A Peek into the Past June 1215 - The Magna Carta When King Richard the Lionheart died, his brother, John, took over the throne of England. King John’s rule was characterised by failure. Chiefly, he quarrelled with the Pope and lost an expensive war with France. In order to raise money he sold off church offices and imposed heavy taxes on the nobility. The Bishops were furious and called for action. The Barons took up arms, but instead of a civil war they used their position and power to draught the Magna Carta, which they forced King John to sign.

The Magna Carta was essentially a peace treaty between King John and his Barons. It guaranteed that the king would respect the feudal rights and privileges of the nobility; uphold the freedom of the church and maintain the nation’s laws. It put a limit on the king’s power and ensured that he too, would have to obey the law. It also stated that no man could be punished except by the lawful action of his peers. Eventually this would become trial by jury. Thus the Magna Carta is one of the cornerstones in the development of British democracy.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul Spiller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service Stroud and the surrounding valleys and

Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Thinking of advertising with us? Read what our customers say…………..

As Stroud Plumbing Limited, I have as a regular and longstanding advertiser in 'The Five Valleys Directory" always been satisfied with the help that I have received, and more importantly the response that I have gained from the magazine itself. I would have no reservation recommending the magazine to other small businesses (as long as they are not too similar to my own of course ) and feel sure that they would get a regular response as have I. The 'Five Valleys Directory' is currently one of my preferred advertising tools. With Thanks Andrew Barnard, Stroud Plumbing Thank you for putting together my advert each month as it is now my prime source of work. So keep up the good work!

18 FREE PAIN RESOLUTION PROGRAMME FOR FVD READERS! Stress Illness and Chronic Pain Recovery with Rachel Stevens SIRPA Practitioner and Alexander Technique Teacher Are you experiencing chronic pain? Have you been under stress? Taking pain killers but would rather not? Feeling depressed because of your pain? Fed up with having to say “no” to life? A pioneering approach to pain and stress related illness is being offered to people in the Five Valleys where the focus is on a resolution rather than management of your symptoms. This approach is based on the work of Dr John Sarno, an American medical doctor and author of ”The Mind Body Prescription” and “Healing Back Pain”. Dr Sarno realised that in order to resolve pain we need to address the underlying causes of it, many of which are stress related. By addressing our previous stresses and acknowledging the emotions connected with them we can release the stress and clear the pain. I have been working with people with musculoskeletal issues for 27 years and helping people using the Alexander Technique. When there are stress issues the SIRPA approach can offer the missing piece of the jigsaw and total pain resolution can occur. Having recently trained in this way of working I am seeking 4 chronic pain sufferers to participate in the Pain Resolution Programme and in return to be willing to be a case study for my work. You will need to: 1. Complete an in depth confidential questionnaire 2. Attend a 90 minutes session in Frampton on Severn 3. Attend 2 follow up 45 minute sessions 4. Complete short questionnaires during and after to monitor progress 5. Pay a refundable deposit of £ 40.00 which is returned at the end of the programme 5. Be open to change and trying out some new techniques at home The fee for the Programme is usually £ 235.00 but is being offered FREE to the first 4 suitable applicants. http://www.backcareandposture.co.uk/sirpa/ rachel@backcareandposture.co.uk

Skin Cancer-know the facts By Zoe Warner of Vanilla Moon

Sadly, cases of Skin Cancer have risen over the past five decade in the UK due to lack of knowledge and awareness on the subject. From people using oil when sunbathing to not knowing what to look for when it comes to skin cancer – more information about skin cancer and ways to prevent it should always be updated and readily available. Below we have highlighted some key facts and things to look out for if you feel you have had too much unprotected sun exposure in the past and want to be safer in sun in future.

What to look out for If in the past you have had a lot of exposure to the sun or other things such as sun beds, you will always want to make sure that any moles or warts that pop up randomly on your body are seen by a doctor. Most of the time these moles can be completely innocence but it is always best to get a biopsy to make sure it is not the start of anything more serious.

Prevention and Protection ALWAYS make sure you wear at least factor 30 SPF when out in the sun for long periods of time. Avoid the sun during its peak hours which usually run from 11am to 3pm and always remember to drink plenty of water. You can always enjoy the outdoors in summer without getting burnt, just remember to wear things like hats, sunglasses and even t-shirts are great for swimming if you find yourself tingly. There’s no need to compromise on fun in the sun, just do it in moderation to keep safe.

Alternatives If you simply must have that sun kissed glow, there are so many products available on the market today that will help you achieve this. Everything from gradual tanning moisturisers to salon sprays on tans; you can look tanned without putting your health at risk. On the other hand, what’s wrong with being pale and interesting? Not only can too much sun exposure give you skin cancer but it also ages skin cells tremendously and dries them out. Keep those wrinkles away and stay in the shade from now on. Always visit your GP if you are worried about anything or have any lumps or bumps that just appear or moles that you are worried about or moles that change shape, colour start to itch or worry you. Vanilla Moon are based in Eastcombe. For further details visit www.vanillamoon.biz

How long have you lived in the Five Valleys? I moved to Horsley from Bristol with my husband in 1997 when we fell in love with a beautiful cottage in Washpool. It needed a lot of work and we spent a year restoring it. I was pregnant at the time so it was all quite stressful! Living in Washpool with a very close community of people after life in the city was a wonderful experience being so close to nature with woods and streams all around us. After about ten years we moved to Frampton on Severn, another idyllic village but this time with wide open views and wonderful cycling possibilities! How did you become interested in helping people with pain? I had Alexander Technique lessons myself when I was in my early 20’s to help me with the stress of a new job – working with 16 year olds. I was a smoker with poor posture and asthma! My Alexander lessons were a revelation and taught me how to think about my body and my reactions to life, in a new way. I decided I wanted to spread the word and trained for 3 years in Devon to become an Alexander practitioner myself. For 27 years I have been offering this wonderful life-enhancing work to clients with neck and back problems/stress/breathing issues and postural problems.

23

I came across SIRPA (Stress Illness Recovery) and trained last year to offer this approach to clients. It complements the Alexander work very well as it goes a little deeper into our emotional patterns. What about your home life? I live with my husband John and 16 year old son Arran and our small lurcher Coco – the best dog in the world! Coco as a puppy with her sister and “friend!”

Any interests of hobbies? I love yoga and biodanza, vintage clothes, beach combing and crafts. A few years ago I did the Access Art and Design course at Stroud College which was wonderful. I get great joy from being creative – making my home look lovely or cooking a special meal or playing with a set of paints on watercolour paper. Any plans for the future? I get pleasure from helping people and would like to continue growing my business. I am planning some residential Retreats focusing on Restoration and Rejuvenation. One of the many joys of wedding planning is choosing your flowers. Natural simplicity, accompanied by a hand tied bouquet works wonderfully at a country church wedding setting. But if the look you require is one of sophistication, then less is more. Tall cala lilies teamed with a dramatic contrasting colour perhaps? Try swapping the traditional display pedestals for a large modern co cktail glass shaped container. A good florist will advise you of the possibilities.

Always make sure your florist can source your chosen flowers at the required time of year and that you have a contingency plan if you have selected blooms which are coming from overseas. If you are confident enough in your own floristry skills and don’t mind an early start, why not save on your budget by purchasing your flowers directly from your nearest flower market? And just so you don’t forget how lovely your wedding flowers were, remember to select a few buds for pressing before you toss your bouquet!

Going to the Dogs Are you a responsible pet owner?

Those of us who are dog-lovers know how important they are to our family. Dogs are great fun, brilliant companions and...heaps of responsibility.

your dog goes missing, he is returned to you. Each microchip has its own unique ID number plus the name of the dog’s owners and a contact number.

If you’re thinking of sharing your home with a dog here is some food for thought.

The tiny chip is inserted under the dog’s skin, between his shoulder blades.

Rehome Do consider rehoming a rescue. There are many lovely dogs just waiting for a new home. Good rescue centres assess new arrivals thoroughly and will be able to advise on the best fit for your family.

If the dog escapes, the police, a vet or a dog warden can scan him and reunite him with his family.

Neuter With so many abandoned dogs around don’t risk adding to the problem. Neutering prevents dogs reproducing. The operation is routine and carried out under general anaesthetic. As well as preventing unwanted puppies, neutering tends to produce calmer, less territorial behaviour in males. In females it avoids the messy inconvenience of ‘seasons’ and prevents womb infections, which can prove fatal. Male dogs can be neutered any time from four months old. Female dogs can be spayed before their first season though some people prefer to leave it until three months after. Discuss this with your vet. The average cost of the operation is £60 for male dogs and around £100 for females. The Dogs Trust runs a subsidised neutering campaign in several areas of the country. Check out their website. Microchip This is the best way to ensure that if

Train A well trained dog is a happy dog, and much nicer to live with than an untrained one! There are many good dog training clubs around. Choose one which encourages the use of kindness and positive reinforcement. The Kennel Club run the UK’s largest dog training programme, known as the Good Citizen Dog Scheme. It starts at puppy foundation level and from there you can progress through bronze, silver and gold awards. Exercise This is really important. A dog needs a chance to stretch his legs and explore his environment on a daily basis. Make sure you clean up any dog mess! If you have a very active dog, agility classes are an enjoyable activity for dog and owner. As a bonus you’ll meet new friends too. If you work, think about employing a dog-walker. Make sure they’re policechecked and insured, and ask for references. Be a responsible owner and your dog will thank you. Useful web addresses. www.dogstrust.org.uk www.thekennelclub.org.uk

Everybody’s got a book in them. We all have stories to tell, the pity is that some go unnoticed and unprinted. We’ve been printing books for some time now. In the past few years we’ve done them on local history, novels, illustrated children’s books, guides, and family books that are perfect for recording close family stories. These have been as few as 20 copies. With modern printing methods we can now print and produce just a few copies. These are ideal if you’d like to try your idea on the mainstream publishers, or just for those few exclusive people who you may like to write for. Not only can we print your book, but we can advise you on the best way to prepare it for print, or we can do the whole of the design and artwork for you from scratch. We advise on the best binding methods for the books as well as suggestions for marketing, and we can even build you a simple website for it too. Before we print we talk. So if you have a story to tell and you want to get it into print call me: Paul Davies, on 01452 300158 and lets make your book a reality.
