Better than prime rib and gravy! When David was in hiding from King Saul who was trying to kill him, he had a chance to kill Saul but did not. After sparing Saul's life, David complained to the king, “They have now driven me from my share in the LORD's inheritance.” You would think that David was talking about his privileged position as Saul's leading general, or the prestige and fame of his military accomplishments, or the comforts of the palace, or maybe even his family and friends like Jonathan. But that was not what he meant. “They have now driven me from my share in the LORD’s inheritance and have said, ‘Go, serve other gods.’ Now do not let my blood fall to the ground far from the presence of the LORD.” (1 Samuel 26:19, 20)

Better than prime rib and gravy! (continued from page 1) When David spoke of his inheritance, he was talking about the presence of the LORD. When I look back at the last month when I had been off work, there are two things that I treasured the most-- one was the time I got to spend with Kim, and the other was the leisurely time I got to spend with the LORD reading his Word, going for long walks with him in prayer, and getting to think through and process the things he was showing me in his Word. We all go through tough times in our lives. We live in a fallen world where problems, hardships, frustrations, sickness, and death are part of the mix. But we cannot be defined by our circumstances. Circumstances in life do not make us, they simply reveal who we are. And who we are is based on our relationship with God through his Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. Who we are is the very life of Christ in us. And there is nothing better or sweeter than that life.

When you read the Psalms, or about Daniel, or Jeremiah, or Paul, they understood something about God and life in God that too often escapes us today. No matter what they were going through, their delight and joy was found in God alone. The times I have spent in prayer this last month, I have prayed for our church and other evangelical churches in San Angelo that we will understand and experience this life. Then the message of the Good News that anyone can have this life through Christ will simply spill out of our own lives, onto the lives of our family and friends and neighbors. The kind of life that David knew and experienced. Listen to what his heart cried out for when his own son Absalom was trying to kill him: “God—you're my God! I can't get enough of you! I've worked up such hunger and thirst for God, traveling across dry and weary deserts... In your generous love I am really living at last! My lips brim praises like fountains... I eat my fill of prime rib and gravy; I smack my lips. It's time to shout praises!” (Psalm 63:1, 3, 5)
