This demography of Columbia aims to document every person and property living, working, or located within seven downtown Columbia, South Carolina, blocks for the years 1875-1930. In doing so, this report expands the resolution of the Federal Census to the city block and annual level by using City Directory and Sanborn Fire Insurance maps as data sources. Volume 2 contains all the Federal Census and Columbia City Directory information used in subsequent volumes.
The Columbia Archaeology Program (CAP) is a research and education organization that provides a focal-point for engaging scholarly, professional, and community perspectives on the social dynamics and historical legacies of Columbia’s diverse residents. CAP’s mission is to promote alternative histories of underrepresented pasts in ways that challenge our existing ideas of the present.
