Self-Contained Offshore Lighthouse When an oilfield is at the end of its productive life, the installations must be removed. The installations are complex, and must be removed piece by piece. As parts and equipment are removed, it becomes increasingly challenging to mark the installations as a hazard to passing ships.

SCOL is a navigational aid especially designed for the purpose of marking unmanned and unpowered installa­tions in the North Sea. Units can be placed on remaining elements during the different stages of dismantling. The units consist of a lamp and a radar beacon powered by twelve solar panels, and they are designed to withstand the harsh conditions of the North Sea for years without service. Each unit also contains a battery bank that will ensure continuous operation throughout the dark winter months in the North Sea.

A circular base plate with a centered pole is ­welded to the installation, and the SCOL can then be lifted onto the base plate place using a helicopter or crane. The lifting set consists of a wire with a ball that does not need handling when installing or replacing the unit. This greatly simplifies and reduces the cost of maintenance and service. The SCOL is omnidirectional, which makes installation considerably easier.
