To compile art, an opportunity.
My passion for creative art has drawn me to various places, ones I would never have tread of my own accord without a tint of artistic curiosity A journey where I got to walk the mystery, arid landscape of people’s brilliant minds, their intellect, and their thinking! As I sit here typing these words, I am living the reality right now, by the opportunity to beautify and present the work of my fellow Toastmasters
As much as I like to write my own words, I incline more toward reading other people’s works or listening to their speeches. It takes me on a journey through other people’s vivid cerebral patterns and is a meditation on how my own could work.
Being able to compile my fellow mates’ writing and stringing them in order is an honor I wouldn’t swap for anything else.

Mybabysteps-PastPresident’s Address
The year was 2011. Timid steps, propelled by the gentle hands of colleagues like DTM Kamarudhin, TM Anwar, DTM Hareesh, and DTM Mahesh, led me to my first Toastmasters podium at the Saudi Kayan Corporate Toastmasters Club. That initial tremor ignited a flame within, and my journey unfolded across Saudi Arabia: The Elite Toastmasters Club, the Marafiq Toastmasters Club, and finally, the community-driven Periyar Toastmasters Club.
There, under the unwavering guidance of my mentor, Raghupathy Krishnakumar, a champion at every level, my voice found its strength, and my leadership wings sprouted
Life's busy currents pulled me back to Coimbatore, but the Toastmasters' spirit refused to be stilled The call of the gavel remained irresistible, and soon, I found myself amidst the vibrant Coimbatore Toastmasters Club (CTC). They entrusted me with the immense responsibility of leading their last EXCOM, and what a journey it was! The talented and dedicated EXCOM team was the melody to my rhythm, each member a note contributing to the symphony of success.
We owe a debt of gratitude to the maestro of humor, TM Karkuvel Raja, who regaled us with his winning speech. TM Ramki Vijayan's masterful evaluation session honed our skills, while TM Jayasree Madam unveiled the secrets of expressive artistry.
Sri Sandeep of PSG enlightened us on the captivating world of podcasts, and DTM Joe, DTM Sindhu, DTM Rakesh Menon, TM Sivasailam Sir, and TM Akash provided invaluable support and encouragement, their contributions the harmonious chords of our success.
The guidance of our Area Director, TM Muthukumar, and Division Director, TM Sakthi, echoed like guiding whispers, propelling us forward. But the true applause belongs to the most incredible audience - the aspiring and amazing members of CTC, whose presence transformed every event into a standing ovation.

Whatisthepurposeoflife?
"Often, I have thought, 'What is this life about? What is the purpose of our life?' To elaborate, let it be any of your famous favorite people, be it Amitabh Bachchan or Sachin; their purpose in my life is no different from ours! Irrespective of age, gender, social and economic status, or education, the purpose of every human being is to live a happy life, and the ability to live such a life is within us! Have we ever realized the only person who can stop us from being happy is ourselves?
In any situation, we will always have two choices:
To be happy with what we have or to be sad.
To work towards what we want or to complain.
To be strong and face what is in front of us or to crib about where we stand. Our choices would be wiser, and our mindset stronger, if only we realized it is the small things that bring happiness in life! Maturity in life comes with realizing that life is all about finding happiness in the little things around us. So, ladies and gentlemen who read this, welcome to the world of joy and happiness!
In this article, I wish to take you to the land of happiness, filled with little things of joy. I am sure all of you can relate this to your childhood. When it rains on a holiday, and we used to jump in joy at the first sight of rain, our mother would curse nature as she runs out to get the clothes that are drying on the terrace. How can one same thing bring different kinds of emotions in a child and an adult? Because as we grow, we evolve and change as we forget to enjoy the little things in life Worrying has become a hazardous habit for almost every grownup adult in this modern society. Modern-day education and career building have shown us how to worry over every small aspect rather than teaching us how to enjoy every little thing.
When was the last time we enjoyed our cup of tea, cherished the smile of our child, or acknowledged a nod from our security? When did we allow ourselves to be happy about all these things which we often take for granted? The round of life is complete with gratitude, living in the moment, and cherishing every small success. Kind gestures and sharing make life worth living. Gratitude and thanksgiving to everyone around who care for us and sharing love - these acts like magnets of happiness. Let's remember, happiness always follows grateful hearts.

If you think about the last time you were so excited about a joyful moment in your life, if you get to relive 30 seconds of those joyful moments, how would you feel? Amazing, isn’t it? When I got a new car recently, I was head over heels. I named it with love, and when I touched the steering wheel for the first time, there were sparks as love was in the air! I still remember that day vividly, adrenaline rushing as I pressed my feet upon the accelerator. But what happens when I drove it the next day, or after a year? Obviously, the excitement slowly died. Every day, irrespective of time, if only one would love what we have - it could be anything: our car, our desk, our phone, or our iPad - and feel excited about owning it and absolutely enjoy the pleasure of using it.
Then, every day of ours is going to be filled with excitement. This is the case with any relationship or work; as time passes, your interest fades But this doesn’t apply to marital relationships. They say the relationship between husband-and-wife ages like wine :) But one thing we forget during the course of our lives is to express our love for things and our relationships. Being expressive and sharing love with our loved ones brings happiness to us and to them.
As we think along these lines, I just wanted to share the inspiration I derived from something simple. All of us want to be a happier person than we are now. We can take inspiration from happier living models all around us They teach us to be joyful and merrier. Yes! I’m referring to children. Have we ever realized there is no one who doesn't like children? They are pleasing at sight and give pleasure to everyone whom they interact with. The quality of children that make this possible is their childlike nature For the benefit of the readers, I would like to note that there is a difference between being childlike and being childish :)
Enjoying every little thing in life, being happy about everything they own makes them the happy and wonderful beings that they are! That is a quality from which we need to truly get inspired. With curiosity and innocence towards life, we will stay happy, and that’s what being childlike truly means! Like how Casa Bianca trusted his father, we should trust this universe, believe in our dreams, and get up every time, after a fall, with passion
Science says people who are continuously learning, develop imagination and creativity show delayed signs of aging. Let all of us be continuous learners all our life, not just in childhood
And finally, one can find true happiness only in the service to humankind. Our knowledge, wealth, efforts, and actions get meaningful only when applied in the service to society. And when that benefits any other individual or mankind, society, or environment, that is the holy grail of happiness!
Let’s remember, for every human being, it’s not just a dream to be happy, but their right. And it’s all in our own hands, how we find joy and happiness in the little things!"

Year-endEscapade:AWhirlwind AdventureinThiruvananthapuram
Embarking on a year-end escapade is always a thrill, until your list of activities turns into a ticking time bomb in the last fortnight of the year. In the midst of a chilly December, serendipity struck when I stumbled upon available train tickets from Coimbatore to Thiruvananthapuram (TVM). Without hesitation, I seized the opportunity, booking my passage to a destination that had lingered on my to-do list for quite some time.
Upon my arrival in TVM, I faced the challenge of finding a hotel room, courtesy of a city hosting a bustling film festival. Film students and buffs had claimed most of the accommodations, but after a bit of persistence, I secured a room. The following morning, as I ventured out for breakfast, I was pleasantly surprised by the culinary options. Puttu with channa gravy, a personal favorite, awaited me, and I savored every bite. Amidst scheduled customer meetings, I struck up a friendship with a friendly auto driver who generously shared fascinating stories and insights about the city.
My primary goal was to explore the renowned Padmanabha Swamy Temple, visit nearby museums, and soak in the coastal ambiance. Much to my delight, everything unfolded seamlessly . The temple, with its grandeur, left me aweinspired, even though the crowd required a patient wait to catch a glimpse of the deity. Post-temple, I joined the queue for a sumptuous lunch served on big, red Kerala rice, relishing every flavor.
Energized by the day's experiences, I took a brief nap before diving into the city's attractions wax museum, art gallery, royal palace tour, and a picturesque visit to the beach for sunset. As I reflect on this remarkable day, I am immensely grateful for taking a day off to indulge in a solo adventure and create lasting memories.
In the tapestry of year-end celebrations, this spontaneous trip to Thiruvananthapuram stands out as a vibrant thread, weaving together unexpected encounters, cultural revelations, and the simple joy of exploration. Taking a day off for oneself, away from the hustle and bustle, proved to be the perfect recipe for rejuvenation and joy. As I pen down the tales of my great day, the memories echo with gratitude for seizing the opportunity to make 2023 end on an exhilarating note. Cheers to the adventures that await in the new year!

Acallforaction!
Greetings to our Toastmasters tribe! Ready to embark on a journey where obstacles aren't barriers but stepping stones?
Once upon a time, one country went through a crisis. To overcome the crisis, the people were required to take action and be responsible. However, the people did not. The worried king planned to teach them a lesson.
What was his plan? Do you want to know?
The king’s plan was simple: He placed a large stone in the middle of the main road, completely blocking entry to the city Then, he would hide nearby and observe their actions
How would they respond? Would they band together to remove it? Or would they get discouraged, quit, and return home?
With arousing curiosity, the king watched the people’s actions. Many people openly complained about the king or fortune, but none managed to do anything about it.
After several days, a lone peasant came along on his way into town Once he saw the stone, without thinking, he tried to push it out of the way but he could not. Then an idea came to him: He rushed into the nearby woods to find something he could use for leverage. Finally, he dislodged the massive rock from the road.
Beneath the rock, there were a purse of gold coins and a note from the king:
What was written in the note? I will tell you at the end.
In my opinion, overcoming any obstacles requires three critical steps The acronym for this is PAW.
P stands for Perception, A stands for Action, W stands for Will.
What is Perception?
It is how we see and understand what occurs around us Our perceptions can be a source of strength or of great weakness.
As Shakespeare said, “Nothing is either good or bad, but thinking makes it so.”
COIMBATORE TOASTMASTERS CLUB IMPRINT
TM Edison
What is action?
Action is commonplace. Step by step, by action, we can break down the problem, and finally, we will dismantle the obstacle in front of us. Anything we want to achieve in our life totally depends on our actions.
What is Will?
Will is our internal power, which can never be affected by the outside world It is our final trump card. No matter how many times we are thrown back, we alone retain the power to go once more. Or to try another route. Or, at the very least, to accept this reality and aim for something new.
How did I incorporate these things into my life?
All my life, I have been facing a speech impediment problem. Earlier, I was really worried about what people would think about me if I stammered. So, I always had low self-esteem and avoided speaking in front of people. But one particular quote changed my perception. That quote is, “It never ceases to amaze me: we all love ourselves more than others, but care about others' opinions more than our own ”
I repeated this quote again and again, and it gave me some confidence. That is how I changed my perception. I have taken certain actions to overcome this. Earlier, I avoided and ran away from speaking. But nowadays, I have taken action over this I have consulted with a speech therapist and got some ideas, and I am trying to apply them in my day-to-day life I joined the Toastmasters club to face the problem head-on.
Today, I stand in front of you because I have changed my perception and taken action. No matter how many times I fail, I will try this again and again. I am still facing the problem, but it cannot stop me. I have the willpower to overcome this Friends, what is stopping you? Are you facing a physical problem? Economic problem? Lack of education? Or what else?
Face your problem. You will find your way.
Finally, do you want to know what was written in the king’s note? This is what was written: "The obstacle in the path becomes the path Never forget, within every obstacle is an opportunity to improve our condition."
I really believe we can all find opportunities in our obstacles.

Resolution:Acaseforguilt-trip?
Hey, an interesting question! Have you ever taken a New Year's resolution? Well, most certainly! who hasn't? It'd hardly take a minute You've probably thought of a particularly regal ambition that you'd like achieved; why go for something trite when you could state your most ambitious ones? Now for a more uneasy question: how long were you able to pursue the chosen goal? The whole year? A month? Or, more realistically, a day?
How many of us have failed, awaking every morning with a bit of guilt nudging at us? What if I were to tell you that you are not indolent in any way merely because of it?
We've all observed how crowded the gyms and parks are on the first of January, with people monstrously lifting weights or speed walking on the tarmac, only for the enthusiasm - and more significantly, the count - to dwindle from the very next day on. My younger, callow self has certainly been a victim of this in many such instances where I created an over-reaching goal and miserably failed at it Yes, the guilt trip was fun, by the way, thanks for asking!
Making an achievable resolution is not about winning battles, but fighting the right one Imagine bringing a knife to a gunfight. How out of place would it be? That is exactly what the majority of us do. We confuse our long-term tantalizing goals with the short, achievable, actionoriented ones that get more refined with each completion, not realizing that one inevitably leads to the other
It is important to have long-term goals because that is what drives us as human beings. But without short-term goals to support it, they are akin to a sword with an extraordinary blade but without a handle to wield it.
Picture yourself desiring to scale a huge mountain; it certainly is an arduous task. Climbing to the summit is a romantic and poetic thought But when you set out to do it, you naturally check for the logistics of the situation. How do I ensure my safety? How do I ration my resources as I navigate to the summit? Which path would lead me most efficiently? How physically and mentally capable am I to endure it?
You break it down into smaller parts and only after a sagacious exegesis do you embark on it. The same goes for our resolutions. Our ambitions are figuratively called mountains for a reason!

TM Nachiket
It is necessary to winnow out the unwanted from the wanted And out of all the clutter, our path to tread lays bare in broad daylight If you've made your resolution, congratulations! For you took the first step, which is actually half the way.
You have introspected deeply enough to come out of the rut of analysis paralysis, as you gaze upon an amorphous and murky, but endearing "long-term goal, " and garnered actionable intel from it Now to just imbibe it into your daily routine.
AnodetoCTC-Apersonaltake
"I LOVE YOU, CTC". Toastmasters Club breathes life into my passion. Looking back over the year of this journey as a member in CTC has completely changed my personal and professional life There are so many takeaways from CTC, such as learning the nuanced elements of public speaking, connecting with people to create a new communication network system, exploring other club activities, and understanding each one's life story through public speaking. It helps me understand others' life experiences and apply the lessons I've learned to nurture my own life
Recently, I attended the area-level humorous and evaluation contest at KIT Toastmasters Club This contest totally changed my view of learning. I could see people from all age categories, witnessing their dedication and earnestness to learn about public speaking. It was truly amazing. It taught me the valuable lesson that "learning has no age limit." Another great moment was getting a chance to meet TM Karukavel in CTC
His speech gave me a new perspective on life. TM Karukavel is truly making a good difference in people's lives through his speech.
Beyond that, Toastmasters Club has changed my life in so many ways. It gives me the confidence to perform before an audience of 200 in my office. Then, I got opportunities to explore my passion through public speaking. It also paves the way for me to take adventurous steps on my journey. Besides, I learned this great lesson from Toastmasters Club: 'You are unique; you have a unique knack. Let's play on your own ground ' Toastmasters Club always remains a beautiful thing 'Keep learning, keep growing.'"

Warisover!
The war is over, my love!
Come sit by my side, Let's come out into the sun a while.
Is it a soft whimper I hear?
Well, let fall your tears, my beloved, It will moist a bit of the dry hollowness.
Let me rub the gunpowder off and feel your face, Put my arms around you and hold you tight. I could feel the deep hollow within, The humanness lost to make sense of the carnage.
Let's not think about it.
Come write down the synonyms of love with me, We shall then make it into a poem for dear old life. We'll need it for when we fathom all the numbers.
The accursed statistics, As though all the numbers in the world would make up, For even one boy laying face front in the fields, Where he should sport bare chested in the sun, Or kiss into the girl he loved.
Let's rebuild the towns, paint the walls with bright colors, Just so our grandchildren aren't reminded of our failures. As they walk these streets; where underneath, lay the charred rubble, and the boys buried among them.

"Who is your inspiration? If you are really following in your role model's footsteps, you can start seeing changes within yourself.
In the ice-breaking speech, we are usually expected to talk about ourselves, but today, I have chosen a different approach In my speech, I will discuss one of my role models who has been inspiring me for the past 12 years. He is the main reason for who I am today. You might think I am going to talk about a famous personality, but actually, my best friend is my inspiration. Fast forward to now, he is earning more than any of us I feel proud of him, and he is the sole reason why I joined Toastmasters.
Then came the next obstacle. He was as skinny as a skeleton in a laboratory and very weak He was like a punching bag for us We would easily beat him as if he were Steve Rogers before becoming Captain America. But despite all the mocks and insults, he decided to change. He started with walking, then jogging, and eventually running. Now, he has completed over 50 marathons, including 15+ half marathons, 5+ ultra runs, and numerous treks. Seeing his incredible transformation, I couldn't help but feel jealous, so I decided to join him. It's as if in a famous Tamil movie comedy where Vadivelu used to say, "Thottu Paaru Thottu Paara " Now, I am the punching bag for him. Well, nothing more to say.
Jokes apart, he has changed many things within me His goal is to provide employment to at least 10,000 people, and he works tirelessly day after day to achieve it. I haven't shared all these thoughts with him until now, so I planned to bring him here today so that he can see how much I admire him. GiveorTake?
"Give or Take? A classic question, I am sure many think they know the answer to. What is more important: to contribute or to consume, to give or to take, to provide or to obtain? Well, like most aspects of life, there is no single answer to this question A lot depends on several factors in any given situation
When it comes to the physicality of things (matter/action, even attitudes, etc.), everything is usually dualistic (good/bad, beautiful/ugly, constructive/destructive, etc ) in nature Likewise, both 'giving' and 'taking' are two aspects of a single activity, a transaction/communication, etc.
Considering a relationship as an example, we could say the best thing to do is to give/contribute However, if we focus just on verbal and non-verbal communications, it is better to 'take' instead of 'give', i.e., to 'Listen' (take) instead of 'Speak/talk' (give). I am sure all those who have even a little common sense would agree that it is better to listen than to speak. The hard part is putting this into practice, but that is a topic for another article. Another good example of 'take' being the better action is in a leadership/managerial role.
When there is a bottleneck situation, it is often helpful to take out the cause of concern (root cause) from the equation to achieve efficiency and effectiveness.
Some might say this attribute has more of a 'give' quality than 'take'. We could debate on it if that helps In general, we all know it is better to contribute/give than to consume/take, but not in all circumstances. I suppose the title must be 'Give & Take' instead of 'Give or Take', because there is no such thing as thorough-giving or thorough-receiving Life is a combo of both these actions if we consider anything wholesome. Fallacy steps in only when we break things down and judge individual aspects of life. Well, that is a bit of babbling from me on one of the aspects of life that has no absolute sides "

They were caught by her Vice Principal (VP) Upon seeing them together, do you know what the VP said? 'I came to know why you had this haircut.' She was genuinely surprised but promptly responded,
'Ma'am, don't judge based on appearance. '
This incident highlights how stereotypical thoughts persist from generation to generation "
Ladies and Gentlemen, these gendered products and stereotypes are more absurd than a cat trying to understand quantum physics.
But remember, whether you are using a Man razor or a Fem Razor, wearing pink or blue, male products or female products, male responsibility or female responsibility, let’s be clear: gender does not define us, but the world seems to think so.
Well, folks, if anyone is confused about which restroom to use, "For Him" or "For Her," I am not responsible if that adventure goes wrong. Just remember, I am a woman who can’t even open a bag of chips quietly.
Thank you for reading and may your deodorant choice always be your own!

Adapt: How We Can Learn from Nature’s Strangest Inventions by Amina Khan: Have you ever wondered what soldiers and fashion designers could possibly learn from a cuttlefish? Or how the humble sea cucumber and squid could revolutionize surgical implants? Imagine the architectural marvels inspired by insect structures, or networks optimized through ants' collective intelligence. Amina Khan's riveting exploration in her book delves into these questions, showcasing nature's effortless solutions to problems we spend decades and fortunes trying to tackle with technology This book is a treasure trove for anyone curious about the intersection of biology, design, and technology #biomimicry #popularscience #biology #nature #design

1491: New Revelations of the Americas Before Columbus by Charles C. Mann: We always talk about Columbus “discovering” America This book shatters the conventional narrative of pre-Columbian America as a sparsely populated wilderness Mann reveals the rich cultures and societies like Incas, Aztecs and Mayas that thrived in the Americas before European arrival, offering a corrective to centuries of historical oversight. It’s an enlightening read that expands our understanding of American history before Columbus's arrival #american history #history #archaeology
Clear Light of Day by Anita Desai: In this Booker Prizenominated novel, Desai captures the essence of postcolonial India through the lens of family and personal history Her exquisite prose brings to life the nuances of radicalism, gender issues, and the significance of the past. Desai’s ability to paint scenes with words makes this novel a mesmerizing read, steeped in literary beauty. In her world, silence roars like a looming dragon, the sun slashes at us with its flashing knives, and spiky bougaivilleas scrape the outer walls and even a fan creaks and complains for want of oiling. #HistoricalFiction #IndianLiterature #Literature
The Selfish Gene by Richard Dawkins: Dawkins's masterpiece remains a cornerstone of evolutionary biology, challenging readers to consider the gene's perspective on survival and behavior The book is dense with insight and may require a patient reader, but it's incredibly rewarding for those interested in the mechanics of life and evolution. How could altruism have evolved? How can predators and prey co-exist? Why does it pay to have so many, or so few, children? Does aggression always confer an advantage? These questions invite anyone curious to explore the pages of this important book. #evolution #science #biology

It's a fantastic primer on the technologies that could shape our future It's peppered with jokes and cartoons. It's science made fun, transforming what could be heavy-going into something you can't put down #technology #futurism #science
The Design of Everyday Things by Don Norman: Ever found yourself puzzled by a door unsure whether to push or pull? Or maybe you've struggled to match the right knob with the correct burner on a stove? If you've ever blamed yourself for these moments of confusion, think again. According to Don Norman, a champion of user-centered design, the fault lies not with you, but with the designers. In his eye-opening book, Norman flips the script on technological mishaps, arguing that poorly designed interfaces are to blame, not the users. It's a refreshing perspective that challenges us to rethink our interactions with everyday objects and demand better design for a smoother experience. #design #business #psychology #technology
Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things by William McDonough & Michael Braungart: Challenging the mantra of "reduce, reuse, recycle," McDonough and Braungart advocate for a radical rethink of manufacturing and environmental sustainability. Drawing on their experience in (re)designing everything from carpeting to corporate campuses, they propose a model inspired by nature's efficiency. This visionary book is a compelling read for anyone concerned with sustainable design and manufacturing practices. #sustainability #environment #design #science #business

It is not very uncommon for Toastmasters to be teeming with inspiring minds, for it is a crowd of the extraordinary, that seek to improve in something that our careers do not necessarily demand of us. Consequently, some great characters visit our club to share of their wonderful insights so others may absorb their wisdom.
And occasionally, our meetings are graced by extraordinary characters like Sivasuryan Senthil Raman He is a climate warrior who was in the middle of a 11,000 km ride all across India. He wanted to share his thoughts as he was passing through Coimbatore.
He embarked on this jou ey o 5t o January 2024, and made it to Coimbatore in the mid of March, having covered 6000km by then. The reason for his extraordinary deed was rather interesting It was not for personal glory he took this on, but for an entirely altruistic purpose.
Having researched deeply the causes of climate impact, he spent sleepless nights brooding over the precarious future of the earth He wanted to make the sleeping humanity aware of the obvious and blaring problem of climate change.
He believed mere preaching would do little to inspire committed action from people, so he embarked on a ride all across India on his bicycle. Infact, he still is ongoing in his journey, through his wife’s native of Thalassery this very moment as this article is being written
His journey is not just mere biking through the challenging terrains of the Indian subcontinent, notwithstanding the summer heat, but to visit as many schools, colleges, business meetings as possible He has set himself a target of reaching out to 1 crore students and educating them on the need for action
People have been moved to tears listening to his speech, not because of the climate predicament, but by hearing of his sacrifices for this cause Having given up so much at such a young age, his actions beckon at us, “What shall be our part in all this?”

How has your pursuits of hobbies enriched you apart from Toastmasters?
Public speaking is my passion. It’s my therapy. Understand the value of your time and spend it wisely, which stuff makes you better person in professionally and personally.
How has your confidence changed since joining Toastmasters? How has ToastMaster sessions helped you personally and in your career?
Toastmasters has taught me to be confident in ways I didn’t know possible, and it has taught me that people are slave to appearances. Yes, an outward aura of confidence naturally follows with positive consequences that benefit you.
What makes our Toastmasters club unique or special to you?
The cohort in CTC has more veteran Toastmasters who’ve been here longer durations than other clubs I’ve seen, where people flow in and out. This inspires newcomers to push themselves more to match their performance
What leadership roles have you taken on within the club, and what have you learned from those experiences?
I’ve taken the role of VPPR, and tried almost all the roles in meetings I’ve learnt that each role has a nuance that caters to different aspects of being human. For instance, a role of Ah counter is a meditation where you open your senses to every syllable uttered by each speaker. A TMOD role makes you research as much as one could about a topic.
