Assess pupils’ speed, accuracy, expression and understanding (their reading fluency) with 60 ready-to-use assessment sheets mapped against age-related expectations

ASSESS FLUENCY IN READING

Assess Fluency in Reading

NEW March 2020

● Identify gaps in your pupils’ reading attainment so they

can be addressed ● Measure and record pupil progress in fluency ● Match pupils to a reading book at the right level

How does the assessment work?

• A child reads from a levelled text • Record the number of Words read Per Minute (WPM) • Errors recorded and subtracted from the total number of words read to give the Words Correct Per Minute (WCPM) • WCPM divided by the WPM and multiplied by 100, to give an accuracy percentage

Giving visibility and representation to all our readers From authors and illustrators, to characters, topics, artwork and photography, Collins Big Cat is committed to reflecting a diverse readership. We try to ensure that our books are representative of all readers across genres, age groups and subjects, so children can relate to and empathise with the characters and recognise themselves in our books. We aim to give visibility and representation to all our readers by including characters from a range of backgrounds, and by telling stories about different people and their unique adventures. By reading fiction and non-fiction that represents us all, children will develop a greater understanding of the world and of themselves. 16 ort.qxd 11/02/2015 17:32 Page

Being an astronaut was amazing – truly out of this world! I took small steps on the Moon and a giant leap off it! Tara took the spacesuit off and placed it carefully back inside the box. Perhaps I’ll be an astronaut when I grow up, she thought, her eyes twinkling. I’ll reach for the stars and boldly go wherever my dreams take me. A galaxy far, far away or a lopsided lunar landing … Whatever it is, it’ll be a blast!

Chapter 9 The next moment, Tara was back in the attic. The whirling and swirling stopped and the mist cleared. Tara looked down at the dusty floorboards. It was good to have something solid beneath her feet again.

She removed the helmet and took a deep breath of the still dusty air. It tasted so different back down on Earth. She grinned to herself. 52 53 06601_P001_056.indd 52 2/13/19 8:19 PM 06601_P001_056.ind d

TARA BINNS

Explore STEM careers with Tara Binns!

When Tara Binns opens up her dressing up box something exciting happens… Inside the box are clothes, uniforms, shoes and hats…an outfit for every job you can think of. Which one will the box choose for her?

• Feature a strong female protagonist who is transported into another world based upon the uniforms in her dressing-up box • Each book is filled with fast paced adventures and explores a different STEM career through the eyes of Tara and her two friends • Present a positive female role model, broaden horizons and promote a view of gender parity in the working world Chapter 6 “Look!” shouted Tara, pointing at the robot. “The claw of that robot has brake fluid on it. I bet that robot is splitting the brake pipe!” Ayesha nodded. “Looks that way. We’ll get an engineer to the production line to fix the robot as fast as possible.” Ayesha went to talk to the foreman about the robot. Tara heard one of the engineers tell another to tow away the faulty car. “Take it to the crash test area. The other three cars with faulty brakes are there already. We’ll keep them safe until their brakes can be fixed. There aren’t any more crash tests today, so they won’t be a danger to anyone.”

Tara was horrified. Ortez! He’d gone to fetch one of those faulty cars. He was about to drive a car with no brakes! 34

ARABIC READERS

LEVEL CHART Level

Level Description

1

Level 1 books introduce children to the letters of the Arabic alphabet using bright and engaging illustrations.

2

Level 2 books introduce simple words for children to read based on key syllables with long vowels.

3

Level 3 books introduce the concept of the ‘story’, and include simple phonic sounds and very high-frequency words with simple spellings.

4

Level 4 books are for children who are ready to start to read stories with simple single words or non-verbal sentences with 2 or 3 short words, and with total support through illustrations and extensive use of repetition. Double spacing is used between words to ensure children see where each new word in a sentence begins and ends, with the focus on reading core words.

5

Level 5 books are for children who are ready to read stories with more challenging word patterns or non-verbal sentences with 2 or 3 words, and with total support through illustrations and extensive use of repetition. Double spacing is used between words to ensure children see where each new word in a sentence begins and ends to ensure the focus remains on reading core words.

6

Level 6 books provide an advance on level 5. Sentences are still highly repetitive but slightly longer, with simple story development supported by illustrations. Double spacing is used between words to ensure children see where each new word in a sentence begins and ends. Although the focus at level 6 remains on reading the core words, the concept of reading hamzat al-wasl and sun letters correctly is introduced in non-verbal sentences of up to 4–5 words.

7

Level 7 books include story lines with more episodes in time sequence, and may include imaginary happenings in the context of familiar experiences. There is still repetition but more variation in pattern and more new words are introduced than in lower levels. Non-fiction titles bring in simple non-fiction tools, such as diagrams, labels and captions. Additional vowel marks that encourage the flow of pronunciation are introduced at this level. Verbal sentences of up to 8-10 words with repeating and accessible actions appear at this level. Double spacing is used between words to ensure children see where each new word in a sentence begins and ends.

8

Level 8 books are becoming more complex, although still strongly patterned but to a lesser extent than level 7. Although the focus remains on vowelling to aid the flow of reading with verbal sentences of up to 8-10 words, level 8 books have more events and episodes, fewer repeated patterns, and more complex vocabulary. Non-fiction titles use non-fiction tools – including signs, labels, captions and diagrams – where necessary. Double spacing is used between words to ensure children see where each new word in a sentence begins and ends.

9

Level 9 books are similar in complexity to level 8, with strong patterns and similar events and episodes. Non-fiction titles use non-fiction tools – including signs, labels, captions and diagrams – where necessary. Single-word spacing is used from level 9 upwards. In addition, very high-frequency words appear consistently without vowel markings. These features will help the students get used to the traditional norms of printed Arabic.

10

Level 10 books include characters that express emotions and stories with more events. Non-fiction titles introduce terms that might be new to many children. Level 10 books continue to use single spacing and more high-frequency words appear without vowel markings to help the students get used to the traditional norms of printed Arabic.

11 12 13

Level 11 books provide more literary language, more complex sentence structures and less support from illustrations. Characters are more varied, with action sustained over several pages. Non-fiction titles include glossaries where necessary. Sentences are still short for better understanding. However, grammatical vowel endings are more evident to encourage fluent reading and to provide familiarity with some higher-level features of written Arabic. Level 12 books feature greater use of literary language and more unusual and challenging vocabulary. Play scripts also feature from Level 12. Non-fiction titles contain longer, more formal sentences and a wide range of unfamiliar terms. Sentences become longer with greater use of conjunctions and relative clauses. Grammatical vowel endings are more evident to encourage fluent reading and to provide familiarity with some higher-level features of written Arabic. Level 13 books feature longer and more complex sentence structures. Sentences make use of a wide range of stylistic features which reflect progression in the teaching of Arabic grammar. Stories may also contain more literary, metaphorical language, including similes and other figurative language to help the reader create mental images, plus exaggeration for dramatic or humorous effect. Non-fiction titles contain longer, more formal sentences and a broader range of unfamiliar terms.

14

Level 14 books build on level 13 by offering stories with more complex plots and with a greater number of chapters to encourage the development of reading stamina. Non-fiction texts use complex vocabulary and deal with challenging global themes. The style of language further reflects progression in the teaching of Arabic grammar, while still using largely familiar vocabulary and simplified concepts.

15

Level 15 books provide more complex plots and longer chapters to help develop reading stamina and to help develop sustained engagement with texts. Level 15 books use a wide range of language structures to reflect progression in the teaching of Arabic grammar. Paragraphs and other text devices become more evident in these longer books.

16

Level 16 books offer more complex, underlying themes that give opportunities for children to understand causes and points of view. A wide range of language structures is used to reflect progression in the teaching of Arabic grammar, while still retaining the core aim of encouraging a love of reading through Arabic stories and texts.
