Motivation. Most of us work harder in the presence of others. Having a trainer by your side can provide the encouragement, energy and motivation you need to jumpstart your routine. A trainer can also help you set goals, create a plan to accomplish them and celebrate the day you reach them. Consistency. Do you find it difficult to stick with a program or habit? A trainer can hold you accountable and help you overcome all the excuses you might use to avoid your commitment to exercise. It’s a lot harder to skip the gym when you know someone is waiting for you. Clarity. Fitness can be confusing. There is a lot of information to sort through. Eat this, not that. Cardio before or after strength training? Your trainer can help you find credible information and provide direction on your fitness journey. A trainer can help remove the guesswork so you can put all your energy toward accomplishing your goals. Confidence. The gym can be intimidating. Working with a trainer allows you to become confident with how to perform exercises, use machines and navigate the facility. After a few sessions, you will feel ready to tackle the weight room on your own. Even better, an ego boost during exercise can promote stronger self-confidence and self-efficacy, which can help you stick with your exercise program over the long term. Individual Attention. When it comes to fitness, everyone is different. Your unique body mechanics, experience, goals, fitness level, likes and dislikes can guide your trainer in creating a plan that is specific to your needs. With a program that fits, you are more likely to maintain the habit and see results. FUN. Believe it or not, exercise can be enjoyable. A savvy personal trainer can make exercise both effective and fun. Group or buddy training can be a great way to increase enjoyment, make exercise social and attain the services of a trainer for a cheaper rate. And simply working with a trainer who you like and respect can be enough to provide you with more gratification from your workouts.

INTERESTS Spending time with family, outdoor activities, nutrition

TRAINING PHILOSOPHY "With all of its many health benefits, I believe in the power of exercise and dedication. All should incorporate strength and functional training exercises into their lives. Working at their own pace, I love to develop and build relationships with clients".

8 BENEFITS OF SWIMMING

1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8.

22

https://www.swimming.org/justswim/8-benefits-of-swimming/

Full body workout. Swimming uses all the muscles in the body so whether you swim a gentle breaststroke or hammer butterfly, you will get a full body workout. Plus, exercising in water makes your body work harder so 30 minutes in a pool is worth 45 minutes of the same activity on land. Great for general wellbeing. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times a week alongside a balanced, healthy diet and lifestyle is one of the best ways to stay fit and healthy and maintain a positive mental outlook. Do it with friends, and it’s even more fun! De-stresses and relaxes. Whether it’s work stressing you out, the kids being a nightmare, or just life in general, we all get times we just want to SCREAM. Well, help is at hand. Swimming regularly can lower stress levels, reduce anxiety and depression, and improve your sleep patterns. Feeling the mental benefits of swimming takes just a light swim. No lane pounding needed. Burns those calories. Swimming is one of the most effective ways to burn calories. A gentle swim can burn over 200 calories in just half an hour, more than double that of walking. And a faster swim would see that chocolate bar gone quicker than if you went running or cycling. Lowers the risk of diseases. As well as being a great form of cardiovascular exercise, swimming just 30 minutes a week can help to guard against heart disease, stroke and type 2 diabetes. Supports the body. Water supports up to 90 per cent of the body’s weight. So if you sprained an ankle at Monday night football or have a long term injury or illness, swimming is a brilliant way to stay active. Increases your energy levels. Inactivity and not aging is often responsible for people’s lack of energy. Just 30 minutes of swimming three times per week can boost your energy levels through increased metabolic rate. Exercising without the sweat. If sweating puts you off other forms of exercise, fear not! As a swimmer, you’ll never feel sweaty no matter how hard you work because the water around you is constantly cooling you down.

WHO WE ARE

Concord Carousel Preschool has provided a half day preschool experience to children of Concord and the surrounding towns for the past 31 years. We offer a small, creative learning environment for children ages 2 years 9 months – 5 years. Concord Carousel operates 2, 3, and 4 day programs (based on age) from 9:15 to Noon. An optional extended day, “Stay and Play” is offered for an extra fee. Carousel also offers “Stay and Swim” (with swim lessons at the Beede Center) – based on the interests of our families.

OUR TEACHERS

The strength of our program lies in our highly qualified Early Childhood Professionals. Each classroom is staffed by two teachers who have specialized training in Early Childhood Education and experience working with young children.

OUR FACILITIES

Located in the Harvey Wheeler Community Center in West Concord, our facilities include four large sunny classrooms. Our outdoor play area is designed for imaginative play and includes a garden for planting and playing. Our learning experiences also extend into the West Concord community, with monthly visits to the library and field trips to local businesses, playgrounds and natural spaces.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Concord Carousel aims to create a safe, nurturing and quality preschool experience for our children and their families. Our activities promote children’s confidence, sense of wonder and natural passion for learning. There are opportunities to explore music, movement, science and nature. We also take numerous field trips to extend our learning beyond the classroom walls. Past trips have included walking trips to the bakery, post office and fire station, as well more distant locations like the Museum of Fine Arts, DeCordova Museum, Ecotarium and Theatreworks productions.

TYPICAL DAY AT CAROUSEL

It’s hard to describe a typical day at Carousel since every day is unique and each classroom bases their curriculum on the individual needs and interests of the children. Each day includes a free play period, snack, music , stories, projects and outdoor play. Each classroom has a theme for the week (or even longer) and the curriculum revolves around the theme while, at the same time, meeting our educational goals for each child. We also go on a number of field trips throughout the year, often walking within the local community but sometimes having parents drop off at the field trip site and occasionally take a school bus. We even take the train to Concord Center for some trips! Our mornings are packed with fun and learning!!

CHILDCARE SERVICES A F T ERSCHOOL- GRADES K-5 Anita Stevanazzi-Hill, Childcare Services Manager Patti Doherty, Assistant Childcare Services Manager WHO WE ARE

The AfterSchool Program has been providing care for children in Kindergarten through Grade 5 since 1980. AfterSchool was created to meet the needs of families seeking an out-of school time program that is an enriching and social experience. Children attending Kindergarten, Grade 1 and Grade 2 attend AfterSchool at the Harvey Wheeler Community Center in West Concord. Children in Grades 3 through 5 attend AfterSchool at the Hunt Recreation Center in Concord Center. Transportation is provided by the Concord Public Schools from each child’s school to their AfterSchool Program site.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Concord Recreation’s AfterSchool Program has a strong reputation for excellence. Our AfterSchool daily schedule at both sites includes time for supervised indoor and outdoor play, special events, and homework, along with science, arts and crafts and cooking projects. Field trips and on site performers are also part of our programs.

OUR STAFF

A major strength of our program is the outstanding qualities of our professional staff. Group leaders and assistants are selected based on their experience with school age children, with many having a background in education. All staff members are committed to providing a nurturing, positive experience for each child while presenting them with exciting daily activities.

GRADES K-2

Harvey Wheeler Community Center 978-318-3045 Located in the heart of West Concord, HWCC has 4 sunny classrooms and an outdoor play area designed for imaginative play. Our groups are often multi-aged, providing a family atmosphere where all children know each other, enhancing social growth and peer interaction. There are many places of interest within easy walking distance, including the Fowler Library, Rideout Field and nature trails.

GRADES 3 -5

Hunt Recreation Center 978-287-1061 Located historic Concord Center, the Hunt Recreation site offers activity space on the first floor that can be divided to create smaller groupings, with computers stations for homework, and space for quiet activities, art, games and other group activities. Upstairs offers a full size gymnasium. Our outdoor space offers basketball courts, a playground and spacious fields. The Concord Library, nature trails and places of historic interest are within easy walking distance.

TYPICAL DAY AT AFTERSCHOOL After a long day at school, our AfterSchoolers are ready for some recreational time. Even so, we sneak some learning into every day. They arrive hungry so a self-serve snack is the first order of business (or a lunch from home on Tuesdays). Then it’s time for some physical activity. When the weather is nice, we go outside for some unstructured play interspersed with the opportunity for some organized sports and games. When the weather doesn’t cooperate, each of our sites has access to either a gym or “big room” space for indoor play. Throughout the day, we offer activities that provide fun and learning. We visit the Concord library frequently and visit parts of the community (depending on the site). We have presenters come in several times a month including parkour, dance and martial arts instructors. The TOYS club from the high school comes numerous times each year to our K-2 site and does science experiments with the children, while our Hunt site works with Musketaquid Arts learning to protect the environment. Each day, we spend some time completing homework . AfterSchool is a great place to facilitate friendships with those who attend a different elementary school!

OPEN HOUSE Tuesday August 27th 5:00pm-6:00pm

The AfterSchool Program runs from the end of the school day until 6 PM, Monday – Friday. We are not in session whenever school is closed. The AfterSchool programs are licensed by the Department of Early Education and Care. For more information please contact Anita Stevanazzi-Hill, Childcare Manager, at 978-318-3045 or email childcareprograms@concordma.gov You can find us on the web at concordafterschools.com. 26

TYPICAL DAY AT TERRIFIC TUESDAYS

A typical day at TT is much like a day at AfterSchool, but in a smaller group setting. Our activities through the day include , of course, physical activity indoors and out, along with arts and craft, science, and other projects. The children enjoy playing board games and working with building toys in creative ways. The emphasis is on getting to know others and working together in a group that encompasses grade k-5. The wide age span offers opportunities for older children to serve as mentors for younger children and opportunities to work together on projects at a variety of levels. The children look forward to reconnecting each week with children (and teachers) that they only see once a week!

ADAPTIVE

TRACK•TENNIS•SOCCER•MARTIAL ARTS•MICRO ATHLETICS

We welcome kids and adults of all ages and abilities to participate in any of our Concord Recreation programs. To help visually identify programs that are specifically designed for participants with disabilities, please look for this inclusion logo throughout the brochure. 1) As a Department, we support the reverse inclusion model. If a program is notated as an adaptive program, we still welcome participants WITHOUT disabilities to participate. Siblings, aides and classmates welcome!

2) As a Department, we acknowledge that the experience that takes place within these identified classes are open to different learning styles and accommodations. These classes will typically have fewer participants, more breaks, and visual schedules, when possible.

3) As a Department, we want parents to be proactive in identifying that their child may need extra help. To assure we are prepared to work with your child, you will be asked to fill out an intake assessment. For questions, adaptations, and accommodations, please contact Anna McKeown, Assistant Recreation Director, Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist. 978-287-1057

Pickleball has been a major hit in Concord! Get some playing time in this winter in the Hunt Gym. This popular game combines the elements of tennis, badminton and table tennis, played with a paddle and a whiffle ball on a modified tennis court. Due to its popularity, registration will ONLY be open to Concord/Carlisle residents the 1st week. Registration for Concord residents opens on Monday, August 12th at 7:30am. Non-residents will be able to register starting on Monday, August 19th at 7:30am. We anticipate these sessions to sell out. There will be NO drop-ins for indoor pickleball this year. If you are on the waitlist and space is available, a coordinator will contact you directly. PLEASE note that the indoor is split into two sessions per day. This is in hopes to have as many different people participate in our programs. Max 2 sections per person, per session. CANCELED CLASSES WILL NOT BE MADE UP.

BASKETBALL

CONCORD RECREATION YOUTH BASKETBALL

The Concord Recreation “In-Town basketball program is broken down into divisions for boys, girls and coed ranging from Kindergarten through High School. The program is designed for the development and enjoyment of the children regardless of their individual skill level.

FOUR KEY OBJECTIVES 1. To foster an environment where the players can have fun and learn to be good sports 2. To help players learn something new each week 3. Develop their basketball skills over the course of the season 4. To encourage all players to do their best and play as a team, regardless skill level PROGRAM POLICIES 1. Players must select only one night they cannot practice. We will make every effort to avoid that night. 2. Special requests must be entered at the time of registration. The Recreation Department realizes requests for reasons of transportation, child care, friends, etc., would be appreciated by parents. However, we cannot guarantee these special requests will be honored. We hope this is viewed as an opportunity to make new friends and connect with other families. 3. Siblings will be placed together unless otherwise noted. 4. Team placement is final following the team selection. 5. Participants must play in the Division designated for their grade.

COACHES NEEDED Concord Recreation is looking for volunteer coaches for all divisions. Basketball experience is a plus but not necessary. Please note that all teams must have an adult head coach, who must be present at all practices and games. High school students are still allowed to volunteer as assistant coaches. All accepted coaches will be required to attend a coaches training session and must be present the day of the tryout. We are encouraging fathers, mother, siblings, (etc.) that want to provide a positive experience for the players in the league to apply. For more about coaching or how to apply, visit http://concordrec. com/483/Recreation-Youth-Basketball *ALL DATES, DAYS AND LOCATIONS ARE SUBJECT TO CHANGE

Kids’ Test Kitchen is on a mission to get young eaters cooking, tasting, and thinking about healthy ingredients! Let’s continue to redefine kid food; one lesson, and one child at a time! Each week we’ll explore new or familiar foods in their raw, unmanipulated state. Then, working as a team, we’ll slice, dice, peel, measure, and cook until we’ve prepared the finished dish. We’ll be recreating savory favorites and introducing a dessert that pleases the senses and the body! CONCORD RECREATION FALL/WINTER 2019-2020

The Concord-Carlisle Community Chest is proud to support Concord Recreation Youth Scholarships

The Concord-Carlisle Community Chest was founded in 1947 as an organization of neighbors helping neighbors. Providing over $530,000 in annual support across more than 30 local human services organizations and special projects, the Community Chest seeks to strengthen our community by marshaling resources to help neighbors in need. Visit www.cccommunitychest.org to learn more about the Community Chest.

Our 2018-2019 campaign is underway! Join us to continue the tradition of helping our neighbors in need.
