3 Hello everyone. Hopefully, by the time you read this the snow will have melted and we will be getting back to ‘normal’. Not that I don’t like to see the snow, I love the brightness of it and it can certainly lift the spirits more than the grey wet days we have been having . However, It does get a bit tedious if it stays around for too long! I did love this fantastic snowman (below) that some energetic people from Frampton-on-Severn decided to build and will be very sad when he starts to melt! We haven’t gone overboard on ‘Valentines Day’ in this edition but there are some great ideas for gifts on page 24 if your true love is a keen gardener. If gardening is not his/her passion then why not treat them to a lovely massage or beauty treatment from holistic beauty therapist’s Vanilla Moon (page 16). You can find out more about Vanilla Moon’s owner Zoe Warner on our People Profile pages (20/21). Whatever you do, have a happy, warm Valentine’s day!

Where were you born? I was born in Amersham, Buckinghamshire. When I was 3 months old we moved to Germany for 3 months and then returned to Marlow, Bucks. My earliest memory was escaping across the road from my nursery school to my home. I was an escapologist from an early age. I climbed up a ladder and onto the roof of the house when I was only 18 months old, much to my father’s surprise and dismay! When I was 8 we emigrated to Australia. We arrived in Sydney, which was very multi-cultural. Whilst my parents were opening their bank account I set out on my next great escape into an adjacent department store and the pet shop on the top floor. I was trying to buy a parrot when I was re-captured by my parents. After that we moved to Moss Vale NSW, a little village in the Outback. My father was an air conditioning engineer, It was very hot and barren in the Outback and full of poisonous snakes and spiders. The house was on stilts and I used to go underneath and capture the spiders including Sydney red backs in jars which I brought in the house. They didn’t stay there long! Whilst in Moss Vale, we were friends with a family from Tewkesbury. We returned to Stokencurch, England and visited them in Tewkesbury and decided we would like to live in the same area. My father got a job at GCHQ and I attended Tewkesbury comprehensive school until I was 16. What did you do after you left school? I went to work at National Westminster Bank but left after 6 months as I found it too boring. I trained as a hairdresser and beautician and then at 19 I decided to go travelling on my own and got a summer job as a nanny in St Tropez. I visited Cannes and Grenoble, travelled through France and Germany by train and went north to visit the Isle of Sylt in Germany where my aunt and uncle had a hotel on the island. I particularly remember being there when the Berlin wall came down, everyone was celebrating and having great parties. On return to England I carried on hairdressing and I met my husband, a soldier. We got married and moved to Osnabruck, Germany where my first daughter Jeni was born. We were posted to Cyprus and my second daughter Ellie and my son Thomas were born there.

(and other trivia)

The winds of change Well, how did you find 2012? The year seemed to oscillate violently from beginning to end. There was even a suggestion of drought at the outset which was certainly not representative of the conditions we experienced towards the end. Hurricane Sandy kept the United States on full alert and the floods we experienced in the UK yet again demonstrated the continuing volatility of our weather. Climate change is very much a reality and with us, even if it is not ‘global warming’. As I write we are experiencing another evening of snow showers and freezing roads-conditions which we never seem able to deal with as well as the continentals, who carry on business as usual. Anyway, last year, as I am sure many of you will have noticed (I didn’t) the EU won the Nobel Peace Prize for six decades of tireless work in pursuit of European Unity. In the UK we seem to have spent the same period as full-time Eurosceptics. Isn’t it time we had a referendum and made a decision on the subject once and for all? My personal view is there is nothing wrong with a Common Market as long as it gives incentives to it’s individual members to seek selfsufficiency in food production. Does it? I don’t believe so? I do know that the fisheries sub-committee has recommended that the EU change our Common Fisheries Policy to stop the practice of throwing back surplus dead fish into the ocean as well as using quotas to try and preserve and increase fish stocks. About time! Let us hope the main body have the common sense to adopt their recommendations. Luckily for us the ancient Maya prophecy that the world would end on 21st December 2012 due to an ecological disaster was premature. We may have several more years to try to achieve that end. Well, there must be something to look forward to, and of course there is-Valentines Day! To quote the words of Joan Armatrading “In these times everyone needs love”! Who said I wasn’t a romantic?!! Garden View This month - Love is in the air!

What do you buy the gardener in your life for Valentine’s Day? Flowers are no good...we have gardens full of the things, and most of the gardeners I know, myself included, prefer our plants living and breathing in their natural environment. The non-green-fingered venture into dangerous territory when they try to buy plants. There are so many variables. The plant not only has to suit the taste of the gardener in question but satisfy trickier issues such as whether it’s too invasive; whether it will suit the soil and even whether it might poison the gardener’s dog or worse, children! It’s a thorny issue (pardon the pun) so I’ve put together a few horticultural Valentine suggestions which should render your favourite gardener weak at the knees. Don’t buy a sweatshirt which declares we’re ‘head-gardener. They’re the height of naff and anyway, we have plenty of old, comfy clothes which do the job. However, if you can find one, we would love a tough tunic or apron-like affair, preferably thorn-proof, and with lots of deep pockets so our secateurs don’t fall out! Then there are wellies. Gardening folk love wellies. We prefer something with a thick sole but there’s so much choice out there! I love bright and cheerful wellies but for the ultimate in warmth and breathability I can recommend a proper Goretex pair...sheer luxury, with a price tag to match!

A bunch of long-stemmed red roses will set you back about £40 minimum and last but a few days. For a similar price you can buy the gardener in your life Felco secateurs (with Valentine red handles) and they’ll last forever. I know which I’d prefer. Garden trugs are so practical. Most gardeners I know would be delighted to receive one. The trug is a great gift but even better when filled with a few gardening goodies such as packets of seed, water retaining granules, plant food etc. You could add some hand tools too, such as a trowel and a fork. Ideally they’ll be stainless steel and have long handles for ease of use. Hot drinks don’t remain hot for long outside, even on a warm day. I’ve lost count of the number of cold cups of tea I’ve drunk! The canny Valentine who gave me an insulated mug with a lid could expect a very warm reception indeed. Finally, don’t forget gardening vouchers. Often we’ll spot the perfect plant or gardening accessory when we’re strapped for cash so vouchers are a perfect gift to save for a rainy day...and gardeners love rainy days, Valentine’s or not.

A proper long-necked watering can, with a brass rose will earn you Valentine brownie points. Don’t go too large because they’re heavy when full. 3-4 litres is about the right size.

CPRE Gloucestershire announces 2013 Awards CPRE Gloucestershire launched its 2013 Awards this week. The Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) Gloucestershire Awards celebrate outstanding projects benefiting people and the environment. Last year a gas pipeline project, bridge repair, canal restoration, skills centre for a commercial orchard, Roman heritAbove: The Wallbridge Project in Stroud age visitor centre and the renovation of a tithe barn for commercial use were all recognised. In previous years, village stores, homes, museums, village halls and townscapes have also received awards. What all have in common is they improve the rural environment, demonstrate sustainability and are visible from public places so everyone can appreciate them. CPRE Gloucestershire Chair, Charlie Watson, said: “The awards are not a competition. They acknowledge projects creating a sustainable economy, supporting the environment and enhancing the social life of the countryside. These Awards are about people and how they live: The countryside cannot and should not be wrapped up in cotton wool, change is inevitable but it should be for the better. CPRE Gloucestershire’s contribution is to help recognise such change by celebrating the standard to which all environmental change should aspire.” The CPRE Gloucestershire Awards were launched in 2007. Since then 28 schemes have received awards and awareness of the Awards programme is growing. Anyone can nominate a project for the awards, whether it’s their project or one they admire. All details are on the CPRE Gloucestershire Website: and click the Awards

The 2013 Awards programme is now open and nominations are welcomed. Award recipients will be announced at a special CPRE Gloucestershire event in October.

Real Time Information Reporting The way small businesses run their payroll is changing thanks to a new HRMC initiative being rolled out from April 2013.

April Real time starts in s do April Shower

Are you covered?

From April 2013 employers must report PAYE in real time. Are you ready? We can help.

From April if you employ people, you’ll have to change the way you run your payroll. Rather than reporting payments and deductions just once a year, from April 2013 a business must file all payroll details with HRMC online, in advance of every payment made.

The traditional payroll system was set up in 1944. HMRC say Real Time will 01285 652128 bring PAYE into the 21st century, making it easier for employers and pension providers to operate, and HMRC to administer. They say it will also make PAYE deductions more accurate for individuals; help people receive the benefits they are entitled to and support the Government’s new Universal Credit being introduced in October this year. It probably will make running a payroll easier but making the move to Real Time is another red tape headache to be tackled as soon as possible. The easiest way to adapt to Real Time Reporting is by using good payroll software that will do much of the work automatically. For those not using software, it will certainly be more difficult and time consuming and we have seen more small companies using our payroll services and anticipate others taking the decision to do so. Probably the most important thing that a business can do is to tidy up its payroll data and review its payroll procedures. Make sure employee data is accurate, and your procedures enable you to meet the new rules. Don’t panic about the change. Accountants are there to help. All you have to do is pick up the phone.

fine words from the minister

you the above to beyou turned into a housing estate?

1.Greenfields act as natural attenuators to water flow thus elevating flooding. Concrete, bricks & mortar will not do this.

2.Traffic, air, light and noise pollution will all increase if development takes place. 3.Loss of wildlife habitat. Badgers, Bats, Owls and many other species will be severely disrupted.

4.Loss of tourist amenity; Visitors come to see Laurie Lee’s valley not a housing estate. 5.Within the setting of an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. 6.This site is not well suited for “Affordable” housing. Better, more sustainable sites have been identified by Stroud District Council.
