Megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar arrested for assaulting daughter

(AP) — Megachurch pastor Creflo Dollar has been arrested after authorities say he slightly hurt his 15-year-old daughter in a fight at his metro Atlanta home. Fayette County Sheriff’s Office investigator Brent Rowan says deputies responded to a call of domestic violence at the home around 1 a.m. Friday. Rowan says the 50-year-old pastor and his daughter were arguing over whether she could go to a party when Dollar “got physical” with her, leaving her with “superficial injuries.” Dollar faces misdemeanor charges of simple battery and cruelty to children. He bonded out of Fayette County jail Friday morning. A phone number listed for him didn’t connect. Dollar is the pastor for World Changers Church International in College Park. A spokeswoman for the church did not immediately return a call seeking comment. KESSLER AND VĂ?CTOR MANUEL RAMOS robert.kessler@newsday.com,victor.ramos@newsday.com A sweeping crackdown on the illegal distribution of prescription painkillers on Long Island and in New York City netted 98 arrests, including a doctor who provided narcotics to Medford pharmacy killer David Laffer, authorities said Wednesday. The three medical professionals arrested in the raids dispensed a total of more than 3 million pills in two years, according to court documents. Scores of federal Drug Enforcement Administration agents and local police officers swarmed throughout Nassau and Suffolk counties and Brooklyn, Queens and Staten Island over the past week and up to Wednesday morning. The massive, unprecedented operation focused on "doctor shoppers" and alleged members of drug distribution rings that obtain large quantities of drugs from different doctors for personal use or resale. Among those arrested were Dr. Eric Jacobson, who practices in Great Neck and lives in Huntington. Jacobson had been under investigation for providing painkillers to Laffer and is described as one of the largest distributors of oxycodone in New York State, having issued prescriptions for more than 2 million pills between August 2010 and December 2011, according to court documents. Also arrested were Baldwin Dr. William J. Conway, who federal officials said illegally distributed more than 780,000 oxycodone pills, and Rools Deslouches, a Brentwood nurse practitioner who distributed more than 420,000 pills. bution "a menace every bit as dangerous as trafficking in cocaine or other narcotics." "The prescription drug problem presents a new face and a new challenge for law enforcement, as it involves new actors and permeates all of our communities," Lynch said in a statement. The raids were part of a wide-ranging effort to curb the illegal distribution of prescription drugs, including oxycodone, OxyContin, Percocet, Vicodin and hydrocodone, Lynch said Wednesday at a news conference at the U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn. The coordinated effort to combat the growing threat of prescription drug trafficking and abuse was accelerated after two horrendous crimes on Long Island. Last June 19, Father's Day, Laffer gunned down four people at the Medford pharmacy while stealing large quantities of painkillers. Then on New Year's Eve, John Capano, an agent with the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, was shot to death while struggling with a suspect who had robbed a Seaford pharmacy of painkillers. Jacobson, Conway, and Deslouches were all held without bail as a danger to the community by Magistrate E. Thomas Boyle at their arraignments in federal court in Central Islip. They were not required to enter a plea to charges of illegally distributing prescription drugs. The remaining 95 people were arraigned or in the process of being arraigned Wednesday. The three allegedly operated cash-only businesses -- charging fees of up to $450 for a visit -- and issued prescriptions for claims of pains and ailments from patients whom they didn't put through rigorous medical checks, according to documents from federal prosecutors. Assistant U.S. Attorney Michael Canty described Deslouches as "a drug dealer in a lab coat" during his arraignment Wednesday. BISHOP AND LI DELEGATION LEADING FIGHT TO KEEP FEDERAL AVIATION JOBS ON LONG ISLAND Bishop, Schumer, Gillibrand, King, Israel, McCarthy, Ackerman Urge FAA to Build New Facility on LI WASHINGTON – Congressman Tim Bishop met this morning with Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood and acting Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Administrator Michael Huerta to make the case for Long Island as the site for a new integrated Air Traffic Control system for New York’s Airports. Bishop spearheaded a letter to LaHood and Huerta signed by the entire Long Island Congressional Delegation, including US Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, requesting that the proposed integrated control facility (NYICC) to replace the aging New York ARTCC (Westbury) and New York TRACON (Ronkonkoma) facilities be constructed and remain on Long Island. “We are confident that constructing a modern, state-of-the-art FAA facility on Long Island will save money, create jobs, and reinforce New York’s critical transportation infrastructure,” the delegation wrote. “Additionally, maintaining the consolidated control facility in proximity to current operations on Long Island will go a long way to protect the current workforce of 850 highly-skilled FAA employees in the busiest U.S. Airspace from potential attrition and unnecessary relocation costs. The delegation estimates that constructing the facility on Long Island will boost the region’s economy and construction industry by creating over 1,000 new jobs. Bishop and other members of the delegation will meet again on Thursday with the FAA to discuss the project in greater detail and potential locations on Long Island, including Long Island MacArthur Airport. Bishop has already begun consultations with local municipalities to identify sites that will minimize costs, promote efficiencies and create jobs. “Building a new consolidated air traffic controller facility on Long Island will create over 1,000 construction jobs and retain over 850 highly-skilled FAA jobs on Long Island. Nassau BOCES honors its most outstanding students Freeport student is among this year's award recipients GARDEN CITY, N.Y., June 1, 2011 — Randall Willis, from the Freeport UFSD, received the Nassau BOCES George Farber Outstanding Student Award for his academic achievements, perseverance, enthusiasm and willingness to help others. He was among 18 honorees recognized at a ceremony at the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts in Syosset. “George was an incredible ambassador for Nassau BOCES, Nassau County and Long Island, but really for public education” said District Superintendent Dr. Thomas Rogers, as he welcomed the recipients, educators, family members and other guests to the event. “I can think of no more fitting tribute than to recognize those students who, like George, would be the best ambassadors. Israel to Jail African Migrants for Up to Three Years Israel may jail illegal immigrants for up to three years under a new law, an Interior Ministry official has said “The law takes effect from today,” said Sabine Haddad, the Interior Ministry spokeswoman. The hostility Israelis have for migrants recently reached a boiling point when a Tel-Aviv mob took to the streets and began beating African migrants in the mostly black and mostly poor town of Hatikva. Demonstrators shouted, “Blacks out!” and ”Send the Sudanese back to Sudan” while reportedly pelting them with rocks and pulling them off bicycles. Yishai, of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party, told the newspaper Maariv on Friday he saw the African arrivals, many of whom are Muslims or Christians, as a demographic threat, according to Al Jazeera. “The infiltrators along with the Palestinians will quickly bring us to the end of the Zionist dream,” Yishai said. “We do not need to import more problems from Africa.” Aryeh Eldad, another conservative leader, asked says that Israeli troops should shoot any Africans who breached its borders. Minimum wage bill pushes federal increase to $10 an hour It appears federal lawmakers can agree on one thing. Reps. John Conyers, Jr. (D-Mich.), Jesse Jackson, Jr. (D-Ill.) and Dennis Kucinich (D-Ohio) are pushing legislation that will raise the federal minimum wage to $10 hour. The “Catching Up To 1968 Act of 2012” would increase the minimum wage and mandate that the minimum wage be automatically adjusted to meet rising inflation. Republicans and Democrats on the Hill are supporting the legislation and both President Obama and Mitt Romney also agree that the current wage is to low and should be adjusted to match 2012 cost of living index. Rep. McCarthy Working to Help Stay-at-Home Spouses Gain Financial Stability Through Fair Access to Credit At Hearing in DC, McCarthy Seeks to Reform Unfair Banking Practice

Outcry over Romney’s Mass. affirmative action move WASHINGTON (AP) — Mitt Romney scuttled the Massachusetts government’s long-standing affirmative action policies with a few strokes of his pen on a sleepy holiday six months after he became governor. No news conference or news release trumpeted Romney’s executive order on Bunker Hill Day, June 17, 2003, in the deserted Statehouse. But when civil rights leaders, black lawmakers and other minority groups learned of Romney’s move two months later, it sparked a public furor. Romney drew criticism for cutting the enforcement teeth out of the law and rolling back more than two decades of affirmative action advances. Civil rights leaders said his order stripped minorities, women, disabled people and veterans of equal access protections for state government jobs and replaced them with broad guidelines. They complained Romney hadn’t consulted them before making the changes, snubbing the very kind of inclusion he professed to support. “It was done under the radar and there was a big backlash,” said Michael Curry, president of the Boston branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. “It was clear Romney really did not have an appreciation for the affirmative action policies long in place.” Romney responded by creating an advisory panel to recommend changes. But he eventually retreated completely, leaving the state’s old policies in place. His handling of affirmative action may offer insights into how he would deal with civil rights issues if he were to defeat Barack Obama, the nation’s first black president, in the fall election. The Republican challenger hasn’t talked much about affirmative action during the campaign. Romney’s campaign did not respond to requests for comment. “This is the canary in the coal mine on how he feels about civil rights issues,” said Julie Patino, who was deputy director of the state’s affirmative action office from 1995 to 1999. “It was a cloaked and unilateral move that eradicated years and years of civil rights advances and history. It was an astonishing act.” Patino said the state’s long, tortured history of race relations, including the violence over school busing that tore apart Boston in the 1970s, made Massachusetts’ affirmative action laws especially criti(Continued on page 13)

WASHINGTON, DC (June 6, 2012) – Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (DNY4), a member of the Financial Services Committee and the first and only woman to ever represent a part of Long Island in Congress, went to bat for stay-at-home spouses at a hearing about an unfair banking practice in Washington today. “Like the Paycheck Fairness Act, this is simply a matter fundamental economic fairness that Congress can and should do something about,” Rep. McCarthy said after the hearing. “A small tweak of the law could help countless stay-at-home spouses, including military spouses, gain the credit access that they rightfully deserve.” The hearing sought to shed light on a practice under the recent CARD Act in which banks would deny credit to stay-at-home spouses because the banks would not recognize household income, which in reality is often shared between spouses along with expenses. Ashley Boyd, campaign director for MomsRising, a nonprofit, nonpartisan advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring and protecting family economic security, echoed Rep. McCarthy’s concerns at the hearing: “Requiring a credit card company to consider individual, rather than household income in all cases, may unfairly and unreasonably impact stay-at-home parents who often have contributed to the sound management of their households’ finances.” Rep. McCarthy put added emphasis on military spouses at the hearing, asking Gail Hillebrand of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau to look specifically at how this “ability to pay” provision in granting credit has impacted the military community, which is “at an extreme disadvantage if one spouse is deployed, and not able to fill out the credit form on behalf of a stay-at-home spouse.” Rep. McCarthy also asked regulators to look for ways to protect divorced, widowed or abused spouses, for whom access to credit is complicated by the lack of a current, living or cooperative spouse. Finally, Rep. McCarthy noted the necessity of establishing a credit history for basic life transactions like renting or buying a home, buying a car and setting up utilities, and that “the ability-to-pay provision in the Federal Reserve’s rule doesn’t [help] someone’s ability to establish credit, as credit history can be built by being an ‘authorized user’ on a joint account.” (Continued from page 8)

Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4), the first and only woman to ever represent a part of Long Island in Congress and a co-sponsor of the Paycheck Fairness Act, called the block vote by Senate Republicans stopping the bill on June 5 “disgraceful” and an attack on “fundamental economic fairness” for women in America. The Senate voted 52-47, falling eight votes short of the 60 needed to allow the bill to be considered for a full vote. Last week, House Republicans voted to stop the bill from receiving a full vote as well. “Republicans in Washington are so beholden to an anti-middleclass, anti-worker and anti-women ideology that they won’t even let a bill as simple as one helping women be treated equally in the workplace come to the floor for a vote,” said Rep. McCarthy, who also co-sponsored the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act, a recent law that strengthened the right of women to challenge unfair pay in court. “This is simply a matter of fundamental economic fairness – the Republican rejection of the Paycheck Fairness Act is nothing short of disgraceful.” “Even Mitt Romney has said that he supports the concept of equal pay for women in the workplace, making the bill’s rejection by Senate and House Republicans even more shocking,” Rep. McCarthy added. Rep. McCarthy noted earlier today that “When I was a young woman starting a professional career in the 1960s, we took things like this for granted and there weren’t enough women in positions of power to speak up about it. Today as in then, this is simply a matter of fundamental economic fairness – there’s absolutely no reason that women shouldn’t be paid the same salary as men for the same work. This is a gross civil rights violation that’s out of step with our values as a nation and the role of women today as wage earners and leaders in their families and communities. It doesn’t just hurt women, either – every child, husband and parent being supported by a woman in the workplace suffers because of this inequality.” The Paycheck Fairness Act (S.3220, H.R.1519) is a comprehensive bill that strengthens the Equal Pay Act of 1963, which made it illegal for employers to pay unequal wages to men and women who perform substantially equal work. The Paycheck Fairness Act is commonsense legislation that, among other things, would achieve NASSAU COUNTY EDITION

the following: · Better align key Equal Pay Act defenses with those in Title VII. · Bring remedies available under the Equal Pay Act into line with remedies available under other civil rights laws. · Make the requirements for class action lawsuits under the Equal Pay Act match those of the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure. · Protect whistleblower employees who share their own salary information at work from retaliation by an employer. According to the latest U.S. Census statistics, on average, fulltime working women earn 77 cents to every dollar earned by men for equivalent work. If this earnings gap is not corrected, by the age of 65 years, the average working woman would have lost more than $430,000 over her working lifetime. The wage gap is significantly higher for women of color, with African-American women earning 64 cents and Latina women earning 56 cents for every dollar earned by a Caucasian man. This is a significant issue in Rep. McCarthy’s Congressional District, which is approximately 20 percent African-American and 20 percent Hispanic or Latino, according to the 2010 Census.

McCarthy Cosponsoring Bill to Keep Call Center Jobs in the U.S. GARDEN CITY, NY (June 5, 2012) – Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY4), who is dedicated to supporting policies that benefit American companies, American workers and American taxpayers in a global economy, said today that this week she will be cosponsoring legislation designed to save and create local jobs by encouraging companies to keep their customer service call centers in the United States rather than shipping them overseas. “We need to protect and create as many local American jobs as possible,” Rep. McCarthy said. “The U.S. Call Center and Consumer Protection Act will help keep our workers here in the States employed, protect taxpayers and offer more consumer protection than any other country can. I’m proud to cosponsor this legislation and hope the House Republican Majority brings it up for a vote soon.” The U.S. Call Center and Consumer Protection Act helps save and create local U.S. jobs by barring corporations that send U.S. call center jobs overseas from receiving any direct or indirect federal grants, loans or loan guarantees for five years after the outsourcing. The bill, whose primary sponsor is Congressman Tim Bishop (DNY1), also requires overseas call center employees to disclose their location to U.S. consumers and gives customers the right to be transferred to a U.S.-based call center upon request. The legislation is also designed to protect American consumers because overseas call centers often lack the privacy and security precautions that American call centers must operate under. Finally, the bill protects taxpayers by discouraging American companies from taking tax incentives to open call centers in the U.S. only to move the jobs overseas shortly after opening. According to the Communications Workers of America, which represents call center workers in the U.S., there is a steady trend of American companies outsourcing call center jobs, with total U.S. customer service/call center jobs dropping from 5.2 million in 2006 to 4.7 million in 2010.

MANGANO ANNOUNCES ALLSTATE, AMERICAN HEART ASSOCIATION WALKING PATH AT THE NASSAU COUNTY COURTHOUSE Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano today announced the Allstate and American Heart Association Walking Path at the Nassau County Court House giving residents, visitors and County employees a new opportunity to improve their heart health while at the Court House. Allstate Insurance Company partnered with the American Heart Association on the importance of health awareness in our communities. Through that partnership, Allstate sponsored a Walking Path location anywhere on Long Island. The Nassau County Government buildings were chosen as a location for the walking path based on the partnership and work Allstate shared with Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice on the issue of Teen Driver Safety. The Nassau County Executive and District Attorney’s office embraced the shared concern for our teen drivers and the education needed around distracted driving. The Walking Path is also a part of the American Heart Association’s callout to all Americans to make regular exercise part of their lives, and enhances County Executive Mangano’s Fit Nassau Initiative. County Executive Mangano stated, “Along with financial, social, and workplace wellbeing, physical health is an important part of improving quality of life, and I am pleased with this opportunity to encourage our employees and guests to build fitness into their daily routines.” The American Heart Association recommends 30 minutes of moderate exercise five times per week. A person is 1.5 to 2.4 times more likely to have coronary heart disease if he or she is inactive, but walking vigorously for 30 minutes per day can reduce high blood pressure and cholesterol, reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke. Studies show that some adults may gain as many as two hours of life expectancy for each hour of regular, vigorous physical activity, such as very brisk walking. A few weeks ago, Republican lawmakers rubberstamped a measure giving County Executive Ed Mangano unprecedented power, a measure dubbed by the press as the “King Mangano Bill.” Mr. Mangano will have alarming authority over the county budget without approval of the county legislature. It would also allow him to bypass approval from the Nassau Interim Finance Authority, NIFA – the fiscal watchdog monitoring Nassau’s finances. Governor Andrew Cuomo recently stated that Mr. Mangano’s most recent proposal to borrow over a hundred million dollars – without NIFA and legislative approval – “raises all sorts of questions.” And, according to the Fitch Ratings, the county’s fiscal outlook has again been downgraded to a “Negative Outlook.” Borrowing; crony contracts; costly frivolous lawsuits; over-promising, under-delivering; inability to achieve promised savings; consistently over budget. It all means one thing: Ed Mangano continues to mismanage the county. Mr. Mangano: Newsday recently admonished you that “it’s about governing.” Now is the time to heed their advice and start governing so that Nassau County can, once again, become fiscally stable. cal. The state government for decades has been a patronage haven for well-connected family members and friends of state lawmakers. The informal system of doling out state job spoils was known as “Irish affirmative action” in a nod to the powerful sway Irish-American politicians in particular have enjoyed on Beacon Hill. Romney has said he supports workplace diversity but opposes quotas in hiring, government contracting, school admissions and the like. “I believe our nation is at its best when people are evaluated as individuals,” he said in a 2008 Washington Post issues survey. “I do support encouraging inclusiveness and diversity, and I encourage the disclosure of the numbers of women and minorities in top positions of companies and government — not to impose a quota but to shine light on the situation.” Responding to the uproar in 2003, Romney insisted he wasn’t trying to undercut the state’s affirmative action policies. He stressed his commitment to workforce diversity, saying he had simply wanted to broaden, streamline and update the old policies. “I’m actually very proud of the progress that we’re making in the area of affirmative action,” he said in August 2003. “We’re making a very aggressive effort to change our culture to be more inclusive.” Romney’s executive order eliminated the state’s Office of Affirmative Action, which required executive agencies to have civil rights officers in charge of monitoring the hiring of minorities, women and people with disabilities. A state diversity office was created, along with broad goals and guidelines. Black leaders and civil rights groups said Romney’s order lacked enforcement mechanisms and removed penalties for agencies not complying with the state’s diversity efforts. The Boston Globe scolded him in an editorial, saying that he “sent exactly the wrong message in signing an executive order to revamp the state’s affirmative action program, consigning to the trash heap 33 years of guarantees that minorities and women would have equal access to state jobs.” To quell such criticism, Romney appointed a special advisory panel that included minority and civil rights leaders to recommend changes. “The changes the panel wanted became too hot for the administration to deal with,” said Leonard Alkins, who was head of the NAACP’s Boston branch during the controversy and was a member of Romney’s advisory panel. Alkins said many of the panel’s recommendations were aimed at bolstering the policies Romney had abolished. Romney essentially walked away from the fight, ignoring his own advisory panel. Instead, he had state officials effectively follow the old affirmative action policies he had formally revoked with his executive order. It wasn’t until Deval Patrick, a Democrat who was the state’s first black governor, took office in 2007 that the old policies formally were reinstated. Alkins said Romney never seemed to grasp that the aim of the state’s affirmative action policies was to protect people who were wrongfully denied equal rights in the workplace. “I felt that the governor was out of touch,” said Alkins. “He was very uncomfortable with the issue of race and how you would address issues such as affirmative action.” The policies Romney erased were started three decades earlier by Republican Gov. Frank Sargent and substantially expanded by Democratic Gov. Michael Dukakis in 1983. Three Republican governors who directly preceded Romney had left the policies in place. NASSAU COUNTY EDITION

Nassau County Young Democrats Help Build House for Single Mom in New Cassel with Habitat for Humanity Next NCYD Meeting is June 11 Dedicated to public service and giving back to the communities it works in, the Nassau County Young Democrats partnered with Habitat for Humanity to help build a house for a single mother of four children in New Cassel on June 2. The mother is currently working full-time and just received a master's degree. She spent many years in college part-time while taking care of her children. Her eldest child is currently a senior in high school and is looking forward to attending college. Her two middle children are currently in high school and continue to keep a high GPA. Her family takes education serious and understands how important it is to succeed in school. Her youngest child is severely developmentally delayed, which requires intensive ‘round the clock care and special accommodations in the home. Habitat for Humanity and the Nassau County Young Democrats worked together to help the Robinson family have an accessible home. “The Nassau County Young Democrats were honored to partner with Habitat for Humanity to help this family in New Cassel,” said Lauren Summa, president of the NCYD. “I believe that it was an important and worthwhile endeavor and our organization was proud to volunteer.” The next Nassau County Young Democrats meeting is Monday, June 11 at 7 p.m. at Eleanor Rigby’s in Mineola. MANGANO WELCOMES SUMMER INTERNS TO NASSAU COUNTY ATTORNEY’S OFFICE Mineola,, N.Y. – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano recently welcomed local law students to the County Attorney’s Summer Internship Program. Mangano Supports Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund on Eve of Belmont Stakes Plainview, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano joined Nassau County OTB on June 4th at the Race Palace in Plainview for an event to benefit the Permanently Disabled Jockeys Fund (PDJF). Nassau County OTB presented the PDJF with a donation for $4,000. The PDJF provides financial assistance to former jockeys who have suffered catastrophic on-track injuries. Nathan’s Famous was founded by Nathan Handwerker in Coney Island, Brooklyn in 1916. Nathan’s, surrounded by beach-goers and amusement park attendees, became known for its 5 cent frankfurters. In 1956, Handwerker and his wife Ida came east from Brooklyn to Lawrence, Long Island and opened the second Nathan’s on Long Beach Road in Oceanside. It became a well-known stop for sunsoaked locals traveling to and from the boardwalk and beach in Long Beach and today is the second oldest business establishment in Oceanside. Levy Park and Preserve in Merrick – to celebrate their achievements as Eagle Scouts and Gold Award recipients with Supervisor Kate Murray and members of the Town Board. Murray presented each Scout in attendance with certificates and special commemorative patches signifying their rise to the highest ranks of the renowned organizations. “These fine young men and women have gone ‘above and beyond’ in their pursuit of scouting’s highest ranks,” Murray said. “As the most famous Boy Scout, Theodore Roosevelt once said, ‘Every nation depends for its future upon the proper training and development of its youth.’ Those words often ring true, as many of our Eagle Scouts and Gold Award recipients go on to become society’s key leaders and contributors.”

From the Desk of Mayor Hall Last Spring, the Board of Trustees and I joined with real estate developers Renaissance DowntownUrban America (RDUA) to announce an ambitious community revitalization project, Renew Hempstead. This redevelopment and rebuilding of the downtown Hempstead area will deliver a myriad of benefits to our community, including job creation, increased tax revenue to the Village and its schools, and a safer, greener downtown. To ensure we serve the best interests of Villagers—residents as well as business owners—the Village assembled a Community Benefits Agreement (CBA) Committee. Comprised of local leaders, residents and stakeholders, CBA Committees represent and protect concerns and interests of residents of communities undergoing major construction projects or experiencing significant population growth. They accomplish this by creating Community Benefits Agreements, legally binding contracts between developers and the community that clearly define what benefits and contributions the project will deliver to the area. CBAs debuted in the late 1990s and are increasing in popularity as cities and urban areas continue to grow. Some examples of successful CBAs include:

 Hill District, Pittsburgh: This CBA established control of all future development, a local hiring requirement, funding for a full service grocery store, and a multi-purpose family center.  NoHo Commons, Los Angeles: This CBA called for 75% of end-user jobs to pay a living wage, job training and hiring programs, and the creation of a low-cost childcare facility.  Yale-New Haven Hospital, Connecticut: This agreement called for strong environmental standards, money for housing, economic development, and youth and job training programs. This arm of the CBA Committee will gather suggestions from residents, review submissions from the RenewHempstead.com Web site, and brainstorm ideas gathered from their knowledge and expertise. An executive committee co-chaired by Al Forde, the Vice President of the Hempstead Chamber of Commerce, and Louis Figueroa, a long time resident and former Vice President of Con Edison, will then take the Committee’s ideas, refine and consolidate them. Mr. Jack Prophet, President of the community based, non-profit social services agency Urban Strategies, LLC, will then negotiate with developers to craft the final community benefits agreement. This is the first time in the history of the development of Hempstead that residents will be able to have their input included in such a project. Those who know the history of our Village know that outside entities seeking to capitalize economically or politically within our community made many promises to us, promises that were ultimately broken. With this new project, we want to make current and future developers and stakeholders accountable and protect the Village from any further malfeasance. Bank of America discrimination National Small settlement: A result of subprime Business Week: 5 resources for swindle Opinion black by Ivory J. Johnson | December 22, 2011 at 8:50 AM It seems there are two types of thieves, the ones who break into your entrepreneurs house and steal your TV set and those who convince you to sign on the dotted line. Bank of America, who purchased Countrywide Financial Corporation in 2008, recently agreed to pay $355 million to settle charges that they discriminated against African-American and Hispanic borrowers. If you’ll recall, a subprime borrower is one who has experienced a poor history of payment management and has a low FICO score such that he or she must pay higher rates of interest to compensate the lender for the additional risk. Subprime loans were subsequently sold to investment bankers by the original lender, who then used them as collat-

eral for bonds known as mortgage backed securities. The subprime mortgage crisis disproportionately affected AfricanAmericans, for more than 40 percent of black borrowers received subprime mortgages in 2006 as opposed to one-fifth of white borrowers. In fact, an examination of 50,000 home loans by the Center for Responsible Lending found that blacks were a third more likely to get a highinterest loan than white borrowers with the same credit profile. Unfortunately, many of these loans were interest only loans or adjustable-rate mortgages that offered a low introductory rate, but increased in as early as a year from inception. Consider a typical $250,000, 3.5 percent adjustable-rate mortgage with a 2 percent ratehike cap. If the monthly payment is now $1,123, after the first adjustment, the monthly payment will be $1,419. After the second adjustment, the monthly payment will be $1,748 — a $625 per-month increase. That means that the homeowner had to come up with $7,500 more each year just to maintain the same mortgage. These predatory obligations had a catastrophic effect on entire neighborhoods of African-American households. Keep in mind that once a home is in foreclosure, the value of other houses nearby are stripped of equity and become depressed, making it difficult for otherwise qualified borrowers to refinance an adjustable rate mortgage into more affordable terms. It turns out that while young black men are stereotyped as serial criminals, influential banks were slinging mortgage backed securities from the street corners of lower Manhattan in broad daylight. Americans have been clamoring for retribution for what many consider to be fraudulent behavior by the banking industry. It should be mentioned that Bank of America has also settled for $20 billion with angry investors of subprime bonds, not to mention a $315 million settlement with investors who claim they were misled about bonds sold by Merrill Lynch, another troubled company purchased by the bank. It remains to be seen if such measures will serve as a disincentive to pursue unscrupulous business practices or represent yet another well rehearsed slap on the wrist. After all, Countrywide had net earnings of $674 billion from 2004-2007. There will be no commemorative DVD celebrating the bias settlement and it’s doubtful anyone will get their home back, but at least somebody was held accountable, and we all know that was far from a guaranteed. implemented for sugared drinks 16 ounces or more. This may not necessarily prevent people from continuing to purchase these products, but there will certainly be a decrease in sales. The real problem with making 16 ounce or larger sugary drinks illegal is that it is a contradiction – if you place a ban on sugary products because they lead to an increase in bad health, than there will be expectation on placing those same policies on fast food, drugs, and almost any other product. I’m sure you can find something unhealthy in almost any product now and days. Therefore, in order to avoid these complaints of unfairness, which is completely understandable, find a mid-

dle ground, which I believe would be to raise the tax on any sugar based beverages 16 ounces or larger. Therefore, the option is still available, but at a higher price. I cannot help however, with all these health oriented actions being carried out through the government lately, but feel disgusted. The government’s duty is to protect its people from financial hardships, imposing threats from outside countries, and so on; but now I feel that the government has to babysit us. Yes, they should most certainly be responsible for our protection against hazardous foods; however, they should not have to make sure that we keep from abusing ourselves with obsessive consumption. There needs to be a point where we as individuals have to realize that that responsibility should be on us alone, and not in the hands of others. Though I doubt the government is truly acting in concern for our safety, I truly hope so, but there is no denying that there true intention stems from budget. The more unhealthy people in the country, the more funds need to be put towards medical expenses. Seems ironic that in a recession we still manage to over consume unhealthy substances to the point where we will actually be putting ourselves further into recession. The question is, does America notice? And do we even care? I sure know the government does.

Chief Neil Delargy, who at the time of the secret report was the head of Internal Affairs. At issue is a still-secret 700-page Internal Affairs report about how police failed to protect Bird from her exboyfriend, Leonardo Valdez-Cruz, who stabbed her to death in March 2009.

According to the unsealed testimony, the second half of which had already been made public, Schmitt's defense was that he had read in Newsday much of what he said in the TV interview.

Among the police failures: Bird had orders of protection against Valdez-Cruz, but officers ignored her pleas for help; repeatedly refused to arrest him, and gave Valdez-Cruz, a police informant, a cellphone, which he used while in jail to harass her in dozens of calls.

"The whole situation was in the press constantly," he testified while being questioned May 31 by Millus.

Valdez-Cruz has since been convicted of murder and is serving a life sentence.

"It might have been better if I had not said what I said, but I said it," Schmitt testified.

The secret report was evidence turned over to attorneys for Bird's mother, who had sued the county in the federal court for wrongful death. The county has since paid a $7.7million settlement and conceded that what happened reflected "a breakdown in the system concerning domestic violence."With Gary Dymski

Schmitt's defense was that any disclosures were nominal and unintentional. In the testimony, Schmitt said he was "deeply disappointed" in the police. "Do you continue to believe this was a failure from top to bottom?" Millus asked him.

ASK LISA-ANNE Q. My son almost failed 4th grade this year. We got him extra tutoring and with the help of his dedicated teacher, he was able to make it through the rest of this school year. I am concerned that he will lose the new skills he has gained over the summer. How can I keep him from falling behind over the summer and prepare him for the next grade? A. It is so important to keep academic skills solid over the summer. Many children experience what’s called the ‘summer slump.’ When they return in September they appear to have never seen the tasks before. Keeping kids sharp academically, while they still enjoy the summer, is key to academic success. Kids are most vulnerable to lose the skills they learned in the last few months of school as there was less time to practice. The National Summer Learning Association reports that most students lose about two months of grade-level equivalency in mathematical skills over the summer months. Low-income students also lose more than two months in reading achievement. Keeping the previous skills in tact and learning some new things for the next grade, do not have to be expensive. Most bookstores have paperback books for various subjects and for various grade levels. Some have one big book for each grade. I would recommend focusing on reading, math and writing skills. Science and social studies are important subjects too, but if your child is deficient in reading skills, he/she will have difficulty reading about science and social studNASSAU COUNTY EDITION

ies. It’s very important to remember that it’s more beneficial to work on academics everyday for short periods than once a week for long periods of time. For your son’s age and grade, I think 2 hours per day is adequate. If he is way behind, he can practice 2 hours in the morning and then enjoy some free time and then an additional hour in the late afternoon to polish his skills. Get a small review 4th grade book for the first few weeks of summer and then introduce the 5th grade skills for the rest of the summer or combine them. You will be reteaching, teaching and preteaching. Here are some ideas you can use to assist you this summer: 1. Visit your local library and get your son a card so he can take out books to read. 2. Use indoor computer online time wisely with Math Playground, Funbrain, and Math Arcade, sites that turn math practice into pure entertainment. Coolmath4kids lets your number cruncher play games to learn times tables, decimals, and fractions. Visual learners can watch videos on teachertube that make learning fractions fun. During quiet time, slip science into your child’s nightly reading – see these recommendations of great science and nature books for your fourth or fifth grader. 3. Take advantage of the programs your library may offer for the summer. 4. Look for local churches that have small camps that provide academic support. 5. Do some simple science projects with your son that he can help create. 6. Visit local parks, the zoo, aquariums and museums as these build much needed vocabulary skills and teach science and history.

7. Take him grocery shopping with you and buy some new foods you’ve never had before and let him help you find recipes and help you cook. This again builds vocabulary and organization skills. He can also benefit from measuring and weighing as math skills. 8. Let him help you plant a garden in the backyard or in pots in an apartment window. 9. After all of these activities, encourage him to write about all he did that day. 10. Try the summer programs at school, Boys and Girls Club, community center or local Parks and Recreation Department. Summer activity programs give kids a place to learn new skills, make new friends and be active. 11. Limit TV and video game time to 2 to 3 hours per day! 12. Although kids won’t have school, they should still get enough rest each night so insist they are in bed early. 13. Summer is the perfect time for parents to take control of their family's health. Eating healthy and living active helps kids feel good, reduces stress, improves strength and increases selfesteem. 14. Let them read what they want. Unlike the school year, summer offers days and days of freedom to read what they want to, rather than having to read certain books. 15. Get audio, or readalong, books from your local library and play them during those long summer road trips. Reading along with the narrator is fun for the kids! The Plot to Demonize Black Youth - And Their Mothers, Too Are schools playing a key role in the criminalization of black children -- and their parents? April 6, 2012 | A disturbing trend is increasingly making national news in the United States: poor black mothers jailed for sending their children to schools outside their zoned school districts. The arrests of these mothers may seem novel, but given what we know about the criminal justice system’s propensity for arresting black adults and children at disproportionate rates, we shouldn’t be surprised. Not unlike truancy sweeps that target large numbers of black and poor children with legal sanctions for missing school, arrest for so-called “fraudulent enrollment” has become yet another avenue through which to target people of color. As it turns out, schools are playing a key role in the demonization of black children – and their parents. As data recently published by the federal Office for Civil Rights – and collected by the Department of Education – has shown, black students often face far stricter school disciplinary penalties than their white peers do. This new data documenting racial disparities in schools comes hand-in-hand with fresh information about arrests targeting black people in nonviolent, schoolrelated crimes (like fraudulent enrollment). We have seen a handful of stories about the latter phenomenon in national news media: black women, many of them poor, being arrested and charged with felonies for enrolling their children outside of their designated school district; they are alleged to owe thousands of dollars in back pay for school tuition deemed not legally theirs. In Connecticut, Tonya McDowell, a homeless black woman, recently pled guilty to fraudulent school enrollment. She was simultaneously convicted of drug possession and sales, and received a 12-year prison sentence. McDowell’s case was reminiscent of the plight of Kelly Williams Bolar, a black mother in Ohio who spent 10 days in jail for allegations of fraudulent school enrollment that were later dropped. Though her penalty was far less severe than McDowell’s, the message being sent was clear: beware to poor mothers who

borrow a relative’s or a friend’s address to send their children to a better public school. School districts and judges alike are clearly using these cases as examples to deter other parents from doing the same thing – and, in the process, keeping poor youth of color sequestered in the under-funded, often failing schools in the communities where they live. Looking at the newspaper images of the families charged with fraudulent enrollment, it would be easy to assume that black people are the only ones trying to enroll their children out of district. Yet anecdotal evidence suggests that small numbers of parents – some of them white -- have quietly been doing exactly the same thing for a long time, and without any such serious repercussions. Vanessa Gatsch is outraged that mothers are being taken away from their families for this kind of offense. “The mothers did what they did to provide the best possible education for their children. How is that terrible enough to take those children from their mothers, to break up that family?” She questions the logic behind bringing criminal charges against these mothers. “I just don’t understand how it’s stealing, because the state is supposed to be providing for your children regardless,” she says. Jessie Klein, a former school social worker, professor of sociology at Adelphi University and author of The Bully Society: Shooting and the Crisis of Bullying in America’s Schools, echoes these same concerns: “I mean, it’s so hard to get a good education for one’s child even in the best of circumstances. It’s an appalling trend. I barely know what to say – what mother wouldn’t do everything they possibly could to get their children in a good school? It took a jury about three hours to convict Jerry Valery, 41, of two counts of Burglary in the First Degree, two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, Attempted Robbery in the Second and Third Degrees, and Resisting Arrest. He was convicted yesterday and is scheduled to be sentenced by Judge David Sullivan on July 23. He faces a maximum of 25 years in prison.

Valery was confronted by the officers inside the rear of the home, and violently resisted arrest. Valery repeatedly threw punches at the officers and grabbed one of their firearm holsters before being Tasered and placed under arrest. Both officers were treated for minor injuries.

Rice said that at approximately 7:30 p.m. on November 22, 2010, Valery entered an Allen Avenue home by pushing in a dining room window air conditioner and proceeded to steal assorted jewelry and electronics, including a camera and a laptop computer. Valery tripped the home’s burglary alarm

The following is a breakdown of the charges faced by the 90 defendants:  44 defendants charged with prescription pill sales or possession with intent to sell  39 defendants charged with forged prescriptions and doctor shopping  3 defendants charged with pharmacy burglaries  3 pharmacy/hospital employees filling fraudulent prescriptions or diverting opioids for personal use  1 defendant charged with robbing a pharmacy The high number of arrests and prosecutions can be directly traced to the expert police work by NCPD officers and detectives and DA Investigators, and Rice’s policy to accept no plea bargain for pharmaceutical crimes without first debriefing defendants to obtain additional investigative leads. “We will not stand idly by while prescription drug abuse tears apart families and communities here in Nassau County,” Rice said. “We will continue to bust doctors and dealers who flood our neighborhoods with pills, aggressively prosecute violent users who rob and burglarize local pharmacies to get their next fix, and provide treatment options for those seeking help. The NCPD, DEA, and the US Attorney have been incredible allies and through ongoing cooperation, Nassau County will continue to be a national leader in this fight.” Nassau County Police Commissioner Thomas Dale said, “Using a multi-pronged approach of enforcement, prevention, and re-direction, we will continue to partner with the District Attorney’s Office and other law enforcement agencies to fight this prescription drug abuse epidemic and make our communities safer.” Of the 90 prosecutions initiated since January, 46 of those came as part of a multi-county prescription drug initiative led by United States Attorney Loretta Lynch, the results of which were announced earlier today. The initiative, which totaled 98 arrests, involved the filing of federal and state charges against defendants in Suffolk County, Brooklyn, Queens, and Staten Island, including the arrest of two doctors and a nurse practitioner.

Mendez, and another boy, 17-year old Denver “DC” Jarvis, have both confessed to their roles in the crime and been sentenced to 11 and 8 years in prison, respectively. Brewer has spent months in the hospital with second and third-degree burns all over his body. The burning took place when Bent approached Brewer and demanded that Brewer buy the video game from him. Brewer refused and walked home, and Bent followed him. Bent then tried to take Brewer’s bicycle and yelled threats at members of his family, even threatening his father to come out and fight. “He came to my house. He tried to take my dad’s bike. He threatened me. He threatened my sister. He goes, “Don’t worry, I got something for you and your friends, too,” Brewer told police. “It was because he wanted me to buy something from him that I didn’t want to buy.” Brewer’s parents told the school that they were keeping their child at home the next day because they were concerned for his safety. Brewer walked to a friend’s house the next day. One of the boys had some rubbing alcohol and showed it to the other kids. They then saw Brewer, where Bent confronted him. He was angry because he believed Brewer had snitched on him. “Michael was telling him, ‘I didn’t snitch — that was my dad and I told him to stop’,”Mendez said. After Brewer agreed to buy the videogame from Bent for $40, he tried to leave. “That’s when they’re like, ‘We should pour it on him just to mess with him,’” Kenny told police. “I thought they would pour it on him, kind of soak him, and then run. Just to mess with him.” They then doused the boy with lighter fluid and sparked a lighter near his body. “It was barely close to him and it just lit. It just sparked and the sparks got him and it just lit,” Mendez said. “The lighter, like, blew up in my hand, kind of.” A neighbor witnessed the incident taking place, and saw the boy outside burning alive. She then alerted police and he was saved. But before he could be saved, Brewer suffered enough burns that he has been in non-stop physical therapy. PAGE 34

Life Changing Words “Keep A Good Name Proverbs 22:1 KJV “A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches, and loving favour rather than silver and gold.” When we think about what is important in life today we never think to say a Good Name. We think more about riches such as cars, house, education, a great high paying job, or maybe even silver or gold. Let me however inform you about what the Lord says in His word (Bible), which is the infallible word of God. Meaning His word is true, doesn’t lie and never fails. Now let’s look at the way God sees things. God is not concerned with the inanimate objects of our life, as He is concerned about our person. He wants you to realize in all the things that He has created man is His most precious possession. He created you in His image and likeness and that alone is enough to give Him glory for. When you think about how important His name is and you are made in His image how important should yours be. Of course I am not saying that you should consider yourself or your name by no means equal to God or His name but you should care what people say and think when your name is mentioned. What are the true thoughts from the Body of Christ and even the secular world when your name is mentioned? Do they speak well of you or do they speak bad of you or do they just not say anything at all. What are you known for in your community are you a follower, a liar, a gossiper, or a peacemaker. Do you exhibit love or hate are you filled with jealousy and envy and strife follows you everywhere you go. These are some things that we need to evaluate in life to see where do you truly stand as a person. Is my name associated with good things or bad things? What is my character like? Am I known to have natural and spiritual morals or no morals at all? I am putting all of these questions out there so we can all think about what is important in life besides natural achievements. good name is very important and is more valuable then any riches will ever be. Many people think in life that it doesn’t matter what people think of me and that maybe true but let us take it a step further. When your name is mentioned in Heaven what does God think of you? We realize that we can never be perfect but we can press toward the mark to maintain a good name. LADY TIGERS LEARN LESSONS ON AND OFF THE FIELD By B. J. Robinson The 2012 Middle School Lady Tigers showed to be a confident group of girls that shared one goal, continue the winning tradition of Middle School Girl's Lacrosse in Hempstead. Over thirty five girls tried out for the team and Coach Graziosi and Coach Moran were able to keep twenty-four. Coach Moran, a math teacher at ABGS believes strongly that every girl who practices deserves to play. As a result, during each game, Coach Graziosi and Coach Moran devised a plan that would give every one a chance to play and grow. According to Coach Graziosi, an ELA teacher, who also coaches middle school football, “the girls worked very hard, and each day would continue to make strides to improve their fundamental skills. We felt that since everyone worked hard, everyone deserved to play.” During the season, there were more than a few stand out players. Treasure Hayes, an ABGS basketball star, averaged four goals a game. Kristina Callis, who had never played before earned the honor

of Most Improved Player by scoring 15 goals this season. The team’s Most Valuable Player was Shania Fenner, the goal keeper who averaged ten saves per game. Not only was she a wall in the net, but according to Coach Moran, “she is a true motivator who leads by example and showing teammates the meaning of determination.” Sonia Benitez, who played defense, is the school's Valedictorian who played in three sports this year while staying on the honor roll. What made this group special was their confidence. They earned a 5-3 record which shows that the middle school program is improving. The Lady Tigers played exceptionally well against Freeport, West Hempstead, Mal-

verne, and East Rockaway. The coaches are both proud of the effort and enthusiasm this team brought to every game. They hope some of the Lady Tigers work on their skills over the summer and they look forward to coaching some of the girls again next year.

Hempstead School District Celebrates Hempstead Tiger Success Administrators and coaches honor student-athletes during 2012 Athletic Awards Recognition Night The Hempstead School District ended the month of May by celebrating the outstanding 2011-2012 school year athletic accomplishments of the Alverta B. Gray Schultz Middle School and Hempstead High School Campus students during its Second Annual Athletic Awards Recognition Night. More than 200 people gathered in the campus’s Tiger Café to join the Hempstead Board of Education, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Patricia Garcia and District Athletic Director Dr. Robert Cincotta and his coaching staff as they recognized the talented Hempstead Tigers for demonstrating exceptional athleticism, dedication, sportsmanship and respect for the importance of teamwork this school year. During the award ceremony, high school athletes were presented with plaques, varsity letters, trophies and sports jackets for their accomplishments, and middle school athletes were bestowed with Project Safe Neighborhood Peacemaker awards and trophies for their achievements. The celebration also featured a keynote speech by Village of Hempstead Mayor Wayne Hall, as well as superb musical selections by the Hempstead High School Orchestra. The Hempstead Board of Education and Dr. Garcia congratulate all of the 2012 Athletic Awards Recognition Night honorees. Tiger Woods' agent arrested for DWI NEW YORK -- Tiger Woods' agent, Mark Steinberg, has been arrested on drunken driving charges in suburban New York. Police say Steinberg was stopped during a sobriety checkpoint Saturday night in Ardsley and arrested on DWI and aggravated DWI charges. Sgt. David Fisher says Steinberg, who told authorities who he was, was arrested after he was issued a field sobriety test. Police say his blood alcohol content was .18 percent. The legal limit in New York for DWI is .08 percent. Woods says he spoke to Steinberg before Sunday's final round at the Memorial. Woods, who won the tournament, declined further comment. Mangano Brings Professional Soccer Game to Mitchel Athletic Complex F.C. New York v. New York Red Bulls – June 30th at 7:00 p.m. Mineola, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano has announced that Nassau County will host a National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) game between F.C. New York and the New York Red Bulls at Mitchel Athletic Complex on Saturday, June 30th at 7:00 p.m. Spectators will be provided the opportunity to watch a mix of veteran talent and young athletes display their athleticism, ability, and aptitude to compete at the highest level. The event will include numerous pre-game activities including a meet and greet with players beginning at 4:30 p.m., free clinics and giveaways. About The National Premier Soccer League (NPSL) The NPSL is the successor to the Men’s Premier Soccer League (MPSL), which was formed in 2002. By 2005 it became necessary for the league to expand to a national format in order to accommodate teams from the Midwest region. The NPSL expanded further in 2007 by adding a Northeastern region. In 2011, with the addition of a Southeastern region, the National Premier Soccer League has truly become a nationwide league. Mangano’s Effort Saves the Games for a Second Year in a Row Uniondale, NY – Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano recently announced that the Nassau County Empire State Games for the Physically Challenged is continuing as scheduled this year till Saturday, June 2nd at the Mitchel Athletic Complex and Nassau Community College. County Executive Mangano formed the Committee to Save the Games in 2011 after New York State announced plans to eliminate all funding for the Empire State Games. The Committee successfully reached its fundraising goal due to the generosity of local businesses, schools, and citizens in the community. Opening Ceremonies took place May 31st at the Mitchel Athletic Complex. Competition and demonstrations are taking place today and tomorrow at Mitchel Athletic Complex and Nassau Community College. Athletes ranging in age from 5 to 21, who face a variety of disabilities, will compete in track, field, slalom, swimming, wheelchair basketball and table tennis. Closing Ceremonies will take place tomorrow, June 2nd, at Nassau Community College, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
