Read through the following key features of the Award to discover why so many schools are using the Award.

Personalisation and choice Learners are encouraged to choose their study programme themselves, and set personalised targets. How hurdles are overcome is up to each individual. Learners also choose how they would like to evidence their Award.

Take on responsibility Learners choose from four levels of responsibility: taking part, helping to organise, organising and leading. They must collect evidence that shows the responsibility level they have chosen.

Peer assessment Peer assessment is at the heart of the Awards. Learners are responsible for ensuring the targets set are appropriate for the individual, and for double-checking the evidence collected. Peer assessment of the process is a mandatory feature of the Awards.

Creative evidencing Evidence can be collect in any manner of ways. There are no 'must-complete' worksheets and no exams to sit. It is possible to pass the Awards with a minimal amount of written work. We've seen CDs, DVDs, photographs, audio recordings, drawings, cartoons...the only limit is imagination.

Learners follow own interests Learners really appreciate the ability to tailor the Awards to their own interests and lives. The flexible framework of the Awards makes it possible for almost anything to be studied. Young people are encouraged to take the lead at the planning stage to ensure the Award fits their bill.

Measuring individual achievement As these Awards are personalised learning programmes, they measure the achievement of each individual who participates. The achievement is recognised with a personalised certificate, accredited by ASDAN.

Learning in any location Learning takes place in many settings, and this is recognised by the Awards. Many schools use the Awards as an excuse to open the doors and get outside, whether that be working on an environmental issue, accrediting participation on a residential or working with the community.

Enabling partnership work The Awards encourage schools to work in partnership with community agencies, from the fire brigade to the local college. Many schools work in collaboration with CLD partners, as expected by Curriculum for Excellence.

Measuring distance travelled It's the process of doing an Award that counts, rather than the outcome. The complexity of a task is determined by the starting point of the individual, with success relative to each learner. The Awards recognise this individuality and accredit a wide range of projects on that basis.
