The Navesink Fight

T

here were numerous battles and skirmishes here in Monmouth County during the American Revolution. Some, such as the Battle of Monmouth, which took place in June of 1778, were full-scale battles involving thousands of troops. Others, such as the murder of Patriot militiaman Joseph Murray on his Middletown farm in 1780, were small and dreadfully personal events. Also, there were other smaller battles more accurately described as skirmishes, such as the Battle of the Navesink, which took place on February 13th, 1777, in what is now Highlands, NJ. Monmouth County was a place of divided loyalties during the American Revolution. Whether one supported the Patriot cause or stayed loyal to the British was, of course, a personal decision, but one’s preferences could largely be predicted by their religious and ethnic background, with exceptions. Generally, English settlers in Shrewsbury were largely Episcopalians, members of the Church of England in America, who tended to remain loyal to the British Crown. The Quakers were pacifists and thus largely stayed out of the fighting altogether whenever possible. Middletown was a mixed bag with some residents of largely English/Episcopal stock remaining loyal to Britain, while Methodists tended to be Patriots.

The Monmouth militia was composed of men from all walks of life. Most of them were farmers, but some were shopkeepers, blacksmiths, and merchants. They weren’t professional soldiers but were called upon to defend their communities when needed. These were the men who would have to face off against both the professionally trained regular British Army, one of the best-armed and disciplined fighting forces of the age, and against irregular Loyalist forces. These forces generally used more hit-and-run style tactics, but also tended

to be armed with bayonets, which were supplied to them by the British Army. This was an advantage because most Patriot militiamen were not supplied with bayonets, which put them at a disadvantage in a close-up fight. The militia relied on their smoothbore muskets, which they had to supply themselves.

140 men of the Monmouth militia were sent to Highlands and camped out near Portland Manor, the home of Richard Hartshorne.

They were commanded by Col. Nathanial Scudder, a doctor born in Freehold and a member of the Continental Congress.

A British vessel had run aground shortly before this incident, and the Patriots were hoping to capture its potentially valuable cargo. This all took place within sight of the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, which you can still visit to this day. The British, in turn, sent 200 men of the 26th Regiment to combat any Patriot forces in the area. The Regulars were aided by Col. John Morris of the New Jersey Volunteers, a local Loyalist unit.

The British landed in the Highlands in the early morning on February 13th in boats from their base on Sandy Hook, which was an island at the time. The Patriots were taken by surprise. They were able to form up, stand, and fight against the redcoats for some time, killing at least one of the enemy.

However, the British had sent some of their best men, grenadiers and light Infantrymen, in from the opposite direction and cut off the escape route for many of the Patriots, forcing them to surrender. Grenadiers were hand-picked for being the biggest and strongest men in a regiment, while light company men were the most aggressive and best shots in the regiment.

72 militiamen were captured, and several were killed. Col. Scudder escaped with about half of his men. He would later be killed fighting the Loyalists in 1781.

Tell us about the NJ Blind Citizens Association (NJBCA) and the Thrift Shop.

The NJBCA serves as a referral service for visually impaired individuals and provides lunch and a program every Thursday. The thrift shop helps to fund these programs and services. The thrift shop provides a source for local people to purchase clothes, home goods and décor, sporting goods, jewelry, garden items, games and puzzles, crafts, linens and more. It also provides a location for people to donate these items, giving them a second life and keeping things out of the landfills.

Items that do not sell or we cannot use are donated to other non-profits in the County. Beneficiaries thus far have included the ASPCA, Humane Society, Lunch Break, Goodwill, Office of Mental Wellness & Supportive Services – among others.

We also collect and donate eyeglasses to the Lions Club and collect non-perishable food that is donated to local pantries like Lunch Break, Beacon United Methodist Church, and Project Paul.

What inspired you to pursue this path?

Virna Broderick and I have reopened the thrift shop, which had been closed for a period. Virna and I both have extensive backgrounds in volunteering for non-profit organizations throughout the County, and have a passion for giving back and thrifting, so this was a perfect opportunity for us to do both.

What do you find most rewarding about your work?

We have found that providing a place for people to donate the items they no longer want and a place for people to buy quality and vintage items at affordable prices is very rewarding.

How has your work impacted the local community?

We reopened in January and are very pleased with the response from the community – so many people have commented about how happy they are that the thrift shop has reopened. We have both found this to be a rewarding experience thus far and look forward to continuing to provide this service to the community and hosting some special events this spring and summer. Our goal is to keep providing the community with affordable items for purchase and keeping as much as possible out of the landfills.

Triumph Restaurant & Brewery Old-School in All the Right Ways

riumph Restaurant & Brewery holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating brewpub in New Jersey, no small feat in a notoriously challenging industry.

It opened its flagship location in Princeton in 1995 and expanded to Red Bank in 2018. For 31 years, Triumph has lived up to its name as a stalwart through decades of fads and cultural movements.

It’s seen the recent drop in alcohol consumption (a 2023 Gallup survey found that adults under 35 who say they drink dropped 10 percentage points in two decades); the rise of GLP-1s (JPMorgan estimates weight-loss medications could cause a $30-55 billion dip in annual sales for the food and beverage industry by 2030); a work-from-home culture that cut into the all-important lunch rush (in 2024 the business tech platform Square reported spending for weekday restaurant lunches fell 3.3% compared to 2019); oh, and a worldwide pandemic (the National Restaurant Association reported in September of 2020 that nearly one in six restaurants across the country had closed either permanently or long-term).

How has Triumph kept the doors open?

“Good taste never goes out of fashion,” said owner

A quick history lesson: New Jersey regulations dictate that traditional breweries cannot serve food on their premises, a rule that has its origins in the prohibition era and leaves many out-of-state brewery patrons with empty bellies and forces those in the know to show up at their brewery of choice armed with takeout. Triumph, however, is one of the few eateries in the state that holds a license that allows it to both brew its own beer and serve its own food.

“What Triumph is at its core is a restaurant with a brewery inside of it,” said Rechnitz. “We have a sterling reputation for brewing in the state.”

Rechnitz is an alumnus of The Siebel Institute of Technology in Chicago, which is home to the oldest brewing school in the United States. His traditional brewing education is reflected in Triumph’s beer offerings.

“We still do what we know,” said Rechnitz. “We have an emphasis on lagers and have a fairly traditional approach to brewing.”

On their beer menu, you’ll find standards like the Keller Pils, a young unfiltered German lager, and a cask-conditioned English Pale Ale served via a traditional beer engine.

“A lot of new brewers want to use every color in the

crayon box,” he said. “After you do that for a while, you start to want to come back to the classics and the recipes that have withstood centuries.”

The menu is where things get a bit less traditional. The kitchen is the playground of executive chef Matt Grote, who studied at the prestigious Johnson & Wales University culinary program and worked under famed New England chef Jasper White.

“The menu is a bit more interesting than what people generally associate with a brewery,” said Rechnitz. “The world doesn’t need another bar serving nachos and wings.”

Instead, Triumph serves plates of grilled mahi, dusted with jerk spice, swimming in coconut crab broth and finished off with avocado green goddess mousse; and house-cured Scottish salmon sandwiches with citrus fromage blanc, cucumber, radish, a seven-minute egg, dill, and salmon roe.

A fair few of the herbs and edible flowers used in Triumph’s dishes and cocktails — from rosemary to nasturtium to borage, with their gorgeous purple blooms that have a cucumbery taste perfect for gin drinks — are grown in a raised bed outside of the Red Bank location by Rechnitz and his wife, Liz, who are both avid gardeners.

The real magic is when the food and beer and garden-fresh herbs come together for elegant pairings, like at Triumph’s Gambrinus Dinners, so

named for the mythical European “King of Beer.” The last Gambrinus dinner featured such fare as Pekin duck terrine with celery root, frisée, whole grain mustard, and cornichon, paired with Triumph’s Vienna Lager.

“The United States is one of the only countries in the world where beer is treated as the courser, shabbier sibling to wine and cocktails. There’s an expectation that it’s something to drink after mowing the lawn,” said Rechnitz. “The craft brewing movement brought a great deal of integrity to beer as a drink, but it still suffers from this stigma as not being a terribly serious drink.”

And Rechnitz predicts Triumph will stay the course for the next three decades by focusing on traditional, drinkable brews and elevated fare in a warm, service-focused setting. Said Rechnitz, “You don’t stay in business for 31 years by making a poor product.”

Regain Your Confidence When Returning to Sport After a Major Injury Phase 1: Protect Goal. Find balance between appropriate rest and challenging yourself.

Physical. The first one to two weeks after surgery, most surgeons will have you avoid moving the repaired area yourself. Instead you will be doing passive range of motion (PROM). This consists of a physical therapist moving the repaired area for you. At this phase, movements are usually not the most pleasant due to everything still being sore and tender. You might be thinking “shouldn’t I just rest and not move the repaired area?”

That is a good thought but movement through your pain-free range of motion is extremely beneficial; increased blood flow allows more nutrients to be moved into the affected area and decreased swelling to speeds up healing.

Mental. Most patients feel uncomfortable talking about their fears and worries when it comes to the injury. Athletes tend have a harder time mentally than physically. Take a deep breath and know that you will get better through all the ups, downs and plateaus.

Potential Challenges. During the first few weeks you will experience a lot of progress: increased range of motion, decreased swelling, increased sensation, and increased strength.

On the flip side, you might also experience increased pain.

This is in part due to your medication wearing off and your body realizing that it went through a traumatic event. Don’t get discouraged and understand that pain is expected and part of the healing process.

Phase 2: Re-engage Goal. Regain as much mobility and strength as possible while limiting potential for re-injury.

Physical. This is the stage that patients start to get their pre-injury range of motion back while also adding more strength based movements. You’ve moved past PROM and now you’re tackling AROM (active range of motion). As you become comfortable with AROM, weight training will be added in: from light bands to barbells and free weights. Everything should be challenging you to ensure you’re getting the most from your rehab. Listening to your body will be critical.

Do not push yourself through any pain but if something feels too easy, bump up the intensity.

Mental. You will go back and forth between feeling scared to push yourself and kicking it into high gear. During this phase, the likelihood of injury is low when you listen to your body.

Potential Challenges. Due to the reintroduction of AROM

and weight training, patients tend to feel like they might aggravate the injury and set themselves back to square one or even back to surgery. This is much more rare than you think.

Continue to push yourself without pain and with proper form to get yourself through this phase with minimal issues.

Phase 3: Return Goal. Return to sports Physical. This is the phase that most people yearn for. You should be hitting heavy weight, endurance training, power movements and sports specific drills. Rehab will look more like a training day: heavy compound movement, assault bike or rower interval work, plyometrics, and specific drills to your sport. Your body needs to be challenged at this point to endure the hardship that your sport demands or else you risk a chance of a new injury or re-injury.

Mental. Let go of the “I’m hurt” mindset and embrace being an athlete again. Work toward not even thinking about your injury but instead executing the action that’s needed of you on that field or mats without a moment’s hesitation.

Returning to sport after a major injury is a huge undertaking but it’s completely doable. Monmouth Medical Center Second Consecutive ‘Lantern’ Excellence Award Recognizes Emergency Department Successes in Reducing Wait Times, Optimizing Patient Flow

F

or Monmouth Medical Center’s Emergency Department, an initiative to reduce wait times has yielded impressive results, with patients experiencing a median wait time of just eight minutes to be triaged by a nurse and placed in an ED room, and just 15 minutes to be seen by a physician. For patients experiencing symptoms of a stroke or heart attack, the time from arrival to testing represent excellent, high-performance metrics that significantly beat national guidelines.

These impressive results recently helped earn MMC’s ED its second consecutive Lantern Award, making it one of just 96 hospitals in the United States to be honored by the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA). The ENA’s Lantern Award recognizes emergency departments that demonstrate exceptional and innovative performance in leadership, practice, education, advocacy, and research. It focuses on innovative practices and noteworthy attributes of the emergency department, collaborative approaches to delivering optimal care for patients, performance and outcome metrics, characteristics of the nursing team, and facility and emergency department demographics.

Lantern Award recognition distinguishes an emergency department’s commitment to quality, safety, and presence of a healthy work environment, says Sharmine Brassington, Ph.D., R.N., Assistant Vice President of Emergency Services and Nursing Resources at MMC. “Receiving this second consecutive Lantern Award recognition is such a great reward for our team,” she said. “Our team prioritizes patient care from the time of arrival and continually seeks to enhance care by improving throughput and reducing wait times and is committed to continuous quality improvement in emergency care. The Lantern Award serves as a visible symbol to our community that excellence is valued, and that exceptional care is provided in our Emergency Department.”

She noted that MMC’s ED was recognized for implementing a “throughput nurse” role to further optimize patient flow through an experienced, autonomous, and proactive nurse who focuses on expediting discharges, facilitating

admissions to inpatient units, and assisting triage during surges in ED volume. Among its national benchmark topping successes is a median 16-minute direct to CT scan for suspected stroke patients.

“The ED National guidelines for acute stroke care recommend a door-to-imaging time of no more than 25 minutes to determine treatment eligibility,” she said. “Achieving a 16-minute turnaround time represents high-quality care through direct-to-CT protocols, and efficient emergency department workflows to improve neurological outcomes.”

She also points to MMC’s achievement of a time of 4 minutes from arrival to testing for suspected heart attack patients.

“The American College of Cardiology Foundation/American Heart Association guidelines recommend an electrocardiogram within 10 minutes of arrival, so our current average of 4 minutes from arrival to ECG completion for STEMI (ST-elevation myocardial infarction) patients is considered an excellent, high-performance metric, significantly beating the standard guidelines.”

MMC’s Emergency Department has a dedicated Pediatric Emergency Department open around the clock and offered the region’s first Geriatric Emergency Medicine Unit and first peer-to-peer opioid recovery program in New Jersey.

he new Fetal and Adult Congenital Heart Center at Saint Peter’s Children’s Hospital offers children and their families, and adults access to comprehensive, minimally invasive cardiac care close to home. Renowned pediatric interventional cardiologist Dr. Rajiv Verma has joined Saint Peter’s Healthcare System to lead the new Center, bringing with him a decades-long record of clinical excellence in treating congenital heart diseases affecting children and adults. ongratulations on your pregnancy! You have probably already started researching tips to reduce morning sickness, scheduled your first sonogram to hear the baby’s heartbeat, and may have even started a list of names. But have you created a Birth Plan?

A Birth Plan serves as a guide for care during the childbirth journey. They have been around since the 1980s but have evolved from a simple wish list to an important communication tool that encourages discussion and learning about the childbirth process.

“Creating a plan gives you a chance to take an active role in the birth experience and shape what you would like that experience to be,” explained Pam Harmon, DNP, MSN, RNCNIC, director of the Women and Children’s Division at Saint Peter’s University Hospital in New Brunswick.

Plans can address a variety of preferences, such as: • Atmosphere: dimmed lights, music, aromatherapy, presence of family • Care Management: pain medication, continuous labor support (partner, doula) • Personal Care: oral hydration and light food (if allowed), breathing/relaxation techniques • Birthing Process: mobility during labor, using a birthing ball, stool or squat bar • Hydrotherapy: laboring in a tub or shower • Position Changes: walking, squatting, hands-and-knees • Fetal Monitoring: intermittent instead of continuous • Birth: timing for cutting umbilical cord, skin-to-skin contact, breastfeeding Meet with your physician or caregiver to discuss the plan and be flexible; plans may need to be altered along the way based on the health of the mother and baby.

“By the second trimester, start doing research on the best place to give birth, whether it is at a hospital, birthing center, or in a home environment,” said Harmon. Schedule a visit, speak to the staff, and ask for recommendations. “Make sure you are in the best place to take care of you and your newborn.”

She added, “We live in a society that sees pregnancy as normal, but unexpected things happen all the time. Educate yourself about the different levels of care provided (I Basic to IV Complex), and what it means to deliver at an accredited birthing center or a regional perinatal center.”

A review of studies looking at the effectiveness of birth plans by the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists (ACOG) found overall “higher satisfaction rates among patients who use a birth plan compared with those who do not” and higher “satisfaction with the birth experience for women with a birth plan.”

When you start your plan, doing initial research online is fine, there are many samples of Birth Plans available. However, in an era of AI Chatbots and social influencers, Harmon advises caution. “Information is not always accurate. Make sure to ask a medical or healthcare professional, do not rely on social media and the internet.”

Expectant parents are also encouraged to seek out educational programs and resources from trusted hospitals, birthing centers, and mother/baby organizations in your area. Take advantage of the many classes offered such as preparing for childbirth, breastfeeding and lactation, nutrition, pregnancy yoga, and even sibling classes. These programs help answer questions, expand knowledge, and along with a Birth Plan, better prepare you to welcome the newest member of your family.

Oakhurst’s Blue Swan Diner Has Been Keeping It Classic for Over 50 Years

he Blue Swan Diner in Oakhurst is about as classic Jersey as it gets, with its blue-andred neon facade, wood-paneled walls, and comfortable leather booths.

It’s the type of place where any born and bred New Jerseyan will feel right at home. And for its founders, the diner’s success represents their own personal American dream.

The Blue Swan diner was opened in 1974 by Greek brothers Elias and Emmanuel Lambrinos and their childhood friend Bill Eliades.

“The team worked long, hard hours, sacrificed weekends, holidays, and time with their families, to ensure the success of the business,” said Mario Magriplis, the current owner.

Magriplis is married to Maria Magriplis (née Lambrinos), the daughter of the original owner. Maria’s brother, Frank Lambrinos, also has a hand in running the diner.

“But the family couldn’t have made the Blue Swan the success it is without a town of loyal and heartwarming customers and a staff that has a true passion for what they do,” said Magriplis.

Magriplis also has a background in hospitality. He grew up in Canada and “in the kitchen” of his family’s business and later moved with his family to Greece, where they operated several hotels and restaurants. Magriplis went on to serve as the manager of the luxury commercial yacht RM Elegant.

Over the years, “We have definitely modernized our menu and built upon our creativity while keeping the essence of a diner well and alive,” said Magriplis. “We honor timeless classics, but also offer new and creative dishes that customers crave.”

“Timeless classics that have been our bread and butter for over 52 years and are executed flawlessly every single time,” said Magriplis.

Beyond the food, Magriplis credits the Oakhurst community for the diner’s longtime success.

“They have supported us through thick and thin and are part of the Blue Swan experience,” he said. “We know many of them on a first-name basis. They give us honest feedback and work with us to continually improve our product.”

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers: A Family Affair

P

eter Labib had dreams of operating his own restaurant long before he opened New Jersey’s sixth Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers in Holmdel. However, with a degree in engineering and 25 years of experience as a Software Engineering Development Manager at UPS, Peter thought this goal was a long way off.

“I love the customer service environment,” said Peter, who worked as an assistant manager at Burger King while getting his degree at New Jersey Institute of Technology. “I always wanted to go back to it.

I used to say that when I retired from UPS, I would open my own restaurant.”

But in 2024, Peter was a casualty of UPS’s mass layoffs, effectively ending his career in software architecture. It was then that he accelerated his “oneday” plan.

“I look at it as a great blessing,” said Peter. “I was able to start doing what I always wanted to do sooner than I thought.”

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers, founded in Kansas in 2002, is one of the fastest-growing national franchises in the United States. It’s known for its 100% lean ground beef steakburgers, cookedto-order with thin, crispy edges, as well as its proprietary Fry Sauce, a tangy twist on ketchup.

Peter said he vetted dozens of food concepts before deciding to become a Freddy’s franchisee.

His family has been involved with the business since the beginning. In fact, he first tried Freddy’s while dining with his youngest daughter, Gabby.

“I remember trying the Grilled Cheese Steakburger and being immediately impressed,” Peter says of the Freddy’s sandwich with two steakburger patties, bacon, American and Swiss cheese, and tomato spread on Texas toast.

Next, he brought his wife, Randa, and older daughter, Evy, to try Freddy’s. After all, if the family

was going to head their own Freddy’s, Peter wanted to ensure everyone loved the product. The two were immediately impressed, he said.

“As an engineer, I’m wired to look for standards,” Peter said. “But as a father and husband, I wanted a place my family could be proud of.

Freddy’s focus on the ‘guest experience’ and fresh product checked every box.”

Some of Peter’s favorites include the Jalapeño Pepper Jack Double, a spicy burger with fire-roasted jalapeños and jalapeño Fry Sauce; the Patty Melt, two steakburgers with Swiss cheese and grilled onions on toasted rye; the Cold Brew Caramel Crunch, vanilla frozen custard blended with cold brew coffee, Heath toffee bar, and caramel sauce; and the Strawberry Dream Cake, vanilla frozen custard with strawberry puree, cheesecake pieces, and cinnamon streusel.

Beyond the quality of the food, Peter is focused on creating a culture that values customer experience.

“We always call our customers ‘guests,’ because that’s exactly what they are,” he said. “I want to make sure everyone who comes here gets the best service.”

Randa now works behind the scenes at the restaurant, while Gabby and Evy work the front of house.

“As a dad, seeing both of my daughters working here, talking to guests as they come in, having real conversations with them. It’s very rewarding,” he said. “Being able to spend time with them at the workplace is so valuable. I learn from them, too, as they have different perspectives on things. They notice things that I don’t.”

And the Peter family isn’t content with just one Freddy’s location.

They’re expanding. Construction is officially underway for their second location in Freehold, slated to open this summer. Two more Monmouth County sites are also in the works, along with an eight-unit expansion planned for Southeast Florida.

As Peter grows his restaurant portfolio, he’s dedicated to maintaining the same quality and customer service that make his Monmouth restaurant so successful.

“I didn’t want to just open a business,” said Peter. “I wanted to bring something exceptional to the community.”

After More Than a Decade, the Asbury Park Jazz Fest Is Back

A

fter more than a decade away, the Asbury Park Jazz Fest is returning on Sunday, June 28, 2026. The free, full-day concert runs from noon to 8 p.m. at Sunset Park, 1305 Main Street, and is open to the public.

The festival ran for more than 15 years before going on hiatus, and is coming back by popular demand. This year’s event is made possible by a grant from the Asbury Park Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ).

The 2026 lineup features eight hours of back-to-back performances from Marel Hidalgo, Ultrablue, Antoine Knight, Reza Khan, Nick Steffanaci, Dee Brown, Ragan Whiteside, and Paula Atherton.

“You know, people never stopped talking about Jazz Fest. I’d run into folks around town and they’d say, ‘Mayor, when’s that coming back?’ So I’m really glad we can say — it’s back.

Exploring Local Agriculture: A Guide to Fresh Produce and Events

une is National Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Month, and we are exploring Monmouth County’s local agriculture, spotlighting where to source the best produce. Take note: our state is a top producer of blueberries, spinach, and tomatoes.

Asparagus, arugula, beets, cherries, raspberries, and other leafy greens are also at their peak flavor in early summer.

And while there are a myriad of local farm stands and outdoor markets that support the farming community, below you’ll find a few off-the-beaten-path options to explore, such as the Monmouth County Park System, which hosts programs that support local produce.

There’s Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown, which offers workshops and classes for home gardeners, Farm Buds and Grow With Love, a youth-oriented program for ages 3 to 5, and Community Food Connection, an Interfaith Neighbors initiative that purchases produce from local NJ farms for distribution to over 35 food pantries.

180 Turning Lives Around Raises $500,000 at 2026 Gala Turning Lives Around celebrated a successful evening of philanthropy and community support at its 2026 Gala, All That Glitters Is Gold, raising $500,000 to benefit survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, and other forms of trauma. The event was held on Thursday, April 23, 2026, at Rumson Country Club.

The annual gala brought together supporters, partners, and community leaders in a shared commitment to advancing 180’s mission. Proceeds from the event will support the organization’s comprehensive, survivor-centered services, including 24/7 hotlines, counseling, advocacy, and its 21,000-square-foot Safe House.

The evening honored Bob Garrett and the Hackensack Meridian Health Team as a Corporate Partner Honoree, along with Community Partner Honorees Monmouth Park Charity Fund and Mayor Tony Perry of Middletown, in recognition of their longstanding commitment to supporting survivors and strengthening the community.

“The community truly came together to support the individuals and families we serve,” said Liz Graham, CEO of 180 Turning Lives Around. “As we celebrate 50 years, remember what this work truly means. It means getting back up. It means taking risks. Because that is the only way to make sure survivors hear what they need most: you are not alone.”

Christina Zuk, Board President, welcomed guests and recognized the organization’s partners and honorees during opening remarks. “Tonight, we celebrate that extraordinary legacy and the countless lives that have been transformed because of this community’s support. The evening began with a cocktail hour featuring music by Scott Elk, followed by a program emceed by Graham. One of the most powerful moments of the evening highlighted the strength and resilience of survivors, underscoring the critical importance of 180’s services and the impact of community support.

Auctioneer Nick Dawes led a lively auction and “pledge for progress,” with a standout moment marked by a $50,000 leadership gift from Carol Stillwell, inspiring further generosity from attendees. Guests also participated in silent and live auctions featuring items such as diamond earrings donated by Wolf Fine Jewelers and an exclusive Turks & Caicos trip provided by Melissa Lowry.

The celebration continued with music and dancing led by Brian Kirk & the Jirks, as guests gathered in support of a shared mission to create safer futures for survivors and their families.

Slow and Steady Ocean Township Physical Therapist Talks Athlete Health

T

he life of an athlete can be taxing. No one knows this better than physical therapist Brian Mullins. Raised in Bergen County, Mullins moved to Ocean Township in 2001. His path to physical therapy, however, began while he was a pre-med student in college. Originally focused on becoming a physician, everything changed during a wrestling match in which Mullins tore his knee. This became his initial exposure to athletic training and physical therapy — and he began to wonder where it could take him. In 2003, he opened his practice, Eastern Monmouth Physical Therapy (EMPT), in Neptune before relocating it to Ocean in 2016.

What is the most prominent inspiration for becoming a physical therapist? The patients. “I didn’t see physicians spending much time with patients, as a physical therapist a spend a great amount of time with each patient,” Mullins says. “I spend two to three hours a week with a patient and really get to know them, what’s important to them, and you get to see them progress, get better and reach their goals. I can talk them in, off that ledge when they think everything’s gone wrong.”

At EMPT, Mullins treats an array of patients, from those living with Parkinson’s and MS to those dealing with back, neck, and head pain. However, he always saw himself becoming more specialized. With that in mind — and driven by a passion for sports — Mullins has increasingly focused on working with athletes, developing East Coast Movement Performance Institute.

“I’ve always worked with athletes. I always thought I did a better job because I wanted to ensure that they weren’t getting reinjured.” Mullins explains that the reinjury rate among athletes actually far outpaces the initial injury rate. This is especially critical for student athletes — particularly female athletes, who are five times more likely to suffer knee injuries than males due to anatomical and biomechanical differences.

“The sense of injury can be devastating for the athlete.

It’s bad enough to be injured once…60% of athletes who rupture their ACL don’t return to the sport, and it’s their whole identity.” His goal is to ensure that athletes can return to the track, field, or court stronger than they were before.

If an athlete returns to sport too early, the consequences can be severe. Mullins aims for more than just recovery: “Most PTs get you back to where you were before you were injured. But, most of the time, those [athletes] weren’t strong enough to perform those movements to begin with. We work to get the athlete beyond where they were beforehand.”

Young athletes often compare themselves to professional and Division I athletes who return to play just weeks after injury. What they don’t realize is the level of support those athletes receive. “When parents and athletes hear this, they think they can do the same, but they’re in therapy twice a week, and they’re in school compared to the professional athlete who is in rehab seven days a week. The reality is: After suffering significant injuries like an ACL rupture which requires surgery, most athletes shouldn’t go back to sports until nine months after surgery, and that’s with significant rehab and return to sport training.”

Years ago, the goal was to get athletes strong within a few months, declare them “good to go,” and send them back — often leading to reinjury. Mullins

states, current research illustrates a different approach, utilizing objective measures ensuring athletes regain at least 80% strength in the injured leg before even returning to running.

Mullins also offers advice for student athletes looking to prevent injury and build strength: “You’re not working out as hard as you think you are.” In the age of social media, misinformation about physical health is widespread.

Simply completing a workout routine doesn’t mean it’s being done correctly

or effectively. “It takes a lot to achieve your goals, like anything else in life. If you want to be a D1 runner or play football for a D1 team, it takes a lot of commitment and drive and discipline from a very young age to get to that level.”

Mullins hopes his expanded focus will attract athletes who want to build strength before injury occurs. “I can challenge [uninjured patients] more, and they get excited about that. It’s a more upbeat environment because they want to be here, not because they have to be.” He recalls working with a Red Bank Catholic athlete, helping refine her running mechanics — ultimately leading to her acceptance onto her college’s cross country team, where she contributed to a championship season and achieved a personal best.

Looking ahead to the summer, Mullins encourages athletes to train in preparation for the fall season. With proper strength and focus, the results speak for themselves. As Mullins puts it: “They thrive.”

Buckle Up! Drazin and Warshaw Talks Rideshare Accidents

razin and Warshaw, nearing their 80th anniversary, is a leading law firm in Monmouth County — especially for those seeking top-tier representation in personal injury and medical malpractice law. Justin Drazin has been with the firm for about seven years, joining his father and two uncles. As summer approaches, Drazin looks ahead and elaborates on what the firm prioritizes as the sun gets higher and the weather gets warmer.

What Drazin has observed, however, is an increase in a particular kind of injury: those derived from rideshare transportation. “More recently, I’ve taken a strong focus on rideshare accidents, primarily Uber and Lyft,” Drazin explains. “What we’re seeing in the last couple of years is the increased prevalence of people — especially in Central Jersey and the Jersey Shore communities — using rideshare as a means of transportation in the spring and summer months. We’ve had an uptick in accidents involving people using those services.”

Drazin as an emerging authority in the area. He has lectured for the New Jersey Association for Justice on rideshare accidents and prosecuted claims for individuals who use these services.

There are several key factors that differentiate rideshare accidents from typical car accidents. The primary difference lies in the insurance coverage from the company itself (for example, Uber), including liability coverage, medical expense coverage, and the po-

tential liability of a third party, such as another driver involved in the collision.

“What I tell clients initially when they contact us after a rideshare accident is to be mindful that the company is protecting its own assets first,” Drazin says. “Any communication they have with you after your accident is focused on protecting themselves, not you. Be mindful of who you’re speaking to and what you’re saying. You don’t want your words to be used against you if you decide to pursue a claim.”

Drazin also offers practical advice for rideshare passengers: make sure the person picking you up matches the driver in the app. “If you have any questions about who the driver is, you should ask to see their credentials before you begin the trip.” He also recommends checking that child safety locks are not engaged, wearing a seatbelt, and avoiding distractions for the driver.

Local Architect Receives the Smithsonian National Award for Emerging Designer

e sat down with Lindsey Wikstrom, architect, author, and founder of Mattaforma, who now resides in Atlantic Highlands. Wikstrom was recently awarded the Smithsonian National Design Award for Emerging Designer.

Connecting to Nature Mattaforma was founded on the principle of cultivating new relationships with nature through architecture. “We bring together plant life, plant-based materials, and found materials to create environments that grow and adapt,” said Lindsey. “Every project starts with what already exists on a site: the land, the light, the structures. Red Bank Dispensary Reflects a Move Toward Everyday Cannabis

ust a few years ago, cannabis use was largely taboo. As both medicinal and recreational use have expanded following legalization — especially in New Jersey — that stigma has steadily begun to fade. At the same time, the way people think about cannabis is evolving.

It starts with a different kind of question.

Not “What’s the strongest thing you have?” But: “What can I take to unwind at the end of the day?”

That shift — from intensity to intention — is what defines the experience at Canopy Crossroad, a women-owned, locally operated dispensary in Red Bank that opened in October 2024.

Caryn Cohen, a longtime Red Bank resident and medical marijuana user, partnered with her husband to bring the

We’re an education-led dispensary, built and operated by locals — not industry insiders, but people from this community who want to make cannabis more approachable and offer a more thoughtful, wellness-focused option in Monmouth County.”

That philosophy extends beyond the store itself.

With the launch of its delivery service, the CannaSedana, Canopy Crossroad has created a secure, discreet way for customers to access cannabis from home. Orders are delivered by trained staff via private vehicle, maintaining the same level of care, professionalism, and privacy that defines the in-store experience.

“We’re meeting people where they are,” Cohen says. “For some, that means coming into the store. For others, it means having a trusted, discreet option delivered to their door.”

Inside the store, that same approach shapes every interaction.

Rather than focusing on potency or trends, conversations center on outcomes — better sleep, stress relief, or simply finding a more balanced way to unwind. The emphasis is on helping people choose something predictable, manageable, and aligned with their daily lives.
