We Value Inclusion We welcome kids and adults of all ages and abilities to participate in any of our Concord Recreation programs. To help visually identify programs that are specifically designed for participants with disabilities, please look for this inclusion logo throughout the brochure. • As a Department, we support the reverse inclusion model. If a program is notated as an adaptive program, we still welcome participants WITHOUT disabilities to participate. Siblings, aides and classmates welcome! • As a Department, we acknowledge that the experience that takes place within these identified classes are open to different learning styles and accommodations. These classes will typically have fewer participants, more breaks, and visual schedules, when possible. • As a Department, we want parents to be proactive in identifying that their child may need extra help. To assure we are prepared to work with your child, you will be asked to fill out an intake assessment. For questions, adaptations, and accommodations, please contact Anna McKeown, Assistant Recreation Director, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. 2

ADAPTIVE

SUPER SOCCER SHINE We welcome kids and adults of all ages and abilities to participate in any of our Concord Recreation programs. To help visually identify programs that are specifically designed for participants with disabilities, please look for this inclusion logo throughout the brochure. 1) As a Department, we support the reverse inclusion model. If a program is notated as an adaptive program, we still welcome participants WITHOUT disabilities to participate. Siblings, aides and classmates welcome!

2) As a Department, we acknowledge that the experience that takes place within these identified classes are open to different learning styles and accommodations. These classes will typically have fewer participants, more breaks, and visual schedules, when possible.

3) As a Department, we want parents to be proactive in identifying that their child may need extra help. To assure we are prepared to work with your child, you will be asked to fill out an intake assessment. For questions, adaptations, and accommodations, please contact Anna McKeown, Assistant Recreation Director, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. 978-2871057

CHILDCARE SERVICES C ONCORD CAROUS EL PRES C HOOL Anita Stevanazzi-Hill, Childcare Services Manager Patti Doherty, Assistant Childcare Services Manager

WHO WE ARE

Concord Carousel Preschool has provided a half day preschool experience to children of Concord and the surrounding towns for the past 31 years. We offer a small, creative learning environment for children ages 2 years 9 months – 5 years. Concord Carousel operates 2, 3, and 4 day programs (based on age) from 9:15 to Noon. An optional extended day, “Stay and Play” is offered for an extra fee. Carousel also offers “Stay and Swim” (with swim lessons at the Beede Center) – based on the interests of our families.

OUR TEACHERS

The strength of our program lies in our highly qualified Early Childhood Professionals. Each classroom is staffed by two teachers who have specialized training in Early Childhood Education and experience working with young children.

OUR FACILITIES

Located in the Harvey Wheeler Community Center in West Concord, our facilities include four large sunny classrooms. Our outdoor play area is designed for imaginative play and includes a garden for planting and playing. Our learning experiences also extend into the West Concord community, with monthly visits to the library and field trips to local businesses, playgrounds and natural spaces.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Concord Carousel aims to create a safe, nurturing and quality preschool experience for our children and their families. Our activities promote children’s confidence, sense of wonder and natural passion for learning. There are opportunities to explore music, movement, science and nature. We also take numerous field trips to extend our learning beyond the classroom walls. Past trips have included walking trips to the bakery, post office and fire station, as well more distant locations like the Museum of Fine Arts, DeCordova Museum, Ecotarium and Theatreworks productions.

TYPICAL DAY AT CAROUSEL

It’s hard to describe a typical day at Carousel since every day is unique and each classroom bases their curriculum on the individual needs and interests of the children. Each day includes a free play period, snack, music , stories, projects and outdoor play. Each classroom has a theme for the week (or even longer) and the curriculum revolves around the theme while, at the same time, meeting our educational goals for each child. We also go on a number of field trips throughout the year, often walking within the local community but sometimes having parents drop off at the field trip site and occasionally take a school bus. We even taking a train to Concord Center for some trips! Our mornings are packed with fun and learning!! Concord Carousel is licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care. CHILDCARE SERVICES A F T ERSCHOOL- GRADES K-5 Anita Stevanazzi-Hill, Childcare Services Manager Patti Doherty, Assistant Childcare Services Manager WHO WE ARE

The AfterSchool Program has been providing care for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 since 1980. AfterSchool was created to meet the needs of families seeking an out-of school time program that is an enriching and social experience. Children attending Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 attend AfterSchool at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center in West Concord. Children in Grades 3 through 5 attend AfterSchool at the Hunt Recreation Center in Concord Center. Transportation is provided by the Concord Public Schools from each child’s school to their AfterSchool Program site.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Concord Recreation’s AfterSchool Program has a strong reputation for excellence. Our AfterSchool daily schedule at both sites includes time for supervised indoor and outdoor play, special events, and homework, along with science, arts and crafts and cooking projects. Field trips and on site performers are also part of our programs.

OUR STAFF

A major strength of our program is the outstanding qualities of our professional staff. Group leaders and assistants are selected based on their experience with school age children, with many having a background in education. All staff members are committed to providing a nurturing, positive experience for each child while presenting them with exciting daily activities.

GRADES K-2

Harvey Wheeler Community Center 978-318-3045 Located in the heart of West Concord, HWCC has 4 sunny classrooms and an outdoor play area designed for imaginative play. Our groups are often multi-aged, providing a family atmosphere where all children know each other, enhancing social growth and peer interaction. There are many places of interest within easy walking distance, including the Fowler Library, Rideout Field and nature trails.

GRADES 3 -5

TYPICAL DAY AT AFTERSCHOOL After a long day at school, our AfterSchoolers are ready for some recreational time. Even so, we sneak some learning into every day. They arrive hungry so a self-serve snack is the first order of business (or a lunch from home on Tuesdays). Then it’s time for some physical activity. When the weather is nice, we go outside for some unstructured play interspersed with the opportunity for some organized sports and games. When the weather doesn’t cooperate, each of our sites has access to either a gym or “big room” space for indoor play. Throughout the day, we offer activities that provide fun and learning. We visit the Concord library frequently and visit parts of the community (depending on the site). We have presenters come in several times a month including parkour, dance and martial arts instructors. The TOYS club from the high school comes numerous times each year to our K-2 site and does science experiments with the children, while our Hunt site works with Musketaquid Arts learning to protect the environment. Each day, we spend some time completing homework . AfterSchool is a great place to facilitate friendships with those who attend a different elementary school! The AfterSchool program are licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care. For more information please contact Anita Stevanazzi-Hill, Childcare Manager, at 978-318-3045 or email childcareprograms@concordma.gov You can find us on the web at concordafterschools.com.

Hunt Recreation Center 978-287-1061 Located historic Concord Center, the Hunt Recreation site offers activity space on the first floor that can be divided to create smaller groupings, with computer stations for homework, and space for quiet activities, art, games and other group activities. Upstairs offers a full size gymnasium. Our outdoor space offers basketball courts, a playground and spacious fields. The Concord Library, nature trails and places of historic interest are within easy walking distance. The AfterSchool Program runs from the end of the school day until 6 PM, Monday – Friday. We are not in session whenever school is closed.

TYPICAL DAY AT TERRIFIC TUESDAYS

A typical day at TT is much like a day at AfterSchool, but in a smaller group setting. Our activities through the day include , of course, physical activity indoors and out, along with arts and craft, science, and other projects. The children enjoy playing board games and working with building toys in creative ways. The emphasis is on getting to know others and working together in a group that encompasses grade k-5. The wide age span offers opportunities for older children to serve as mentors for younger children and opportunities to work together on projects at a variety of levels. The children look forward to reconnecting each week with children (and teachers) that they only see once a week! 30

SCIENCE MYSTERIES

Calling all Minecrafters! Building Minecraft mods is a great way to learn programming, harness creativity, and enhance problem-solving skills while making your favorite game even better. Students will design custom textures, build amazing structures, give their players new abilities, and depending on experience even create their own mini-games all while learning Linux and programming.

How did you do that? Solve awesome science mysteries by becoming a super science sleuth! Identify mystery powders and unknown concoctions using chemical tests. Use a chemical to create crazy “atomic worms” that glow.
