Katherine Hepurn said "If you have to support yourself, you had bloody well better find some way that is going to be interesting." For most of my professional career I have managed, developed, and built teams for organizations and managed their sales programs and drove revenue streams. Now I am blessed to take my past experiences and apply them to my position as the Executive Director of the Troy Chamber of Commerce. I pride myself on being an active member of my community and helping businesses find the resources they need to be successful. I find serving my community to be the most rewarding part of my job, and I am very thankful that I have the opportunity to have it be apart of my career. I really cannot imagine doing anything else. It takes continual education, growth, and development and I cant think of anything better. In my spare time, I love spending time with my family, including our two dogs (yep we are crazy). As a family we love sports, hiking, the occasional nerf gun war, and camping. I also like to volunteer for community groups and organizations, and I am thankful I have time to volunteer and give back. I am beyond lucky, and I look forward to the continual change and development that comes with life, and with my choice of careers!

Family LEISURE • ThebyWrong Tarryn Fisher

Have you ever been wrong about someone? Juno was wrong about Winnie Crouch. Before moving in with the Crouch family, Juno thought Winnie and her husband, Nigel, had the perfect marriage, the perfect son—the perfect life. Only now that she’s living in their beautiful house, she sees the cracks in the crumbling facade are too deep to ignore. Still, she isn’t one to judge. After her grim diagnosis, the retired therapist simply wants a place to live out the rest of her days in peace. But that peace is shattered the day Juno overhears a chilling conversation between Winnie and Nigel… She shouldn’t get involved. She really shouldn’t. But this could be her chance to make a few things right. Because if you thought Juno didn’t have a secret of her own, then you were wrong about her, too. From the wickedly dark mind of bestselling author Tarryn Fisher, The Wrong Family is a taut new thriller that’s riddled with twists in all the right places.

Busy Time of the Year When Less is More

Are you feeling the stress of the season with all the shopping, wrapping, baking, and extra preparations that need to be done for the impending holiday, not to mention all the holiday parties, cookie exchanges, and Christmas light displays that are begging to be seen? This is an amazing but demanding time of the year. I have a simple question for you.

Does it have to be that way? I have spent years feeling the constant pressure of trying to get as many fun things as possible into the four-ish weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas as I can, but last year I began to reflect on why. I was constantly tired, constantly stressed, and overwhelmed for what reason? I realized that I was projecting my idea of what my family needed to have a great holiday season. I felt we needed to do all the activities so my kids could have fun memories. Too often, we assume that our children need all these experiences and adventures to have a great time, but in reality, all they want is your time. In the broad scope of life, kids will remember the quality of moments and not the quantity of activities.

I'm a

LITTLE EXHAUSTED

just writing about it

This is a time of year that we also let our boundaries slip because we don’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings. It is ok to say no to things, even good things, even family things. You know your family's limits and when one more activity, one more family house to visit is just too much. Don’t spend another holiday season so busy you miss the simple joys of family. I encourage you to sit and look at your schedule and reflect on what really matters. How many light displays do you need to see? How many cookie exchanges do you need to attend? Your answer to those questions may look different than mine, and that is ok. What I want you to reflect upon is what is the purpose of all these activities? What do you hope your family gains from them? Doing less this season will help you find more quality time with your family, more energy for the activities you want to do, and more time to sit and enjoy what is going on around you. ¤

Marketing Your Business

12

for the

Holidays

The Holiday Season is upon us - you know that time of year - we deck the halls, hang the mistletoe, light the candles, sing, eat, be merry, and of course - shop! We are starting earlier each year, it seems. We are inundated with specials on clothes, toys, games, and services during this time of the year. With that is the convergence upon many small business owners to fulfill those hopes and dreams, which begs the question - I am a small business, how will all those shoppers know what I have to offer? My specials? My quality? My customer service? Time to become creative on the ways we promote our small business during the Holidays. As with everyday promotion, keep your name out there. • You want to have top of mind awareness at all times. • You want your business to be the business that is your target demographic Go-To. To get known and be recognized is how and why you spent your promotional dollars all throughout the year. Now comes the fun part, use some of your advertising dollars to focus on the holiday message you would like to send out. You want to reach out to your audience's senses, see, touch, hear, smell, taste. Videos can be a multi-sensory way to connect with customers. Start with recording your video. • Selfie videos are the easiest to do. Just flip the camera around and hit record. Start your pitch and be real. No phony baloney here. Tell them about you, your product, service, or whatever you’re trying to pitch. • Don’t forget the most important part. The CTA, also known as the Call To Action, Some examples are, “Check out my website for a special offer.” “Take a look at our FaceBook page for daily deals.” “Use promo code Pink Elephant for a 50% discount.” • Do some quick editing. If you’re using an iPhone, you can edit your video on iMovie. It’s a powerful editor that is super easy to use. If you have an Android phone, stop by the Apple store and get an iPhone. Just kidding, I have an Android, and there are several excellent Apps to edit your video. After that's done, upload to your social media or marketing platforms and let them do their magic.

You could also put out print ads or billboards you could rent to get your product and benefits information out to the masses, some specifically targeting zip codes. Remember, if you go with a professional company, they have graphic artists on staff to prepare your message for the Holidays. Of course, I would be remiss if I didn't mention the airwaves to touch your perfect customer base. Yes, that's right, radio. Radio is the theatre of the mind. It will describe your vision, what you have to offer, and you can discuss what their loved ones want. It is more personal because you have made a connection on a different level. You are more than a business; you are a neighbor, friend, and family member. They will hear your voice and think that because you are lovely, your products must be hand selected and be pleasing as well, all the while letting your current customers and future customers know that your items are the ones that would bring their loved one's joy. So with the holidays quickly approaching, plan and implement your Holiday Promotion Strategy. Don't know where to start? Peruse the LBB Directory first. Many within the LBB organization understand what you are looking for, and they will create a strategy for your Holiday Promotions, along with you, while you are focusing and running your business. All and all, it will be amazing when you determine how you want to touch your market. I would suggest using several different promotional mediums, including radio, digital platforms, and print. Encourage your audience to shop LOCAL and SMALL BUSINESS. Please remember, people don't like to be “Sold” too. So make it fun, inviting, and lovely. ¤ -PEACE, Shel

Small businesses are the heartbeat of every industry. The contribution to the countries revenue and the effect on employment is significant. Today, we have no shortage of unique, talented, and creative entrepreneurs. As an entrepreneur myself, I love everything this amazing life has to offer, but most of all, I love getting the opportunity to help another company look its best. We often get questions about client gifting and how that looks for a company. I’ll share with you how I can help answer questions like:

Is sending out gifts going to cost me a lot? What should go in our company gifts? When is the best time to send gifts?

The Art

of Small Business

Gifting

Having Second Thoughts About Gifting?

Hesitant about adding gifting to your company’s relationship marketing? Trust me when I say I understand. But think about it this way, clients don’t usually expect to receive a gift from you; they only want a good product and outstanding customer service. So when you do go above and beyond with gifting, you make a BIG impression. When corporate gifting is done right, the client experience is taken to the next level with thought and creativity!

Why Add Gifting?

I am sure many other companies do what you do, yet your clients have chosen to work with you. Maybe it was your connection at a networking event, or perhaps they loved your company’s brand. Clients are constantly bombarded with perfect product images, enticing blog posts, and seemingly perfect people. But once the smoke clears and they commit, they not only become part of your team, you’re now on theirs as well. Gifting is an effective way to connect further, deepen the relationship and build trust and commitment to your brand.

The Goal of Gifting to Clients

When I meet with potential clients for the first time, I want to know their goals for adding gifting as part of their relationship marketing. Here are a couple of common responses to my question.

They Want to Give an Experience

The goal for any company is to stand out among the sea of competitors. To help in that process, creating a memorable client experience is a top priority. Creating this experience can look many ways depending on what type of company you have. A few examples would be sending a thank you/onboarding gift when they choose your company or sending a gift for their anniversary with your company.

They Are Looking to Introduce the Company/Rebranding Coming up with unique and memorable ways to introduce or reintroduce your company can be a tedious process. This is the perfect time to create a new gifting program to help elevate brand awareness, stay top-ofmind, and generate buzz.

The Gift Should Reflect Your Brand Image

When you think of your company, think of 2 to 3 words that describe your brand. When creating a gift design, make sure you use those elements. The gift needs to make sense and elicit the same meaning and feelings your brand does.

Your Gifts Should be Duplicatable

When you can find the perfect items that reflect your brand, you want to duplicate the process. You want to be able to create the same gift each time a gift is needed. Do you really have the time to be in stores shopping for gift items when you bring on a new client? You will spend a lot of time and eat away at efficiencies and profit by doing this. A smart way around this is to offer different gifting levels. For example, if a client spends a certain amount with your company, they get a gift (you can have different levels of this as well), or if a client refers someone, they get a “thank you for the referral” gift. Doing this will keep the process uniform.

Create a Manageable Gifting Budget

I called this “gifting smart.” Choose a budget that you feel comfortable with, even if things get tight. I say that because I believe that even in tough economic times, corporate gifting is still a vital marketing process.

Include Your Branding Elements in Your Gifts

Visual elements that tie in your branding are key. The client will recognize things like your brand colors and logo. Adding features of your brand keep things cohesive and shows thought and creativity.

Your Gift Should Make Sense

The items in your gift should complement each other. Don’t add a branded flashlight in a charcuterie gift. Or add a delicious gourmet cheese to an office essentials gift. You get the point. Thoughtful gifts can have a more significant impact and create a loyal connection with your brand than adding random items without any thought. ¤

Helpful Tips

No matter how you choose to accomplish the goal of adding gifting to your relationship marketing program. Whether you hire a gift service like The Personal Gift Basket Co or you do it all in-house, here are a few tips that can help you along the way:

Don’t Over-Brand Your Company

Share your brand but don’t over-brand. When giving a gift, try not to overwhelm the client with branded products. Have a healthy balance of branded and non-branded items.
