Windows of the east coast There is a window in a house where someone used to live.

There is a window in a house where someone will live.

There is a window in a house where someone is living.

東海岸的窗 すでに人の住んでいない家の窓もある。 これから人の住む家の窓もある。 いま人の住んでいる家の窓もある。

Encountering them makes various images flash across my mind. I wonder whether it happens only to me. それらと対面した時、 いろんな映像が脳裏で再生されるのは私だけだろうか。

A warm orange light from a window in the dark of night. Inside a family is having happy moments at home; a wrinkled old woman is watching TV on a couch while men enjoying a drink.

Through those windows facing the Pacific Ocean, abundant morning sunshine and sea breeze would be brought to them.

And furthermore, around the windows, I also see old walls, which remind me of an old man’s deeply creased face. I wonder what history they have been watching; they must have witnessed the Japanese colonial era and the White Terror under the Kuomintang’s rule, as well as every family event like weddings, birthdays, and funerals.

And then what are they going to witness?

These thoughts urge me to turn my camera to get a shot.

窓越しに大声で世間話をしているおばちゃんたち。 子供にいってらっしゃいと手を振るお母さん。 夜の暗闇の中、 オレンジ色に浮かび上がる窓の光。 その中には楽しそうな家族の団欒。 ソファに腰掛けテレビを 見ている皺だらけのおばあさん。 酒を酌み交わす男たち。 太平洋が見えるその窓からは朝日や潮風が惜しみも 無く入ってくるだろう。 さらには、 その窓の周りには年月を重ねてきた壁。 まるで老齢のおじいさんの顔に刻まれた深い皺のようである。 この壁たちはどのようなドラマをこれまで見てきたのだろうか。 過去には日本時代も経験しただろう。 国民党によ る白色テロも見てきただろう。 結婚式や誕生日の嬉しい日も、 葬式の悲しい日もみんなを見守ってきただろう。 そしてこれからどんな人間ドラマを見ていくのか。

そんなことを思うとカメラを向けざるをえないのである。

It was in 2005 that I visited Taiwan for the first time just to stop over on my way back from a backpacking trip around Southeast Asia. I stayed only a few days at Taipei and my first impression on Taiwan is “exotic”.

After that, I got a chance to take part in an event of “Artist in Residence” held at New Taipei City Gold Museum in New Taipei City in 2012, which then made me feel “nostalgic” rather than “exotic”, as I saw a lot of architectural structures of the Japanese colonial era in Jinguashi and Jiufen, and had some opportunities to talk with the elderly who speak Japanese.

Since then I often come to Taiwan, especially to the east coast after I visited Ilisin Harvest Festival in Tabaron (Taibalang) Village, Hualien in 2016. Through the visits, another different feel to Taiwan was created in my mind again, which is “unique created by a melting pot of Chinese, Japanese and indigenous culture”. At first, I started to take photos for my interest in the unique and open-minded east coasters, but gradually the residential walls and windows came to catch my eyes since I came to feel that patterns on them are telling a long history as well as an old man’s deeply creased face convinces us.

I like abstract art, but it is difficult to draw an impactive one. Impact comes from necessity and those walls and windows seem to be the abstract pictures with necessity. Therefore, when I see them, I feel as if I saw excellent abstract art.

The windows on the east coast of the Pacific Ocean keep watching the horizon. Both good and bad must have come and is coming over the horizon. A hope that Japan, my home country, meets Taiwan to bring something good over the horizon might be one of factors that drove me to take these photos.
