The Messenger College Hills Baptist Church Volume 2, Issue 39

A gift to the community. I am so excited about our church sponsoring again a free Fall Festival next Wednesday, October 31, as a gift to our community. This is one of the ways we want to let people know that we are here, and we want to get to know them, and hopefully have an opportunity to be able to share Christ with them. Let us pray that God would open up those opportunities for us during and after the Festival. Thank you so much for your financial support for this, for your prayers and for your participation. Thank you, Philip, for your leadership in putting this together. Everybody's commitment of time, financial contribution and perseverance in prayer are all for the great cause of the gospel of our Lord Jesus. Continued on page 2

The Persecuted Church The persecuted church. Our church-planter friends in southern Philippines will not baptize anyone who is not willing to die for his faith. This may seem an undue burden on new believers, but they live in a world where persecution and martyrdom are not at all remote. We have brothers and sisters in Christ in Iran, in Saudi Arabia, in Iraq, in Pakistan, in China, in Myanmar, and other places who have been beaten, driven out of their homes and community, and some who were killed for their faith. This should not surprise us since our Lord Jesus told us that “if they persecuted me, they will persecute you also” (John 15:20). While we can and do suffer some type of persecution in the United States, most of us cannot begin to imagine what believers in other countries go through. But we can stand with them and their suffering by praying for them. On Sunday, November 11, we will observe with other churches in the world A Day of Prayer for the Persecuted Church. Our worship service that morning will be a little

different as we simulate how believers in areas of persecution worship. We will also spend time in praying for our persecuted brothers and sisters. There will be prayer guides that you can take home and use for individual and family devotion. We also have prayer wristbands to remind you to pray. When I was in southern Philippines, I met two young ladies who were about to be deployed to a dangerous community. They spoke with quiet and joyful confidence about getting to share Isa al Masih (Jesus the Messiah) with this people group. I just received an update this week about them. They have been deployed and were introduced to the leaders of the community who were suspicious of their motives. One line that caught my attention in that email was, that their supervisor “saw fear and terror in their eyes.” When you stare at the face of the reality of suffering and martyrdom, it is very unnerving. But the “fear and terror” did not diminish their resolve to stay and share Isa. Courage is not the absence of fear, but the willingness to obey the Lord in spite of fear. We can pray that God continues to give them, and others like them, boldness to speak the Lord Jesus' name. Lakan
