CONTEXT The project is a proposal to address one of the effects of rapid urbanization in big cities like Hanoi. Rapidly increasing population leads to higher construction density. The corollary is an increase in the demand for land for cemeteries. Meanwhile, most cemeteries in the city are still using traditional burial methods. This method not only requires large usable area, it also pollutes the environment as well as pushes the cost of burial up. The solution to the problem of price, high population density,in big city is high-rise apartment buildings, so the same solution can be applied to cemeteries.

5th year

Contemplative space The first floor is a large, open space, full of light, with 10 statues, each represents one of the 10 teachings of Buddha, enabling people to contemplate the philosophy of life, retreats before going up to the ash storage space

Ash storage space The moving flow is a spiral staircase that runs around the storage core from the 1st floor to the 32nd floor symbolizing human life in modern society. The paths leading to the floors of each floor combine with the open spaces with green tubs such as pauses, tranquility in the life of each person, so they can spend some time to sit back, talk to each others, visit, and remember the dead.

LOCATION A12 Trung Tu - Dong Tac, Hanoi apartment complex, adjacent to Dong Tac and Ton That Tung pavement. The building is one of 1516 old apartments with a scale of 2 to 5 floors built between 1960 and 1980. Currently, it is on the list of 42 dangerous old apartment complexes in Hanoi.

CONTEXT The problems still encountered in the current areas are population overcrowding, with urban development, a growing population causes traffic jams, the density of use increases. In addition, spontaneous expansion of the living space, affecting the architectural facade of the building as well as the safety of the dormitory.

PROPOSAL The renovated space will be an integrated area of flexible spaces between residential and commercial, between internal and external transport, flexible and sustainable transformation.

LOCATION

CONTEXT

PROPOSAL

The old quarter (OQ) is one of the oldest area off Hanoi city Located on Phung Hung street and right next to the old railway bridge connect the Hanoi railway station to Gia Lam railway station.

The OQ is one of the most densely populated area in Hanoi. Economic activites in the old quarter can be classified to 5 sectors: trade, service, retail, restaurant and other industry. Today, along with business prosperity, the OQ is now facing many critical urban problems and in process of declining its value. Main problems inclue: • Downgraded overall physical enviroment (housing, architecture, living enviroment) • Traffic pressure and safety • Degradation of the overall townscape and walking enviroment The OQ is at the dilemma: a heritage, a vibrant business area and at the same time, a slum. If no action is taken, the OQ will soon lose all of its values.

Improve and revitalize public space surrounding the OQ, connect the inside and outside walking pavement, increase the retail and business activities for the OQ, In the same time, propose a new living typology for the residents but also keeping the business, stores, restaurant, in the OQ running like before.

PROPOSAL PLAN

Europan 15 - ‘DIE LOCKSCHUPPEN’

project team: Tong Tran Duc Tuan, Nguyen Cong Thanh, Nguyen Viet Anh

‘Die Lockschuppen’ is a new type of living, where living, working and resting come together in harmony The idea is to create a new neighborhood, which funtions as a joint to connect the residental area on the north, the industry area on the west, the park on the east and the city on the south Here we aim toward a future of community working and living enviroment, where people of different disciplines can together share resources, infrastructure, space and information. With the development of machinery technology, the mass production activities will be soon operated by machine and robot. Infact there will be a larger need for handcraft and prototype design. Beside, there is a growing tendency of working from distance, that means people can work freely wherever and wvhenever they want. That new type of working will require a very flexible form of office and workshop, co-working space can provide the answer for that.

Located between many different players, the site faces a very challegeing urban planing situation but also provide an opportunity to create an active, dynamic and productive community. To the north, the fallow land with the old facilities will be renovated to create a green connection between the residential area and the downtown. The former ‘Lockschuppen’ and freight hall with their industrial quality will be refurbished to form a series of forum and exhibition spaces. Next to the rail station square, a new living - working complex is planed with a diverse type of housing and workshop. The workshops function as the atom of the “Productive community”, they together with the housing form different courtyards, which linked with each other and open up to the attractive green space. The strict arrangement of the diffentiated height development of the buildings enhance the urban atmosphere of the place. The former Selb station building will have a new function as an information and cultural event center and together with the new designed rail station square create a new indentity for the area.

Tay Ho House Located in a quite quiet area near West Lake, Hanoi, ‘Friendly House # 003’ is designed for the purpose of a young family’s weekend getaway. The idea was based on three factors: How to organize space for a weekend house in a densed urban area, 6x10m in size; using friendly materials, creating a rustic and relaxing atmosphere; finally, the energy saving problem for a sun-tolerant house in the West.
