Welcome Thank you for your interest in becoming an apprenticeship employer. There is no doubt that current and future governments will continue to place huge importance on the provision of high quality apprenticeships as a key contributor to continued economic growth. Many local employers continue to find apprenticeships hugely beneficial as they provide the opportunity to upskill their current workforce as well as identify new talent to support business development - at relatively low cost.

CI Business Solutions at Colchester Institute provides a one-stop shop for workforce skills training and development needs across a wide range of industry sectors, bringing together a wealth of experience in delivering apprenticeships, accredited qualifications and commercial training. The College currently delivers apprenticeship training programmes to over 2,200 students each year, drawing upon the extensive industry knowledge and experience of its 500 strong qualified teaching staff.

This guide aims to provide you with the information you need to make an informed choice about apprenticeships. However a book can’t tell you everything and we’d love to come and meet you, or welcome you to the College, for a more detailed discussion about the benefits of apprenticeships. It may be that your business is investing in apprenticeships for the first time, or you may be considering how you can get the best value from your apprenticeship levy allocation. As the largest provider of apprenticeships in Essex we are ready to meet your requirements.

We have a proud history of providing high quality technical skills to support local business. An investment in state-of-theart training facilities including a new £10m Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) centre at the College’s Sheepen Road Campus, opened in 2016, is part of a £20m three year redevelopment programme across the Colchester and Braintree campuses specifically designed to meet the requirements of local employers.

We really look forward to the opportunity of working together. Alison Andreas Principal and Chief Executive

We look forward to working with you to provide training and recruitment services to assist your business adjectives. Gary Horne Executive Vice Principal

Invest in your workforce Apprenticeships are an excellent way to support your organisation by harnessing new talent or helping to upskill your existing workforce. We offer apprenticeships in a number of different subjects allowing you to select the relevant training to meet your business needs. Your apprentice may be required to visit our Colchester, Braintree or Clacton campus or in some cases training and assessments can be carried out in the workplace. This guide is designed to provide you with all the information you need to kick start the process of employing an apprentice, although our team are always on hand to answer any further questions you may have (contact details are listed below).

What is an Apprenticeship? An apprenticeship is your chance to employ an individual committed to learning and developing their skills within your organisation. Typically an apprentice will be expected to work full time, with time spent away from the workplace to study for a nationally recognised qualification, although this will depend on the type of apprenticeship. The best part is that an apprentice is a contracted employee meaning you get a full resource whilst investing in your future workforce needs.

Key facts • Up to 28,000 apprenticeship vacancies are available online at any one time. • More than 1,300 employers are involved in designing the new apprenticeship standards. • 194 apprenticeship standards have been published so far, of which over 60 are higher and degree apprenticeships. • 19% of advanced apprentices progress to higher education. • Almost 9 out of every 10 apprenticeship employers hoping to achieve business benefits tell us that apprenticeships deliver. • There are currently 75 higher and degree apprenticeships available. • After finishing, the majority of apprentices (90%) will stay in employment with 7 in 10 staying with the same employer. APPRENTICESHIP LEVY ARE YOU READY? From April 2017 the way that government funds apprenticeships in England will be changing. All UK businesses with a wage bill of over ÂŁ3 million will be required to contribute to the apprenticeship levy. If the levy applies to your business you will be required to pay 0.5% of your entire wage bill into the levy. This will be offset against a levy allowance worth ÂŁ15,000 for each tax year. Every levy paying employer will have a digital account showing their levy payments. The only way employers will able to use their levy payments will be through government backed apprenticeships. Government will provide a 10% top-up payment to your levy account every month. Each monthly levy payment and 10% government top-up will expire after 24 months if you do not use them for apprenticeships within your business. At CI Business Solutions we can provide expert advice and guidance on all areas of apprenticeship provision, including helping you find the right apprenticeship for your business, recruiting apprentices, quality delivery and assessment with on-going support and advice.

What’s changing in April 2017? • By 2020 all apprenticeship frameworks will be replaced by standards.

• National funding rates will be replaced by ‘negotiated’ rates, with maximum rates set by the government for their contribution. • An anticipated additional £1bn will be raised through levies for apprenticeship training nationally.

What does this mean for employers? The changes are intended to meet employer skills needs and to increase employer demand. Employers will have far more control over the content and assessment (standards) of apprenticeships and the ability to negotiate fees for delivery and assessment. The Institute for Apprenticeships, a new independent body led by employers, will lie at the heart of ensuring the quality of apprenticeships in England. New Apprenticeship standards The first of a range of high quality apprenticeship standards were introduced in 2014. Designed by employers for employers the new standards are improving the quality of apprenticeships and providing the skills that employers need to ensure that apprenticeships support businesses to grow and prosper.

8

What is different about apprenticeship standards? The employer-designed apprenticeship standards set out what an apprentice will be able to do on completion of their apprenticeship. All standards will include maths and English, where a current GCSE A-C grade has not yet been achieved. The new apprenticeships assess an apprentice through a rigorous end point assessment, designed by employers, which will ensure that the apprentice really can do the job they’ve trained for before completing their training. The table on page 9 shows the new apprenticeship standards scheduled for 2017. Many more standards covering a wide range of occupations are in the pipeline. A government financial enhancement is available to employers who recruit a 16-18 year old apprentice. Our dedicated CI Business Solutions team will be able to help with further guidance.
