Business Advocacy

Our Mission Dear Chamber Member, Your Chamber and its Business Advocacy Division exists to further the needs and interests of our members throughout the area. We welcome input from you as to how we can continue to effectively support your growth and business success. In 2011, the Upper Arlington City Council created the Lane Avenue Community Entertainment District to spur business development in the important Lane Avenue corridor, and to create a family entertainment destination for residents of the city. News restaurants opened, a major mixed use development encompassing a hotel, luxury apartments and retail, restaurant and office space, commenced construction. It was assumed that the creation of the Entertainment District ensured that additional liquor licenses could be authorized throughout the District, as well as safeguarding those businesses which already had licenses. However, it was discovered that a number of the sites within the District were zoned “dry”, including the new mixed use site. Rather than attempt to remedy each of these sites piecemeal through individual local referenda, City Council approved an ordinance to put an issue on the ballot last November to rezone the entire Entertainment District to permit the sales of liquor. This was Issue 24. A ruling of the Ohio Attorney General’s office stated that should Issue 24 fail, not only would new licenses in the affected area be prohibited. but existing businesses might lose theirs, as well. This caused considerable concern on the part of new and existing businesses which feared the loss of their livelihood. Nine restaurants and retail establishments, which were directly impacted by the issue, are members of the Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce. Working together with our members in the Entertainment District, the Chamber, through its Business Advocacy Division, participated in an active campaign on behalf of Issue 24. In partnership with the city and the business community, the Chamber was successful in achieving an overwhelming vote in favor of Issue 24, thus preserving the interests of Chamber members in the dynamic Lane Avenue corridor, and enhancing the quality of life in Upper Arlington. It is the commitment of the Chamber to support the growth and economic well-being of the Upper Arlington business community, and in particular, to advocate for the needs of our Chamber membership. The Chamber advocates for job growth and economic investment in the Uppper Arlington community. Sincerely,

Eddi Blough Board Chair Upper Arlington Chamber of Commerce
