Building a career around music means understanding how artist businesses work. Each artist has their own business honed to suit their music, their fanbase and their brand. Three artist entrepreneurs from the Featured Artists Coalition will let you inside their respective artist businesses, discussing the decisions and partnerships they’ve made along the way. Chris Cooke from CMU:DIY will also provide a speedy Artist:Entrepreneur Guide to an artist’s key revenue streams and primary business partners.

Speakers Chris Cooke - CMU Chris is MD and Business Editor of CMU, a service provider to the music industry. Best known for its media – the CMU Daily, CMU Digest, CMU Trends and Setlist podcast – the CMU business also provides training and consultancy to music companies, runs the CMU:DIY education programme for new talent, and presents the CMU Insights conference at The Great Escape each May. CMU is part of Chris’s company 3CM UnLimited, through which he also publishes cultural recommendations service ThisWeek London and its sister magazine ThreeWeeks Edinburgh; and helps to run the award winning PR training charity the Taylor Bennett Foundation.

Since being awarded StudyVox FM Musician of the Year by Kylie Minogue, Emma has remained one of the few independent UK artists to proudly represent the pop genre, and has been award-nominated alongside Adele, Katy Perry & Shawn Mendes for her efforts. The holder of a first class degree in Music Composition, Emma has taken part in Masterclasses at Abbey Road & Maida Vale Studios through the BBC and has achieved airplay on BBC Radio 1 with her single ‘Cherry On Top’. Emma is passionate about interacting with her audience and involving them in all aspects of her music. She gave a TEDx Talk on how and why she does this through her YouNow livestreams, which have amassed over 10 million views worldwide and earned her nominations for an iHeartRadio Music Award (Social Star category, 2017) and Shorty Award (Livestreamer of the Year, 2018). Also a regular YouTuber, Emma was selected as a YouTube NextUp Alumni (London) in 2017. She is an influencer and ambassador for the upcoming livestream and crypto app Rize.

Managing director of his own label DiY Gang Entertainment, he now makes a full time living from his music. Winner of The AIM 2017 Hardest Working Artist award, he has sold over 25,000 albums independently, toured the UK, Europe, Asia and South America, performed at Reading and Leeds Festivals, annihilated his Fire In The Booth and opened for the likes of Tech N9ne, Wiley, Skepta, Stormzy and more. Swaying from vulnerable to uncompromising within one verse and chorus, Bryde’s music is honest and furiously authentic. Fascinated with human psychology and inner workings of relationships Bryde’s songs still hold close a defiant and life-affirming quality. Described as being about “entangling and unravelling” they move from tender and delicate, to tough and unforgiving, drawing reviews that reflect this. Bryde established her ethereal indie-rock sound early on, working with producers such as Jolyon Thomas ( Royal Blood) and Bill Ryder-Jones (Hooton Tennis Club, Saint Saviour) Early radio support has reflected this coming from the likes of Huw Stephens on Radio 1, 6music, playlist on BBC Radio Wales and supported by Maz on Radio X. 2016 was a whirlwind year on the live circuit for Bryde: opening for Rufus Wainwright, well-received sets at Dot To Dot, Green Man and Swn, two sold-out London headliners, debut shows in New York and Los Angeles and UK headline tours. 2017 reached new heights with packed shows at Live at Leeds and The Great Escape, sold out shows and her first shows in Europe. Workshop 6:

PLATFORMS, PROMOTION AND PR Hosted by: Sam Bonham (BBC Introducing in the West) Line-up: Tasha Demi (Sony RCA), Aarti Popat (Imran Malik Publicity), Pat Connor (BBC Radio 1 / BBC West)

Today, creating and managing an image is just as important as making the music. In this workshop, you’ll learn how to create a strong personal brand and network your way to success. You’ll also find out how to use blogs, radio, and other media to publicise your brand and your music.

Speakers Sam Bonham - BBC Introducing in the West Sam Bonham is mostly a radio and podcast producer, working for the BBC, VICE and i-D. He also does a load of technology stuff, social media stuff and teaching. He has presented BBC Introducing in the West since 2010, supporting artists such as George Ezra, Gabby Aplin and Idles! He once cycled alone from London to Norway listening to Julio Bashmore on repeat.

Tasha Demi – Marketing Manager, Sony RCA After completing a degree in Media and Cultural Studies at the University of the Arts, Tasha began her journey in music, where she’s been working now for around 8 years in a variety of roles and companies. Tasha originally started out as a journalist and presenter where I worked for the likes of MTV, The Independent, MOBO Awards and Music News. Fast forward a few years and she began working at Box Television / Channel 4 where she was responsible for writing TV shows for their network of music channels, and organising shoots with talent. After her time there, she joined the International Talent & Music team at MTV to work on the annual Europe Music Awards show. This is a freelance role she’s completed for the past 4 years – and still takes part in today. Tasha has also worked for Universals’ UMOD label and Polydor, and on her own side project ‘#POWERS’, in which she worked alongside legendary producer, Davinche, exec-producing and curating a brand new album which featured 32 artists from across the UK. Tasha has now moved over from Polydor to Sony RCA as a Marketing Manager to help launch the Since 93 imprint, working across artists such as Loski, Amun, and Aitch. She also works across the RCA roster on acts including Future, H.E.R., Travis Scott, iLL BLU & more.

Speakers Aarti Popat – Imran Malik Publicity Aarti is a rising star within the field of publicity. Currently studying Classics at King’s College London, her passion for music, specifically UK Rap led her to journalism and the publication of various articles for Link Up TV both online and print. Outside of music, Ancient History is another one of her interests and has lead to some of Aarti’s academic work being printed in research journals at the British Library. Alongside her love for writing, artist development is something she thrives and excels within. Her role as a publicist at Imran Malik Publicity has allowed her involvement in various creative music campaigns across a broad roster of artists including the likes of J Hus, Ramz, Loski, Migos and many more. Wale is known for being a fierce negotiator, great networker, commercially aware and possessing real world insight to deal making.
