HERE’S TO THE PEOPLE, THE PRODUCTS AND THE PLACES This marks our 10th anniversary of the Con-

crete Wave Buyer’s Guide. It comes on the heels of two industry trade shows: Agenda and ISPO. Agenda is held in Long Beach, California, while ISPO is in Munich. For skaters, each show is like being a kid in a candy store. Seeing all the new product, combined with the other sights and sounds, is an amazing experience. For those who work the booths, an enormous amount of stamina is required—both day and night! In the Guide, we’re proud to bring you the very latest gear from dozens of companies. It’s very important to remember that there are people behind each of the products showcased in this guide, and the photos above show just a fraction of the many hundreds of dedicated men and women who make up this industry. Over the last few years, North American companies are finding their way to ISPO and European companies are coming to Agenda. This is leading to some great friendships, and it has begun to build some very strong business relationships.

18

Travel helps to foster better understanding between people of different countries. It also gives you a different perspective on the world. It’s taken some time, but there is a vast global network of longboarders who are having a profound effect. Our encounters with fellow skaters (both near and far) leave a lifetime of great memories and deep roots. As proof of this, I am proud to publish a photo of my friend Jeremy Sochin, who runs a very cool shop in Lucerne, Switzerland. I met Jeremy at last year’s ISPO, and we hit it off immediately. But I never would have met Jeremy if it weren’t for Don Tashman from Loaded, whom I met 14 years ago at the ASR (Action Sports Retailer) show. I wouldn’t have been at that show if it hadn’t been for this magazine. And if weren’t for longboarding, I never would have created the mag. So, as you think about your next longboard purchase, think about where it might take you! Enjoy the issue!

NEW IDEAS FOR BY MICHAEL BROOKE

PUMPTRACK: THE ENDLESS CARVE BACK IN THE FALL OF 2013, Alex Lenz, the publisher of Germany’s 40inch Longboard Mag, told me about a riding track. “It’s called Pumptrack, and we’re bringing it to the ISPO show,” he said. I checked out the video and was instantly intrigued. But it was only when I got to ISPO and rode the track for myself that I really became mesmerized. Pumptrack does not replace skateparks, but for those communities looking for an enormous bang for their buck, you simply cannot beat it. I had the chance to meet up with the inventor of the Pumptrack, Erik Burgon, in Munich.

Fabian Laute followed by Heiko Schöller and Stefan Kolpatzik.

When did you make your first pumptrack? The first wood pumptrack I ever made was in 2003. It was for a project I was working on in Finale Ligure on the Italian Riviera. Believe it or not, it was a total accident! My goal was to create an easy-to-ride, wavelike structure that would give the rider the feeling of weightlessness on a bike. It’s a sensation that is foreign to most beginner and intermediate riders. The result was this snakelike structure that you could ride without pedaling or using your brakes, only pumping. This pumping concept, along with many more years of experiments, prototypes, mishaps and countless hours of design work, led me to this current, patented, award-winning design. What happened next? We took the whole project to a new level in 2012. With input from top pros in all wheeled sports disciplines, product development insights from one of the best ramp-building companies on the planet (American Ramp Company) and our in-house materials experts and engineers crunching the numbers, we came up with a fantastic finished product that is making people of all different sports disciplines, ages, skill levels and walks of life smile, all over the world.

What are some of the items that go into making the Pumptrack? We have three build methods that all use the same proportions and modular system. The first method uses a waterproof plywood and treated-lumber frame. The second method has hot-dip

galvanized, laser-cut steel for the frame. Both of these builds use stainless steel fasteners and 3M construction adhesives, and have woven fiberglass riding surfaces with a special grip that works great for all sports and is excellent in wet conditions. The third type is precast concrete, and it just rocks!

PHOTOS:MR-BOOKWOOD.COM

Concrete Wave: How did you get involved with this idea? Erik Burgon: For as long as I can remember I have been building trails, obstacles, jumps and anything else you can imagine to ride my bike on. This passion turned into a full-time job and eventually the company known as Bikeparkitect. The name comes from “Bikepark Architect.”

2014 We have cement and rebar in there. It is a truly sustainable system for permanent, maintenance-free fun for any community. We keep it accessible, price-wise, delivering the most fun for the money in any category of sports infrastructure and playground equipment. What has been the reaction from riders? The track has a funny effect on people. It is different in

every case, of course, but generally speaking, it makes you feel happy. There is a certain natural “flow” that you can only truly experience when your mind and body are working together in harmony and perfect sync. Finding your personal rhythm [on the track], however fast or slow that may be, seems to make that connection a lot quicker and easier to achieve than normal. That kind of experience is usually a very per-

METRO SHOES

What are your thoughts on the longboarding community and its sense of style? I think a lot of this reminds me [of] how street skateboarding emerged in the mid-’80s. Street skaters were still trying to find their groove because they were the bastard sons of vert skating. The street skaters were those skaters who couldn’t skate vert. This is kind of how the freeride skaters are being treated now – because they can’t skate street. Well, this is wrong. I want to embrace that community and guide the community in a positive way if I can.

What’s the best way for skateboarders to get one of these tracks for their community? We are on the web at modularpumptrack.com, and you can find us on Twitter and Facebook @bikeparkitect.

TRANSITIONING FROM HARD GOODS TO SOFT GOODS

SOFT GOODS (AKA CLOTHING AND SHOES) have so far been elusive for most longboard brands. While it’s possible to buy shirts from most of your favorite longboard companies, they are generally a small part of the business. None of the major shoe companies has developed shoes specifically for the longboard market. Enter Buddy Carr, who has almost 30 years in the skate industry. As head of Metro Wheels, Carr decided to launch his own shoe brand based on the wheels. We caught up with him at his Oceanside, California, offices to discuss things. Concrete Wave: So why start a shoe brand within longboarding? Buddy Carr: I look at all the skaters who are passionate about what they do – just as I am passionate. I see skaters spending their hard-earned money on shoes, and they are giving their money to companies who [couldn’t] care less about them. In fact, most skate shoe companies want to disassociate from them. This makes no sense to me. I want to provide the freeride skaters with their own shoe brand. They will know that when they spend their money on Metro Footwear, they are spending it on a company who cares about them. The big shoe companies don’t want to acknowledge they are there.

sonal thing, but when it can happen in a group of 10 people, or more, with a similar rhythm on there, then you really see the magic happen.

What’s been the reaction to the shoes thus far? We went into the Agenda trade show and we actually didn’t know what to expect. We introduced a whole new category in the skate shoe market. The truth is we were welcomed. We were welcomed by skaters and by the other brands that were there exhibiting. The industry knows that I care. I got support from the industry, and this means a lot to me.

Buddy Carr of Metro Wheels (and now shoes).

As you roll out the shoes, what are your immediate goals? We’ve introduced two shoes to start, and several more are coming. We will be sponsoring events and a professional team.

Does this mean you’ll be sponsoring riders and events? Absolutely. We’ll have a footwear team just like we have a wheel team. We’ll give back and we’ll acknowledge and support freeriders in any way we can.

You’ve seen a lot trends come and go. Where do you think the introduction of this shoe will take things? I am the guy with skateboarding’s first freeride shoe developed by a longboard brand. I am certain that within two or three years’ time, there will be a whole category of freeride shoes. You’ll walk into a skate shop and you’ll see a wall of street skate shoes and a wall of freeride shoes. This is similar to what happened in snowboarding: different types of boots for different types of riding. Metro will be copied, but we will always be known as the first to market a shoe via our hardgoods roots.

Is the construction of the shoe specifically geared to freeriders? We developed a shoe that will cross over for the freeriders and the downhill guys. There are some pivot points on the bottom of the shoe. The reason for this is that I see a lot of freeriders adding street tricks like ollies to their moves. So we added features to the shoe to embrace that evolution because we know it’s coming.

Any final thoughts? So many people get involved for the wrong reasons. I think a number of the older folks in this industry feel that skateboarding owes them something. And I was thinking, “Skateboarding doesn’t owe me anything. I owe skateboarding because skateboarding put me where I am today.” So if I can help direct skateboarding in a positive way, then that’s my way of giving back.

The first designs from Metro Shoes.

POSTCARD FROM

Hawaii BY MIKE JUCKER IF YOU THINK ABOUT HAWAII, beaches, turquoise lagoons and big waves come to mind. Hawaii is synonymous with ocean sports and is the birthplace of most board sports, including surfing, kiteboarding, windsurfing and stand-up paddling (SUP). The people of Hawaii live and love the lifestyle surrounding ocean activities. Lesser known than its beaches are Hawaii’s tall mountains. But that is exactly what Hawaii is: a mountain range that reaches above the surface of the ocean. Maui is also called “The Valley Isle.” If there are valleys, there have to be mountains, right? Many people are not aware that Maui has a 10,013-foot-tall mountain named Haleakala. Haleakala is one of the world’s most beautiful roads — perfect for a downhill bomb. From the thin air at the summit, all the way to the beach, it’s simply breathtaking. The run gives you a sense of what it means to be in the middle of the Pacific. A small but hardcore group of longboarders call the slopes of Haleakala their home. A recent video called The Mountain showcases some of the best local talent and the beauty of this descent. The island is very rural and widespread, so some of the hot spots of Maui’s longboarding scene are far apart and not always easy to find. But the local scene of longboarders is growing, and so is the talent. I was lucky enough to settle on Maui more than 12 years ago after a long journey around the world on a hunt for perfect waves. Originally a “child of the mountains” myself, I grew up in the town of Zürich, which was the epicenter of Switzerland’s skateboard and snowboard boom. But after years of an active life

in skateboarding and snowboarding, my urge for a new frontier — surfing — grew and grew. I still remember the first longboards coming to Zürich in the early 1990s, brought by skaters that traveled to the U.S. and brought them back home. We longboarded the streets of Zürich during the night when there was less traffic. After a summer of longboarding, I knew I could not stay for another winter. So I left in search of the perfect wave. After five years of chasing waves in numerous countries, I found a new home here in the islands of Hawaii. I arrived to my own little “surf nirvana.” Maui was (and is) paradise. I surfed every day I could find a wave and rarely thought about skateboarding or snowboarding. Long forgotten was my past as a skater and snowboarder. Nevertheless, I found it very unfortunate that there was no skatepark or anywhere to ride on flat days. The skate shop in my new town was tiny. The roads were subpar compared to home. After a few years my wife bought me a longboard for my birthday and I started to cruise and carve around the resort where she was working. I had fun, but frankly, without anyone to share the stoke, I stopped going out on my own. Given the road infrastructure, commuting to and from work on my longboard was out of the question.

A few years later a great opportunity came into my life. I was offered the chance to start a company with my travel friend I met in my days in Central America. We started up a skateboard and longboard company, and we put our heart and soul into the project. We designed some cruiser boards inspired by my new life as a surfer and quickly added freeride boards to the lineup after our initial success. After a few test rides and skate sessions, it was like my skateboarding days were back and alive. I met some other skateboarders on my search for a perfect road to test new boards. When the construction boom abruptly ended in 2008, I found some very nice empty streets to test boards and reconnect with my inner skateboard child through longboarding. I discovered that my surfing paradise was revealing a completely new side. Not only did I find more and more great roads, but all of a sudden there were people in my neighborhood who had the same passion for longboarding as I did. We were all looking for a board sport during the flat summer months, so we started exploring the island for skate spots and met more kids with incredible talent mobbing the streets of their towns at tremendous speeds. It was more than just coincidence when I ran into Bill Iliffe, a design engineer and a lifelong skater. He was in the process of developing his first longboard truck. We instantly teamed up and started to test his prototypes on my boards and go longboarding as much as we could. Thanks to my rediscovery of longboarding, I was able to reconnect with my roots as a skateboarder and improve my surfing skills at the same time.

In 1989 we started producing skateboards by hand in the garage of my parents. Since 1997 we have our own factory in Wald City, Switzerland. We then won the ISPO New Brands Award in the year 2000 with our skateboards in the category Summer Hardware. Indiana was one of the first companies to build longboards with flex in combination with snowboard technology and composite construction. Our boards are adjusted to the weight of the rider and therefore suited for all skateboarders. With our very successful race team, Indiana celebrated several European and world champion slalom skateboarders. Only a few brands can rely on 20 years of experience, as we stand in our factory day by day to produce the best skateboards for you. indiana.ch

newton gives riders lowered stability without a drop deck or drop-through mount. The newton NEW LOW retains the geometry of popular 50-degree RKP trucks in a topmount package. The 53mm height places the axle the same distance to the underside of a board as other trucks drop-mounted (varies with board thickness). The design has been optimized using FEA, features Grade 9 axle and kingpin and weighs 13.4 oz. Multiple colors and several bushing options. Works ideally top mounted on cutaway-style decks, boards with wheel wells or regular boards with a riser. In select skate shops now. newtonskate.com

NordiK is starting 2014 with bearings and slide gloves to add to our selection of longboard wheels. The bearings come in multiple types — Abec 7’s, Abec 9’s, Ceramic, and Built-in spacers; the built-in spacer bearing is called the Supersonic. The slide gloves are for all-purpose riding and come with pucks to protect your palms, fingers and thumbs. Also, we plan to release a downhill wheel that will be competitive and affordable later this Spring. When it comes to price and quality, NordiK can’t be beat! Check us out at nordikskate.com.

The Shark Wheel is based on the shape of shark jaws. It is an innovative wheel that has defined performance advantages. It is the smoothestfeeling wheel on the planet, as it glides over rough terrain seamlessly. You no longer have to steamroll over every bump in the road. Our low-friction profile and top-notch material makes the wheel incredibly fast. Also, the sine wave shape lends itself to controlled sliding with its three-lipped design. The wheel has anti-chatter properties because it performs like an anti-lock car brake, quickly catching and releasing for a progressive slide. sharkwheel.com
