FAITH AND GRATITUDE Thank you sooooo much for your continued prayers and support for our family. God has been using you to shower us with His love. As hard as it is to lose Kim, your love, prayers and support have made it a much bearable journey. Thank you! This difficult journey has made us hang on to God and His Word more tightly, with you, our church family, hanging in there with us in faith. "Yet this is what the Sovereign LORD says: ... 'If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all.'" Isaiah 7:9 Sometimes problems come in treacherous wave after treacherous wave. Just when you think you are able to catch your breath another one splashes against you and you feel like drowning all over again. The psalmist captures our sense of helplessness: "Chaos calls to chaos, to the tune of whitewater rapids. Your breaking surf, your thundering breakers crash and crush me" (Psalm 42:7, MSG). You hang on for dear life, your screams of "Help!" and "Stop!" muffled by the roaring turbulence. Continued on page 2

FAITH AND GRATITUDE (continued) "When the house of David was told, 'Syria is in league with Ephraim,' the heart of Ahaz and the heart of his people shook as the trees of the forest shake before the wind" (Isaiah 7:2). When Kim and I were in business and our biggest client, Phillips Petroleum, told us they were dumping us, fear gripped my heart. I had been telling people that if not for Phillips we would not have a roof over our heads nor food on our table. Except God had already said in His Word that He will provide for us, that He will take care of us. God reassures King Ahaz about the futility of the threat of the invading nations, "It will not take place, it will not happen, for the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is only Rezin. Within sixty-five years Ephraim will be too shattered to be a people. The head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is only Remaliah’s son" (7:7-9). Then God tells him, "If you do not stand firm in your faith, you will not stand at all." Ahaz could either be bullied by the threat of the invading armies, or he could trust what God had told him. God was calling him to put his faith in Him, not in his circumstance. To trust His Word rather than what he could see and what he could hear. To put his confidence on Sovereign God rather than be ruled by the fear in his heart. It is the same call that King Jesus makes on His followers. That we could either be bullied by all the hardships and troubles of life, or we can trust what He has already told us. God is calling us to put our faith in Him, not on our circumstances. He wants us to completely trust His Word rather than what we can see and hear. Jesus wants us to dethrone fear in our hearts and recognize Him for who He is, our good and Sovereign King. Within sixty five years of Isaiah's prophecy the Assyrians who had deported most of Israel in 722 B.C. brought many more foreigners to Samaria and totally "shattered" Israel as a nation. God's Word was fulfilled. By the way, after Phillips dumped us, God showed me that we still had a roof over our heads and food on our table. Because it was Him all along providing for us. Faith. Trusting God's Word, the Bible, completely. It will unshackle you from fear. Where your hearts can soar in joy to the smiling face of King Jesus. "Without faith it is impossible to please God" (Hebrews 11:6).
