As the organization grows, it is obvious that our members are experiencing increased levels of influence within our community. Let’s work together to fill each member with the confidence and skills necessary to become a woman of influence. ¤

• AMERICAN DIRT

by Jeanine CumminsLydia Quixano Pérez lives in the Mexican city of Acapulco. She runs a bookstore. She has a son, Luca, the love of her life, and a wonderful husband who is a journalist. And while there are cracks beginning to show in Acapulco because of the drug cartels, her life is, by and large, fairly comfortable.

Even though she knows they’ll never sell, Lydia stocks some of her all-time favorite books in her store. And then one day a man enters the shop to browse and comes up to the register with a few books he would like to buy—two of them her favorites. Javier is erudite. He is charming. And, unbeknownst to Lydia, he is the jefe of the newest drug cartel that has gruesomely taken over the city. When Lydia’s husband’s tell-all profile of Javier is published, none of their lives will ever be the same. Forced to flee, Lydia and eight-year-old Luca soon find themselves miles and worlds away from their comfortable middleclass existence. Instantly transformed into migrants, Lydia and Luca ride la bestia—trains that make their way north toward the United States, which is the only place Javier’s reach doesn’t extend. As they join the countless people trying to reach el norte, Lydia soon sees that everyone is running from something. But what exactly are they running to?  American Dirt will leave readers utterly changed. It is a literary achievement filled with poignancy, drama, and humanity on every page. It is one of the most important books for our times.

I really don’t mind getting older, and I LOVE being “retired.” I have found that there is so much more freedom and so much less stress. I never have to find a babysitter, I don’t have to try to please a boss and I don’t have to leave my house when it snows. But being a little older and retired can also tend to separate me from my younger friends in several ways. Like knowing the latest apps: I thought TikTok had something to do with time management. And knowing the latest music: When we ride to Girls Gone Wine on the bus, I have no idea what the words are to the songs you are singing. I just smile or laugh a lot and move my mouth like I’m singing along, too. I could mention the names you like to call each other (with love, of course) but I’d have to use a lot of #%*#? symbols in order for it to be published in this magazine. The cool thing is that none of you ever make me feel separated. I was surprised to know that I was the oldest member of LBB. When I was first introduced to Little Black Book, I felt the acceptance and love that you all shared. I knew I wanted to spread that around to other women of my generation that could also benefit from being part of a group that just doesn’t discriminate against people who don’t know TikTok or the words to the latest songs. I wanted to bring in more “seasoned” women who could lead by the examples of their vast range of experiences and also learn from those “lightly seasoned” women who so generously honor us with their energy and perspectives.

I asked our founder, Angel Magasano, if she would consider a chapter for a group of women who had already achieved a certain level of success in their lives. Warning: Be careful when you ask Angel to create something new for LBB. She might like the idea and put you in charge of bringing that idea to fruition. And... that is how LBB-Encore was born. With the guidance and patience of LBB leadership, we held a focus group to gauge the level of demand for such a chapter. We started our “soft launch” on February 4, 2021, the enthusiasm and encouragement of so many LBB members has been enormous. So many of you have recommended your mothers or M-I-L’s, older friends, retired neighbors, or just got involved yourselves. We have in-person and Zoom meetings on the first Thursday of the month. Encore's official launch party is on May 6, 2021, we are holding weekly computer-side chats on Zoom, so we can get to know each other and introduce our plans to potential members of this chapter. The feedback has been phenomenal! I’m so excited for these new Encore members to experience the warmth and love that all of you have shown to me. Thank you women of LBB for your amazing support of this new chapter! ¤ Joan Williams

THE POWER OF A NOTE You can send a thank you so many ways nowadays; email communications, social messages, and handwritten notes. Reminding customers that you are appreciative of their business is one of the best ways to keep doing business. Trust me; you’ll be glad you did! If you take tahe extra time and effort to send a handwritten note, you may even get a customer for life or at least a brand-ambassador.

Thank You NOTES HELP CREATE PERSONAL CONNECTIONS

While many businesses send a thank-you email, sending a physical card will help you stand out from your competition. Taking time to handwrite your message demonstrates an extra level of care and includes a personal touch. Studies have shown that 38% of customers attribute a good customer experience to personalization, and a good customer experience is what will keep delighting your customers to continuing coming back to you. You will be 50% more likely to get the best possible kind of new business…word of mouth referrals.

MAKE IT PERSONAL

If you want to increase profitability, get personal! Be sure to include details specific to the recipient so they know that it is a personal message, not a generic one. Please – do not include any sales or promotions; the card should only contain messages of gratitude and thanks. In a highly digital touch world, getting a handwritten thank you note is very meaningful.

TIMING IS EVERYTHING

Do not allow too much time to pass from your interaction with your client to sending out your card. Send them as soon as possible. This way, the details from the interaction will be fresh in your mind as well as the recipients. Promptly sending a thank-you card also demonstrates to your clients that saying thank you is a priority for you.

THINK OUTSIDE OF THE BOX

A thank you note, may not have to look like a thank you note. It could also be a birthday card or anniversary card to your client. They will know you thought of them on a special occasion, and you don’t even have to say thank you, but still letting them know you appreciate them as clients.

Take five minutes out of your day to write a thank you note to your client. It will make you feel good and them too. If you don’t have time to write a thank-you note, this is the perfect task to give to a virtual assistant. ¤

DETAILS MATTER

When choosing a card, pay attention to details. Things such as paper type, paperweight, color, and card design all matter. Your card choice should be professional, but also show a little personality. A high-quality card will help you to stand out and your client will notice your attention to detail and your ability to follow-through.

MICROFIBER'S

Super Power

In my day job, I work for a company that makes cleaning chemistries for hospitals and pharmaceuticals around the world. I know the types of chemicals used and I know the various requirements of the governing bodies around the world regarding disclosures to the customer and the tolerable limits of the chemicals. Shockingly, even China has higher restrictions than the United States. While these chemicals serve their purpose cleaning in an operating room. None of them belong or are needed in our homes, so many of the chemicals found in household cleaning products are known carcinogens or endocrine disruptors. With the power of just water and microfiber, I have been able to rid my home of the harsh chemicals from these types of products; window cleaner, furniture polish, harsh bleach smells, and disinfectant wipes. Speaking of those disinfectant wipes, sure they seem quick and convenient, but have you ever taken the time to read the directions on the container? I never did before switching to a more natural approach, and I will tell you I was shocked! If you have not read the directions, chances are you are not using them properly. The most important step is the time you must allow the product

to remain wet on the surface so that it disinfectants this typically ranges from three to five minutes, which took quick out of the picture. If you are using them on a surface that comes into contact with food or even children, you are supposed to rinse thoroughly with water, there goes convenient right out the window! Lastly, wash your hands after use better yet you should wear gloves whenever using those wipes. Don’t forget you dispose of it in the trash, which goes into a landfill and hangs out for years emanating those chemicals into the land. Cleaning with microfiber and water decreases the time you are spending cleaning. You reduce the use of cleaning products which reduces exposure to toxic fumes and harmful chemicals. You are preserving the environment for future generations when you reduce paper towel use and landfill contributions. Cleaning with water and microfiber significantly reduces the use of costly cleaning products saving you money! For those times when you feel like you need a little more help cleaning than just microfiber and water look for products made with plants or enzymes that are found in nature. Be sure to check your household for these harmful chemicals and feel free to reach out to me for ways to reduce them! I love to help families remove harmful chemicals from their homes! ¤

Become

There are times in life that the things we want may appear to be out of our reach. We find ourselves looking for a way to improve our circumstances, but we fail to realize that the key to improving our circumstances is improving ourselves. The key to getting where we want to be in life is to become better. To help you think a little more indepth on that. What do you do when you are faced with the opportunity to grow? To change? To go to the next level? To see past the chaos? Do you shrink and sink, or do you stretch and rise?   Drawing from her personal journey, Precious Simone, Author of Confronting the Age-Old Question: Why Me, shares practical steps on how to accomplish something with your life and arrive at your full potential. She encourages, motivates, and empowers you to be a part of the process of improving yourself, doing whatever it takes, and gaining the courage to make progress towards becoming your best self. You owe it to yourself to make every day of your existence count. You owe it to yourself to keep trying. Your dreams deserve a chance. Are you willing to pay the price? Are you willing to do whatever it takes to evolve?

BETTER

During all the time that we have to experience life, we must be open to growth and change. To do that, we must (willingly or not) accept that we hold the keys that our Creator has blessed us with.   PRACTICAL STEPS + TIPS

1. You can’t change the condition you are in unless you change what is inside of you. Whatever our spiritual or religious beliefs are (in some cases we don’t have any) our Creator has given us the blessings of limited free will. So, we have the ability within us to begin this journey with the help of truly the greatest guide. 2. We must make a conscious decision to be better and be willing to put in the work.

4. We must be able to look in the mirror of our very “soul” and say, “I choose to become better.” 5. Choose a mantra of affirmation and commit it into your self-talk. One that I highly recommend is, “Life is the gift that God gives to us, what we do with that life is the gift we give to God! I have known worse, and I have known better... I choose better.” In addition, evolving has been going on from the beginning of time and we have the choice to be a willing advocate of changing for the better or just ride the flow and see what happens.   BEcome better it looks BEtter on you!! ¤

3. There is a fear that we must overcome; the fear of success! We all know how to fail and do worse because it is a real part of our life. Failure is not defeat unless we accept it that way. Precious Smith

SIT.. SIT ME. Growing up I attended to 5 different grade schools from Kindergarten through 5th grade. Do you know how hard it is to be the new girl? Who do you sit with to eat lunch? Play with at recess? Sit with on the bus? It was a struggle time and time again. Fortunately, my sister was only one year ahead of me in school. We had each other for some of our firsts. Other times were difficult. Don’t get me wrong, my mom did everything she could, but as a single mom, you make choices, tough choices…and it frequently it meant moving. I have never been a shy person, but when you’re in second grade and are starting in the 3 rd school, with a broken arm, broken teeth (my own fault, don’t ask me to ride a bike, jk, that parked car came out of nowhere), and no one wants to friend you, you start to get down. Again, my older sister did not let this go, she is and has always been my advocate! I don’t recall exactly when, but I do know shortly after I landed at my final school and was comfortable, that any new student would ALWAYS be welcomed to sit with me and my friends for lunch, play at recess, or talk to in between classes, and have

an open seat on the bus!! I still feel this way today. Any new lady that walks into the room WILL have an instant friend with no questions asked. Sit with me!! You can never have too many friends! While I do still run into this from time to time at different professional networking events, I can say, Little Black Book is an open door to all women regardless of where you are in life. To say “open door policy” is an understatement. LBB has a “come sit with me, play with me, LOVE LIFE WITH ME policy!! For this I am grateful. I still have an amazing group of women in my life outside of Little Black Book, however, the ladies I choose to spend my time networking with are truly my Tribe. I choose to learn, share and grow with them on the daily!! Thank you to all of you who have helped me over the past few years. I treasure every one of you now and always. ¤

Elley's Hope: A CAREGIVERS STORY

Who is Elley, you ask?

She was my mother, a wonderful, beautiful, amazing woman. Elley took me on a ride, a different journey than I thought my life was headed on. Twelve years ago, to be exact, my mom was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease. Had I known many things I know now, then life may have flowed a bit differently. By no means am I an expert on being a caregiver, but if my journey can help future and current caregivers, then I’d like to share my tips and tricks to guide you through the journey known as caregiving. I became, what seemed like overnight, my mom’s voice, advocate, and right-hand man. I was very scared in the beginning. Yes, I spent many years as a medical assistant at this point, but this was my mom and I wanted the absolute best care, answers and to be the best for her. Man, the pressure I put on myself as a caregiver as tough. It was extremely easy to take on the blame. The reason for that is because you may make a decision based off medical advice and consulting with others, but it could totally go all wrong. You will beat yourself up and wear yourself down. With those trial and errors, it led me to following my gut! Your gut tells you the truth, it never lies, and it is never usually based off emotion. I say that because your heart leads with emotion and your brain leads with education, but your gut leads with intuition!! Follow it, I promise you it will lead the way. Be their voice! No one will advocate better than you will. You know their in’s and out’s. You know when things are off, even before the professionals do, so always speak, and help them. Caregiver burnout is a real thing. Caregiver burnout is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. As a caregiver, you must make time for yourself. As guilty as you feel, you must take care of

you. You will not be good for them when you are not taking care of yourself. Do not do it alone. Find your tribe, your group, a family member, a friend just anyone to support you. You need people to lean on, give you advice and let you scream and cry because trust me you will!! Be their friend. When they start to lose who they are, they need you there to be happy and supportive. To help them make it through their day. Trust me that is the hard part and brace yourself. Learning to love those who forgot how to love us, is difficult, but needed. Remember to smile. Love yourself. Forgive yourself. Love them. Hold them. The journey is not forever, the moments you hoped would end, you will want back. The twelve-year journey was a ride. I could go on and on with advice, but this is my small version of how to survive and thrive.¤
