f you are considering racing, you probably love competition. Racing is a positive outlet for a desire to compete. I can tell you from personal experience, having done a lot of really fun things in my life…nothing is more fun than this! So if you are going to ‘go 4 it’, here is a list of things you need to get started: Get a Bike - Get a bike you like and can afford. Small bikes cost less to run and are typically easier to ride. Big bikes are faster in a straight line and cool on high-speed tracks. Keep in mind, it is usually better to buy a competitive used racebike, than to buy a new one and have to develop it yourself. Decide what class you want to race, and pick a bike that is competitive in that class and that pays money if you win. As much fun as racing is, going to your mailbox and finding a check made payable to you is fun too. Bike Preparation - At a minimum mirrors, turn signals, kickstand, and license plate must be removed. Headlight, horn, and brake light disconnected and antifreeze replaced with water. Your bike will need to be safety wired and have number plates added. Maximum preparation would include aftermarket body work, custom paint, exhaust system, super tune, lighter wheels, better suspension, better brake pads, lightening the bike, lower gearing, lighter chain, sticky tires, and more horsepower. Protective Gear - You must have a full face approved helmet, full leathers, boots, gloves, and a back protector. On a budget? Look for good deals and sales. Make sure everything fits and works for you. Transportation - You will also need a trailer or a truck, or a truck and trailer, or a good buddy with a truck to get your bike to the track. Training - You must take a class, either MRA group class or approved private schools, to get your license. Group classes are less expensive, private schools more expensive but offer more personalized instruction. The number one part on the motorcycle that makes it go fast is the rider. I have seen it often that new riders spend all the money on the bike and don’t have money for the rider to be trained at the same level. Don’t skimp on training.

Required Memberships - Just look on the MRA website and you can get all the information you need to become a MRA and AMA member as well as license forms. Read through the MRA rulebook for other valuable information and requirements. Raceday Procedures - Register online at least one week before the race. Have your AMA card and MRA license available when you come to the track. Sign the track waiver at the gate, find a pit space, unload your bike, and check in at registration. Check the little things like tire pressure, tire wear, oil level, gas, brake pads, and your safety gear. Your lower fairing has to be removed and you and your bike must go through tech. Mandatory rider’s meeting is next. Know when your practices begin, where you are on the grid, and when your races start. Plan on double the time it takes for anything related to the bike. Race as many classes as you can afford. The more races you can run the better.

C

olorado is a beautiful state that offers serene views and mesmerizing landscapes to entice visitors. However, what many may not realize is that Colorado also offers some of the most exhilarating trails for off-road motorcycles, ATVs, and dirt bikes. Adventure-seekers can have fun riding their preferred recreational vehicle and enjoy the scenic beauty Colorado has to offer. Always look at the signage to judge the type of off-road vehicle allowed on the trail or contact the local land management agency for details as not every vehicle is allowed on each trail. Let’s take a look at some of the hottest spots to enjoy an off-roading experience: Central City / Saint Mary’s Trail Network This area includes a variety of trails, from those for beginners to trails aimed at expert riders. Two popular trails for moderate riders are Yankee Hill and Kingston Peak. Directions: From Idaho Springs, merge onto I-70 westbound. Continue approximately two miles to exit 238. Summit County Vicinity If you’re looking for miles of expansive trails, look no further than the Summit County Vicinity. This exciting riding area features Red Cone, Webster Pass, and Radical Hill. From winding mountain passes to exhilarating switchbacks, there is something for all skill levels. Directions: From Dillon, go east on US-6 approximately seven miles to Gondola Rd. / Keystone Rd, turn right then immediately left onto Gondola Rd, at stop sign turn right onto Montezuma Rd, proceed six miles to trail.

Alpine Loop Known as one of the best trail systems in Colorado, the Alpine Loop provides riders with 65 miles of picturesque trails through territory rich with mining history. Two of the most popular trails are Engineer Pass and Cinnamon Pass, which most riders rate as moderate. The Alpine loop is an ideal area for riders who have several days to spend off-roading in Colorado. Directions: From Durango, travel north on Hwy 550 to Silverton, then right onto State Hwy 110 toward Eureka. From Montrose, travel south on Hwy 550 through Ouray to Silverton, turn left onto State Hwy 110 toward Eureka. Seven Mile What starts as a fairly basic trail turns into a challenging jaunt through streams and around rocks. Even beginners will enjoy riding the first half of this trail, but may wish to turn back when the trail gets more difficult. This trail is usually closed through the spring but is worth the wait to give it a try this summer. Most areas of this trail would be rated moderate, though there are some challenging areas. Directions: From US-287 and Hwy 14 go west approximately 30 miles, go north on County Rd 69 to trail head.

More information on these trails and many others is available at Stay The Trail Colorado (staythetrail. org).

Navigating a Roundabout Roundabouts, otherwise known as traffic circles, are a traffic control system slowly being implemented throughout the U.S. In most cities in Europe, roundabouts are common because of their ability to control traffic in an orderly and safe manner. The potential to bring about a more effective traffic flow make this a popular new traffic configuration in shopping centers and residential areas. Learning to safely navigate through a roundabout is important to their effectiveness. Using a Roundabout • When approaching a roundabout, the driver(s) nearing the roundabout must yield to all traffic already in the roundabout. Only when their lane of the roundabout is clear can a driver proceed to turn right into the roundabout. This means you can not enter the roundabout and expect the drivers to stop for you; you must wait for a clear opportunity to enter the roundabout. • Drivers must follow all signs, signals and speed limits posted in the lane. • Drivers entering the roundabout must also watch for their exit and be ready to turn right when they reach their exit. Remember to signal that you are leaving the roundabout lane.

First Ever… Jeep Wrangler as a NASCAR Pace Car

T

his custom built Jeep Wrangler Unlimited has been pressed into service as the first known Jeep Wrangler NASCAR Pace Car. This impressive build will spend the summer racing season working at Colorado National Speedway.

The build also includes Poison Spider off-road bumpers front and back. The front bumper has a front stinger and a Warn Xeon winch to allow it to conquer almost

The Pace Jeep (as it is now known) was built at Pollard Motors in Boulder, Colorado. Pollard has been selling and servicing Jeeps for over 40 years and has the experience and expertise to build this vehicle. Together with Trail Jeeps, they have been building high performance Jeeps for the last two years. This build consists of a Hemi conversion replacing the V6 engine with a 6.4L racing Hemi V8 engine that develops approx. 500 HP. A Dodge Ram transmission was installed to handle the extra power developed by the engine. Then a 3 ½ inch AEV lift was added with Fox off-road racing shocks. The AEV lift was chosen because this lift most closely duplicates the ride and performance of the unmodified suspension, but allows for greater ground clearance. 35” tires mounted on AEV wheels were added to give this impressive vehicle its muscular stance… and amazing off-road ability.

any obstacle encountered off-road. Finally, the headlights were replaced with high tech LED headlamps made by JW Speaker to throw out an amazing amount of light. The colorful wrap on this Jeep was designed and installed by Husky Signs in Boulder. 92.5 The Wolf radio station also sponsors this impressive Jeep. Researching Your Auto Dealer

T

advertising dollars thus they provide more objective evaluations. The Better Business Bureau (BBB) will be a valuable resource (www.bbb. org; www.denver.bbb.org). Use the BBB search box to verify if the dealership has had any complaints filed and if any outstanding or unaddressed complaints still exist. Whether buying new or pre-owned, the dealership should be a member of a Colorado Automobile Dealers Association. New vehicle dealers can be found at coloradodealers. org, while pre-owned dealers can be found at either coloradodealers. org (franchise) or at ciada. org (independent). Check the organization’s website to ensure that a dealer is in good standing.

After compiling your list of desired vehicles, create a list of dealerships offering those vehicles. Start the research with non-sponsored sources. These sources do not accept

Next, check third-party, nonsponsored websites like dealerrater. com, cardealercheck.com, and mydealerreport.com. These sites offer user reviews specifically focused on auto dealers. Consider that online reviews can be, and often are, faked. Even regulated sites like these are not immune. If the reviews are too-good-to-be-true

This multi-part series will take you step-by-step through the process of purchasing your next car; from researching the right vehicle for you to taking care of your investment. This month we will discuss the best ways to research a new or used vehicle purchase. he Internet has become a vehicle shopper’s most powerful tool; providing not only vehicle information but valuable insight about auto dealers. With so many automotive related websites, knowing where to go will eliminate hours, or even days, from the vehicle buying-process.

or look similar to one another, they are probably faked. Most vehicle shopping sites like cars. com and autotrader.com also have dealership research functions. However, dealers must either pay a fee or advertise vehicles on the website in order to be sponsored, so all dealers may not appear and the results are less objective due to the pay-to-play nature. When ready to purchase, contact dealerships and pay particular attention to the salesperson’s customer service skills. Good dealers don’t just sell cars; they help buyers make informed decisions. If you fill out a contact form on the dealership website, make a note of how quickly the sales person from each dealership responds, how polite he or she is, and impressions of the entire encounter. If conducted properly, dealership research will provide a better overall buying experience.
