Your

Dearly

3-Month-Old

Your Dearly Loved 3-month-old is growing by leaps and bounds. He or she is now beginning to sleep for longer stretches of time. You may find yourself with more time to accomplish tasks, and hopefully you are allowing yourself time to rest.

God made

plants and animals. God made

you and me!

Your baby is growing stronger every day! 3-month-old babies are starting to hold up their heads with almost no wobble. Their upper and lower body muscles are getting stronger, and tummy time is beginning to be a bit more fun. Try lying down on your stomach next to your baby. Place toys or rattles on the floor and move them around as you talk to him or her. Three-month-old babies are learning how begin tracking objects with their eyes. Soon your baby’s neck will be strong enough to track objects by turning their head. You will likely start having more and more conversations with your baby as he or she grows in their ability to express themselves. Your baby is learning to interact with you and with the world in smiles, gestures, and sounds. These conversation times are fully of growth and learning for your baby, and can be a ton of fun!

God Made You

Rock-a-Bye

After a bath, give your baby a massage with baby lotion. As you massage your baby, name each body part. Remind him or her that God made them and God loves them. For example, massage your child’s legs one at a time and say, “These are your legs that God made. God loves you, and I do too.” Then massage your child’s belly and say, “This is your belly that God made. God loves you, and I do too.”

Hold your baby in your arms, and rock them back and forth. Experiment with rocking in various positions. Rocking, and other rhythmic movements through space helps develop your baby’s vestibular system which is responsible for balance. In addition to the amazing developmental benefits, rocking helps give your baby a connection and closeness with you. Rocking helps to develop your baby’s trust in you, in themselves, in the world around them, and in turn their trust in God.

Prepare to Wonder

Come Together

Faith Word: SPIRIT

Supplies: Wind repro sheet, crayons and markers

As Christians we celebrate Pentecost as the “birthday of the church”—the day God sent the“Spirit” to the followers of Jesus. Originally, Pentecost was one of three Jewish festivals when the Jewish people would gather in Jerusalem. Before Jesus died, he promised his followers he would not leave them alone. Jesus told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit. The followers of Jesus did not know what to expect as they waited. It was a time of uncertainty. They were probably anxious and scared. During this time of waiting in Jerusalem, the disciples and other followers of Jesus were celebrating Pentecost. While they were celebrating, the Holy Spirit arrived. A sound from heaven like a howling wind filled the house. They saw flames like fire above each person’s head and they began to speak in other languages. The excitement surrounding the arrival of the Holy Spirit attracted a crowd. Not everyone in the crowd was immediately convinced of the Holy Spirit’s presence. Some said they were witnessing the effects of strong wine. Peter responded to this accusation and began to preach. It must have been a powerful sermon! The Bible says about three thousand believers were baptized that day. Our Faith Word this week is “Spirit”. A simple definition of the word “Spirit” is, “God’s presence, that guides, comforts, and strengthens us” .The Holy Spirit did not just come to the disciples, but to each person gathered . The presence of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost, comforted those who missed Jesus. The Spirit gave guidance and strength to God’s people to spread the good news about Jesus. We may not hear rushing wind, see flames of fire above one another’s heads, or speak in strange languages, but God’s Spirit is with each of us. The Holy Spirit continues to empower us and give us the courage to do God’s work in the world. The concept of the Holy Spirit is sometimes a difficult one for children and adults to understand. It is okay to admit to your children that the stories in the Bible can be hard to understand and that you don’t know all the answers. Tell the children you will read the Bible together. You will wonder and explore together how much God loves us and how we are part of God’s family.

Spiritual Practice for Adults: Light a candle and watch the way the flame dances in the breeze, as if searching for the place God is calling the flame to be. Pray for the courage and empowerment to to do God’s work in the world.

As Christians today, we celebrate Pentecost as the “birthday of the church.” Pentecost originated as a Jewish festival. Pentecost was one of three pilgrimage feasts when Jews gathered in Jerusalem. Jesus had told the disciples to wait in Jerusalem for the gift of the Holy Spirit. It was a time of uncertainty for Jesus’ followers. It is likely they were anxious and scared. During this time of waiting in Jerusalem, the disciples and other followers of Jesus were celebrating Pentecost. While they were celebrating, the Spirit arrived. The Spirit arrived sounding like the wind and appearing like fire. This was a great mystery. Everyone was able to understand and speak in other languages and knew God was working in their lives in mysterious ways. The excitement surrounding the arrival of the Holy Spirit attracted a crowd. Not everyone in the crowd was immediately convinced of the Spirit’s presence. Many people were shocked, surprised, and confused. Like many of us, they wondered what this might all mean. The Spirit did not just come to the disciples, but to each person gathered there. The Spirit empowered God’s people and gave them the courage to continue to spread the good news about Jesus. We may not hear rushing wind or see licks of fire descending on one another, but God’s Spirit continues to empower us and give us the courage to do God’s work.

• Invite children to wonder about the word spirit. On a piece of paper, encourage

them to write or draw about the word “Spirit”. Let them place their ideas in the Wonder Box. • Give each child this week’s Activity Sheet to do while waiting for everyone to arrive.

( This will be a puzzle, life connection article, journaling prompt, or easy craft.) Tip: Children do not have to place their papers in the Wonder Box. Remind children that some of the ideas placed in the box will be shared during the story time.

The concept of the Holy Spirit is sometimes a difficult one for children and adults to understand. It is okay to admit to your children that you don’t have all the answers. Mystery is a part of faith.

Spiritual Practice for Adults: This week, take time to stop, pay attention, and notice God’s Spirit working in your daily life. Set a clock to remind you. When your reminder goes off, spend a few minutes in prayer, reading the Pentecost scripture lesson, or sitting silently to feel God’s Holy Spirit. Pentecost originated as a Jewish festival that occurred fifty days after Passover. It is also considered the birthday of the Christian church. Pentecost was a feast and pilgrimage holiday. On Pentecost Day, many people had gathered in Jerusalem, including the disciples, who were all in one place. A sudden, fierce wind filled the house they were in, and flames alighted on each of them. In the Bible, fierce wind and fire are often used as symbols of God’s presence.

Share a Story • Invite children to join you in a circle on the floor. • Read the Bible story (Acts 2:1-12).

The disciples were filled with the Holy Spirit and began speaking in other languages. Religious Jews from all over the world had traveled to Jerusalem to celebrate Pentecost. Each of them began to hear and understand what the disciples were saying in their own native language. The people asked each other, “What does this mean?”

• Watch the video. (The video will be a 10-14-year-old child helping the children in your classroom process the story through wonder.)

Wonder Time

Peter began to preach and advised them to change their hearts and lives and be baptized so that they could receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, which had been promised by Jesus. About three thousand people were baptized that day.

Supplies: Wonder Box

Wonder with me:

The Spirit may be a difficult concept for the children to grasp. There are things about the Spirit that even adults do not fully understand. Essentially, the Spirit can be explained as God’s presence in our lives. It guides us, comforts us, and strengthens our faith. As you teach the children about the Holy Spirit, remember that it is okay for there to be questions that can’t be answered. The main thing that you’ll want the children to come away from the session with is an understanding that God is with them through the Holy Spirit.

❍ How would you answer the question from the story, “What does it mean?” ❍ What did you find surprising about this Bible story? ❍ How would you have reacted at the appearance of a howling wind and flames of fire landing on people?

Spiritual Practice for Adults:

SAY: Let’s read aloud our answers to the Wonder Question that you answered earlier and talk about the Spirit.

As you attempt to gain a better understanding of the Spirit and prepare to teach your children about it, take a few moments to engage in the following spiritual practice. Sit in a quiet space, and light a candle. Close your eyes, and listen for what the Spirit is saying to you today. How is the Spirit, guiding, comforting, or strengthening you? Consider doing this practice daily during the week leading up to your class.

• Read each answer from the box out loud.

Wonder with me: ❍ What are your thoughts on your answers now that we’ve read the Bible story?

Come Together

• Allow the children to discuss their thoughts about the answers. SAY: I hope that you will remember that the Spirit is God’s presence that guides, comforts, and strengthens our faith.

Supplies: paper, writing utensils, Wonder Box Before Class: Write today’s wonder question, “What do you think the Spirit is like?” on a

PENTECOST

ACTS 2:1-41

It was Pentecost, and the followers of Jesus were all together. Suddenly, a sound like wind filled the room. The disciples looked around and saw little flames of fire on each of them. It was the Holy Spirit—God’s Spirit that would be with them always. They were surprised. People outside the house heard the noise. “What is happening?” the people wondered. Peter told them: “God has sent the Holy Spirit to us. The people listened to Peter. Peter told the people about God’s love shown through Jesus.

WONDER: How do you think the Holy Spirit might visit you today?

Why Christmas Trees Aren’t Perfect

The Advent Jesse Tree

This book enables individuals and families to engage in a more meaningful celebration of the Christmas season. Long, long ago, in a land far away, lived a perfect little tree named Small Pine. Small Pine hoped to maintain its perfect form and be selected by the Queen as her Christmas tree. But as the warm-hearted little tree gave shelter to birds, rabbits, and deer in the forest, its branches became damaged. Fortunately, the Queen had a different idea of perfection. Young readers will want to read and reread the story of how Small Pine’s love and charity for its friends helps make it the most “perfect” Christmas Tree of all.

Finding Bethlehem in the Midst of Bedlam

When did Christmas get so chaotic? How about on the very night Jesus was born? We tend to picture softly lowing cows and a cozy stable. In reality, Bethlehem was the picture of bedlam. But in the midst of confusion, God broke through and Jesus was born. This five-chapter Advent study explores how God can still be heard over our human noise. Includes Reproducibles.

Luis y Mia/Mia and Luis Luis y Mia/Mia and Luis is the story of a cross-cultural friendship told from each child’s perspective. Luis, the child of Mexican immigrants, and Mia, a white American child, don’t get off on the right foot, but prayer and thoughtful conversations with family help the children develop a lasting friendship. The flipbook helps children ages 6–9 understand the importance of showing love to people who are different, of apologizing when you’re wrong, of forgiving others, and of making everyone feel welcome. English and Spanish versions of both stories are included. 9781501874277 $9.99

ROTATION STATIONS

Deep Blue Rotation Stations Immerse your children in the Bible with a rotational curriculum from Cokesbury! Ideal for churches using a rotation format where children alternate between learning stations each week. Engage children in Bible stories and characters by using your volunteers’ skills as artists, cooks, technicians, or fun-loving teachers! In a rotational learning setting, the same Bible story or theme is taught for several weeks. Each week, learners rotate to a different station. The story remains the same, but children encounter it in different ways in each station. Repetition is an important part of learning the Bible!
