FROM THE DIRECTOR

W

elcome to Missouri for a Bianchi Cup that’s certain to be unlike any other. The Bianchi Cup celebrates the best of the best in NRA Action Pistol. That’s even more the case this year as we continue the winning format of the championship in use for over 30 years. In partnership with our corporate sponsors, we’ve also put in place other innovations intended to make the Bianchi Cup more exciting, competitive, and compelling. One thing that hasn’t changed is support from MidwayUSA, our Title Sponsor. Without the generous support of all our sponsors, the Bianchi Cup as it is today would not exist. NRA continues to work with our competitors and sponsors to conduct a truly world-class shooting event. We are very proud of these efforts. We thank our loyal competitors, you are the reason the shooting sports are more popular then ever. Enjoy the 2014 MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup.

SCOUTING OUT MID–MISSOURI

C

olumbia is the fifth-largest city in Missouri, and the largest city in Mid-Missouri. With a population of 108,500 as of the 2010 Census, it is the principal municipality of the Columbia Metropolitan Area, a region of 164,283 residents. The city serves as the county seat of Boone County and as the location of the University of Missouri. The college town is known by the nicknames "The Athens of Missouri," "College Town USA," and "CoMO."

University of Missouri

Over half of Columbians possess a bachelor's degree and over a quarter hold graduate degrees, making it the thirteenth most highly educated municipality in the United States. Columbia was settled in Pre-Columbian times by the mound-building Mississippian culture of Native Americans. In 1818, a group of settlers incorporated under the Smithton Land Company purchased over 2,000 acres and established the village of Smithton near present-day downtown Columbia. In 1821, the settlers moved and re-named the settlement Columbia—a poetic name for the United States. The founding of the University of Missouri in 1839 established the city as a center of education and research. Two other institutions of higher education, Stephens College in 1833 and Columbia College in 1851, were also established within the city.

The Blue Note

Located among small tributary valleys of the Missouri River, Columbia is roughly equidistant from St. Louis and Kansas City. Today, Columbia has a highly diversified economy, and is often ranked high for its business atmosphere. Never a strong center of industry and manufacturing, the city's economic base relies on the education, medical, technology and insurance industries. Studies consistently rank Columbia as a top city in which to live for educational facilities, health care, technological savvy, economic growth, cultural opportunities and cost of living. The city has been ranked as high as the second-best place to live in the United States by Money Magazine's annual list. Residents of Columbia are usually described as "Columbians."

Transportation to and from the venue is most easily done by automobile. Parking is extremely limited at Green Valley, so the MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup Staff encourages competitors and spectators alike to car pool as much as possible. Follow signage and attendants to proper parking areas.

There are two major airports nearby: Lambert International in St. Louis and Kansas City International, in Kansas City. Both are about 120 miles from Columbia. Columbia Regional Airport is located at 11300 S. Airport Rd., Columbia, Missouri 65201. For further information on interstate transportation of firearms see www.nraila.org. For Airline Transportation of firearms see www.tsa.gov, as well as the web site for the airlines you are traveling. The Holiday Inn Executive Center in Downtown Columbia is the Official Hotel of the MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup. The Bianchi Cup HQ Office is located here, as well as the Western BBQ on Friday night, and the Awards Ceremony on Saturday night. The Holiday Inn Executive Center offers a favorable rate for Bianchi Cup attendees. Be sure to mention your affiliation while making your reservation. Competitors, spectators, and press should make sure to contact the hotel of your choosing as early as possible, as other events in the Columbia area during Memorial day weekend tend to make accommodations tight in the area at that time. For Toll Free Reservations call: 1-800-HOLIDAY or call direct at 573-445-8531. For Hotel reservations go to this web site: www.holidaycolumbia.com

Be sure to allow yourself ample time to get to and from the range. The Green Valley Rifle & Pistol Club’s Hallsville facility is located about 20 minutes from the Holiday Inn Executive Center. Please be mindful of yourself and others during your Bianchi Cup experience.

MIDWAYUSA & NRA BIANCHI CUP CHAMPIONS RECEIVE TROPHIES 2013 Bianchi Cup’s overall and sub-division winners presented with awards

O By Kyle Jillson

n the morning of Saturday May 25, after the flurry of this year's MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup title race had died down, the 2013 champions were presented with their silver cup trophies. Doug Koenig may have won the overall title, but there were also champions in each of the Bianchi Cup's sub-divisions: Metallic, Production, Ladies, Junior, Senior and Grand Senior.

The 2013 Bianchi Cup Champions

One by one the top shooters were announced to the applause of the crowd and were handed their reward by Larry and Brenda Potterfield of title sponsor MidwayUSA. But these champions - some new, some returning - did not have long to bask in the glory of their triumphs. Celebrations would be put on hold until the official awards ceremony later that night as the top shooters were suited up for a little more shooting in the Colt Speed Event.

MEET THE NEW BIANCHI MATCH DIRECTOR PAT COOPER Plinking a .22 at instructor class leads to top job at the Bianchi Cup By John Parker

The NRA is pleased to announce that Mrs. Pat Cooper has been named Match Director of the 2014 MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup. Cooper will be taking over for long-time Match Director Larry Meade. With the Bianchi Cup reaching unprecedented heights in the last few years in terms of growth, Cooper has a tough job ahead of her. We asked Pat to write how she got to the top job at the World’s most prestigious pistol championship. Outgoing M.D. Larry Meade

My journey to the MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup began many years ago when I attended a Ladies Gun Safety class, run by David Wyatt of the Missouri Department of Conservation. Not knowing anything about handguns or shooting, David had me hooked after shooting about 15 rounds from a .22. After completing phase one and phase two of the Ladies Gun Safety Classes, I had the bug and David asked me if I wanted to become an instructor, so that I could share my passion with other ladies. My dear friend and fellow instructor Judy Farnsworth Cooper leading staff as Deputy Match DIrector in 2013 40

Cooper receiving a service award in 2013

brought me to the Bianchi Cup in 1999, 16 years ago, to help her on the Barricades Range. After my first year at the Bianchi Cup, I was hooked. Through the years, I have been a Range Officer and Chief Range Officer of the Barricade Event, Range Director and Deputy Match Director. The friendships that I have been able to develop and foster through the years of being a member of the Bianchi Cup family have truly been life changing. The people that you have the opportunity to meet and work with at the Bianchi Cup are amazing. World-Class competitors from all over the world gather in Columbia, Missouri once a year and you have the opportunity to watch and learn from them. Match staff that give their time to ensure a safe and fair competition are the best there is. Please come see me out on the range!

Thanks to Pat for working with NRA to produce this article, and all her help with the match. Be sure to say Hi to Pat at the range!

MIDWAYUSA & NRA BIANCHI CUP: HISTORY OF THE MATCH The tournament that transformed competitive shooting from a simple pastime into a professional sport

T by

John Parker & Damien Orsinger

he Bianchi Cup is widely considered the gold standard in action shooting competition. 1979 was the first year the match was held at the Chapman Training Academy. The brainchild of Ray Chapman and famous holster maker, Major General of the California National Guard, law enforcement officer and Hollywood cowboy John Bianchi. While discussing pistol competitions that were currently being held across the country, John and Ray realized that there wasn’t a competition that had a mix of IPSC, Police Pistol Combat and NRA Conventional Bullseye shooting styles. This discussion was the birth of the first ever Bianchi Cup!

“Tombstone” target or “Bianchi” target. This eventually changed to the NRA D-1 target and ultimately the NRA AP-1 target. Competitor’s fire from 10, 15, 25 and 50 yard distances firing multiple shots at each target as well as one string of “weak” had only (non-dominant hand) firing. All of which is done while drawing from a holster in “Action” style.

Over 35 years of Bianchi Cup history can be found in the back woods of Hallsville, Missouri, a small suburb of Columbia, Missouri. The Green Valley Rifle & Pistol Club, formerly the Chapman Training Academy, was named after Ray Chapman. Chapman was a WWII Marine Vet, Law Enforcement Officer and IPSC champion of the 70’s. Ray worked with John Bianchi on the Cup from the beginning. To great sadness, Ray passed away in 2008, leaving behind a legacy of top-level instruction to law enforcement, the military and competitive shooters alike. He had a passion for competitive shooting and loved to share it with others. His presence at the Bianchi Cup is missed by many.

The third event is the Falling Plate Event. Competitors fire at a plate rack which holds six 8” circular steel targets (plates) 4’ off of the ground and 1’ apart edge to edge. The competitor fires from distances of 10, 15, 20 and 25 yards. Times are 6, 7, 8 and 9 seconds respectively.

After much discussion, the first four courses of fire were developed in what would eventually be known as the sport of “NRA Action Pistol”. Comprised of four events, the Bianchi Cup was a revolutionary competition that changed the scope of competition shooting as it had been known. The four events have the distinction of extreme longevity, unchanged for decades. The first of the four events is the Practical Event. Competitors fire at two targets, six feet from the top edge of the target to the ground and three feet apart edge to edge using what was then called a 42

2014 BIANCHI CUP

The second event is the Barricade Event. Competitors again fire at 2 targets set at the same height and distance apart as the Practical Event, except you are now firing from behind a barricade or “cover”, and distances are 10, 15, 20 and 35 yards. Times are 5 seconds, 6 seconds, 7 seconds and 8 seconds respectively.

The final and most dynamic event…and the only one of its kind in all of the competitive pistol shooting sports is….The Moving Target Event: Competitors fire at a “Tombstone” target, which moves 60’ from right to left and left to right at a whopping 10’ per second! Competitors fire six shots at this moving target or “Running Man” target from 10, 15, 20 and 25 yards. There are no makeup shots in NRA Action Pistol and or the Bianchi Cup. Police, military, and top-level competitive shooters all have to make every shot count. This is why the scoring in NRA Action Pistol is so demanding. If you want to be a part of history in 2014 as well as watch some of the best shooters in the world, come join us at the 35th 2014 MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup, where the world’s foremost competitors vie for the most lucrative awards schedule in all of the shooting sports. essie Duff is one of the biggest names in the shooting sports. From her duties as captain of Team Taurus to her television work with the NRA, Duff gives her all both on and off the firing line. She recently added to her accolades in the former by winning her third Ladies Champion title at the 35th Annual MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup in Columbia, Missouri. We can all see Jessie is a great shot, but Barb Barid of Women's Outdoor News and Shooting Sports USA recently tried to dig deeper to shed some light on her secrets. And there's no better place to start than the tools she brings to the range. So, Jessie, what's in your range bag? Not only is she an accomplished professional competitor, she also represents firearm owners as an advocate for the Second Amendment on national cable television. Jessie Duff and her husband, Matt, co-host the popular “NRA All-Access” TV show on the Outdoor Channel. Jessie remarked, “I have taken a stance to help promote the Second Amendment. This is something that I feel very strongly about, and will do whatever I can to contribute.” As Team Captain for Taurus, Jessie shoots a PT 1911 and also works with the 24/7. Her other sponsors include Leupold, Hornady, Benelli, Taran Tactical Innovations, Safariland, Atlanta Arms & Ammo and GT Targets. So, we had to know: What does she pack in her range bag? Jessie broke it down into two categories.

THE ESSENTIALS 1. Pistol and back up with at least five magazines. 2. Oakley eyewear with assorted lens colors. 3. Hearing protection. “I wear molded earplugs instead of ear muffs, just because I feel like I get more sound cancellation with plugs.” 4. Pact timer for training sessions. 5. Enough spare parts, cleaning equipment and tools to be able to fix any small issue that might arise on the range. 6. ProGrip.

THE IMPORTANT STUFF 1. A handwritten inspirational note from my husband. 2. A card from my parents that they gave to me afterI won one of my first major championships. 3. A note I wrote with a few verses that help keep me grounded and focused, orto help in situations I’ve faced in competition. Jessie recently won her third Ladies Champion title at this year's 35th Annual MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup. Prior to the tournament, she joined pro competition shooters Rob Leatham, Doug Koenig, Mickey Fowler, Rob Vadasz, Kyle Schmidt and Carl Bernosky to instruct a Bianchi Clinic featuring tips on how to shoot the various stages of the match.

WORLD’S BEST SHOOTERS TEACH TIPS AND TRICKS AT BIANCHI CUP PRO-CLINIC World's best action pistol shooters host hands-on clinic at NRA National Action Pistol Championships

T

By Kyle Jillson

his past Monday morning a couple dozen Bianchi Cup competitors got a top flight education in action pistol from some of the best shooters in the world. Sure the Bianchi Cup Pro-Shooter Clinic required attendees to squeeze out a couple extra vacation days, but it was more than worth it to work with the likes of Rob Leatham, Jessie Duff, Doug Koenig, Mickey Fowler, Rob Vadasz, Kyle Schmidt and Carl Bernosky.

Instructors were pleased with clinic attendance

Action pistol is one of the most exciting shooting sports to watch because of its dynamic events. But those very events also make it extremely challenging to master. With all the variation in movement and time limits, it’s a wonder that the top shooters manage to get such great scores. Top-level skills aren’t conjured through black magic, but they come from hours and hours of rigorous practice. You can imagine the treat these clinic attendees were in for when Rob Leatham, an instructor himself, gathered a few of his friends and decided to teach their decades of tips and tricks just before this year’s Bianchi Cup. COMPETE.NRA.ORG

The weather wasn’t very cooperative as it rained intermittently throughout the day, but the pro-shooters were eager to teach and the attendees were eager to learn so everyone stuck it out - rain or shine. After a brief introduction of the day’s instructors, Leatham and co. demonstrated the course of fire for each Bianchi Cup event before splitting the crowd into smaller groups. The smaller groups rotated between events where different pro-shooters were stationed for handson instructing on leading, stance, preparation, and lots more; you name it and they covered it. At the events, Kyle Schmidt and Doug Koenig respectively took the upper and lower Moving Target ranges, Mickey Fowler instructed at Practical, Jessie Duff at Barricade and Rob Leatham at Falling Plate. No doubt the entire group could have stayed there all day, or even all week, but the Bianchi Cup was drawing closer and the clinic came to an end a few hours later. Clinic attendees were excited to try their new skills once shots were for record and see how much their game had improved. Just how much did the clinic help? We’ll find out when the award ceremony rolls around Saturday evening.

F

or all you action pistol shooters out there looking to improve your game, free up an extra day at this year's MidwayUSA & NRA Bianchi Cup. Reading about tips and tricks in magazines or watching instructional YouTube videos can only get you so far. To truly get better you'll need hands-on practice. And that's exactly what you'll get at the Bianchi Cup's Competitor Clinic, taught by the world's best action pistol shooters. Doug Koenig instructing at the 2013 clinic

After a great turnout for last year's inaugural clinic, the best of the best in action pistol shooting are returning for another day of personal instruction on not only the basics of action pistol shooting, but maximizing your scores in all four of the Bianchi Cup's events. Now, in order to get all these pro shooters together for an entire day, the clinic is being held Monday May 19, directly before this year's May 21-24 Bianchi Cup. You might need to amend your travel plans if you were already planning to attend the world's premier action pistol match, but it'll all be worth it when you see the difference a couple days later in the thick of the match. There are only enough slots for the first forty-five shooters to sign up, so email BianchiCup@nrahq.org and pay the $50 entry fee to reserve your spot. We'll bring you more details about the clinic soon, but make sure you register ASAP.
