Typhoid Crisis of 1916 In November 1915 Macleod had a minor typhoid epidemic of 20 or so cases. This outbreak led to several deaths in Lethbridge months later. In February 1916, the weather warmed, water levels rose and the ice at Macleod broke up, carrying the typhoid-causing raw sewage down river. At Lethbridge, the water was pumped from the river and into the two standpipes used for water storage and then entered the domestic water supply. Within 10 day, typhoid broke out. In a short time, there were 100 cases with 16 people dying from typhoid. Soon the epidemic was even affecting the troops of the 113th Battalion, Lethbridge Highlanders, housed at the Exhibition Grounds. The first person to die was Charles Payne, a 26-year old Lethbridge Laundry worker. Lethbridgians were told to boil their water for domestic use. R.B. Owen, provincial health specialist, visited the

city and tested the water supply. Owen’s tests from the river turned out to be negative so suspicion turned to the city’s milk supply and soon people were scalding their milk as well as boiling the water. But Owen’s tests were incorrect. Just prior to the tests, the river had turned cold, which had slowed the water and settled the effluence onto the bottom of the river. So it took a while for the reason for the epidemic to be determined. The typhoid epidemic forced the community to relook at how water was treated. In 1905 Lethbridge had put a new waterworks system into service where water was taken from filtered wells in the river bottom (charitably called ‘gravel’ strained). The epidemic led to the chlorination of Lethbridge’s water starting in 1916 and to the construction of a filtration plant that went into operation in 1917. Lethbridge would still have typhoid outbreaks (often associated with milk), but the water supply was greatly improved after 1916.

When people emigrate from one country to another they physically change places. This also means their new home will change because of their presence. This exhibition will gather the stories of why people decided to leave their home country post Second World War to very recently, and how Lethbridge and southwestern Alberta have changed because of the contributions they make to the community.

Healthy Eating Over the Holidays Are you worried holiday snacking will lead to extra weight gain? You may be surprised to learn the average weight gain from Thanksgiving to New Years is less than one pound, according to a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine. Although this isn't as much as you may think, it is still important to exercise portion control and get adequate amounts of daily activity during the holidays. Below are a few tips to help you eat all the goodies from Grandma’s kitchen while still feeling good about yourself. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.

Be realistic. Strive to maintain your current weight instead of losing weight over the holidays. Plan time for exercise and outdoor activities with your family. Don’t skip meals. Having a light snack before a party can help prevent over-indulging. Eat until you are satisfied, not stuffed. If you overeat at one meal, go lighter on the next one. It takes 500 calories per day above your normal consumption to gain one pound. 6. Treat yourself. It is impossible to gain one pound from a piece of pie.
