WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT FOR OUR SON‌ The words of encouragement from God the Father to Jesus at his baptism and right before Jesus started his public ministry have always challenged me. As Jesus came up out of the water, the voice of the Father was heard: "You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased." (Luke 3:22) "You are my Son" speaks of Jesus' identity. ""Whom I love" shows the Father's affection for his Son. "With you I am well pleased" was the Father's affirmation of Jesus. Continued on page 2

Words of Encouragement for Our Son (Continued) If God the Father saw fit to encourage Jesus, the perfect God-man, at a watershed point of his life, how much more should we, earthly dads, and parents, encourage our children at those important times in their lives. And so, my wife Kim and I wrote such a letter of encouragement to our son Josh, and I read it to him at his and Lindsay's wedding rehearsal dinner, in front of family and friends. Then Kim and I, together with Lindsay's parents, grandfather, and Josh's grandfather, gathered around Josh and Lindsay, and Wallace Bruce, Josh's grandfather, led us in praying over Josh and Lindsay. The following is what we wrote for Josh: Josh, today you will pledge your love and your life to Lindsay Tugman and the two of you will be husband and wife. God has been very gracious to you to allow you to see and experience his faithfulness in some great adventures you got to experience as a single man, and in allowing hardships and trials even in the midst of those great adventures, so that you will always trust God and depend on him. Today, God is giving you the greatest gift that he can give you next to your salvation: a beautiful and godly wife in Lindsay who will walk with you through life's adventures and trials. God has purposed that the two of you together, as husband and wife, will be the reflection of his image. Josh, from infancy to where you are today, we have prayed for you, loved you, nurtured you, challenged you, encouraged you, and did our best to teach you and show you the beauty and majesty of our Lord Jesus Christ. And God has rewarded us by allowing us to see his work in your heart and in your life. You have been a blessing to us, your parents, and to your family.

Today, we release you to be the kind of man God has called you to be. We release you to be the kind of husband to Lindsay that will honor our God. You will always be our son, but you will never be our little boy again. Josh, always remember that the Lord your God is your foundation, your strength, your purpose, your delight. “Blessed is everyone who fears the LORD, who walks in his ways! You shall eat the fruit of the labor of your hands; you shall be blessed, and it shall be well with you. Your wife will be like a fruitful vine within your house; your children will be like olive shoots around your table. Behold, thus shall the man be blessed who fears the LORD. The LORD bless you from Zion! May you see the prosperity of Jerusalem all the days of your life! May you see your children's children!” (Psalm 128) Josh, always love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might. The LORD promised, “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name. When he calls to me, I will answer him; I will be with him in trouble; I will rescue him and honor him. With long life I will satisfy him and show him my salvation.” (Psalm 91:14-16) Your very satisfied, fulfilled and grateful parents, Mon & Dad July 7, 2012
