Mission

The Division of Student Affairs fosters a vibrant campus community that promotes student excellence, invites collaborations and discovery, provides educational programs and services that are meaningful, and empowers students to contribute to the advancement of local and global communities. The Division actively enhances integrative learning environments that are safe, supportive, challenging, and inclusive.


Letter from the Vice President for Student Affairs The Columbus State University Division of Student Affairs is proud to present its annual report for 2015-2016. This document highlights the array of quality services, educational and co-curricular programs, and positive contributions provided through the diverse departments that comprise this division. Student Affairs’ dedicated and talented professionals work as a cohesive team in support of student success. We partner with colleagues across the institution to ensure stellar support services and programs that directly support student recruitment, retention and progression. The 2015-2016 academic year was a notable one. We successfully implemented a mandatory online sexual assault prevention and alcohol education program for first-year students. We also experienced another record year of programming in Diversity Programs and Services, which included hosting the largest-ever Legacy Banquet in partnership with the CSU Diversity Forum. We put the finishing touches on our state-of-the-art, first-year student residence hall. These are just a few examples of the division’s success stories made possible by the hard work and commitment of our staff in collaboration with campus colleagues. Thank you for your partnerships and contributions. Our priority has always been, and continues to be, student success. I am especially grateful to my colleagues within the Student Affairs Division and our amazing students. They make Columbus State University the very special place it is. Campus Recreation Mission

The Department of Campus Recreation is an integral and active service of the diverse university community, which supports and strengthens the mission of Columbus State University. Our purpose is to provide growth opportunities, educational experiences, and inspire healthy lifestyle choices through quality recreation activities and facilities that enrich the lifelong learning process of our students. Participating in Campus Recreation programs and activities will contribute positively to the overall wellness of the students, faculty, staff and other members of the Columbus State University community.

The Department of Campus Recreation features 2 Basketball Courts, 2 Racquetball Courts, 2 Aerobic Rooms, Workout Areas, Free Weights and Machine Weights Areas, a Walking/Running Track, 37-Foot Climbing Wall and a Bouldering Area. There is also a Multipurpose Court, which can be used for large meetings, social events and Indoor Sports including soccer, volleyball and dodgeball. The Aquatic Center has a 5-lane 25 Yard Lap Pool, a OneMeter Diving Board, a Leisure Pool with a Lazy River, a 40-person Therapy Pool, and a Sauna Room. In addition to overseeing the facets of the facility, the Campus Recreation team oversees 7 Club sports and 7 Intramural sports.

• 1, 100 Students participated in intramural sports • 2,529 Memberships sold to Faculty, Staff, Alumni, Spouses, and Affiliated members • Average of 100+weekly participants in group fitness classes • Introduction of stand up paddle board and yoga to fitness programming options • Men’s and Women’s Basketball Teams finished in the Final 4 of the National Basketball Tournament hosted by the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association Championship Series • Physical Education Department Activity Classes (PEDS) Lifeguard Training, Beginning and Intermediate Swimming Classes and Kayak were offered. 6 students completed Lifeguard training, and 20 students completed Kayak courses • Over 140,000 people swiped into the Campus Recreation Center during the 2015-2016 academic year

Tier Wootson Recreation Center Tier Wootson knows how to connect to her alma mater using the gift of campus gab. Her field of study at Columbus State University: communication and mass media. “I chose CSU because of its up-and-coming communication program at that time,” said the now second-year master’s of business administration student. “When I visited the school, it had a home vibe that captured me. I made my decision that day that CSU was going to become my school.” Between studying radio, TV and business, the Warner Robins, Georgia, native also found time to work at the university’s Student Recreation Center throughout the course of her undergraduate and graduate career. “I love working at the recreation center because of the different people I meet and the relationships I build,” said Wootson. “I’ve learned a gym is a business. So, I have learned a lot of business techniques and how business decisions are made.” After once serving as supervisor for the recreation center and now as its program assistant, Wootson also finds time to volunteer with Big Brothers, Big Sisters in the community. “I’ve learned many managerial styles working with a diverse group of people,” she said. “By working at the recreation center for years now, I have developed skills I will carry into my career in media and business.” Despite hectic work and study weeks, Wootson already understands the benefits her educational and work experiences will bring after graduation. “My experience has been a whirlwind because with ups, comes downs, but through all of it, I am grateful and thankful.” Wootson said. “CSU has and always will be my first choice.”

Career Development

(including the Office of Community Outreach)

Mission The Center for Career Development strives to enhance student success through the development and implementation of experiential learning opportunities aimed at career preparation and life skills competencies.

The Center for Career Development (CCD) consists of four components; Career Development, Employer Connections, Community Outreach, and Financial Success, which initiated and implemented multiple opportunities for students. CCD took the lead on assisting 240 students develop career skills through soft skills development workshops. Over 100 students participated in the new Employer Exploration Road Trips to Pratt & Whitney, TravelPort and NCR. During these trips, students met with employers participated in “behind the scenes” tours, and networking receptions. The Office of Community Outreach (OCO) successfully completed the process for a CSU to become a certified institution for the President’s National Volunteer Service Award. Fourteen students were inducted the first year. Additionally, OCO launched the Food Pantry to assist students with food insecurities.

• Created the Cougar Career Track to assist with career preparedness and soft skills • Implemented a Financial Success peer mentor program • Created a QEP Career Readiness certificate program with 30 student participants • 1,146 jobs and Internships/co-ops posted for students in College Central Network • 833 students received assistance with resumes via appointment, drop-in hours, and electronic submission • Gained over $20,000 in corporate sponsorships for the Center for Career Development and the Financial Success Program • 525 participants in the Annual Day of Service • 344,359 logged students volunteer hours • $14,066 raised during Cougarthon,and became certified Children’s Miracle Network event in partnership with the national Dance Marathon 6

Kaitlynn Powell Volunteer Services Kaitlyn Powell offers her help at any — and almost all — volunteer opportunities afforded at her first-choice university: Columbus State. “CSU was my first choice because of its great teaching program,” said the junior education major from Buena Vista, Georgia. “It’s also close to home. I get to live at home and save money.” Between classes and studying, Powell commits as much time as possible to campus activities, including serving as vice president of programs with Delta Zeta Sorority; studying as a Honors College student; leading as a community outreach ambassador; working as finance director for Cougarthon; and participating on CSU’s homecoming committee. “The Community Outreach Ambassadors started a food pantry here on campus for students in need,” said Powell. “All donations we receive are from students, faculty and staff. We are also partnering with Feeding the Valley to bring in different ideas for how we can grow our pantry.” To Powell, the newly established Food Pantry Program is the highlight of Community Outreach and a program she is equally passionate about. “The food pantry is our main focus,” she said. “It is a newer program we’ve initiated, so getting the word out about it and getting people to donate to it is what we are doing right now. At the moment, we have up to several people who get things from it weekly. We know the need is there.” Powell sums up her time at CSU as a beneficial learning experience. “I’ve gained so much new knowledge in my three years here,” said Powell. “Not only has the experience helped me to become a better teacher, but it’s shaped me to become an all-around better person. Working with other people has opened my eyes to more than one way of thinking.”

Counseling Services Mission

The Counseling Center is staffed by mental health professionals and mental health professionals-in-training. Primarily, it serves the students of Columbus State University in overcoming the issues which may be blocking their growth and keeping them from reaching their individual potential. This is achieved via mental health and career counseling, learning disorder assessment, and educational outreach. Secondarily, the Counseling Center provides consultation and referral information to the staff, faculty and parents of CSU as they support their students.

This year, the Counseling Center continued to partner with campus and community partners to provide education and support with various facets of mental health. Over six hundred students received personal or career counseling, or participated in the LGBTQ+ and Alliance support group. The Counseling Center offered Academic Retention Workshops, which focused on career/life planning, anxiety reduction, learning issues, and academic survival.

• Dr. Cheryl Yatsko was a panelist with the Keeping Our Schools and Community Safe Forum, which was hosted by CSU’s National Alliance on Mental Illness, moderated by Roslyn Giles of WTVM, and included panel members from Muscogee County Schools, Troy State University, and the City of Columbus • The Counseling Center partnered with CSU’s Counseling Masters’ Program to provide group therapy to students in the program • The Counseling Center partnered with the Athletics Department to provide group therapy to the CSU Women’s Tennis Team •

The Counseling Center continued to partner with The CSU Master’s in Counseling, The Auburn PhD in Counseling Psychology, and The Argosy PsyD in Clinical Psychology programs to provide practicum experiences for their master’s and doctoral level graduate students. Seventeen interning clinicians provided individual, group and couple’s psychotherapy, as well as outreach for CSU students, attending Psychotherapy Seminar, and receiving clinical supervision from The Counseling Center senior staff

Dean of Students

Mission

The Dean of Students Office is committed to the mission of Columbus State University and the Division of Student Affairs by providing a safe, enjoyable, and successful college experience. The Dean of Students Office serves as an advocate for students and as a centralized resource for connecting students with appropriate university and community programs, offices and individuals. The office supports students in resolving educational, personal and other university concerns that affect the quality of their academic or community life and personal goals.

Office of the Dean of Students (DOS) provides multiple services to ensure that CSU students live in a community that upholds the core values of excellence, engagement, creativity, servant leadership, inclusion, and sustainability. Office of the DOS oversees: • The Student Government Association • Student Advocacy/Ombudsman • Medical/Hardship Withdrawals & Readmission • Judicial Affairs • Alcohol and Drug Education Programs and Title IX Training

• Columbus State University’s Chair of BART, Dr. Aaron Reese, was selected to be the National Behavioral International Association (NaBITA) chair for 2015-2016 academic year. •

Columbus State University hosted a Title IX Investigator training with the Association of Title IX Administrators (ATIXA). Columbus State University has nine certified Title IX Investigators. Columbus State University served as a resource to other University System of Georgia schools in the implementation of Everfi (Haven and AlcoholEdu) courses

• Assistant Dean Dana Larkin was elected as the Recorder for the 2016-2017 Regents Advisory Committee- Student Conduct Officers • 560 cases were processed in AY 2016 by the Office of the Dean of Students • 4,433 Haven on-line courses completed • 3,769 Alcohol EDY on-line courses completed • 1,500 students participated in RAINN Day, Speak up, Speak Out, and Sexual Assault Responsibility Week • 6 class presentations for 150 students regarding CSU Community standards and sexual violence, judicial processes and alcohol and drug policies

Disability Services Mission

The mission of the Office of Disability Services (ODS) is to offer programs and services that ensure students with disabilities have the full educational, social and developmental opportunities that allow them to reach their potential and to compete in a global workforce upon graduation.

The Office of Disability Services (ODS) coordinates Columbus State University’s compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990. The team in Disability Services work in concert with Academic Affairs to create learning environments tailored to the particular documented physical, psychological, or cognitive disabilities. The services available to students include: • Explanatory letters to instructors • Adaptive technology • Accommodations assessment • Priority Registration • Brooks in Alternate format • Braille Services • Sign Language Interpreters

Residence Life Mission

Residence Life is committed to providing a safe and secure living environment that promotes the social and personal development of our students. We provide well maintained facilities, knowledgeable staff, and intentional programming. We support the University and Division’s vision of creating an environment in which students can achieve their full academic potential.

The Office of Residence Life provides more than just a place to sleep, we provide experiences for students that are guided by intentional learning outcomes in the areas of academic achievement, diversity and civility, engagement and discovery, and personal development. Residence Life Department is comprised of nine housing options between the Main and RiverPark Campuses. Edna Hamilton Residence Life Making sure her colleagues’ living experiences on campus became memorable ones is what motivated graduate student Edna Hamilton to continue to contribute to Residence Life at CSU. Hamilton started her journey with the university’s Residence Housing Association four years ago and still enjoys the sense of community it brings. “My experience with Residence Life has been nothing but exemplary,” she said. “Being a part of this department has allowed me to break out of my shell and not be afraid to voice my opinion.” After joining Residence Life, the Stone Mountain native moved up to student assistant then president of the Resident Housing Association for two years. Her highlight of every workday on campus: the people. “I love coming into work and seeing everyone with a smile on their face and a good attitude,” said the science graduate student. “Everyone is so open and easy to talk to.” Hamilton first earned a bachelor’s degree in science at CSU then returned to earn a master’s degree in science. She graduated in May 2017. She also attributes her work with students, faculty and staff in Residence Life to building meaningful relationships inside and outside of the classroom. “This department has opened many doors for me and allowed me to meet so many people” said Hamilton. “This experience was phenomenal because of the amount of good people and lifelong friendships I have gained.”

Student Health Mission

The Student Health Center at Columbus State University is committed to delivering our diverse student body with high quality health care, disease prevention and health education through trust based accessible and affordable services. The Student Health Center in collaboration with credentialed health care providers provide a comprehensive level of care that helps students achieve maximum physical health, reach their academic goals, and become responsible health care consumers.

Student Health Services delivers quality health care and health education to our campus community. The staff consists of professional nurses, doctors and a physician assistant, who create a nurturing environment where students can easily seek professional medical assistance. In addition to general medical care, Student Health Services offers students vaccines, flu shots, and some prescription medications. All health insurance plans are accepted by Student Health Services.

• The Student Health Center implemented a student check in system. The confidential kiosk allows students to check in without waiting • The Student Health Center participated in the 2016 Sexual Health Awareness Campaign sponsored by the Georgia Department of Public Health and the Centers for Disease Control. The supplies and testing were free to the University Student Health Center. Jabari Scott Student Life Any major student event happening on CSU’s campus most likely involves Jabari Scott working behind the scenes to make things happen. “Connections among students are crucial in building a better bond here at CSU,” said Scott. “I love that I’m able to help whenever help is needed and push students in the right direction.” The senior criminal justice major from Decatur, Georgia, serves as director for Student Activities Council where he helps develop activities that continue to create an inclusive campus. He also is involved in Collegiate 100, ROAR Orientation Team and Student Ambassadors. “I’ve met good friends who I may have never talked to if it weren’t for these organizations,” said Scott. “I met one of my closest friends, and gained new relationships and perspectives about different people.” These Student Life-related organizations also have afforded Scott educational experiences outside of campus. “I’ve gone to conferences, represented CSU at the capitol, won awards like the Who’s Who Award,” said Scott. “CSU gave me the opportunity to meet amazing faculty, staff, and students. I wouldn’t trade this experience for anything.” Scott sums up his college career at CSU in one word: growth. “The connections I’ve made have helped me grow as a person and leader,” he said. “Columbus State is truly the hidden gem out of all universities in Georgia. I’m glad I started and stayed here.”

The Department of Student Life and Development at Columbus State University promotes involvement, learning, and success through intentional programming and developmental opportunities. Realizing that student development occurs through collaboration of all areas of campus life, Student Life encourages partnerships with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and the Columbus community to enhance engagement for Columbus State University. We will work to foster an inclusive environment for both Riverpark and Main campus students through diverse and innovative events.

Cylina Velazquez Student Life Cylina Velazquez is all about expansion — especially in broadening her knowledge. “Columbus State University was my first and only choice,” said the senior marketing major. “I have always considered myself a homebody, but some of my best experiences throughout my college career have come from my work in Student Life. It has provided plenty of opportunities to travel and expand my learning outside of the classroom.” Velazquez has worked in Student Life for five years and considers it her home away from home. “Student Life believed in me,” she said. “The office believed in me when I did not believe in myself. This office has given me the confidence to move mountains.” Her connection to Student Life has given her a better understanding of campus, its traditions and student engagement opportunities. With the help of Student Life, she became involved with National Association for Campus Activities (NACA), where she created her favorite experiences and developed better marketing skills. “The cool thing about NACA is that you are submerged with other student activity board members and you get to see acts, artists and speakers who want to perform at your school,” she said. “NACA truly helped me grasp what I wanted to do with my marketing degree. I love everything about event planning and marketing events within higher education.” In addition to her involvement with Student Life, Velazquez also has served as a board member of the Student Activities Council; director of Student Activities Council; and student assistant for Student Life and Development. Within Student Life, she has worked with Residence Life, Cougarthon and the Special Events Committee as the homecoming co-director. “To me, CSU in one word: home,” she said. “I found a place where I belong. I met friends who became family. I had faculty/staff members that I could trust and talk to each day. CSU developed me into who I am.”

University Police Mission

The mission of the Columbus State University Police Department is to complement and support the University’s goals by providing a safe environment conducive to learning, research, and related work/ activities through professional community policing. Creating this atmosphere allows all who visit the campus or university facilities to do so with minimal distractions.

The University Police Department (UPD) is a fully authorized state police agency serving both the main and RiverPark campuses. The department consists of four distinct divisions: Patrol: The Patrol Division of University Police consists of officers trained to protect and serve the CSU community. Operating year-round, 24 hours per day, the Patrol Division strives to preserve CSU’s campus as a safe, secure learning environment. Criminal investigation: The Criminal Investigation Division operates as a full-scale detective bureau, equipped to handle a wide variety of investigative tasks. CID officers are responsible for following up and investigating crimes reported to University Police, as well as numerous administrative tasks. Training: The Training Division oversees field training for new officers, once they have completed the police academy. The Training Division staff also organizes in-service training for department personnel and additional police training outside the department for certified officers. Communications: The Communications Unit of University Police serves the university community 24 hours a day, seven days a week, dispatching officers and others to police, fire and medical calls for service. Other duties of the unit include emergency dispatch, responding to national and Georgia Crime Information Center inquiries and telephone communications.

They collected over 7,000 toys, stuffed animals, coloring books, and other items that were distributed throughout the community • Hosted a Department of Justice sponsored Civilian Response to Active Shooter Event Train the Trainer class Over 100 participants representing 55 different federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies from four states • 68,439 calls for service and daily operations • 20 programs facilitated by University Police to inform, teach and train our students on safety and policies
