PROCUREMENT

The Five Steps to Strategic Purchasing By Brian Hough

F

or the collision industry, purchasing decisions can be a multifaceted challenge. In addition to the immense amount of research required to outfit facilities with the necessary equipment, tools and gear to keep staff working safely and efficiently, comes the immense challenges of overseeing high-flow inventories. This is further complicated by the fact that shops often deal with parts from many different suppliers. For those looking for easy ways to improve their business model, purchasing and supply chain management are often rife with inefficiencies. The most important thing for shop owners

to remember before rushing to enact improvements is to be aware of the difference between tactical and strategic sourcing. Where tactical sourcing is reactive, with a procurement procedure built around responding to short term needs, strategic sourcing orients itself around making decisions that improve fiscal and logistical positions going forward. It may not take a genius to figure out which one works best for bodyshops, but it can be difficult to escape the vortex of short-term thinking. Here are five ways to ensure your procurement policies are strategic for the long term:

1. Don’t Fear the Data All businesses thrive when data is diligently collected, but few individuals will, as an instinct, be diligent about doing data entry. Product cost effectiveness, supply-chain inefficiencies and post-purchase support reliability and are key ingredients to making any major purchase for any business. Tracking all this raw data may seem useless—or overwhelming—but today’s management suites are capable of turning them into on-the-fly analytics reports. The analysis is only as good as the data available. Where it is missing, decision-makers must make choices on assumptions rather than educated guesses.

2. Invest in Supplier Relations While the importance of maintaining good customer and insurer relations is often talked about, the importance of building up rapport with a broad network of suppliers is often left out of conversations. There is no quick route to achieving this kind of relationship. It requires consistent effort over the long term. Learn about and weigh your suppliers to make sure their strategies align with your own. Understand as much as you can about

your supplier’s operational processes so that you can fully articulate their systems with yours. Also, let them understand your business. Working with suppliers to develop collaborative, solution-based partnerships rooted in the specifics of each firm’s position will help you avoid short-termism. Do you pursue drawn-out negotiations? It might work once, but the supplier, having sunken more time than expected

for diminished returns, may not be as eager to bring new opportunities first. Finding a way to work with suppliers to cut costs and serve the strategies of both parties will always yield better outcomes in the long run. When relationships become toxic, move on. Most will work with you to amicably resolve issues—at times as simple as integrating invoicing systems—saving both parties important time, money and labour.

3. Track Your Indirect Costs Indirect costs are best described as the costs you probably aren’t thinking of when considering the collision industry—namely paper, copier maintenance, custodial services and telecom to name a few. These are easy to overlook when you’re thinking about global markets or making strategic decisions about an auction, but the reality is that given how often money is spent on these items, they add up. Moreover, the fact that they are often overlooked means that inefficiencies can accrue in a way that they don’t with direct costs that are reviewed with far greater frequency and depth. They can often end up being the figurative couch cushion that you haven’t turned over in a while, only to find a stash of forgotten change underneath.

BUYER’S GUIDE 2019 9

PROCUREMENT

4. Market Research A purchasing expert is well situated to scout out new technologies and anticipate market shifts by maintaining close relationships with suppliers. While staying ahead of the curve by identifying and sourcing new and innovative solutions can be a fulltime job in and of itself, wise procurers remember that suppliers aren’t just sources of business but sources of information. While in a business that often punishes shops for making poor predictions about where the market is changing, the firms that have the strongest purchasing procedures are the ones with the purchasing teams that know how to best use their networks as the canary in the coalmine for potential trials and opportunities ahead.

5. Follow Through on Monitoring Purchases Award your business and start moving on to the next decision, eager to keep the momentum going. In fact, that isn’t even a terribly short-sighted approach. The faster you can make good decisions, the more good decisions you can make. But, while it is always necessary to keep moving forward, it is also important to keep track of what you have learned from every decision. Monitoring and keeping a close eye on how suppliers’ products fare in the actual marketplace and how willing they are to address technical issues after transactions will

10  BUYER’S GUIDE  COLLISIONREPAIRMAG.COM

give you a leg up in future selections. This is harder than it sounds. For many purchasing managers, their work rarely takes them to the shop-level beyond confirming arrivals, installations and troubleshooting management. Sure, some procurement managers do an exceptional job, but, according to statistics recorded by Collision Repair magazine’s Buyer’s Guide, more than three quarters of shop procurers do not conduct reviews of equipment performance unless they are requested by shop staff. The ‘unless there is a

problem, there is no need to look for one’ attitude is a classic example of stick one’s head in the sand and should be avoided at all cost—anyone who buys equipment should know how it is being used. As anyon e w h o h a s m an age d supplier relations will know, much of the equipment used on the shop floor will be advertised for uses that may be completely ignored in reality. In such cases, either the team is unaware of these features, or the team has a more efficient way of doing them.

NO-FIL A995 BLAZE

U-SEAL 500

Norton Saint-Gobain

NPT Adhesives and Sealants

According to Norton Saint-Gobain, the NoFil A995 Blaze paper disc line provides execllent tear resistance due to the polyester reinforced D-wight hook and loop backing. The abrasive is a special ceramic aluminum oxide abrasive featuring extremely sharp grain edges. As the grains fracture, these edges generate a consistent cut throughout the life of the product. ABRASIVES & ADHESIVES

INFRARED DE-BONDER

REPLAST

TECNA

Wurth Canada

The use of structural adhesives for fitting parts has led to long and hard removal interventions that bring with them the risk of possible damage to other contiguous parts. However, TECHA’s new Infrared Heater 3546 makes the whole process easy, fast and cheap. TECNA has introduced an innovative de-bonding process by the means of infrared heating. It does not affect the parts in contact with the damaged part and it drastically reduces the time required to restore the vehicle. TECHNA has chosen to use infrared radiation to ensure a safe process for the user’s health; no electromagnetic fields are generated, as with induction heaters. Unlike induction heating, the use of infrared radiation allows operating on any type of material including, steel, aluminum, carbon fibre and plastic. In addition, it enables programming a heating curve for the polymerization of the glue in five steps, which can be framed into parameters such as: duration, temperature and heating power. The 3546 is equipped with a USB interface for transferring files or upgrades. For the debonding aspect the process can be reversed to reduce the time needed for the polymerization “cure” of the new adhesive repair.

arslanauto.com/

The Wurth REPLAST structural adhesives range consists of a full line of urethrane structural adhesives designed to bond and repair all plastics, fibreglass, SMC, metal and glass. Most of the products in the REPLAST line are delivered via a dual-mix cartridge system. Wurth says the product is OEM approved and can be used in most automotive and heavy truck applications. The REPLAST line is part of Wurth Canada’s REPLAST Easy Plastic Repair System. The system also includes primers, cleaners, contour film and reinforcement tape.

ECLIPSE ELECTRONIC MEASURING SYSTEM Wedge Clamp

EZE TIE DOWN SYSTEM/CHAINLESS ANCHORING SYSTEM/FULL-FRAME ANCHORING SYSTEM Wedge Clamp

The Eclipse Electronic Measuring System from Wedge Clamp Systems combines a polar laser scanner (shown here) with portable live targets and intelligent stems positioned by the body technician at strategically marked frame or body points. According to the company, each sweep of the laser precisely locates each of the targets, which then transmit the measurements to the computer and the integrated database of manufacturer specifications. As the pulling process begins, live target’s verification lights change to indicate the severity of damage at each point on the vehicle. The lights change to red, yellow or green depending on closeness to the manufacturers’ specifications. When all the lights are green, this indicates the frame has been restored to its proper measurements.

Wedge Clamp Systems offers three options in its anchoring line. The EZE Tie Down System (shown here) is for light pulls and panel pulls. The company says it is ideal for quick pulls on radiator supports, sheet metal alignments and door posts. The company’s Chainless Anchoring System is for use in repairs on most medium-size vehicles. The unit features four lightweight anchor stands that lock the frame firmly in place for pulling or straightening. Finally, the company’s Full-frame Anchoring System is for use with trucks and SUVs. It features the company’s patented universal 2-axis swivel clamp that Wedge Clamp says adapts to virtually all vehicle frame configurations. It can be used in combination with the company’s EZELift system.

PAINT & REFINISH Beyond Curb Appeal

C

stomers want their vehicles not only to run the way they did before a u collision, but to look brand new as well. A great paint job is not just about curb appeal, however; though that’s certainly part of it. Modern finishes are a synthesis of protective and aesthetic elements, the subtle product of the artist’s eye and the chemist’s science. Getting it right is everything and that requires more than a good colour sense and a skillful touch with a spray gun. Dusty surroundings or the failure to control temperatures during the curing process can turn a mirror finish into a murky and mismatched mess. Many tried and true approaches remain effective, but each year brings innovations, some subtle and some bold, and 2019 is no exception. Turn the page to find products that can help your team be more accurate at colour matching, swifter at painting, and safer on the shop floor.

Red hot repairing

W

e ’ve come a long way since the legendary auto house Bugatti unveiled its 1935 Aerolite—a swooping coupe with a magnesium body, which made welding too risky to attempt. For its concept car, Bugatti could take the step of creating a crested ridge that ran from windshield to tail—a mounting place for the rivets that held the body together—and in doing so made a bold style statement. That’s a luxury we don’t have when dealing with today’s cars. Welding is more important than ever, and the challenges presented by today’s advanced metals—high strength steel, advanced high strength steel, aluminum and various alloys that enable manufacturers to build lighter, stronger and safer cars—have grown tremendously. Welders must address those challenges, and supplier partners have come to their assistance. Read on to find out more.

fter a successful 2017, Arslan Automotive’s 2018 is proving to be an even more successful, and 2019 looks set to continue this upward trend. This is, in no small measure, due to the quality and reliability of our welding and 3-D Measuring equipment brands that have become well recognized in Canada. FIMER Inverter MIG/ MAG Pulse welders and TECNA Smart/Smart Plus Inverter Spot welders and Accuvision-3D measuring systems have captured a respectable slice of the Canadian market. Thank you to all our valued partners in making these names a success. Our next goal is to market FIMER and Accuvision-3D in the US. Accuvision-3D, a 3D body measuring system developed by Arslan Automotive Canada and assembled in Montreal, has become a Canadian success. Since its introduction to market in late July 2017, it has received tremendous positive reaction from bodyshops in Canada. Its ease of use, simplicity, accuracy and moderate price has attracted many users even among some shop owners that had already purchased competitive systems.

“Canada is our home and our first priority market, and it has also been our training ground, now we are ready to take on the larger sales quantities and ramp-up production for US sales.” – Arman Gurarslan Two new additional features added at no cost: Accuvision-3D has added at no extra charge a wheel alignment diagnostics feature to its software. All past users can download the additional feature from the Accuvision-3D.com website at no additional charge. Another new feature is a IR camera and pointer system using IR LED lights. This will allow users to have complete freedom to use the system camera under and/or against direct sunlight without affecting the camera’s reception of the LED light signals from the hand held pointer. This means, one can measure the vehicle outside of the shop since Accuvision-3D needs no calibrations nor a flat level surface for the vehicle to be measured

As to Shop Certifications,Honda Profirst , Certified Collision Care (GM, Ford, Chrysler/Fiat, Nissan, Kia) and CCIAP certification program of AIA all recognize Accuvision-3D for their respective certification programs. All users we have spoken with appreciate the time savings and ease of use of Accuvision-3D. Although we have a help desk and have spent considerable time in training our staff, calls to resolve issues through it are rare. Since bringing Accuvision-3D to market last July,Arslan Automotive

has delivered in excess of 150 systems in Canada. Mr. Arman Gurarslan, president of Arslan Automotive Canada stated, “Our next step is to develop our US sales. To this end, we have hired and trained a full time technician for the US market, we intend to hire and train another technician to organize demonstrations, help distributors and agents and in general, sensitize our American friends to the advantages of Accuvision3 D o v e r c o mp e t i t i v e systems. Although, we have sold a few Accuvision-3D systems in the US, we have to organize our own network of agents and distributors to really penetrate the US market. That is the challenge we will tackle during the next 12 months. Canada is our home and our first priority market, and it has also been our training ground, now we are ready to take on the larger sales quantities and ramp-up production for US sales.’’ We’ll be at Booth 16021 at SEMA 2018 in Las Vegas. We look forward to meet you.

Aligning Strengths

T

he AutoHous e stor y parallels the progression, and sometimes rough ride, of the adoption of information technology to the collision repair industry. When AutoHouse’s founder, Mike Gilliland, sketched a drawing of a business model on the back of a paper napkin at YVR for a potential client, the industry was much simpler but a seismic shift was already underway. That potential client was Eric Danberg from the Boyd Group, one of North America’s first collision repair consolidators. Depicted on the napkin was the concept of data consolidation; the collision repair industry was becoming more sophisticated and Gilliland saw that there was a need for businesses to collect and use information to promote better management. At the time, one of the challenges was that insurers typically had more information about repairer’s performance, than the repairers had about themselves. Repairers needed to level the playing field if they ever wanted to have more balanced conversations with their insurance partners. AutoHouse intended to build a financially viable software platform where collision repairers had the same reporting capabilities as major insurers. A short time later, the Generis software platform was released, it enabled repairers to effortlessly view information from across multiple locations and management systems. Repairers

Autohouse founder Mike Gilliland.

“In the end, we have a talented and committed team and we love this industry.” - Mike Gilliland now could instantly access key performance indicators (KPIs), sales, and profitability of an individual shop, or a group of locations, and further segment by customer such as insurance company. Though financially viable for a repairer, the return on investment for AutoHouse to build the software was questionable. Undeterred by what could easily be called limited success, AutoHouse continued to invest and push its vision. It refocused its efforts from solely analyzing historical data to a more proactive platform with predictive power. As they saw it, competitive pressures were mounting and repairers needed to improve operational performance in order to meet their own profitability

80  BUYER’S GUIDE  COLLISIONREPAIRMAG.COM

goals and adhere to the targets set by insurance partners.AutoHouse added a set of operational dashboards that monitored administrative, financial, and production processes within a location. The core concept was to frame the information in a way that allowed repairers to address problems or performance short-comings before they were written into history. The recent release of the Generis Pulse dashboard is targeted at influencing the

behavior of staff to align their actions with the organizations goals. By reframing data into highly visual digital dashboards teams are aligned and can see their progress against set goals. The tag line used by AutoHouse in this generis component is “99 percent alignment, one percent execution”. AutoHouse’s clients now represent single store locations, some of North America’s largest MSOs and several OEMs. When asked what has made AutoHouse successful, Gilliland says “A relentless commitment to deliver value to the collision repairer. We’ve put mechanisms in place to align our team to that goal, such as month to month renewals, we need to stay focused to retain our customers.” Perhaps it sounds like it hasn’t been an easy journey, but asked if he has any regrets, Gilliland says, “Anything worth doing isn’t easy. In the end ,we have a talented and committed team and we love this industry. Where we are now is worth more than any challenges we’ve had to overcome. My only regret is that I don’t have the napkin from YVR. Eric keeps telling me he has it but won’t show it to me!”

ince the inception of Collision 360 five years ago, founder Anthony Iaboni has tailored his company’s offerings to address the evolving value gaps within the collision industry. Collision 360 was founded with the concept of a one-stop refinish supply resource and has made inroads to accomplishing that concept. What’s evolved from that concept is a concentrated effort to support clientele through their manufacturers. “We operate in a competitive marketplace within an industr y inundated with consolidation. We refuse to be another vendor peddling aging inventory and have focused our efforts on providing training, solutions, and outstanding service to the collision industry. It’s the manufacturer’s job to make a great product, it’s our job to make a difference,” says Anthony Iaboni. With this statement in mind, Collision 360 has identified various like-minded manufacturers and has invested heavily in training capabilities both on and off-site to not only better represent a given manufacturer but ultimately better serve the industry. To further support its success with Spanesi Equipment, Collision 360 has outfitted its onsite training facility with a spray booth, frame equipment, 3D vehicle measuring capabilities, fixturing ability, and rivet bonding solutions, along with a welding station comprising of fully functioning MIG, resistance welders, and fume extraction. Collision 360 sees it as an advantageous solution for collision facilities to not only receive hands-on training but also to ensure client partners are making informed purchase decisions. Slow and steady has been the growth progression of Flat Line SSI.

I

n 2002,Phil Panet founded Flat Line in order to fill a gap in the automotive aftermarket— the Greater Toronto Area needed emergency service for spray booths. “The area lacked a service company with the specialized knowledge in spray booth equipment,” says Panet. “I thought I would take a chance.” People always ask where did the Flat Line name come from? Well, the thought process behind the name was that when a customer thought their spray booth had ‘flatlined on the operating table,’ you could call us and we would revive it. The growth started there—what what was originally one man in one truck quickly became two. Soon, staff were added to provide preventative maintenance programs. That proceeded for the next couple years until 2005, when it was decided to look at new spray booth equipment sales as well. “We were completing our service for customers and they kept asking me why I didn’t sell new equipment. All I heard was ‘if you are going to service it, why are you not selling it?’” says Panet. At this time a decision was made to hire Matt Gibson to source and be responsible for selling new equipment to the Flat Line customer base. “For me it was a g re at opportunity joining Flat Line,” says Matt Gibson. “ I was given the opportunity to essentially start a new division, create a business plan. Experience Counts

E

xperience counts because it is not just a can of paint. In an increasingly complex business environment for bodyshop operators, having a refinish supplier who can do more than deliver a can of paint has become a critical business decision, on par with the choice of choosing a refinish brand. This is a belief Gard-X Automotive fully believes in and backs up by not only offering its clients a choice of refinish brands but a complete suite of services and support to give its clients a competitive edge in an increasingly difficult market. With a current staff of 16 refinish service professionals and a combined 150 years of experience in the refinish industry, the Guard-X team has an average of 23 years of industry experience. Led by Eric Chan, president, the team consists of four technical and business development representatives, two of whom were former automotive refinish technicians, each having over 18 years of refinish experience. On the business development side is Kevin Green and Scott Dolby who each has more than 25 years in the collision industry. Their resumes include positions ranging from counter service to journeyman shop technician to equipment specialist to trainer to manufacturer representative. Gard-X can claim to have staff that has had firsthand experience in virtually every level of the collision repair industry.

Gard-X Automotive makes it its mission to help our collision refinish clients be the most productive and efficient that they can be. Experienced gained is time wasted if it does not support building a foundation of skill and knowledge that can be applied. This is reflected in the culture of Gard-X Automotive where continuous participation of its staff in training and professional development is mandatory. The goal is always continuous improvement and finding solutions to problems both complex and simple. In fact, Gard-X Automotive makes it its mission to help our collision refinish clients be the most productive and efficient that they can be. Gard-X Automotive Refinish is an authorized distributor of automotive and fleet line manufacturers PPG refinish, AkzoNobel refinishes and Automotive Arts refinish brands.

90  BUYER’S GUIDE  COLLISIONREPAIRMAG.COM

The product and service is not a one size fits all and Gard-X Automotive is proud to offer its clients a choice of paint brands and systems to meet their needs and requirements. The approach of Gard-X is to always support the client’s preference for a brand, unless of course we see a serious mismatch in compatibility and suitability. The goal is always to recommend what will bring the client the most success. Where there is no preexisting bias, Gard-X will present offers

from its manufacturer partners and let the client decide which is best for them. Wh i che ve r p ai nt br and the client chooses, Gard-X absolutely believes and strives to train and teach their clients h ow to u s e t h e “Sy s te m”. Gard-X Automotive has never believed in“generics” and is consistent in that belief with paint lines. It is always best to use any paint line as a system from the ground up - primers to colour to clearcoat. From its years of experience, it is the observation of Gard-X that the most successful refinish repair operation almost always adheres to a single line system usage. To achieve long term consistent superior results, the best guarantee is proper training and usage of the recommended products within the paint line. Gard-X believes that the system approach extends to the shop process and operations of the collision repair facility. With extensive experience in setting up and organizing lean production facilities, Gard-X offers extensive consulting support to assist collision repair shops in becoming modern and efficient operators.

A lot has changed over the last 35 years in the replacement parts industry, but Sal’s vision has remained the same. With demands increasing and more and more manufacturers e n t e r i n g t h e i n d u s t r y, aftermarket parts have become a staple in the collision repair industry and it is companies like Monidex that are driving that change. “The quality of the aftermarket part has come a long way since I first started,” said Polletta.“The replacement parts we have today are as high quality and as good as the original part.” Monidex maintains the superior standard of their parts through strict inspection programs. Many company parts are passed through both CAPA and NFS testing to be recognized as certified replacement parts. High Tech Trends

T

here’s no question that today’s vehicles are high tech. That means you need high-tech tools to perform highquality, safe repairs. That also means shops need to invest, but the investment often pays for itself in terms of higher productivity, better repairs and happier customers. Éric Léveillé is the Vice President, Paint and Body Equipment for UAP, owners of the CMAX and NAPA brands. He outlines some of the trends currently impacting the industry, and the equipment that can help shop owners meet those challenges.

Scanners

“There’s been a lot of discussion around pre- and post-scanning, and we have two manufacturers that can help repairers get up to speed on this issue,” he says. “We carry scanners from both Launch Tech and Autel. They both offer an Android-based tablet.” Both of the offerings from UAP simply plug into the car’s OBD II port and provide a list of the codes that are showing. A pre-repair scan will help the shop to determine what was caused by the collision and what was a pre-existing condition.

Car Benches

Scanning may be a hot topic right now, but collision repair will always be about bringing the car back to OEM specs. But now the tolerances are much

NAPA CMAX carries the AccuVision-3D from Arslan Automotive, as well as other major measuring brands.

“Scanning may be a hot topic right now, but collision repair will always be about bringing the car back to OEM specs.” - Éric Léveillé tighter and the tools to do it much more advanced. “We have a number of different products when it comes to 3-D measuring that are in line with OEM specs, such as the AccuVision-3D from Arslan Automotive, the Car Bench 3D offered by Filco and the Laser Lock 3D from Chief,” says Léveillé. “The new measuring systems are very precise and easy to use. You measure the points around the area you need to straighten, and the machine will tell you when the car is exactly back to specifications.” Léveillé notes that not only is this process more accurate than the previous methods, it is much more cost-effective. “Pulling a car manually requires a lot of skill on the part of the technician, and it would often take up

94  BUYER’S GUIDE  COLLISIONREPAIRMAG.COM

to 90 minutes or more,” he says. “Using true 3-D measuring, the same job can often be performed in 10 minutes. It’s an investment, true, but it saves time and money in the end.”

Welders

“We’re seeing so many different types of alloys, such as aluminum and high-strength steels, that a good resistance spot welder is now a necessity,” says Léveillé. “The OEMs do not usually name a specific brand, but they are very clear about the requirements. We carry top-of-the-line welders such

as Fimer, Tecna, GYS, Chief, AMH and more. The resistance spot welders these days are so advanced that they can detect when you are, for example, welding aluminum to ultra-high strength steel, and can adjust their own settings accordingly.”

Colour Matching

Finally, Léveillé points to the advances in colour matching. Simply knowing the colour code is not enough for a precise match, as the same tone, used in two different factories, can vary significantly. “Axalta has been providing us with advanced tools for colour matching that go far beyond the traditional colour deck,” he says. “Their spectrophotometer will scan the car and give you an exact colour match. This is another investment that pays off with increased productivity and lower cycle time for your paint department. The ultimate goal would be to have an application on your phone where you can just take a photo of the car and it sends it to the spectrophotometer to determine the match. We’re not there yet, but I think it’s coming.” For more information on the products offered by NAPA and CMAX, please visit them online at napacanada.com.

Rondex’s story began in 1972 when Ted Greenwood founded the company alongside sons Ron and Dexter. Over the decades, a lot has changed about the business, but our core mission has remained the same. We value every single one of our customers and treat them like a part of the family. As a family - owned company, we always force ourselves to raise the bar as far as value is offered across the organization. We no longer compare ourselves to the industry standard, instead we continually strive to be the industry standard. We go to extraordinary lengths to satisfy, delight and wow our customers – we aim to exceed their expectations, and make them advocates for our business. We are constantly improving our value to customers by providing highquality products, extraordinary service and competitive prices. Headquartered in Winnipeg, the company has expanded enormously since Ted first opened the doors. The company now has locations in Winnipeg, Nanaimo, Victoria, Calgary, Edmonton, Hamilton and Toronto. Last year, we added two new locations in Alberta. Our business is growing, and yet customer service is still our top priorty.

Bret Greenwood, co-owner of Rondex, part of the TED Group.

They chose, from the beginning, to partner with the very best. We as a company are constantly looking for ways of improving our consumer value. “We were the first to do many things, such as computerizing our systems, offering in-house repair on air tools and compressors, and holding trade shows and product information sessions,” he says. “They were really pioneers. They took the bodyshop supply business out of the back lane and on to the front street. They took pride in the work they did, and what they could help their customers achieve.” This year we’re introducing the TED Scan system, an advanced inventory management system

that is specifically designed for autobody shops. TEDScan, TEDLinx and TEDVend are parts of a complete perpetual inventory control system for the PBE industry. They can work separately, or together, to provide the collision centre complete usage tracking, automatic re-ordering, on-demand inventory reporting and complete usage.

At Rondex, we assist our shops with the training and equipment they need to get certified and support reviewing and meeting necessary requirements. We team with our partners and offer our customers all necessary training. For example, The Advanced Estimating class delivers knowledge, skills and information for the professional technicians who are dealing with amazing advancements in vehicle technology. Having the right information must be accompanied by the knowledge to construct an accurate estimate and repair a file that accelerates the repair process and exceeds the customer’s expectations. It’s been 46 years since Ted Greenwood and his sons started serving bodyshop customers. The industry has changed and the companies in the TED Group have changed along with it. a r k h a m , O nt a r i o based company Uniram first made its mark in the collision repair market with the invention of the UR007, an innovative reclaiming blaster. Founded in 1980 by Japanese engineer Sam Yamamoto, the company originally manufactured dust collectors and pressure blasters. It was the combination of these two products that led to the design of the UR007, a unique feature that later became the industry standard. The product later went on to be sold in 11 countries, including Canada. The next breakthrough for Uni-ram came in 1988 when the company developed and patented the automatic cleaning system for paint spray guns. This pneumatically operated cleaner, known as the “Cascade” series, received instant acceptance by the car repair industry around the world. Sales increased when California passed a law prohibiting manual cleaning of the paint spray guns. This law eventually spread to the rest of United States, Canada and several countries in Europe. Four years later Uni-ram developed the highly innovative solvent distillation machines, the “Encore” series, with full explosion-proof certification under UL and CSA.  This product

t seems likely that the car manufacturers have the biggest total presence when we look at all of the companies and organizations making up the global automotive claims economy. Even a relatively small car company is a massive under t a k ing , and big c ar manufacturers are some of the largest companies in the world.

For a long time, it didn’t seem like these giants were really paying much attention to the collision repair industry, even down to the dealership level. Collision repairers were left to improve their own operations, and the wheel turned. Today, we’re seeing the growth of dealer-only collision networks and the OEMs themselves have either rolled out their own certification

and recognition programs or will likely do so in the near future. It was the luxury brands that started the trend towards certifying repair centres. The reasoning was clear: high-tech cars needed hightech repairs. While those brands are constantly pushing ahead, many of the mass-market manufacturers now offer features that also demand this high-tech approach.

If you had told him about his career path fifteen years ago, however, he would have struggled to believe you. “Assured started out as just a summer job for me. I didn’t intend to stay there any longer or come back. In fact, I was planning on doing a completely different college program.” There was something special about his work at Assured that Adrian couldn’t quite shake. He quickly realized that it was there where he wanted to be, and has pursued autobody ever since. After studying at Centennial College and continuing his lucrative career at Assured Automotive, Gaspell realized he had made the right choice. “I love what I do and I love the trades,” he says. Even after so many years in the industry, Adrian is eager to improve his skills and pass on what he knows to others.Learning, and in turn teaching others, is an ongoing responsibility the best technicians must possess in order to keep up with the pace at which modern cars are changing. “Knowledge is the most important part of my job. You need to take every opportunity you have to learn in order to avoid becoming stagnant.”

Adrian Gaspell, third from right, and the Assured South Barrie Collision Centre team. According to Adrian, the best part of working at Assured is the team environment.

Working at a business like Assured, a company that is dedicated to teaching its staff everything they need to know to do their jobs well, including equipping them with the best and latest tools, certainly helps Adrian keep ahead of the curve. “To stay up-to-date we take I-CAR courses, and Assured is pretty flexible with allowing me to take different courses.” Apprentices at the facility receive top-notch training as well. “When we get apprentices, they’re placed with a good trainer who we think they will work best with. That way they can move through the training process effectively.” Adrian is also a part-time teacher at Centennial College and is on the Ontario College of Trades board as chair of the autobody and collision damage repairers

trades, in an effort to both improve the trades and help others learn about the trades. “I want to be able to pass knowledge onto others and encourage up-and-comers to get in the trades so we can all work together to make it better. Teaching also allows me to learn. If a student asks me a question I don’t know, I’ll find the answer.” The shop he works at is one of the largest in Ontario, and so its sense of community is hard to ignore. “Our team works together to help each other out. There is a

sense of comradery—we all get along.” Assured encourages the staff to engage in after-work activities together, something the staff embraces. “In the summer we play baseball together every week, and we’ve gone to Blue Jays games together.” To describe his career in one sentence, Adrian said, “I would say it’s a hands on, technical job that requires problem solving, applying yourself and a willingness to learn.” He continues, “Everyday there are new challenges.”

Surrounding themselves with a dependable and committed team has been their strategy, which has helped them get to where they are now. “Opening a collision repair facility made sense for us at this point, and it’s been an incredibly natural fit as CARSTAR holds a trusted reputation, known for providing premier services with dedicated team members,” says Vince Pollesel. “Working with the fantastic team at CARSTAR has gotten us even more excited about this new venture and we look forward to continue

• Exclusive collision

repair network for new car dealers

i v e y e a r s a g o, Consolidated Dealers Co-Op launched a collision network with two innovative goals: to develop collision repair solutions and support s er v ic es exclusively for car dealers looking to improve customer retention rates and to develop strong insurance partnerships. Consolidated Collision Services (CCS) offers car dealerships the support needed to handle all aspects of collision centre operations. With access to shop-level reports, detailed market analysis tools and the in-house expertise to understand how to respond to them, CCS ensures car dealerships can have confidence in the high-quality services they provide at their collision repair centres. “The CCS network is versatile and ever-evolving,” says Kyle Strong, manager of CCS network shop Star Motors Collision in Ottawa. “We are not told how to run our shop, but are given the ability to work with the rest of the network to maximize our performance.” CCS closed out 2017 with 60 collision centres representing over 150 new car dealers throughout Ontario, Manitoba and

Alberta. With a combined annual collision revenue of more than $150 million, the network includes some of the largest and most successful dealer collision centre operations in Canada. Further details about CCS can be found at ccsdealers.com. CCS’s general manager Mike Beier is a firm believer in the company mantra – bringing the collision centre to the showroom – because he knows just how well dealerships have responded when they see how much collision work they are able to retain from their customers. “The key to success is having your collision centre be topof-mind before your customers are involved in a collision,” he says. The CCS program was the brainchild of Sandy Liguori, president of CCS and Woodchester Collision in Mississauga. Liguori has the unique vantage point of being

both a new car dealer and someone who began his career in the collision repair industry. “For years the challenge for dealer collision centres has been how to improve customer retention and profitability in an increasingly competitive marketplace, all while delivering an OEM Dealership level of customer experience,” says Liguori. Realizing that his experiences on both sides of the industry meant he had a special understanding of what dealers needed from their shops, Liguori created the CCS program – by dealers, for dealers. CCS has three components for their program: measuring and expanding customer retention for the collision centre,

maximizing performance and profitability opportunities and representing its network members at a national level with insurance carriers. CCS provides all its members with the software, tools and expertise to track collision centre performance and prioritize goals, as well areas for improvement. These components help create a successful collision repair centre built on the desire of every new car dealer to be the one-stopshop for all of their customer’s automotive needs. On April 11-12 in Niagara Falls, CCS held its spring 2018 Network Group Meeting. The two-day event was held in conjunction with the Automotive Conference and Exposition (ACE) and the Consolidated Dealers and Trillium Auto Dealers Associations (TADA) annual convention. Additional Conference information can be found at automotiveconferenceandexpo.ca. For more information, please visit ccsdealers.com and/or consolidateddealers.com.

very sector of the automotive claims economy depends on a thriving repair sector, but the rubber really meets the road when it comes to manufacturers and suppliers of equipment and products. Every single one of them has a vested interest in helping you to succeed. These companies, large and small, touch every aspect of the repair. One or more of them is usually involved from the first estimate to the final detail. Some concentrate solely on

providing the best equipment and products they can. Others go beyond this with training and other programs. It’s only natural that a manufacturer would offer training on how to use its equipment effectively, but it’s not uncommon to see manufacturers and suppliers offering programs that have little to do with their core products. These programs are instead focused on helping you achieve the best you can. LAST WORD

To Buy or Not to Be Stay ahead or step aside

By Gideon Scanlon

henever I look through the latest features in management suites aimed at the collision repair industry, my jaw drops. With every incremental upgrade, they offer astonishing new functions. With a click of the button, they can compile information into reports which once would have taken weeks of dedicated labour from a professional. Where once we were impressed by the amount of information that computers are able to access, today, it is a software’s ability to sift through data and turn it into something useful which draws our collective gasps.

With ideas for the products sourced from dozens of industry insiders and information about what leading manufacturers distributors have to offer, this book gives bodyshop equipment procurers the chance to negotiate with their best foot forward. Even if day-to-day operations are going along smoothly at your business, and the thought of making significant investments in new kinds of equipment seems unnecessary, this book holds value. By keeping an eye on what competing equipment brands are offering, you can challenge your assumptions about what you should expect from your suppliers and

“If spilt milk is paying more for than you should for products that do less than they could, you should be crying!” These tools have added fire to a number of trends in the industry. Less than a decade ago, the 10,000 Canadian repair shops were primarily independent. Today, with fewer than half as many operations in the country, MSOs haven’t just thrived, they look poised to be in the majority by 2021. In an age where management tools serve as a centralized hub able to oversee an unlimited number of employees with immediate access to KPI reports and inventory information, is it no wonder that this trend is becoming the norm? Those who stuck with the business techniques they are familiar with— good old fashioned filing cabinets, mimiographs and elbow grease—they are no longer around. Those who have embraced the promise of digital management suites and made the best use of them are reaping the rewards. The 2019 Buyer’s Guide has taken inspiration from these cutting-edge software suites. Yes, with enough time spend on product research, anyone could learn about a particular product or service. That is not the point. This book allows for an easy athand comparison of the products and distributors competing for your business. 134  BUYER’S GUIDE  COLLISIONREPAIRMAG.COM

root out those inefficiencies and areas of lowexpectation that comfort has allowed to flounder in your business—I promise, they are definitely there. Proverbial old wives are often quoted as saying “There’s no sense crying over spilt milk,” but this attitude has no place in the automotive world of today. If spilt milk is paying more for than you should for products that do less than they could, you should be crying! Putting this publication together has been an immense challenge. We have spent entire days on seemingly tiny details, but ones that we knew we would have to get correct if the issue was to be of any value to the industry. So take some time with it, and keep it close at hand throughout the year. Even if you don’t end up buying a single item from the list, when a team member tells you all about a musthave product, you’ll already know all about it.
