A sense of purpose
On the 50th anniversary of the SEK Ethos
El preámbulo del Ideario SEK (1969) expresa que la Institución está “al servicio del esfuerzo común de perfeccionar al ser humano y de lograr una sociedad mejor”.
The preamble of the SEK Ethos (1969) states that SEK is “at the service of the common human spirit of achievement, striving for a better society”.
Todos necesitamos un sentido de propósito, una misión, en nuestra vida personal y también colectiva. Las instituciones sociales, que sirven a los hombres y a las mujeres que se desarrollan en ellas, también deben tenerlo.
We all need a sense of purpose, a mission, in our personal and collective lives. Social institutions, which serve the men and women who are part of them, must also have one.
Hace ahora 50 años la Institución SEK, en su Ideario, marcó el origen de coordenadas de su ser, el mandato moral por el que elegía, libremente, regirse, y los vectores que apuntaban a un nuevo horizonte educativo. Durante medio siglo, y en las más diversas circunstancias, el SEK se ha mantenido fiel a dichos principios, y el espíritu de su Ideario –centrado en el alumno y basado en valores de libertad y responsabilidad, pluralidad y respeto, solidaridad y esfuerzo, e innovación, colaboración y perfeccionamiento– se ha hecho verdad en cada una sus aulas y en la experiencia de aprendizaje de cada uno de sus alumnos. Hoy, si cabe más que nunca, es necesario recordarnos la importancia de contar con un propósito vital. En un tiempo en el que debemos educar para la incertidumbre, y no la certeza, nuestra ambición es hacer de la Institución un lugar, y un modelo, en el que cada miembro de nuestra Comunidad Educativa –alumnos, profesores y familias– encuentre el estímulo, intelectual y moral, necesario para definir su propia misión y así poder participar en la construcción de un futuro más comprometido, más social y más humano.
Fifty years ago, SEK Group, in its Ethos laid the course to follow and set its moral compass by which it freely chose to be governed and the vectors that pointed towards a new horizon for education. For half a century, and in very different circumstances, SEK has remained true to these principles, and to the spirit of its Ethos –centred on the student and based on values of freedom and responsibility, plurality and respect, solidarity and effort and innovation, collaboration and improvement. This ethos has come to life in each of its classrooms and in the learning experiences of each of its students. Today, more so than ever, it is necessary to remind ourselves of the importance of having a purpose in life. At a time when we must educate for uncertainty, our ambition is to make SEK a place, and a model, in which each member of our educational community –students, teachers and families– find the intellectual and moral stimulus necessary to define their own mission and thus to be able to participate in the construction of a more committed, more social and more humanistic future.
Ahora, cuando los códigos de referencia en los que crecimos se transforman de forma vertiginosa, y se redefinen conceptos, e incluso valores, es el momento de volver, una y otra vez, a nuestro propio origen de coordenadas. Por eso, la Institución SEK, que siempre se ha asomado al futuro con la determinación de su espíritu pionero, quiere, desde estas líneas, reivindicar la fortaleza y la vigencia de sus ideales, y de sus convicciones.
Now, when the standards and landmarks we grew up with are being transformed at a dizzying pace, and when concepts and even values are being redefined, it is time to return, again and again, to our own original compass bearing, our initial course. Therefore, the SEK Group, which has always looked to the future with the determination of its pioneering spirit, would like to hereby advocate for the continued strength and validity of its ideals and its convictions.
En 1969 la Institución SEK expresó su sentido de propósito. Estas páginas, que recogen su expresión, constituyen el mejor homenaje a nuestro Ideario, en su 50º aniversario. ■
