The Messenger A VALENTINE'S DAY THOUGHT Several years ago, a young man from Cambodia was sitting beside me at Discover Dallas at Dallas seminary. I had taken several of our college students to the one-day event to look over the seminary. I asked the young man if he was married. He pulled out his billfold and showed me a picture of his wife and their four-year old son. "You have a beautiful family," I told him. "How did you and your wife meet?" "At our wedding," he said. "What do you mean at your wedding?" I was puzzled. "You mean you did not know her before that day?" "Our parents are believers and in our culture the parents arrange the weddings. Being the oldest in our family, I wanted to set an example to my younger siblings by honoring the tradition of my parents so I agreed." He lovingly caressed the photograph then turned to me with a big smile and said, "I'm so glad she's beautiful." Westerners may have a hard time with the concept of "arranged" marriages but at the first ever wedding, the groom did not meet his bride until their wedding. "But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, He took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib He had taken out of the man, and He brought her to the man" (Genesis 2:20-22). Notice the man's response as God presented him his bride: "The man said, 'This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man" (Genesis 2:23). The first recorded words that man spoke was poetry. The In This Issue man received his wife not on the basis of who she was but on the From the Pastor basis of who God was who gave him his wife. Strategic Discipleship Sisters’ Retreat Update Husband, how do you receive your wife? Do you see her as God's gift to you? If you do, thank God for His wonderful gift and treasure your wife. Spend timer with her. Write her some poems even if they sound corny. Date her. Make her your priority. The Messenger Food Pantry One of the ministries that we have as an avenue to share the Gospel is helping families in need of food. We have a small food closet, but due to consistent need it is beginning to dwindle. Would you please consider buying a few extra cans of every day food items (like beans, corn, peas, sauces, etc.) to help our area families in need. . Bags of pastas also seem to go a long ways. We can also use a creative mind that can help maximize reaching people with the Gospel through this ministry. If you have some ideas, please come visit with Ryan at the church office.

We are still taking Benevolence in honor of Cindy Hickey. Cindy is recovering in Abilene from her illness in November. If you’d like to give towards this cause, mark your offering envelope “For Cindy.” Please continue to lift her and her family up in prayer.
