But we’re heartened to see so many people and organizations coming together to make it happen. At Cold Chain Technologies, we’ll continue to apply our deep expertise and decades of experience to the success of this global effort. ColdChainManagement February 2021

he pandemic and the lockdown that lasted for major part of 2020, proved to be testing times for various businesses including the logistics and supply chain sector of India which had a remarkable contribution in keeping the supply chain for essential items, functional, albeit with a few hurdles in the beginning. As per a recent report by Arthur D. Little India in collaboration with the CII, India’s Logistics and supply chain costs currently amount to a staggering 400 USD, up to 14% of the GDP, compared to the global average of 8%, raising a competitiveness gap of approximately USD 180 Billion. Further, the challenges experienced by the sector during the pandemic has highlighted the urgent need for building a stronger and more relevant infrastructure that can not only withstand the unexpected disruptions of this scale but is also agile enough to help adopt and bounce back to efficiency almost immediately in the face of future conflicts. Listed here are some of the key trends in the Indian Logistics and Supply Chain sector that are set to dominate 2021: 1.Emphasis on Cold Supply Chain: As per‘Indian Cold Chain Industry Outlook 2022’, the Indian cold supply chain sector is set to grow at a CAGR of 17-18%, till 2022, due to demand for cold storage, primarily driven by the pharma sector, especially the vaccine supply chain in early 2021, followed by

"Green logistics is going to be the key aspect of the supply chain evolution in the year 2021. requirements from seafood, meat and similar industries. While growth will be driven by introduction of a government led COVID immunization program, the growing e-commerce market for FMCG, dairy, meat and fish, will also help propethe sector significantly, given the ongoing virus threat. At present, healthcare products hold a 3.6% share in the overall Indian cold chain market that is expected to grow around 6% by end of 2021 as per IMARC services. 2. Growth in 3PL and 4PL providers as Manufacturing grows: Agility, speed and mobility are set to be the key goals for a robust supply chain network and preference of 3 and 4PL service providers is going to set the tone for development, in 2021. While manufacturing has been one of the early adopters of 3PL and 4PL service providers, soon other sectors are also likely to benefit from outsourcing their supply chain management to experts, so they could focus on rebuilding and strengthening the core business, especially in the

aftermath of the pandemic. Further, the evolution of these service ColdChainManagement February 2021 providers into key partners, offering expert, end to end solutions

Jan. 21, 2021| Alfa Laval – a world leader in heat transfer, centrifugal separation and fluid handling – has joined a project with DTU Energy, Haldor Topsoe, Svitzer and the Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller Center for Zero Carbon to accelerate the development of solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology, which can use green fuels to generate electricity. Alfa Laval will head the development initiative, with the aim to find scalable solutions for noncarbon fuels for the shipping industry. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) targets a 50 percent reduction of vessel-related greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Today, global shipping accounts for around 3 percent of global carbon emissions, a share which is estimated to increase in the coming decades (as other industries tackle climate emissions). To achieve the long-term target of decarbonization the industry must shift towards new fuel types and technologies. To accelerate the development of viable technologies, a coordinated effort within applied research is needed across the entire supply chain. The project, ‘SOFC4Maritime’, will target utilization of future green fuels – such as ammonia, hydrogen or bio-methane – for power production onboard marine vessels. “Addressing shipping’s environmental challenges – and climate change in particular – will require a diverse range of strong technologies. By partnering with fellow marine industry experts, we can investigate the possibilities and bring them to fruition in time to make a difference,” says Sameer Kalra, President of the Marine Division.

temperature-controlled storage and distribution of food related products, such as fish, meat, fruit, fruit juice and juice concentrate, milk and potato products. SSI SCHAEFER has proven to be a reliable partner in past joint projects, which led to the awarded project. A fully automatic, deep-freeze logistics center will call the City Terminal Rotterdam home – Cool Port 2. SSI SCHAEFER will supply about 4,100 tons of steel to erect a 6-aisle high bay warehouse with impressive dimensions too; 69 m length, 139 m width and 41 m height. The high bay warehouse consists of a silo design with the lateral walls and roof cover attached directly to the steelwork. Being a steelwork supplier, SSI SCHAEFER has erected numerous high bay warehouses with this type of silo design worldwide. Since Kloosterboer already did several successful projects with SSI SCHAEFER, it was an easy decision to award the contract to the reliable intralogistics experts. The requirements of the British sustainability certificate BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) are adhered to during the construction.

Technologies Temperature Controlled Distribution According to a report by the International Air Transport Association’s Centre of Excellence for Independent Validators in Pharmaceutical Logistics, 25 percent of the vaccines are degraded by the time they arrive at their destination, and temperature errors cause losses of around $34.1 billion. Distribution of Covid-19 vaccines should be done via a temperature-controlled cold chain, as these vaccines are highly sensitive and require constant checks. In a warmer climate such as India, Cold-chain logistics are particularly difficult to manage. The major issue with India's cold storage facilities is their capacity to transport vaccines at the required temperature. Some vaccines being developed might need to be stored at up to -70 degree Celsius, whereas India's cold storage network that is used for the government's universal immunization

The important question however is the tracking of the vaccines and how can it be done? Advanced technologies such as sensors and interconnected IoT ( Internet of Things) devices must be used to track the vaccines. These devices can alert you in various situations such as Opening of doors in unusual situations, Diversion of the route by the driver, Unusual stoppage of

January 25, 2021 | Singapore can save massive amounts of energy by modernizing its existing building mass. Between 30 and 40 percent is a realistic possibility. And Danfoss’ new Smart Buildings Training Center in Singapore is busy paving the way for the change to happen. Since the opening late last year, more than 30 consultants, contractors, and installers have already participated in trainings here. Johnny Lim, Mechanical, Engineering & Plumbing Consultant at Surbana Jurong, one of Singapore’s biggest infrastructure consultancy groups, says:“In the center, you can make adjustments to different system installations, so you understand the energy efficiency impact of Danfoss’ products. The center does a good job demonstrating the possibilities.”Singapore aims to have cut its CO2 emissions by 50 percent in 2050 – and wants to have realized a big chunk already in 2030 in the form of energy-savings in buildings. According to Danfoss President, Asia Pacific Region, Niels Robert Arbjerg, this makes

good sense as Singapore is one of the world’s most populated countries. About four fifths of the population lives in high-rise buildings – many of them 25+ years old. “So, the potential for savings by replacing existing cooling, heating, and ventilation systems with more effective ones is huge. And this is exactly where we can step in. The possibilities are enormous.”Cities account for 40 percent of all energy-use worldwide. So, governments,

municipalities, and city planners have energy-savings in buildings high on their agenda. Facts: Danfoss’ Smart Buildings Center contains a range of installations showing how our technology can save energy in buildings. For example, an old air-handling unit versus a modern one using Danfoss technology – both hooked up to a computer – demonstrate that we can save 25 percent energy on airhandling alone. Another unit shows how the world’s most energy-effective compressor works. It’s Danfoss’ oil-free Turbocor® compressor.

The new GEA PowerPak PLUS technology – now with more sustainable packaging alternative using paper

he GEA PowerPak PLUS thermoforming packaging machine lends itself to a range of different packaging solutions, including handling protection, vacuum, MAP and shrink packaging. GEA has recently added a new dimension of versatility to the PowerPak PLUS by making it possible to use a more sustainable paper-based packaging alternative with this technology. The new packaging option is made from a moldable paper composite consisting of more than 80

Thanks to technological advances, the machine can be fully relied on to safely process this delicate material.

“The packaging market is currently in a state of flux,” explains Volker Sassmannshausen, Senior Product Manager Thermoforming Packaging Systems at GEA. “While consumers and food retailers are demanding reductions in plastic usage, the food industry must ensure safe

packaging from beginning to end of the supply chain. Not only must all hygiene and quality standards be met, but also legal requirements which call for a significant reduction in the amount of plastic used in packaging. When developing our machines, we always take our cues from what our customers need, so this was an obvious focus area for us.”

Problem-free paper forming The GEA thermoformer ensures the highest packaging quality, efficiency and consumer convenience. Thanks to technical modifications, this packaging machine can now also easily mold coated paper. A series of functions, including those dedicated to unwinding and feeding the delicate materials as well as the newly developed multi-zone heating system, which is paired with sophisticated sealing, ensure that fresh foods are safely and hygienically packaged. In turn, solutions to simplify pack opening and material separation make it easy for consumers to separate the paper from the plastic for disposal in their relevant recycling streams.
