about the writing contest PURPOSE To provide a stage for Chinese Americans and American Chinese learners to present their Chinese writing skills and increase their understanding of Chinese language and culture. This contest also creates a platform for peer learning and idea exchange to spark more interest in studying Chinese.

CATEGORY To encourage all Chinese learners of all background and ages, the contest is divided into two broad categories: Non-Heritage and Heritage. (Each broad category could be further subdivided depending on contestants’ age1).

CONTESTANTS Both Non-Heritage2 Chinese learners and Chinese Americans born outside of China are welcome to enter this contest. Contestants must be current residents of North Carolina and under the age of 28.

JUDGES The judging committee will include Chinese faculties from the Confucius Institute, and Chinese teachers and scholars from the local community.

writing contest procedure REGISTRATION January 9 - February 21, 2017 Please submit an online registration form at: http://bit.ly/2cqAnTs This form will officially close on February 21, 2017 at 11:59pm (ET). We will not accept anymore registrations after the registration form closes, no exceptions. Be sure to check your registration and submission statuses at: http://bit.ly/2czJGWs

FIRST SECTION (70%) January 9 - February 21, 2017 Please choose from one of the following topics: • Describe someone you like or are familiar with • Describe something you like or are familiar with Please submit your writing composition electronically at: https://form.jotform.com/62555820291153 Writings must be in simplified or traditional Chinese with a word limit of 300 to 600 characters. Only writings submitted through this form will be accepted. Each contestant can only submit one writing composition for this section. Writing composition submission form will officially close on February 21, 2017 at 11:59pm (ET).

SECOND SECTION (30%) March 7 - March 11, 2017 All contestants will be required to submit a short writing composition within a 3-hour time limit. You may choose from the following time sessions: March 7 6pm-9pm (ET) • Tuesday Wednesday March 8 6pm-9pm (ET) • Thursday March 9 6pm-9pm (ET) • Fridayday March 10 6pm-9pm (ET) • March 11 1pm-4pm (ET) • Saturday Each time session will have a different writing topic, which will only be announced at the beginning of that 3-hour session. Links of each session will only be sent to those participating. Contestants must submit his/her compositions online by the end of that time session. The timed writing must be in simplified or traditional Chinese characters (no length limit). Each contestant can only participate in one time session. Duplicated entries will not be considered. Internet connection and Chinese inputting softwares are required!All finalists will be invited to compete in the final round.

writing contest awards We will announce a list of winners on April 3rd, 2017. All winners will be invited to the awarding ceremony on April 29th, 2017. Winners should attend the award ceremony to find out his/her placements.

OUTSTANDING ORGANIZATION We will grant special awards to teachers/organizations based on the number of students recommended, number of winners, and previous participations. Award winners and specific awarding amount will be decided and notified after April 14th.
