European Dental Experts Unite as an Alliance with ACFF, ORCA and EADPH to Map Caries Epidemiology and Stop Caries Now for a Cavity-Free Future London, UK – The European Chapter of the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future today announced that they would be collaborating with the European Organisation for Caries Research (ORCA) and the European Association for Dental Public Health (EADPH), bringing together areas of required expertise, to highlight the need for updated and relevant epidemiological data on caries. The Alliance will soon also become an affiliate member of the Platform for Better Oral Health in Europe (PBOHE), working with them on caries epidemiology. The European Chapter of the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future, launched in July 2013, recently held its first Collaborative Council meeting in Frankfurt, to discuss and agree initial activities that will support the implementation of key changes to dental health practices across Europe. At the meeting, the Collaborative Council also discussed ways in which they can assist with the roll-out of the European Core Curriculum in Cariology. “The first long-term goal set by the Global Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future states that by 2015, 90% of dental schools and dental associations should have embraced and promoted the „new‟ approach of „caries as a continuum‟ to improve dental caries prevention and management,” The other long-term goals, identified by the Global Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future include: • By 2020, regional members of the Alliance for a Cavity-Free Future should have integrated, locally appropriate, comprehensive caries prevention and management systems and monitoring developed and in place. • Every child born in 2026 should stay cavity-free during their life time. The Collaborative Council will next meet in March 2014 in Brussels to discuss next steps for the European Chapter.

Welcome to the first EU country ACFF Chapter! More than 30 journalists joined the first EU country ACFF chapter launch press conference in Athens an event which highlighted the significant aspect of prevention for the proper oral health to the Greek population. The chapter is now opened and the governmental officials, policy makers and journalists should start seeing this as a great opportunity to improve oral health and spread this alarming message to the society as a whole. This is the first ACFF country to be launched and now will others follow either as Alliance teams or as Alliance representations. Building on Prof. Svantes‟ comment, this is an excellent start for ACCF Europe to further exchange knowledge and best practices amongst all EU countries with the further goal to „walk together‟ and „work together‟ with the global Alliance goals.

Right before the press conference we have arranged a focused meeting between Svante Twetman and Konstantinos Oulis who • aligned on goals • exchanged the status quo in the Greek government/ education and field practice (in terms of opportunities for prevention mindset establishment)

• discussed about education and trainings in schools and • stressed the importance that the dental practitioners within the field play for the society A video of all the event has been taken which will be hosted in national online medical portals, will be sent out to TV channels to capture this issue and of course will be uploaded on our pan EU youtube platform. Further materials, the Greek ACFF declaration and the press materials will be uploaded within the EU web platform which will be launched in late Q1 and available to all countries.
