharing. Remember, start slow in any relationship and as trust builds so will intimacy. ¤

JourneySuccess T O

How I got to where I am today! Lately, I have sat back and pinched myself. Is this real life?... Am I an owner of a business?... AM I A CEO?! This journey has been a long road and I’ve only just begun my climb. I hope that you read this and it inspires you to chase your dreams. Amazing things happen when you align yourself in the right places, with the right people at the right time.

I’ve never been a very patient person. Time has never been a friend of mine. I always want things to happen yesterday. People kept telling me things will happen at the right time. Well, what the heck does that even mean? Is it 1 year, 2, or 10? That was always frightening to me. What if I put in all this time and fall flat on my face? Well, guess what? I did just that my first go round. I just knew in college, I would graduate and open my doors and they would come! That did not happen at all. I had never owned a business. I had never made a business plan. And I had never set up licensing. In 2015, I opened my first Essential Rejuvenation Spa. I was totally stoked and full of confidence that it would pan out the way it was planned in my head. I did not have social media, marketing, business cards, networking, clients, or any backup money. What the heck was I thinking? I was thinking, "I’m amazing and talented, so this will happen." Needless to say, in one year I closed those doors, but kept my LLC open because I knew I was not going to close this dream. In 2021 the dream resurfaced and I re-opened a failed business that is currently thriving. The road to this point has been nothing shy of hard work and determination.

The long climb

In 2015 I got my first medical esthetics job. I needed to supplement my business that was unfortunately not growing. I became a laser technician for a growing start-up company. My specialty was tattoo laser removal, to this day I could tell you more than you would ever want to know about that job, but it lit my soul on fire for medical esthetics. In 2017, I moved

to a new job within lasers, building a practice within a doctor's office. I took this practice that had no revenue to a full-grown, money-making practice. Unfortunately what I learned was, I was building someone else’s dream. For four years I made major amounts of money for this company, with no bonuses or raises. No marketing support or website. At times I would purchase products out of my pocket to make sure my clients were taken care of. The pandemic would be the push I needed to step out again and build my own. I did just that in April 2021!

You need support

I had visited LBB in the past, roughly in 2016. I liked it, but it wasn’t the right time. At the end of 2018, I went back to a meeting. In January 2019 I joined! In 3 years I’ve made connections, friendships, and mentors. The first woman to push me forward and get me out of my shell was Katie Malloy and to this day she never has given up on me. Next was the major push from Angel, totally pushing me out of my comfort zone, challenging me to the next level, and believing in me. It truly takes a tribe to boost your confidence and keep your drive alive on your hard days. Trust me within this organization there are many names I could write down here but unfortunately don’t have enough word space. Along with the support of the organization, I’m also lucky enough to have great friends, amazing mentors, and family to drive me forward. Don’t drive the train alone, ask for help and accept the hands that extend for you. In conclusion, I’ve only just begun, but this is my here and now. I plan to keep climbing, making mistakes, meeting wonderful people, and learning new tricks and trades along the way. I hope my journey is just the kickstart you need to start to pursue yours! ¤

Many people struggle to finish the task at hand. No matter how long they’ve been in the business, productivity seems to evade them regularly.

And this probably happens to you, too, even if you’re an experienced business owner. Your to-do list is long… but you can’t focus when you try to get down to work. You try to concentrate… but you can’t make any headway. You might have been doing something all day… but none of your tasks are finished. Simply put, you’ve been busy but not productive. Luckily, there are many methods to get out of the slump.

Little Black Book | Become Magazine | July 2022

When you have many obligations, you can easily get overwhelmed by the sheer number. As a result, you end up sitting idle and unable to do anything. Instead of tackling many things at once, choose the most important task. Hone in on it, and don’t let anything else distract you.

One of the main reasons affecting your productivity is a potential lack of sleep. Working while feeling sleepy is counterproductive, and the only way to combat it is through this: Get some sleep.

Intelligent planning teaches you how to boost productivity by enhancing your time management. Research suggests your working intervals shouldn’t last more than 1.5 hours. Rest periods should be distributed between, allowing you to recharge your batteries.

Another great way to increase productivity is to weed out distractions, such as chatting with your team members and surfing the web. To do so, turn off computer and smartphone notifications. You may still encounter some interruptions, but they won’t be caused by social media or other trifles.

Most productive days start by taking care of the most difficult task first. You’re at your best in the morning, which is the perfect time to address the biggest problem for the day. It’s during this period where your mental energy surges and you’re more likely to produce innovative ideas to solve tough challenges.

This might sound counterproductive, but you need to take breaks during your workday. Remember, you’re not a machine that can work non-stop and produce impressive results. To avoid mental exhaustion and productivity lapses, get up from the desk and stop working for a couple of minutes.

Everyone needs help, even the most skilled business owner. Delegating your assignments should be a staple of your workday, as it helps you save time and remain productive. Best of all, it allows you to focus on complex duties that can make or break your business. The easiest way to delegate duties is to assign them to trustworthy team members. ¤
