BEFORE HEADING OFF TO COLLEGE, HIDDEN HILLS RESIDENT AND CORNELL UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF ARCHITECTURE, ART, AND PLANNING FRESHMAN, CHRIS KASSABIAN, DECIDED TO LEAVE BEHIND A CORONAVIRUS INSPIRED SCULPTURE FOR THE FAMILY BACKYARD.

fter months of quarantining with his family in Hidden Hills, 18-yearold Chris Kassabian felt inspired to create a unique outdoor sculpture highlighting the unusual era we are living through. “I’ve always wanted to design a sculpture,” Kassabian recalls, “and I thought this would be the perfect time to incorporate what is happening all around the

Although his senior year was greatly altered by COVID-19, Chris was still able to be exposed through his online classes to artist Tara Donovan, who uses everyday objects to create sculptural forms. This gave him the initial idea to create a social distancing sculpture out of everyday objects he himself is familiar with. Once school was out, he was able to begin work on his creation. Using nineteen 2-inch-

wide PVC pipes from his local Home Depot, Kassabian cut each individual pipe from 10 feet down to 6 feet. This helped to visually display the scale of social distancing in an abstract, artistic method. He then assembled the nineteen pipes together by drilling them to create a massive, connected form in his backyard. “The use of 19 components presents a relationship between the typography of Covid-19 and the molecular structure of the virus on a microscopic scale,” Kassabian explains. While the overall sculpture itself was constructed to resemble

the literal physical structure of the Coronavirus molecule, the use of 6 foot pipes helped to connect viewers to COVID’s impact on social landscapes. Once his sculpture was finally ready for viewing, Kassabian invited a few friends, family members, and even teachers from his school to come view the completed sculpture one by one in his backyard.

City of Hidden Hills passes a resolution opposing state legislation that could allow for the subdivision of individual residential lots within the community.

As the state of California continues to deal with the Covid-19 Pandemic, several new pieces of Housing legislation have been introduced in Sacramento that would have a dramatic effect to the City of Hidden Hills. The most egregious of these bills is SB1120. The Bill, if passed in its current form

would allow a homeowner to split their lot into two lots, which would effectively allow for a second home to be built. When combined with recently passed Accessory Dwelling Unit legislation, one Hidden Hills lot could effectively contain six separate housing units.

The Hidden Hills City Council has taken aggressive steps in opposition of this type of legislation. On Monday, July 27, the City Council passed a Resolution opposing a variety of these Bills. Later in the week, the City sent letters of opposition to our local Senator and Assembly member, and has joined forces with other jurisdictions

to oppose legislation that could permanently change the character of our neighborhood. Finally, the City Council has retained the services of a Sacramento lobbyist to assist the City in opposing this legislation and to protect Hidden Hills interests.

While the City Council understands the California housing crisis, they remain steadfast in opposition of legislation that takes a one size fits all approach. Several of these proposed bills do not take into account the size of our city, our proximity to open space, the potential for wildfire, and challenges related to emergency evacuations.

However, as with most everything else that has been cancelled, COVID-19 has proven too unpredictable a force to plan around and hence we are left with the hope that we can pick this back up in the spring. . . and if not, next fall 2021.

REASONS WHY YOUR DOG MIGHT BE SCRATCHIN’

Is your dog itchy? Does he or she wake you up in the middle of the night with the telltale jingle of her collar and incessant scratching? You’re not alone. Itchy dogs are one of the most common cases seen by general practice veterinarians. While there can be multiple causes of itching in your dog, one of the most common causes is allergy.

THE MOST COMMON ALLERGY IN DOGS comes from a little tiny friend that we all dread, the flea. While to the typical dog or even person, a flea bite is an itchy irritation; but to a flea allergic dog a bite can mean an allergic reaction of uncontrolled itchiness. All it takes is one flea bite for an allergic dog to become intensely itchy. Owners swear that they haven’t seen any fleas on their dog, and that may be true! A flea can be pretty sneaky. It can bite and jump off without the owner ever seeing the flea. Fleas are prevalent even in well manicured yards. They can even be tracked in on humans and brought into our homes to our indoor pets. This is why it is so important for our furry friends to be on year round flea and tick prevention in Southern California. Although more prevalent during the warm summer months, because of our climate’s lack of any real winter, fleas are active in the environment year round. Fleas have even begun to develop resistance to some of the over the counter topical flea medications. There are multiple safe,

prescription, oral preventatives on the market now that are great at protecting your furry friends. Your veterinarian can help choose the right product for you.

A SECOND COMMON CAUSE OF ALLERGY in dogs is food allergy. If your dog seems to be constantly itchy year round, it may be a good idea to take a look at his diet. Common culprits are the protein source in their food, such as chicken, lamb, beef, or another meat source. An easy way to test if your dog is food allergic, is to switch to a new protein source that they have never had before. For example, if your dog normally eats a chicken or beef based food, but has never tried lamb before, then switching to a lamb based diet as a trial can be a helpful test. There are a couple things to remember however - first, whenever switching your pet’s diet, make sure to do it gradually over a week or so. Start by adding in a small amount of the new food, and gradually increase the percentage of new food each day until you’re feeding the new food exclusively. This gradual change helps to prevent tummy aches. Second, the new food trial needs to last for at least 6 weeks to fully evaluate whether the new diet is making a difference. Third, and most importantly, is that during the trial your dog needs to be eating the new food EXCLUSIVELY. This means that the only protein source he or she can have during this trial is the new protein source.

No other protein source can cross his lips, or else the trial becomes void. This can be tricky because there are lots of hidden ingredients in some of the treats that we give dogs such as protein meal or by-products (take a look at the ingredients next time you pick up a bag of dog treats). If your dog feels better and less itchy after the 6 weeks, then congratulations! We have determined that your dog has a food allergy, and found a food that she does better on. However, if your dog is still itchy on the new food trial, that does not eliminate a food allergy. It just means that your dog may also be allergic to the new food that we tried, but also could not have a food allergy at all.

Even if your dog is strictly indoor, these microscopic allergens can penetrate into the home. There is allergen testing available for your dog, and this is something that a specialized veterinary dermatologist can help with. We can help treat the itch with frequent bathing, and also medications. There are new options available that target the cellular components causing the itch, making these drugs very effective at alleviating your dog’s symptoms.

FANS – did you know that the No. 1 cause of barn fires in the summer is inexpensive box fans that are designed for indoor use? Because the motors in these fans are not sealed, dust and dirt can get inside, making them overheat and ultimately cause a fire. If you have fans in your barn, ensure that they are designed for outdoor use and that the motors are sealed.

WATER – place water troughs in the shade. When they are in the sun, they may heat up causing horses to refuse to drink, which can .potentially cause colic. Adding electrolytes to daily supplements can also encourage horses to drink and stay well hydrated in the heat.

SHELTER – make sure that horses have a shady place to stand, especially during the middle of the day.

FLIES - are rampant in the summer. There are several things you can do to help. Notably, keep your barn clean, and pick up manure several times per day and place it in covered containers. Use fly repellents and sheets as needed, and also consider supplements that are designed to make your horses undesirable to flies.

A TRUE COMMUNITY BANK OPENS IN CALABASAS

FIRST OFF, IT SHOULD BE MADE CLEAR THAT THIS IS NOT A PAID ENDORSEMENT. As editor of this publication, as well as the quarterly, Hidden Hills, I only at most occasionally encourage new businesses to check-out our magazine as one way to get the word out to the community that they have something unique and excellent that is worth discovering. In this case, I was already a long-time client of Logix Federal Credit Union, so when I saw that they were opening a new local branch right next to Trader Joe’s in Calabasas, I reached out to them. . . Not because I wanted them to advertise, but rather that I wanted to personally get the word out to everyone as to what an outstanding organization they have.

For a couple decades, I have also been a client at one of the country’s largest national banks (which I won’t name here) and they have been sufficient at best. It was five years ago however that I discovered Logix, which I had never heard of, when I was referred by a friend. This was for a Home Equity line of credit, for which the rates and terms were much better than “the national” and the process of getting it established much easier. The interaction was personal, with a positively grass-roots, small-town feel, even though

their branch, then in Chatsworth, felt clean and a bit futuristic. The experience was so good, with consistent personal service at every turn that soon, we moved our auto loans over as well.

Two years ago, when we were shopping a jumbo loan for our new home, I assumed Logix, being a small credit union, would not offer such a product. I was wrong. After being asked to jump through an extensive number of “hoops” by the “national” bank (despite our longtime personal and business history with them), along with the notion that we would have to pay “a point” for the privilege, I called up my representative at Logix. “No problem,” he said. “Just send over your recent returns and we’ll get it done!” And he did. . .quickly and with ease – and NO POINTS.

In short, Logix has given us service beyond that which the national bank’s “private banking” division ever did. This has been the same for my friend that recommended them. Now that they are just outside the Hidden Hills gates in Calabasas, I consider it a service to the community to help get the word out. Logix is definitely something worth looking into, and if you do, I am confident you will thank me for it.
