Small sectional sofas is definitely very popular among a lot of people. One of the reasons for this is the fact that they will help you to make your small living space to look cozy and comfortable without appearing tiny and cramped. This makes the small sectional sofas an excellent option for people that doesn’t have much space in their living rooms. So, if you have a rather small living room, but still want a sectional sofa, you would be pleased to know that sectional sofas come in smaller sizes as well, catering for everyone’s needs. Saving you some space if you don’t have plenty of space to begin with. If you have a living room that is not too spacious, you should probably not consider a sectional sofa that consists of more than 3- or 4-pieces. Typically a 3-piece sectional sofa is a good starting place when you start shopping around. You are probably wondering what a 3-piece sectional sofa consists of? Generally a small 3-piece sectional sofa are simply a sofa or a loveseat, combined with one or two chairs. The great thing about sectional sofas is the fact that you have the ability to place them however you would prefer, adding a personal touch to your living room. Centrally locating your sofa pieces within your living room could make the area feel more spacious while offering proper seating for conversation and intimacy. The size of your sectional sofa will depend on the size of your living room, that is why it is important to take measurements before purchasing, ensuring your sofa pieces would easily fit into your small living area without overpowering it. The measurements of small scale sectional sofas ranges from about 120 – 130” wide and ends at about 157” wide. A wise choice would be to find a sofa with components that are sold seperately,

enabling you to add some pieces or knock off a few pieces to accommodate your small space. Also allowing you to fill space efficiently while giving you many different looks to choose from. A small sofa usually measures about 72” or smaller and their matching chairs are measured around 24” each, adding up to 120” wide. A loveseat would be around 63” with chairs of about 31.5” wide, adding up to 126”. If you have more space available you could just add another chair to your set. The idea of choosing particular loose pieces for your small sectional sofa set not only allows you to create your desired size sofa set, but also allows you to mix and match, creating your own unique style and look. Especially nowadays with the new look of matching stripes, floral patterns and plain colors together. You will also have to choose between a variety of fabrics. Sofas come in leather, suede, microfiber or cloth, giving you a variety of looks, designs and price ranges to choose from. The great thing about small sectional sofas is that it doesn’t always have to be big to offer you some great versatility.

One of the common problems that most people have when trying to decorate a room is to determine where the focal point is. In some rooms, the focal point may be quite obvious, but for others there may be a bit of confusion or uncertainty. Rooms benefit from emphasizing focal points. Focal points create a sense of balance and unity within a room. They also serve to anchor the room to prevent your eyes from bouncing from wall to wall. If a room just doesn’t feel right, there’s a good possibility that it’s lacking some sort of a focal point. The solution may be as simple as accenting an existing focal point or creating one within the room.

the usual focus in most kitchens. A variety of ceramic tiles can be used in this area to create added visual interest. Stainless steel is probably one of the most popular finishes that can also be used to create a strong visual effect in the kitchen. Since the focal point in bedrooms is usually the bed, it’s a good idea to use attractive bedding. To create more interest, add a variety of throw cushions. An ornate headboard or canopy may also accentuate the area. If your headboard lacks ornamentation and has cleaner, simpler lines, you might want to consider adding an interesting group of prints above the bed for extra impact. Matching end tables with lamps will make the bed appear wider, further emphasizing the grandness of the bed.

When deciding which feature to make the focal point of your room, the fireplace is a natural choice due to its size and its (usual) central placement in the layout of the room. Many fireplaces already feature gorgeous woodwork and masonry that make them a dramatic and beautiful without having to do much to them at all. Others, on the other hand, could use a little help. A large piece of art hung above the mantel, or propped on the mantelpiece is a great way to further enhance a fireplace. It’s also a good idea to keep your accessories around the fireplace simple. If you do not have a fireplace, focus on something as simple as a large window with a great view. You can also create your own focal point by using a dramatic piece of furniture, bookcase or a large piece of art that immediately draws your eye to the object when you enter the room. Once you’ve established this focal point, arrange your furniture so that everyone that is sitting in the room can appreciate it. In the dining room, emphasis should be placed on the dining room set itself. Depending on the placement of furniture, it could also be something like a dramatic hutch or a buffet with a large piece of artwork or mirror placed above it. Just as wall color is the backdrop for most rooms, cabinetry is the backdrop for every kitchen, making a window or area above a range

Most bathrooms don’t necessarily have focal points, unless you’re fortunate enough to have a custom-designed surround or a state-of-the-art bathtub. The key to decorating bathrooms is to create an overall feel. You can incorporate certain fixtures or mirrors that grab attention or add decorative accent pieces that will enhance the look of the room.

Take advantage of some great decorating books and magazines to assist you with experimenting with ways to create impact in each of your rooms by using texture, color and objects. The combination will add dimension, character and visual interest to your entire home. E-mail your decorating questions and photos to designers@kohon.ca or visit website www.kohon.ca.

some often overlooked benefits When you purchase a garden fountain or garden waterfall you are not only enhancing the look of your garden but providing other benefits for yourself and your visitors. Some benefits a garden fountain will bring, that are often overlooked, include stress relief, alleviation of sound and a source of drinking water for your pets. If you place a fountain in your home it will also help to keep the air humid. Decorative Effects Fountains and waterfalls can be used both in the garden and inside your home. A fountain can be especially welcoming in the foyer of an office, doctor’s office or other waiting room. In your home it can serve as a lovely piece of art and a center piece for your entrance hall or room. Stress Relief When you are stressed there is nothing better than to sit in the garden and listen to the peaceful sounds of running water. If you practice meditation a higher sense of calm and peace can be achieved by listening to these lovely sounds. When you are choosing a suitable fountain choose one that gives a soft sound of running water rather than harsh sounds of splashing. You will need to look for fountain that has an even flow and only a short fall of water. If it has an adjustable pump this can be used to tune the water flow to the desired speed and sounds.

Wall Fountains Wall fountains can be purchased in horizontal and vertical designs. You will need to decide which one will suit the dimensions of your room. A tall vertical fountain will look better in a room with a high ceiling but a horizontal fountain will look better in a room with a long wide wall. If you place a horizontal fountain in a room with a high ceiling it will look much smaller than it really is. You also need to look at the width especially if you are placing the fountain in a corridor or walkway. To see how fountain will look once it is placed on the wall find out the size of the fountain you’re thinking of purchasing then measure is out on the wall where you intend to hang in. You could do this by placing tape or tracing the outlines on the wall or stick thumb tacks where the corners would be. Stand back and see how it looks. Tabletop Fountains When you are buying a tabletop fountain decide where it will go before you buy to make sure you do not purchase one that is too big. You could place an object of the same size as the intended fountain to see if it looks good in the chosen location. Some tabletop fountains can vary in height as they use natural stones that are not all the same size so make sure you allow for this randomness when you are purchasing your fountain.

Sound Alleviation Many people forget that if you live in an area that has harsh outside noises the soft sounds of running water can help to cover up these annoying sounds. Close to a busy street the noise from traffic can be masked by these soft sounds and placing a waterfall in a busy waiting room can cover up distracting noise.

Outdoor Floor Fountains When you are buying an outdoor fountain made sure that the width is suitable for where you are intending to place it. If it will be placed on a patio or under an arbor you would need to make sure that the high is suitable. You could try stacking boxes in the chosen location to make sure there is a comfortable fit and it will look good.

Humidification If your home is dry a fountain or waterfall can act as a natural humidifier and add moisture to the atmosphere. Mechanical humidifiers are noisy from the constant movement of the fan and they also encourage molds and mildew use. A water fountain or waterfall is not subject to the growth of these organisms and the sound of running water is much more pleasing than the sound of a noisy fan. In addition to making the home more pleasant for you it also is good for your indoor plants, especially moisture loving plants like ferns.

Conclusion A fountain is a lovely addition to your garden or to your home. As long as you do your homework before you purchase your fountain and make sure that the one you buy is suitable for your chosen location you cannot fail to be pleased with your purchase.

Drinking Source for Pets Your pets will love the constant source running water and will much prefer drinking from the fountain than from their own bowls. Just make sure you do not add any chemicals to the water if you have pets. Choosing A Garden Fountain or Waterfall Garden fountains and waterfalls can be purchased as wall fountains, tabletop fountains and outdoor floor fountains.

However fascinating and beautiful the rafflesia arnoldi may be, it is also called “corpse flower” and really reeks, the latter to attract flies for pollination. Once in a while, owners realize the need to have changes to improve their homes. For people who want to enhance their kitchen, upgrading the kitchen faucet is the most probable option. A reliable faucet would come in handy for different chores in your kitchen. As the sink is the most used fixture in the kitchen, going out of your way to have those extra features will never be futile. Improving the faucet you have will definitely change your kitchen routine. Aside from being practical, changing it can also have a huge impact on the style a kitchen has. Replacing the faucet is quite affordable but replacing the sink altogether is a lot more expensive. That may need more than the do-it-yourself steps and you might end up hiring someone else to do the job for you. If changing the sink will take a longer time, there is no need to worry because changing the faucet will do a lot. The first thing you have to consider is the number of holes mounted in your existing sink. The last thing you want to happen is to buy a set only to find out that it does not fit in your sink. Next, consider the size and depth of the sink so that choosing a fitting faucet would be easy when it is time for you to purchase one. It should not overwhelm your kitchen sink. Most people are satisfied by just looking at the features of a faucet but most of the time, they end up with too high or too low faucets or spouts that are too short to be used. Other mounting holes are needed for other accessories that go with the faucet such as soap

and lotion dispenser, sprayer and hot water dispenser. There are many types of kitchen faucets. There are single-handed ones and double-handled ones. It is most ideal to evaluate the kitchen lifestyle of the house so that the kitchen faucet would be most suitable for your kitchen. Choosing between a single-handle and a two-handle faucet is a matter of personal preference. The differences lie on the temperature and water flow adjustment. The single-handled one basically allows easy manageability. On the other hand, a twohandled one allows more precise adjustments to both the temperature and water flow. Others can be pulled out and can be switched to regular water flow to spray with a touch of a button. Wall mount faucets, as the name suggests, require no deck holes. Holes will be mounted to the wall directly above the sink. All of these kitchen faucet kinds and styles have their own uses and practicality and it is all up to the kitchen dweller which is found most convenient of all. Lastly, do not forget to match it with the sink color. There are different finishes and having the perfect one may just top off your kitchen style. Chrome, polished brass, brushed Nickel, Weathered Copper, French Bronze, Pewter, White, Almond and Platinum are only some of the finish options. Consideration would depend on your current kitchen theme and color palette your kitchen has. Building your own pergola is a project many do-it-yourselfers can do themselves. This project can be built without plans. But to eliminate all the guess work, trying to design it yourself, you should look for step by step plans with illustrations, and a material list. There are many sites that offer free plans. If you can’t find what you need with free ones, consider buying some, most are very affordable and they will eliminate a lot of work. Plans will come with a material list, and this is a great way to estimate what the project will cost before you build. Of course, building it yourself will save you money, but is it possible to do it yourself? If you are capable of using a jigsaw, more than likely, yes. It is not a complicated structure. Square and rectangle designs are the easiest to build. This project can be done in one or two weekends. With the help of some friends this can be a fun weekend project.

the spot to build, measure and find the appropriate plans. Study the plans, and material list, make sure you understand the process of building it. Study the material list and all the cuts you will be making. Once you get familiar with the design, and the building steps, you are ready to begin. If you feel this project is beyond your carpentry skills, consider hiring a contractor. Once you have the plans you like, and the material, you can show them to different contractors to get some bids for the project Every city has different laws when building new structures. Make sure you check with your local building department before beginning any constructions. You might need a permit, you might not, check your zoning regulations for any requirements. Do your research when choosing the lumber. Pressure treated wood is great to prevent rot and decay. Cedar and redwood is another good choice, it is more expensive, but it is nicer and it will last for many years. If any digging is required, make sure to take caution with any water, telephone, or electrical lines that might be underground. Find out the locations of these lines to avoid any problems, or injury. Save money by building it yourself. If you are thinking of building just a basic design, such as a square or rectangle shape, you should consider building it yourself. This design is very basic and simple to build. The best way to do this is getting some plans. You can search for free plans, or you can buy some. If one of the main reasons to having a pergola is to entertain, make sure you build it big enough to accommodate people comfortably. Adding a pergola will not only make a great focal point, it will add value to your property, making this project a great investment.

Where do you begin? The first thing to do is to find out of any requirements by visiting or calling the building department. If digging will be involved, call the utility department to find out if there is any power, water, or electrical lines that might get damaged while digging. Once you have found

Most every living room has a wall unit of some sort. Wall units are practically a necessity. Functionally, they unify a room and act as an all-in-one storage unit.

themselves, located under the TV, usually in an alcove. The unit may be constructed using anodized aluminum columns and a metal frame to support the structure. This particular type of wall unit usually stands on its own against the wall.

Comprised of several multi-sectional and discrete components, traditionally, wall units have been fixed to the living room wall. They may be purchased premade and ready to go, or they may be customized per installation. There’s a vast range of styles, from classic contemporary to chic minimalistic. Traditionally, wall units have been composed of oak, maple and cedar, however, more and more designers are opting for more modern materials such as metal, chrome, plastic and even glass. Today, the wall unit often comprises the media center. It is here where the surround sound stereo, the flat screen TV, the DVR recorder, DVD player, cable box, PlayStation Xbox or Wii, records, CDs and books are stored. With a wall unit, everything is possible.

Then you do have wall units which are attached to the wall, and function more like shelves. These are usually composed of a combination of metal, lacquered wood, glass, melamine, fabric panels, aluminum, and polished boards. This type of wall unit integrates well within a room, as there is no break in the lines; the unit is itself part of the wall, thus there is a seamless flow. Wall units are extremely practical. When considering one for your home, choose something that fits with your lifestyle. Consider how much functionality you want to get out of it. It may be best to consult a design outfit or storage solution company that specializes in wall units to get the best results. Of course, you can just as easily buy a prefab wall unit, however, do make sure that the components are modular, so that you will be able to add and take away parts as needed. To get ideas for styles, surf online and consult furniture catalogs.

Customized solutions seek to expand your space and organize the materials within it. Wall units today can be extensions of book shelves, TV stands and they can even function as room dividers. Modern designs are usually modular in nature, and you can add and remove parts as you wish. This sort of flexibility is key when selecting your own wall unit. A typical design consists of a wide expanse of shelving, which may or may not incorporate cubbies or nooks. Below these shelves there are usually drawers. The shelves can be used to store any number of things, but many opt to use them as a display case of sorts, placing their various knickknacks and collectibles there. Often, the TV will be placed on one of the shelves as well. The peripherals, such as the DVD player or cable box often have a spot for

Leaning Tower of Pisa has never been straight

SASKHOUSES.COM

Soon after building started in 1173, the foundation of the Pisa tower settled unevenly. Construction was stopped, and was continued only a 100 year later. It then became visibly clear that the Tower of Pisa is leaning, tilting to the south. Since regular measuring of the tower began in 1911, the top of the tower has moved 1,2 millimetres (0,05 inch) per year. Today the top of the Tower of Pisa is some 5,3m (17,4 ft) off-centre.

After the bell tower of the Cathedral of Pavia collapsed in 1989, the Consorzio Progetto Torre di Pisa (Tower of Pisa Project Consortium) commissioned engineers to stabilise the Leaning Tower. Because the Tower tilted in different directions in its first years, it is slightly curved, like a banana. Engineers are working on the footing of the Tower rather than the structure, hoping to ease the top back about 20 cm (about 8 inches). But it means that the 800-year old tower will remain leaning. The Leaning Tower of Pisa stands in the Piazza dei Miracoli (Miracle Square) in the town of Pisa, Italy. There are 296 steps to the top of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

When Ferdinand Magellan led the first circumnavigation of earth in the 16th century, his 5 ships were about 33 metres (100 feet) long, and reached 10 knots. Today, cruise liners exceed 300m (1,000ft) in length and reaches 25 knots. Other beauties in the big league include the Norway, at one stage, the longest liner at 315,5 metres (1,035 feet), yet she’s not in the top ten by Gross Registered Tonnes (GRT), registering 76,049 tonnes. The Grand Princess, which cruises the Mediterranean, is, at 109,000 tonnes, one of the biggest. She accommodates 2,600 passengers.

The Carnival Destiny - at 101,000 tonnes the first liner to displace more than 100,000 tonnes accommodates more passengers, courting 3,400 passengers at a time in the Caribbean. The two 142,000 tonnes sister ships Voyager of the Seas and Explorer of the Seas are not shy of their size, either. They cruise in at 308 metres (1,025 feet) in length. The Titanic, built for $10 million in 1911, was 265 metres (883 feet) long.

Not to be outdone in any manner Queen Mary 2, launched by Cunard on 12 January 2004, is 345 metres (1,132 ft) long, displaces 150 000 tonnes and accommodates 1 253 crew members at the service of 2 620 passengers in the grandest luxury. Queen Mary 2 was the world’s largest, longest, tallest ocean liner... until Royal Caribbean International’s Freedom of the Seas was launched in April 2006. Although QM2 is 6m longer, Freedom of the Seas comes in at 160,000 tonnes, is 339 metres (1,112 ft) long, 56m (184 ft) wide and has a cruising speed of 21.6 knots. She is 15m wider than QM2 and pampers 4,375 lucky passengers in her 1,800 rooms across 15 decks. Her sister ship, Liberty of the Seas, was launched a year later, being considered the largest ocean liner. She features a waterpark, cantilevered whirlpools, and onboard surfing. But they all are outdone by the magnificent Independence of the Seas, launched in April 2008.

Chocolate &Strawberries The history of chocolate is as delicious, as suspicious and as mysterious as the chocolate itself. Though, no one knows the exact date but researchers believe that chocolate was enjoyed by ancient Maya and Aztec civilizations in Central America. It is believed that in the tropical rainforests of the Americas cacao beans were discovered around 2,000 years ago. A few sources claim that the first recorded use of cocoa beans in written form go back to 1100BC to a settlement of pre-Mayan origins. Some people say cocoa beans were discovered as early as 4000 years back. However, it is also true that it wasn’t used as it is being used nowadays but chocolate beans were used to make several types of spicy and frothy drink or beverage from cacao beans. It is strongly believed that the way we eat chocolate now was evolved after many years. Sources say that it was only an English doctor called Sir Hans Sloane who traveled extensively South America who later focused on cocoa beans as food values and added milk in cocoa beans to develop the chocolate bar. Over the period of time, centuries after centuries, years after years, different types of drinks, cookies and bars were evolved made out of chocolate. One thing was same-the cocoa beans were considered to be pricy and valuable so they were given as gifts on many special occasions, such as child birth, religious ceremonies and even social rituals. Even in the old barter system, cocoa beans were exchanged for other commodities, such as clothes, ornaments, jade and other ceremonial as well as day to day items/commodities. Even as of today, cocoa beans are one of the most sought after food items that are being used to prepare several food items around the world. There is hardly any country where chocolate is not present in some form or other. That shows the popularity of chocolate amongst young and older, women and men, kids and adults.

that the history of strawberries dates back to around 2200 years back, and they are known to be grown as a wild fruit in Italy around 234 B.C. It is also believed that strawberries were first discovered by Europeans in Virginia when their ships were landed there in 1588. Other undocumentary sources claim that strawberries were enjoyed by early settlers in Massachusetts grown by local American Indians who cultivated this amazing fruit as early as 1643 or even former. No matter, where this juicy, aromatic and tasty fruit was grown first, but in today’s’ world you can find strawberry in many different varieties around the world. National agricultural stats show that in the modern America over 25,000 acres of strawberries are planted each year in California. Not only this, but California is the only state that produces the major part of strawberries (over 80%) and supplies not only other states in America but many parts of the world where people wish to enjoy quality strawberries.

Another most sought after food item is strawberry. Let’s see a brief introduction about the history of strawberries. Researchers believe

Why does water not calm the tongue after eating hot spicy food? The spices in most of the hot foods that we eat are oily, and, like your elementary school science teacher taught you, oil and water don’t mix. In this case, the water just rolls over the oily spices. What can you do to calm your aching tongue? Eat bread. The bread will absorb the oily spices. A second solution is to drink milk. Milk contains a substance called “casein” which will bind to the spices and carry them away. Alcohol also dissolves oily spices.

More than 5 billion crayons are produced each year More than 100 billion crayons have been produced so far. The first crayons consisted of a mixture of charcoal and oil. In the early 1900s, cousins Edwin Binney and Harold Smith developed a nontoxic wax crayon. Binney’s wife, Alice, attached the French word for chalk, craie, with “ola,” from oily, to form the Crayola name. Their first box of Crayola crayons were sold for a nickel in 1903. The rst Crayola crayons came in a box of eight colours: black, blue, brown, green, orange, purple, red and yellow. By 1957, 40 new colours were introduced. Today there are more than 120 crayon colours, including Atomic Tangerine, Blizzard Blue, Mango Tango, Outrageous Orange, Laser Lemon, Screamin’ Green and Shocking Pink.

from Weber’s Big Book of Grilling™ by Jamie Purviance and Sandra S. McRae Prep Time: 25 minutes Marinating Time: Grilling Time: 20 to 25 minutes • 3 ears fresh sweet corn, in their husks • 3 tablespoons extra virgin olive oil • 1/3 pound andouille sausage, cut crosswise into 1/8-inch slices • 1/2 cup nely chopped yellow onion • 3/4 cup nely chopped red or yellow bell pepper • 2 teaspoons minced garlic • 3/4 cup seeded, nely chopped ripe tomato • 1/4 cup white wine vinegar • 1/4 cup chicken broth, hot • 1/2 teaspoon kosher salt • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper • 1/4 cup loosely packed fresh basil leaves, cut into ribbons • 1-1/2 cups tightly packed arugula leaves

• 6 whole chicken legs (drumsticks with thighs attached), 8 to 10 oz. each, trimmed of excess skin and fat • Vegetable oil

1. Soak the corn in cold water for 30 minutes or more. If necessary, use a weight to keep the ears submerged. Drain.

1. In a medium bowl combine the marinade ingredients. 2. Place the chicken in a large, resealable plastic bag and pour in the marinade. Press out the air and seal the bag tightly. Turn the bag to distribute the marinade, place the bag in a shallow dish, and refrigerate for 2 to 4 hours, turning occasionally. 3. Remove the chicken from the bag and discard the marinade. Sear, skin side down rst, over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F) for 10 minutes, turning once. Move the chicken over indirect medium heat and continue cooking until the juices run clear and the internal temperature reaches 180°F in the thickest part of the thigh, 20 to 30 minutes more. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling. Serve warm. Makes 6 servings

2. In a medium sauté pan over medium heat, warm the olive oil. Add the sausage and cook for 5 minutes, turning occasionally. Add the onion, bell pepper, and garlic, and cook, stirring occasionally, until the pepper is tender, 7 to 8 minutes. Remove from the heat and set aside. 3. Grill the corn over direct medium heat (350°F to 450°F) for 20 to 25 minutes, turning three or four times. Keep the lid closed as often as possible during grilling. Remove from the grill and allow to cool slightly. When cool enough to handle, carefully pull back the husks and remove the silk. With a sharp knife, cut the kernels from the cobs. Add the kernels to the sausage mixture. 4. Just before serving, add the tomatoes, vinegar, chicken broth, salt, pepper, and basil to the andouille mixture. Stir gently to mix. 5. Arrange the arugula on a platter, spoon the warm salad on top, and serve immediately. Makes 4 to 6 servings

Column

Reena Nerbas

June 11th, 2009

Dear Reena, I read your column regularly and have received many helpful hints; I now need your help. I make chocolate cake with flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, (I usually put the soda with the cocoa as I find it gives it a more intense chocolate flavour), baking powder, salt, oil, eggs, buttermilk and coffee. The problem is it always boils over. I changed my baking soda and powder brands and it still boils over. Can you help me? I am tired of cleaning my oven and putting out fires. Also, I would like to make bite brownies and have purchased pans but have no idea how long to bake them. I tried different baking times and even lowered the temperature from 350 to 300 to slow the cooking process. I like them baked but chewy. Any suggestions? Sherry Hi Sherry, I love baking brownies and finishing them off with icing and coloured sprinkles! Your challenge is a fairly common one, buttermilk and baking soda will have your concoction foaming up so pick a big saucepan when making brownies, it’s kind of like combining vinegar and baking soda. Therefore changing brands won’t make a difference in your final recipe. Also, reduce your stove heat and cook at a lower temperature. When making bite size brownies it is important to keep in mind that because they are very small they will bake quickly therefore reduce the baking time to 10 minutes or less (depending on your oven) at 325 degrees. For extra chewy brownies add an extra egg and a combination of different types of chocolate. Unsweetened chocolate has the highest proportion of starches which makes a stiffer brownie. Semisweet chocolate produces a creamier texture. Put the two together, with a few tablespoons of cocoa powder to thicken out the texture and create a chewier brownie. Hi Hanna, We’ve all been there in one way or another so don’t be too hard on yourself! Since the flooring is less than 50 years old you are likely dealing with vinyl and by the sound of your description the damage is permanent, as oven cleaner is very caustic and will have burnt through the vinyl. It is possible to have a professional installer remove a piece of vinyl from an inconspicuous area such as in a closet or under the refrigerator and do a patch. The patch will need to be sealed with an appropriate seam seal product. You can also patch the vinyl yourself with the following steps: Step 1: You will need to replace the area with a scrap. To remove a little piece from another area, hold a putty knife blade perfectly perpendicular to the floor. Score the area and then heat it with a hairdryer and lift it up carefully using the putty knife. Lay the patch over the area to be repaired making sure that the pattern lines up. Place masking tape across to make sure the scrap piece does not move. Use a sharp razor blade knife and cut along the pattern on the patch through the damaged piece right through to the sub. Remove the masking tape, the patch piece and the scratched area using a hairdryer and putty knife. Scrape the sub floor underlay clean and apply a thin coat of adhesive allow that to dry for 30 minutes. Next apply the adhesive to the back of the patch and the sub floor. Position the patch into place and push it down firmly. Lay a piece of parchment or wax paper on the patch and pile it with books, leave overnight. In the morning apply a seam weld (from a hardware store) along the pattern joint to hide the repair. I know that this sounds like a lot of work but if you buy really good adhesive glue and seam weld, the project won’t take long and you will be happy with the results.

Fabulous Tips for Reusing, Reducing and Recycling Old Jars:  Get serious about saving pennies by using up the ketchup at the bottom of your almost empty bottle. Add a little water or vinegar and shake; then use the liquid to flavour soups, stews or salad dressings.

Dear Reena, The unthinkable has happened to me, blueberry juice was spilt onto an upholstered chair. Can you please provide a cure? Thanks, Nori

 Use a glass jar to dry gloves and mittens. Pull each glove over the bottom of an empty jar and then position the jar upside down on a radiator or hot air vent. Warm air will fill the jar and quickly radiate out to dry damp apparel. Taken from Household Solutions with Green Alternatives

Hi Nori, Normally a fruit juice stain can be zapped by pouring boiling water through fabric; the juice will then dissolve the colour. However, since we are dealing with furniture without fabric content/colour information your best bet is to tackle the stain in the following manner. When it comes to furniture the easiest way to remove blueberry stains is by soaking the area with white vinegar and blotting it with a white sponge. Continue this method until the stain is a distant memory! Dear Reena, I used “Easy Off” the other day on my client’s stove. I had the almost white linoleum or vinyl around the stove covered with newspaper. After having it soak for 15 min. or so, I saw to my horror that some spray had gotten past the newspaper and penetrated the floor. The colour was bright reddish brown. We called the 1-800 number on the can and the lady said: Make a paste out of Comet cleaner and water, put it on the spots and let stand for 15 minutes. We did as she recommended and guess what? The spots were still there. They seemed to have burnt right into the floor. Fortunately, the lady was very gracious and said that is was not my fault. Have you a solution? Your thankful reader, Hanna

Can openers invented 48 years after cans Cans were opened with a hammer and chisel before the advent of can openers. The tin cannister, or can, was invented in 1810 by a Londoner, Peter Durand. The year before, French confectioner, Nicolas Appert, had introduced the method of canning food (as it became known) by sealing the food tightly inside a glass bottle or jar and then heating it. He could not explain why the food stayed fresh but his bright idea won him the 12,000-francs prize that Napoleon offered in 1795 for preserving food. Durand supplied the Royal Navy with canned heat-preserved food while Appert would help Napoleon’s army march on its stomach. Tin canning was not widely adopted until 1846, when a method was invented to increase can production from 6 in an hour to 60. Still, there were no can openers yet and the products labels would read: “cut around on the top near to outer edge with a chisel and hammer.” The can opener was invented in 1858 by American Ezra Warnet. There also is a claim that Englishman Robert Yeates invented the can opener in 1855. But the can opener did not become popular until, ten years later, it was given away for free with canned beef. The well-known wheel-style opener was invented in 1925. Beer in a can was launched in 1935. The easy-open can lid was invented by Ermal Cleon Fraze in 1959. Since 1972, some 64 million tons of aluminum cans (about 3 trillion cans) have been produced. Placed end-to-end, they could stretch to the moon about a thousand times. Still, cans represent less than 1% of solid waste material - about one quarter of all cans are recycled. Worldwide, some 9 million cans are recycled every hour. Which is good news, considering that it takes a can about 200 years to degrade if you bury it. It takes paper about a month to bio-degrade, a woolen sock about a year, and plastic hundreds of years. Recycling cans saves 95% of the energy required to make aluminum from ore, or the equivalent of 18 million barrels of oil, or 10.8 billion kilowatt hours. Used aluminum cans that are recycled return to store shelves within 60 days.Canned petfood was introduced by James Spratt in 1865.

steel rims. This improves overall heat dissipation from braking, which can decrease the chances of brake failure. Again, this has implications in regard to the overall safety of a vehicle. Easier balancing – The design of alloy rims and the placement of their balancing weights makes this task a bit easier to handle. This can be an advantage for drivers who must replace tires on the fly since the balancing can remain largely intact because the weights are on the center rather than the edge of the wheel. Improved cosmetics – While performance and safety are very big issues, some drivers simply like alloy wheels because they look better. The fact of the matter is that alloy rims tend to be shinier and may also have unique, eye-catching designs. This removes any need for wheel covers or paint because the rims themselves are the eye candy. While alloy wheels do have plenty of advantages, there are some cons that can go along with their use. Some of the downfalls that go along with alloy rims include: Reduced durability – It is hard to deny that steel is an extremely durable material, but aluminum is not. Alloy rims are simply easier to damage, ding and even destroy than steel. This can cause problems for drivers who find they must replace their rims or pay for potentially costly repairs. It is estimated that over half the cars on the road today ride on alloy rims. The popularity of this wheel style is hard to top for a number of reasons, but there are some potential pitfalls to watch out for when alloy is selected. Unlike other wheels that are normally made out of very heavy and very durable steel, alloy rims are comprised of aluminum, magnesium or a combination of the two. This gives them a few distinct advantages that include: Lighter weight – This can be a very big advantage in the eyes of many motorists because lighter weight rims can improve overall vehicle functioning and handling. Increased speed – Alloy wheels tend to improve aerodynamics, which assists not only with speed, but gas consumption. The lower weight puts less drag on a vehicle, which is considered a very good thing by those who enjoy performance at higher speeds. Better performance – Many motorists discover that alloy wheels can give them a better overall ride because handling is improved when these rims replace steel. Anything that improves the steering of a vehicle can also be seen as a safety perk, as well.

The initial sticker price – Alloy wheels are more costly to make and purchase. This can be seen as a major con for drivers on a budget. While alloy rims are more costly and a little less durable than their steel counterparts, they do offer plenty of advantages. More than 50 percent of the drivers on the road today recognize them as a better choice when it comes to aerodynamics, safety and handling. Improved heat conduction – Wheels made out of aluminum, magnesium or both are also known to conduct heat better than

THE ULTIMATE IN PERFORMANCE EXHAUST It’s no secret, NASCAR will only choose quality brands to become part of the NASCAR family of performance products. Aero Exhaust is an exclusive NASCAR partner. Feel the unmistakable power and performance of the Aero Exhaust Turbine series. Every car, SUV, and truck equipped with the Turbine will become more powerful while using less fuel. And you can do it for less than the cost of an average tune-up.

A BREAKTHROUGH IN HIGH PERFORMANCE EXHAUST TECHNOLOGY When the incoming exhaust air stream enters the Aero Exhaust it is rapidly expanded and split via an airfoil cone with an orifice similar to a jet engine. The outer airflow velocity is increased due to the increased distance the outer air must travel. The higher density inner air stream also creates a low pressure vacuum in the outer expansion chamber that assists in drawing the air out of the exhaust pipe. The outer air stream accelerates as it recombines with the inner air stream. The recombining of the air streams muffles the exhaust sound and increases the exhaust flow. Thus allowing your engine to breathe easier and dramatically increases your vehicles performance. The Turbine series allows for more efficient combustion to create added power instead of simply dumping more fuel into your engine. The Aero Turbine achieves incredible performance and improved gas mileage while creating the smoothest low throaty turbo sound on the market.

that the place is actually interesting enough for you. The place should be a spot for recreation, exploration and relaxation. It should not be dull and boring for you and your fellow campers. Make sure that you know the nearest points of attraction that you can visit. Also, check if the actual places of attraction matches your chosen activities.

Water source If you are planning to camp out for several days or even weeks, it will be impractical if you have to store and bring water from your home. As such, it will be better if you pick a camp site that is near a reliable water source. Fresh water sites should be prioritized. Before your actual camping activity, make sure that your prospect water source is clean. If you have some doubts, you may either reduce your camping days or you should consider bringing beverages with you.

Collection of wood Before you actually set out for a camping activity, you should always make a plan. A plan helps you prepare for the actual night outdoor. In preparing for a camping activity, the first thing that you should do is to choose a perfect camp site. The camp site is a primary factor that you will consider in planning your activities for the whole camping activity. It is also an important consideration in determining which tools and gears you will bring and use. A great campsite will eventually make your camping experience fun and fruitful without the need to suffer from unexpected circumstances. Below are some of the basic factors that you should consider when looking for the best camp site:

Accessibility to the location The actual campsite should be in an area that people can easily locate and drive to. Make sure that you won’t have to struggle in driving just to reach your camp site. In case you cannot drive to the actual location, make sure that there is a foot trail and that you find it easy to go to from your camp site. Even the foot trail should not be very far. The maximum length of the trail should be about half a mile.

Attractions around the site Pick a camp site that is very appealing and engaging. Keep in mind that you will stay in the camp site for several hours so you have to make sure

Issue #23- June 11/09

One of the most awaited activities in a camp night out is the creation of a camp fire. In order to make a perfect camp fire, you need a good source of wood. Keep in mind that although you might be camping in the forest, there are many places where you cannot collect woods. Note that you cannot cut wood to make a camp fire because such is illegal in many places. Also, bear in mind that live wood will not burn easily and make fire. Instead, you will need dry wood. So, you have to pick a camp site that is near an area that’s abundant of dry woods.

Site recognition Make sure that your camp site was used by other campers before. This will ensure you that the place is somehow safe and secure. If you camp in a new place, you will have to prepare the place for camping and that might take a lot of time. Also, make sure that your camping site is recognized by the respective authorities in that area. In case of disaster and or accidents, you can be sure that local officials will alert you and extend their help to you primarily because they recognize their territorial jurisdiction and responsibility over your camping area. Can Cat Lovers Ever Love Dogs? People often define themselves as either a cat lover or a dog lover, but the question remains can a cat lover ever love dogs? Or, dog lovers ever love cats? It takes a lot for a person to change even in the simplest of ways. This seems to be one of the many difficult ways because of the huge investment people put into their pets. The Dog Lover The dog lover often loves their dog for many reasons. Dogs are playful and attentive to their owners. They love to spend their time hiding under their owner’s chair or chasing their tail. It just seems as if they are fun loving creatures. Sure, they bark and they can be very annoying when they want your attention even when you are busy. But, they won’t fail to greet you when you come home and you are where their loyalty lies no matter what. The Cat Lover On the other side of the coin, we have the cat lover. Cats are more independent and more self centered. But, they can provide much affection to their owners nonetheless. They can be playful when they want to be. They can also be full of personality, good or bad. Cat lovers love this about their animals. They are themselves. Of course, they can be rather snooty to some. They are independent and they certainly won’t greet you unless it is in their best interest to do so.

Vitamin A was first discovered back in 1912, by a Polish biochemist named Casimir Funk. He came up with the word vitamine, which was later given the name vitamin. Funk was the first to discover vitamins as we know them today, although vitamin A was actually the first one discovered, hence the letter “A” in the title of the vitamin.

consuming around 5,000 international units (IU) of vitamin A. Depending on your health and your age, you may need to consume more or less. The safest form of vitamin A is beta carotene as mentioned above, and it can be taken in much larger doses. No matter what age you may be, you can feel safe to consume high amounts of vitamin A in the form of beta carotene.

You can find vitamin A in natural foods such as oranges and yellow fruits. It can also be found in vegetables as well, such as spinach and fats. When found in vegetables, vitamin A is water soluble, coming in the form of beta carotene. The beta carotene form of vitamin A can be eliminated from your body through natural processes, making it an excellent way to get vitamin A.

If you don’t consume enough vitamin A in your diet, you’ll end up with a deficiency. A deficiency is never a good thing, as it normally results in skin problems, increased infections, and even night blindness as well. A prolonged deficiency in vitamin A can put you at a risk for cancer as well, and you’ll also miss out on any effects of anti aging that the vitamin might have. Although you should begin taking it immediately if you have a deficiency, the effects wouldn’t be the same as they would be if you stayed up to date with the right amount on a daily basis.

Vitamin A is required by the body on an every day basis to maintain healthy skin and keep your eyesight on track. There are many people who say that carrots provide enough vitamin A to prevent you from getting night blindness. The fact is, ancient Egyptian doctors prescribed liver in their time, which they said contained enough vitamin A to combat night blindness. Vitamin A is also known as an antioxidant, which makes it ideal to prevent cancer and anti aging. Along with these benefits, it also helps with your immune system as well.

The Conclusion While it seems that many people have an overall preference for one type of animal to the next, there is nothing to say that they can not switch from being a dog lover to being a cat lover. But, it is unlikely that they will receive the same attention from their pet as they did with the other species. Dog lovers will forever value their best friend while cat lovers will always value their cat’s personality. If you are a dog lover or a pet lover and are thinking of venturing to the other side, consider the various differences in these animals before you do. You’ll find that many times, it is the qualities that the pet offers that makes them the right, the most attractive choice to you.

To get the proper absorption of vitamin A, you’ll need to consume fat. Those of you who happen to be on a low fat or restricted diet, simply may not be getting the right amounts of vitamin A from your supplements that you may think.
