ABQ to App aims to protect drone flyers host SW socialism event By Matthew Reisen

Albuquerque will host the inaugural Southwest Regional Socialism Conference this weekend, presented by The Party for Socialism and Liberation. The free all-day event will run from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. on Saturday at N’MPower, located at 136 Washington St. SE. Chris Banks, a member of the PSL Southwest chapter, said this is the first time a conference will be held in the region. “After four years of being involved in the social justice movement in Albuquerque, we’re taking this very ambitious step to try to organize a socialist conference in the Southwest,” Banks said. Gloria La Riva, convention speaker and Albuquerque native, was involved in the original founding of the PSL in June 2004, and ran for U.S. president in 2008 as a socialist candidate. As an organization, the PSL believes in and works to create a system and society where the wealth that workers and farmers create can benefit all people, she said. “To defeat capitalism and build a society of true peace and social justice, organization is needed, a party that embodies all the ideals of that new system and society, of socialism,” La Riva said. “And many people are wanting to know, just what is socialism? We think the conference will be an educational and inspiring event.” The PSL is heavily involved in anti-war and anti-police brutality movements along with opposing racism and attacks on women’s rights, and supporting LGBTQ rights, La Riva said. Banks stressed that the conference is not solely for activists or people who identify as socialists, but is open to anyone who wants to learn more about the ideology and the progressive movement in America and around the world. “It’s a conference for every person who is opposed to endless war, racism, poverty, the destruction of the environment and all injustices,” Banks said. “All are welcome and there is no level of experience required, just a desire to create a better world — one based on cooperation, instead of the one we live in which is based on lifeand-death competition.” The schedule includes programs, panel discussions, workshops and presentations, including a keynote speech on the recent bombings in Syria, he said. The speakers, some of whom are local, vary widely along with the topics they will address, he said. The conference begins at 9 a.m. with an opening from La Riva titled “The Exploited Will Fight Back!” La Riva will also give a speech early in the day addressing issues regarding Latin America, Cuba and their governments’ role in making real changes within the region, she said.

Paul Aitken flies a personal unmanned aerial vehicle, or UAV, around his neighborhood on Monday. Aitken helped create “Legal Flyer,” an application that lets drone pilots obtain flight permission and property releases from a tablet to prevent lawsuits and ensure people in commercial footage are aware they are being recorded.

By Liam Cary-Eaves Talk of drones can conjure concerns about privacy, safety and ethics for many, but one man has a different worry. He wants protection for himself while controlling any of his personal unmanned aerial vehicles. Paul Aitken uses his drones to take photos and videos, a practice that is at the intersection of new technology and privacy laws. He needed a solution that would protect him from lawsuits by ensuring that he wasn’t taking

footage of people without their consent, he said. “Most people are worried about drones ruining their privacy. They think that they are weaponized, unmanned vehicles,” Aitken said. “Drones bring perspective. It’s a new style.” In order to prevent such problems, Aitken teamed up with Jason Bache of Nerds Limited, a local electronics shop, to come up with an application called “Legal Flyer.” The app is meant to ensure people in commercial foot-

age are aware they are being recorded in addition to preventing lawsuits. Bache created “Legal Flyer” under Aitken’s ownership. “‘Legal Flyer’ is the easy and convenient way for pilots to obtain flight permission and property releases all from the iPad,” Aitken said. “It is illegal to take footage of people on their property or in their homes without their permission.” The two work with real estate companies, using their drones to take photos and video of properties from a

unique perspective that is otherwise hard to achieve. Although the team has permission to take footage of a particular house, they must get permission from neighbors in case footage of their properties was to slip in. After speaking at the National Association of Broadcasters show in Las Vegas, Aitken said that he needed to ensure that his method of recording video and photos was protected from a legal standpoint.

UNM running back Teriyon Gipson (7) runs through the middle of the NMSU defense during the Rio Grande Rivalry game Saturday night at Aggie Memorial Stadium in Las Cruces. The Lobos will host Fresno State tonight at 6 p.m.

No, Bob Davie hasn’t forgotten about last year’s 69-28 beat down at Fresno State. It’s hard to forget a loss he describes as the “lowest point” during his head coaching tenure at New Mexico. The Bulldogs were clearly the better team on the field that day, but injuries and a lack of depth let the game get out of hand early for the Lobos. Davie said he tried to not bring up the loss during the week, but he couldn’t help himself after Wednesday’s practice when he was trying to fire up the team. “There’s a lot of pride here. Obviously, there’s a lot of pride,” Davie said. “It has nothing to do with them as much as it has to do with us. I don’t blame them for what happened. It’s personal, but it’s all personal.” Now UNM (1-2) has the chance to show whether it has closed the gap against Fresno State (1-3) when the Lobos host the Bulldogs in both teams’ Mountain West opener today at University Stadium. Fresno State is a five-point favorite heading into the game.
