REMODELERS COUNCIL February Remodelers Council Meeting

Building Industry Association of Central South Carolina

Our annual Memorial Day BBQ Sale did not take place as scheduled this year. We are waiting to see if we can reschedule that for another date this year. The sale is a fundraiser for the council’s use on community service projects, scholarships and other council needs.

Keep an eye on the calendar at BIAofCentralSC. com and your inbox for further updates.

Before the country shut down due to COVID-19, the Remodelers Council met at Seawell’s for a membership meeting. We had over 20 members in attendance and enjoyed networking, drinks, dinner and a guest speaker. We were pleased to have Todd Beiers, City of Columbia Commercial Plans Examiner. Mr. Beiers was invited to our meeting as part of an effort to keep lines of communications open between local inspection departments and our members. He gave us a lot of insight into the inspection process in the city and how to keep projects moving along smoothly.

Virtual Remodelers After Hours with Phase One Consulting In May of 2020, we started to open up some businesses, but we weren’t quite ready to meet in person yet. But, we were ready to have a meeting of some sort, so we partnered our members at Phase One Consulting to put on our first virtual Remodelers After Hours. Using a popular video conferencing software called Zoom, we all met via computer and smartphone. Chairwoman Kristen Meetze welcomed the group and gave some council updates (see below). CJ Disharoon of Phase One led us in a vodka martini making session to get things rolling. James “Bugsy” Graves joined in to present CJ with his newly-earned Certified Master Builder (CMB) designation from the HBA of SC (see photo).

After that, Pam Crane and the team lead us on a tour of their space on Rosewood Drive and told us about their business. It was a different way to have a meeting, but enjoyable nonetheless.

Council Updates The Columbia Remodelers Awards have been postponed due to COVID-19. Entries will be due September 14 with judging on or around the 23rd. We are currently reconfiguring the program to allow for electronic entries and contactless judging of projects if the homeowner prefers. We’ll get the entry packets out to everyone as soon as all of that is sorted. Don’t forget to take before and after photos and videos of your projects, and

talk to your homeowners about the awards to get them on-board early. Our June Remodelers After Hours is scheduled to be hosted by Century Glass. This meeting will be held on the Zoom video conference service. Register at our website.

HIGH PERFORMANCE BUILDING COUNCIL

AssociateNews

February Remodelers Council Meeting The membership of the High Performance Building Council (HPBC) met on February 13 at Seawell’s for a general membership meeting. Chairman Trevor Michael installed the leadership committee of the council during the meeting. Following dinner, Trevor taught the group about moisture detection instruments used in home inspections. Being able to see the moisture content in building materials and coupling that with thermal imaging tools gives inspectors and home raters a look be-

hind the walls as to what is going on. It is a useful tool in finding the cause of many problems in buildings. Keep an eye on BIAofCentralSC.com for upcoming HPBC meetings and events.

HOME & GARDEN SHOW 2020 Home & Garden Show

Presented by

The 54th Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show was held March 13 – 15, 2020 at the SC State Fairgrounds. The show featured over 200 exhibitors and vendors. The show was held amid uncertainty concerning the novel coronavirus pandemic. Although all precautions were taken to ensure the sanitization of the venue, attendance was markedly down from previous years. Despite all that was going on, the show looked fantastic and reports from exhibitors and attendees are positive. We’d like to thank the many members, exhibitors and volunteers and sponsors who helped to make the show happen, and we are looking forward to the 55th Carolina Classic Home & Garden Show March 12 – 14, 2021.
